Some disability insurance (DI) companies have shifted gears and are replacing unisex ratings of individual DI policies with sex-distinct ratings. DI companies began to phase-in unisex ratings after a 1984 Supreme Court decision ruled that pension plans had to provide equal benefits to women. The decision did not touch on insurance, but the DI companies implemented unisex rating as a defensive move. Unisex rates also were implemented to keep up with changing social mores so companies could remain competitive in a changing marketplace., Today, unisex rating for individual disability insurance policies no longer looks like the wave of the future.
