Former U.S. president Dwight (Ike) Eisenhower was a cold-blooded realist whose foreign policy was to manage an adversary, rather than risk destabilization by trying to defeat it. His brand of calm, studied under-reaction combined with easy unsentimentality may be the right attitude needed by the next president of the United States to set right the nation's tarnished foreign policy.
