The news that automaker Studebaker Co. was closing forever its ear-building operations in South Bend, Indiana came as a shock for many people. That evening, as the 7,000 workers streamed out of the plant, they found television cameras at the gate, and airpressed their shock and numb disbelief for the national news wrap-ups. Studebaker was a symbol of South Bend for the world, and that for 7,200 active members and 2,175 retirees, it had been a world in itself. Even before the lay-off, last November 1963 of 1,700, a man needed fifteen years' seniority to hold down a job in the plant. Only workers with twenty or more years of seniority were working on December 10, 1963 and the average age of the employed workers was over fifty-four.

In the official version of foreign newspapers, the recent seizure of Italian factories by the workmen, resulting in a nation-wide compact for workers' supervision in industry, was made possible only by the "incredibly supine attitude of the Italian Government." This explanation of the Italian workers' success is sufficient to those who have forgotten that Europe has been shaken by a great war; that revolution is in reality, and not merely in headlines, stalking abroad; and that the Peace of Versailles has condemned everybody to grab what he can get. Premier Giolitti's official explanation of the Italian Government's attitude was that it is due to a social adjustment was taking place the world over.

Rogovin, now 84, was an optometrist until an appearance before the House Committee on Un-American Activities effectively shut down his practice. In order to demystify the process of oral history and to demonstrate the interviewer's subjective role, Frisch included his questions and comments. However, this book is not another analysis of deindustrialization. Rather its emphasis is on documentary portraiture of working men and women through photographs and oral history.
