Chemically synthesized carbon dots (CDs) have attracted a lot of attention as an eco-friendly and cost-efficient light-emitting material, and functionalization of CD surfaces with additives of different natures is a useful way to control their properties. In this study, we show how a post-synthetic treatment of CDs with citric acid, benzoic acid, urea and o -phenylenediamine changes their chemical composition and optical properties. In particular, it results in the formation of carboxyl/imide/carbonyl groups at the CD surface, leading to the appearance of additional blue (or for CDs treated with phenylenediamine, blue and green) emissive optical centers on top of the remaining emission from the original CDs. Most importantly, the increased oxidation degree alongside a decreased relative amount of carbon and nitrogen in such treated CDs decreases their highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level by up to 0.9 eV (the maximal value was observed for CDs treated with o -phenylenediamine). Moreover, the Fermi energy level shifted above the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level for some of the treated CD samples. Thus, the energy structure of CDs can be tuned and optimized for further applications through the functionalization of their surface with organic additives.

Since chirality is one of the phenomena often occurring in nature, optically active chiral compounds are important for applications in the fields of biology, pharmacology, and medicine. With this in mind, chiral carbon dots (CDs), which are eco-friendly and easy-to-obtain light-emissive nanoparticles, offer great potential for sensing, bioimaging, enantioselective synthesis, and development of emitters of circularly polarized light. Herein, chiral CDs have been produced via two synthetic approaches using a chiral amino acid precursor l/d-cysteine: (i) surface modification treatment of achiral CDs at room temperature and (ii) one-pot carbonization in the presence of chiral precursor. The chiral signal in the absorption spectra of synthesized CDs originates not only from the chiral precursor but from the optical transitions attributed to the core and surface states of CDs. The use of chiral amino acid molecules in the CD synthesis through carbonization results in a substantial (up to 8 times) increase in their emission quantum yield. Moreover, the synthesized CDs show two-photon absorption which is an attractive feature for their potential bioimaging and sensing applications.

The optical properties of chemically synthesized carbon dots (CDs) can be widely tuned via doping and surface modification with heteroatoms such as nitrogen, which results in a range of potential applications. Herein, two most commonly used synthesis approaches, namely, solvothermal and microwave-assisted thermal treatments, have been used for the preparation of CDs from phloroglucinol using three different nitrogen containing solvents, namely, ethylenediamine, dimethylformamide, and formamide. Based on the analysis of the morphology and optical properties, we demonstrate the tenability of the CD appearance from amorphous or well-carbonized spherical particles to onion-like ones, which is controlled by solvent polarity, whereas the thermal treatment conditions mostly influence the degree of N-doping and the nature of emissive centers of CDs formed. The findings of this study expand the toolkit of the available CDs with variable morphology and energy structure.

Along the line of offering surface modification strategies to tune emission properties of carbon dots (CDs), a co-crystallization strategy with cyanuric acid (CA) was developed to modulate the bandgap emissions of CDs and produce highly emissive solid composite CD-based materials. The original blue emission of the CDs changed to a green emission of the CDs@CA crystals, which showed a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 62% and room temperature phosphorescence. The CA molecules firmly bonded to the surface of the CDs and cannot be disrupted by polar solvents or temperature stimuli under ambient conditions, which influenced electron transitions of CDs leading to improved luminescence with excellent thermal stability both in solution and solid states.

Carbon dots (CDs) are luminescent nanomaterials, with potential use in bioimaging and sensorics. Here, the influence of the surrounding solvent media on the optical properties of CDs synthesized from the most commonly employed precursors, namely citric acid and ethylenediamine, is investigated. The position of optical transitions of CDs can be tuned by the change of pH and solvent polarity. The most striking observation is related to the interaction of CDs with chlorine containing solvents, which results in resolving a set of narrow peaks within both the absorption and PL bands, similar to those observed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or organic dyes. We assume that the chlorine containing molecules penetrate the surface layers of CDs, which results in an increase of the distance between the luminescent centers; this correlates well with an enhanced D-band in their Raman spectra. A model of CDs composed of a matrix of hydrogenated amorphous carbon with the inclusions of sp2-domains formed by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives is suggested; the latter are stacked ensembles of the luminophores and are considered as the origin of the emission of CDs.

Phosphorescence processes in composite systems based on luminescent carbon dots (CDs) are of great fundamental and practical interest. Herein, the control of the phosphorescent signal in a CD/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite is realized. Enhanced green phosphorescence is obtained via thermal annealing of the composite under 200 °C, which can be quenched via water treatment, and then recovered again, via either repeated annealing or near-infrared laser irradiation. Water molecules infiltrating the CD/PVA composite lead to considerable vibrational motions of the CD surface groups through destruction of the rigid composite structure together with an increase in the possibility of the penetration of the phosphorescence quenchers, and thus a decrease in the phosphorescence intensity. After repeated annealing, the nonradiative transitions are restricted, and the phosphorescence signal is recovered again. Based on such on-off switching of the phosphorescence signal, a concept of multiple data encryption is realized by using the CD@PVA composite.

We suggest a novel class of active nanoantennas based on diamond nanoparticles with embedded nitrogen-vacancy centres coupled to Mie resonances of nanoparticles. We theoretically study the optical properties of such nanoantennas including the field enhancement and Purcell effect, and experimentally demonstrate the enhancement of the fluorescence rate of the emitters due to particle resonances, as compared to a nonresonant regime. Our results pave the way towards active dielectric nanophotonics for quantum light sources, bioimaging, and quantum information processing.

We report a new type of metamaterial comprising a highly ordered 3D network of 3-7 nm lead sulfide quantum dots self-assembled in an organic matrix formed by amphiphilic ligands (oleic acid molecules). The obtained 3D superstructures possess an orthorhombic lattice with the distance between the nanocrystals as large as 10-40 nm. Analysis of self-assembly and destruction of the superstructures in time performed by a SAXS technique shows that their morphology depends on the quantity of amphiphilic ligands and width of the quantum dot size and its distribution. Formation of the superstructures is discussed in terms of a model describing the lyotropic crystal formation by micelles from three-phase mixtures. The results show that the organic molecules possessing surfactant properties and capable of forming micelles with nanoparticles as a micelle core can be utilized as building blocks for the creation of novel metamaterials based on a highly ordered 3D network of semiconductors, metals or magnetic nanoparticles.
