Abstract

Secretion of leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) is required for the successful implantation of the blastocyst in the uterine wall in mice. The absence of LIF, a cytokine secreted by the uterine endometrial glands in the fourth day of pregnancy, prevented pregnancy by not allowing the blastocysts to implant themselves and develop as embryos. This newly discovered role of LIF in reproduction, if found to apply to mammalian pregnancy in general, may lead to new methods of contraception and of improving in vitro fertilization.
