The article focuses on the book "I Am a Mathematician," by Norbert Wiener. A large portion of the book describes the author's travels, his family life, his friendships and quarrels, his emotional difficulties, his social, political and cultural opinions. Wiener has an easy, readable style whose pace is some times slowed by digressions and often enlivened by anecdotes. The author calls attention also to Weiner's views on the deadening effect on scientific creativeness of industrial research, too much money and the team approach to scientific problems.
