Writer Loe Strachey's leading editorial in the "Spectator," was respectful enough to herald at least a second Milton. The title and promoters are a secret, but the journal Outlook publishes extracts from the advance notices, from which he, too, has made extracts. For diplomatists and statesmen of England, it has not been the inspiration among the inheritors of the liberal traditions of England. For them Zionism is right in itself. They see 2,000 years of persecution and ostracism, 2,000 years of intolerance. State and church, their enemies too, have united in the age-long persecution of a race. They see Zionism not only as a city of refuge for the oppressed, but one which they and England have taken a share in building. It is a credit to them. It is their amende, a gesture in the face of the liberal nations of continental Europe.

For those of us lucky enough not to be in central London when the bombs went off, the horror has taken a while to bloom. Rescue workers clambering over pieces of the dead in the tunnels under King's Cross; the tremulous present tense in the descriptions of the missing; our queasy fascination with eyewitness accounts filling the papers--these things uncover a darkness we are adept at denying. In the immediate aftermath of the bombings, life seemed to return to normal with defiant and comforting speed. Now, however, the question prompted by the revelation that the explosions were the work of British-born suicide bombers is: "Why them?" We knew something like this was going to happen, but most of us assumed that when it did the culprits--like the attackers in Manhattan and Madrid--would be foreigners. Like an aftershock, the news that the attackers were homegrown, cricket-loving Muslim lads from Leeds may yet do more damage than the initial attacks.

This article focuses on the international relations between various countries. The Axis-Japan pact has been called everything from a bluff to the blueprint of a new totalitarian world order. In fact it is a typical Nazi maneuver, and so it combines some elements of both. But Hitler has always used failure as a stepping-stone for new advances, and while it is legitimate to take satisfaction at the stubborn courage which has ended the hope of an autumn invasion of England, wise observers will not discount the importance of Hitler's grandiose substitute scheme. The pact with Japan has been treated, of course, as a resounding diplomatic triumph, and no doubt it will be accepted as such by the bemused masses of Germany and Italy.

Ten essays are published in the book and all of them are marked by vigorous thought and reasoning, although each one of them differs considerably in merit. The first three papers are disappointing, on account of the extraordinarily clumsy and obscure style. In the rest of the essays the author's style is better, which however, is never of the first order. The object of the book is "to define the place which economist Richard Cobden holds in the political and economical history of England.

If American travelers would occasionally do the favor to stay with everyone in England for a little longer on their way to the Continent, they would discover that amongst the various blessings of a constitutional monarchy not the least is a happy freedom from the extremes of weather as of politics.

A remarkable sign of the growth of pacifist sentiment in England appears from the great victory won by Wilfred Wellock in the Stourbridge division by-election. This Labor candidate won his seat by a majority of 3,099 over his Conservative opponent. Dictator Benito Mussolini continues to play the old diplomatic role with considerable skill. To solidify Italy's control of Southeastern Europe and checkmate the ambitions of Jugoslavia, he signed in December-with the apparent connivance of Great Britain-a treaty with Albania which guaranteed the "independence" of Albania and established in power his tool, Ahmed Zogu, under Italian protection. Since then Mussolini has won Rumanian support.

Zola was received with effusive enthusiasm in London, whither he went to read a paper on "Anonymity in the Press" before the Institute of Journalists. This was the more surprising inasmuch as, while she was embracing the writer, England was at the same time sending a publisher to jail for bringing out a translation of his works. Then came a meeting in London in support of a Serbian Jugoslav kingdom. The final maneuver was the decision, taken at a meeting that the Montenegrin dynasty should be extinguished in favor of that of Serbia.

Writer Henry de Quincey, writing to his brother Thomas in 1808, says, "I send this by Mr. Harden, and should have come myself if it had not rained so. I folded it well in paper, that he might not see the redness of the cover through it and thereby judge what it was." On this letter Thomas inscribes this grim "The book was 'The Simpliciad' by Mant, a poor Oxford Fool." The author thus emphatically condemned was Richard Mant, born in 1776, who matriculated at Oxford, England in 1703, became a fellow of Oriel in 1798, M.A in 1800 and D.D. in 1815. After holding several benefices he was appointed Bishop of Killaloe in 1820, Bishop of Down and Connor in 1823, of Dromore in 1842, and died on November 2, 1848.

Many accounts have been written of the significant events of 1914, the comings and goings of ambassadors, the grave speeches, the fateful telegrams flashing across Europe through the hot July nights, the mobilizations, and so on. But much less has been written of the trivia of that year. The London of 1914 is now an almost forgotten city, but to me, a young man newly arrived from what was then known as "the Colonies," it was a strange and exciting revelation. The reason for the strangeness, of course, was obvious, but the excitement, was felt by maturer and more sophisticated persons. Almost every day a new sensation seized the interest of the public, and it is curious and significant to recall how many of these sensations, or pseudo-sensations, were used by the press to arouse and flatter the patriotism of the British public.

The matter well deserves to be weighed; but those who on the other side suppose that any other single person, however influential, could bring about any change in the English arrangements, are mistaken, for those arrangements are deeply rooted in the customs of the country.

The following is a column by columnist, "The Drifter." Lord Alfred Northcliffe who was the first to introduce the 5-day week into London, England journalism, has now gone a step, or a day, further and established a 4-day week for the editorial workers of his Evening News. The increasing pressure under which men on evening newspapers work justifies, he thinks, this special dispensation in their behalf. While admitting the correctness of the premises, the Drifter is not sure that a shorter working week is as good an offset as would be a shorter working day.
