The history of ethnicity and ethnic self-consciousness in the U.S. has moved in waves. Since the end of European mass immigration to the U.S. forty years ago it has waited for the subsidence of ethnic self-consciousness, and often announced it, and it has returned again and again. But each time it has returned in so different a form that one could well argue it was not the same thing returning at all, that what people saw was not the breakthrough of the consciousness of common origin and community among the groups that made the U.S., but rather that ethnicity was being used as a cover for some other more significant force, which was borrowing another identity. During the early years of the depression, ethnicity withdrew as a theme in American life.

It analyses the relationship between those who control the material power of the society and those who control the psychological power of the people is another matter. O'Faolain asks a question in this book: why are the heroes of modern literature not on the side of society? This question is referring to a subject of social consciousness and ruling concepts of a society. O'Faolain shows concern towards analyzing the causes of the disappearance of the social Hero from fiction, as being a complicated matter.

This article presents information on the book "Three Novels: Uncle Moses, Chaim Lederer's Return, and Judge Not," by Sholem Asch and translated from the Yiddish by Elsa Krauch. The three short novels in this volume were written between 1916 and 1923. It shows some of the characteristics, such as, social awareness and colorful portraiture. According to the author of this article, this novel is typical of the rather stereotyped melting-pot novels that followed the great wave of Jewish immigration to New York. The Jews had been torn from the ancient static, but intense culture of the ghetto and thrown into a community in which their traditions were burdensome and obstructive.

"Singing for Power. The Song Magic of the Papago Indians of Southern Arizona," by Ruth Murry Underhill, gives in as accurate a free rendering as the structure of English permits, a group of songs which the Papago sing for power-to make themselves, so they think, better able to cope with the difficult environment in which they live.

This article focuses on Ben Shahn's paintings. Ben Shahn's Gift, though indisputable, is rarely effective beyond a surface felicity. What his retrospective show at the Museum of Modern Art makes all too clear is how lacking his art is in density and resonance. These pictures are mere stitching on the border of the cloth of painting, little flashes of talent that have to be shaded from the glare of high tradition lest they disappear from sight. On the whole Shahn's art seems to have improved with time. The later pictures become more sensitive and more painterly. According to the author, his social consciousness has at the same time become less prominent and does not play much of a role in later paintings.

With two important exceptions the stories in this volume represent a very definite retrogression on the part of an American writer from whose work one has become accustomed to receive an impression of constant growth and development. Neither the sentimental phallicism of "Perhaps Women" nor the timorous overtones of social consciousness of the more recent "Beyond Desire" are present in this book. The crystallization of one or the other of these attitudes that one had half expected does not take place.
