Surrogate-based optimization, nature-inspired metaheuristics, and hybrid combinations have become state of the art in algorithm design for solving real-world optimization problems. Still, it is difficult for practitioners to get an overview that explains their advantages in comparison to a large number of available methods in the scope of optimization. Available taxonomies lack the embedding of current approaches in the larger context of this broad field. This article presents a taxonomy of the field, which explores and matches algorithm strategies by extracting similarities and differences in their search strategies. A particular focus lies on algorithms using surrogates, nature-inspired designs, and those created by automatic algorithm generation. The extracted features of algorithms, their main concepts, and search operators, allow us to create a set of classification indicators to distinguish between a small number of classes. The features allow a deeper understanding of components of the search strategies and further indicate the close connections between the different algorithm designs. We present intuitive analogies to explain the basic principles of the search algorithms, particularly useful for novices in this research field. The performance of the Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) depends on the gravitational constant G, which controls the balance of exploration and exploitation abilities. Improving the setting of this parameter has attracted many researchers. In this paper, we analyzed the GSA stability using the von Neumann stability criterion. First, we modeled the iterative process by a second-order differential equation and derived the first and second-order stability conditions. Then, based on these criteria, we suggested a new law to adjust the initial value of the parameter G, depending on the distance between objects and then on the search space. Some supporting simulations were carried out using different update laws of the gravitational constant (e.g., exponential, log-sigmoid, linear, and chaotic) on CEC 2017 benchmark functions in different search space dimensions. The achieved results show that the new setting leads to significantly better outcomes in high-dimensional search spaces (greater than 20). A comparison with other metaheuristics (Particle Swarm Optimization, Artificial Bee Colony, and Grey Wolf Optimizer) reveals that the new setting proffers GSA competitiveness. Tests on 23 real-world problems (CEC 2011 benchmark problems and the iron ores sintering problem) further proved all the merits of the proposed parameter setting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A major issue while conceiving or parameterizing an optimization heuristic is to ensure an appropriate balance between exploitation and exploration of the search. Evolution strategies and neighborhood-based metaheuristics constitute relevant high-level frameworks, which ease the problem solving but are often complex to configure. Moreover, their effective behavior, according to the particularities of the search landscapes, remains difficult to grasp. In this paper, we deeply investigate the sampled walk search algorithm, which is a local search equivalent of the (1 , λ) -evolution strategy, considering that the neighborhood relation describes mutation possibilities. We specifically designed experiments to better understand the behavior of such a strategy offering a fine way to deal with the exploration versus exploitation dilemma. The main contribution is the analysis of search trajectories by evaluating and visualizing both their width (exploration) and their height (exploitation). In complexity theory, there is a widely studied grouping of optimization problems that belongs to the non-deterministic polynomial-time hard set. One of them is the set covering problem, known as one of Karp's 21 NP -complete problems, and it consists of finding a subset of decision variables for satisfying a set of constraints at the minimum feasible cost. However, due to the nature of the problem, this cannot be solved using traditional complete algorithms for hard instances. In this work, we present an improved binary version of the monkey search algorithm for solving the set covering problem. Originally, this approximate method was naturally inspired by the cognitive behavior of monkeys for climbing mountains. We propose a new climbing process with a better exploratory capability and a new cooperation procedure to reduce the number of unfeasible solutions. For testing this approach, we present a detailed computational results section, where we illustrate how this variation of the monkey search algorithm is capable of reaching various global optimums for a well-known instance set from the Beasley's OR-Library and how it outperforms many other heuristics and meta-heuristics addressed in the literature. This paper proposes a semi-self-adaptive harmony search algorithm (SSaHS) with the self-adaptive adjustment of the bandwidth and the elitist learning strategy of particle swarm optimization. SSaHS employs a self-adaptive adjusting strategy for with the difference between the maximum and minimum components in the harmony memory as the bandwidth. It can dynamically adjust the bandwidth for the specific problem to strengthen local exploitation ability and improve the accuracy of optimization results. Comparison results show that the semi-self-adaptive harmony search algorithm can find better solutions when comparing with both basic harmony search algorithm and several enhanced harmony search algorithms, including an improved harmony search, a global-best harmony search and a novel global harmony search.
