A big beneficiary of the American Federation of Labor & Congress of Industrial Organization's new leadership was the Clinton administration. The union gave the Democrats $1.1 million in direct contributions in 1996. Sweeney has fought against California's anti-preference Civil Rights Initiative and has filed a lawsuit to hinder efforts opposing same-sex marriage in Hawaii.
