The investigation of triggers causing the onset and intensification of Northern Hemisphere Glaciation (NHG) during the late Pliocene is essential for understanding the global climate system, with important implications for projecting future climate changes. Despite their critical roles in the global climate system, influences of land-ocean interactions on high-latitude ice sheets remain largely unexplored. Here, we present a high-resolution Asian dust record from Ocean Drilling Program Site 1208 in the North Pacific, which lies along the main route of the westerlies. Our data indicate that atmosphere-land-ocean interactions affected aeolian dust emissions through modulating moisture and vegetation in dust source regions, highlighting a critical role of terrestrial systems in initiating the NHG as early as 3.6 Myr ago. Combined with additional multi-proxy and model results, we further show that westerly wind strength was enhanced, mainly at low-to-middle tropospheric levels, during major glacial events at about 3.3 and 2.7 Myr ago. We suggest that coupled responses of Earths surface dynamics and atmospheric circulation in the Plio-Pleistocene likely involved feedbacks related to changes in paleogeography, ocean circulation, and global climate.

Across the Miocene-Pliocene boundary (MPB; 5.3 million years ago, Ma), late Miocene cooling gave way to the early-to-middle Pliocene Warm Period. This transition, across which atmospheric CO2 concentrations increased to levels similar to present, holds potential for deciphering regional climate responses in Asia-currently home to more than half of the world's population- to global climate change. Here we find that CO2-induced MPB warming both increased summer monsoon moisture transport over East Asia, and enhanced aridification over large parts of Central Asia by increasing evaporation, based on integration of our ~1-2-thousand-year (kyr) resolution summer monsoon records from the Chinese Loess Plateau aeolian red clay with existing terrestrial records, land-sea correlations, and climate model simulations. Our results offer palaeoclimate-based support for 'wet-gets-wetter and dry-gets-drier' projections of future regional hydroclimate responses to sustained anthropogenic forcing. Moreover, our high-resolution monsoon records reveal a dynamic response to eccentricity modulation of solar insolation, with predominant 405-kyr and ~100-kyr periodicities between 8.1 and 3.4 Ma.

Polyethylene oxide (PEO) based electrolytes critically govern the security and energy density of solid-state batteries, but typically suffer from poor oxidation resistance at high voltages, which limits the energy density of batteries. Here, we report a Lewis-acid coordinated strategy to significantly improve the cyclic stability of 4.8 V-class PEO-based battery. The introduced Mg 2+ and Al 3+ with strong electron-withdrawing capability weaken the electron density of ether oxygen (EO) chains via chelation in the coordination structure, resulting in a locally limited interaction between the EO chains and the surface of cathodes at high state of charge. The batteries using Lewis-acid coordinated electrolytes and Ni-rich cathodes achieve high voltage stability of 4.8 V over 300 cycles. Further, the realization of industrial-scale electrolyte membranes, and Ah-level pouch cells over 586 Wh kg ‒1 with good cyclic stability, suggests the potential of our strategy in practical applications of all-solid-state batteries., (© 2024.
