The advancement of nanofabrication technologies has transformed the landscape of engineered nano-bio interfaces, especially with vertically aligned nanoneedles (NNs). This enables scientists to venture into new territories, widening NN applications into increasingly more complex cellular manipulation and interrogation. Specifically, for intracellular delivery application, NNs have been shown to mediate the delivery of various bioactive cargos into a wide range of cells-a physical method termed "nanoinjection". Silicon (Si) nanostructures demonstrated great potential in nanoinjection, whereas the use of polymeric NNs for nanoinjection has rarely been explored. Furthermore, the underlying mechanism of interaction at the cell-NN interface is subtle and multifaceted, and not fully understood-underpinned by the design versatility of the NN biointerface. Recent studies have suggested that actin dynamic plays a pivotal role influencing the delivery efficacy. In this study, we fabricated a new class of NNs-a programmable polymeric nanotubes (NTs)-from polystyrene (PS) cell cultureware, designed to facilitate mRNA delivery into mouse embryonic fibroblast GPE86 cells. The PSNT delivery platform was able to mediate mRNA delivery with high delivery efficiency (∼83%). We also investigated the role of actin cytoskeleton in PSNTs mediated intracellular delivery by introducing two actin inhibitors-cytochalasin D (Cyto D) and jasplakinolide (Jas)-to cause dysfunctional cytoskeleton, via inhibiting actin polymerization and depolymerization, respectively (before and after the establishment of cell-PSNT interface). By inhibiting actin dynamics 12 h before cell-PSNT interfacing (pre-interface treatment), the mRNA delivery efficiencies were significantly reduced to ∼3% for Cyto D-treated samples and ∼1% for Jas-treated sample, as compared to their post-interface (2 h after cell-PSNT interfacing) counterpart (∼46% and ∼68%, respectively). The added flexibility of PSNTs have shown to help withstand mechanical breakage stemming from cytoskeletal forces in contrast to the SiNTs. Such findings will step-change our capacity to use programmable polymeric NTs in fundamental cellular processes related to intracellular delivery.

Various non-stratified two-dimensional (2D) materials can be obtained from liquid metal surfaces that are not naturally accessible. Homogenous nucleation on atomically flat interfaces of liquid metals with air produces unprecedented high-quality oxide layers that can be transferred onto desired substrates. The atomically flat and large areas provide large surface-to-volume ratios ideal for sensing applications. Versatile crucial applications of the liquid metal-derived 2D oxides have been realized; however, their gas-sensing properties remain largely underexplored. The cubic In 2 O 3 structure, which is nonlayered, can be formed as an ultrathin layer on the surface of liquid indium during the self-limiting Cabrera-Mott oxidation process in the air. The morphology, crystal structure, and band structure of the harvested 2D In 2 O 3 nanosheets from liquid indium are characterized. Sensing capability toward several gases, both inorganic and organic, entailing NO 2 , O 2 , NH 3 , H 2 , H 2 S, CO, and Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) are explored. A high ohmic resistance change of 1974% at 10 ppm, fast response, and recovery times are observed for NO 2 at an optimum temperature of 200 °C. The sensing fundamentals are investigated for NO 2 , and its performances and cross-selectivity to different gases are analyzed. The NO 2 sensing response from room temperature to 300 °C has been measured and discussed, and stability after 24 hours of continuous operation is presented. The results demonstrate liquid metal-derived 2D oxides as promising materials for gas sensing applications.

Atomically thin hexagonal boron nitride (BN) is a promising dielectric substrate for graphene and other two-dimensional (2D) materials for performance enhancement and heat dissipation. However, the interfacial heat conductance between atomically thin BN and graphene has not been experimentally studied yet. Here, we report that the interfacial thermal conductance between high-quality graphene and trilayer BN is 9.64 ± 2.12 MW m -2 K -1 in the temperature range of 293-393 K, indicating that the interfacial thermal conductance is depressed when the heterostructure thickness is smaller than the wavelength of the low-frequency phonons, e.g. ZA in BN.

Two-dimensional (2D) integrated circuits based on graphene (Gr) heterostructures have emerged as next-generation electronic devices. However, it is still challenging to produce high-quality and large-area Gr/hexagonal boron nitride ( h -BN) vertical heterostructures with clear interfaces and precise layer control. In this work, a two-step metallic alloy-assisted epitaxial growth approach has been demonstrated for producing wafer-scale vertical hexagonal boron nitride/graphene ( h -BN/Gr) heterostructures with clear interfaces. The heterostructures maintain high uniformity while scaling up and thickening. The layer number of both h -BN and graphene can be independently controlled by tuning the growth process. Furthermore, conductance measurements confirm that electrical hysteresis disappears on h -BN/Gr field-effect transistors, which is attributed to the h -BN dielectric surface. Our work blazes a trail toward next-generation graphene-based analog devices.

Biosensors are essential components for effective healthcare management. Since biological processes occur on molecular scales, nanomaterials and nanosensors intrinsically provide the most appropriate landscapes for developing biosensors. Low-dimensional materials have the advantage of offering high surface areas, increased reactivity and unique physicochemical properties for efficient and selective biosensing. So far, nanomaterials and nanodevices have offered significant prospects for glucose sensing. Targeted glucose biosensing using such low-dimensional materials enables much more effective monitoring of blood glucose levels, thus providing significantly better predictive diabetes diagnostics and management. In this review, recent advances in using low dimensional materials for sensing glucose are summarized. Sensing fundamentals are discussed, as well as invasive, minimally-invasive and non-invasive sensing methods. The effects of morphological characteristics and size-dependent properties of low dimensional materials are explored for glucose sensing, and the key performance parameters such as selectivity, stability and sensitivity are also discussed. Finally, the challenges and future opportunities that low dimensional materials can offer for glucose sensing are outlined.

Highly flexible and stable plasmonic nanopaper comprised of silver nanocubes and cellulose nanofibres was fabricated through a self-assembly-assisted vacuum filtration method. It shows significant enhancement of the fluorescence emission with an enhancement factor of 3.6 and Raman scattering with an enhancement factor of ∼104, excellent mechanical properties with tensile strength of 62.9 MPa and Young's modulus of 690.9 ± 40 MPa, and a random distribution of Raman intensity across the whole nanopaper. The plasmonic nanopapers were encoded with multiplexed optical signals including surface plasmon resonance, fluorescence and SERS for anti-counterfeiting applications, thus increasing security levels. The surface plasmon resonance and fluorescence information is used as the first layer of security and can be easily verified by the naked eye, while the unclonable SERS mapping is used as the second layer of security and can be readily authenticated by Raman spectroscopy using a computer vision technique.

Recently, thermally regulating textiles have attracted wide interest owing to their ability to realize personal cooling and provide thermal comfort. However, most of the thermally conductive textiles cannot afford higher temperatures (>200 °C), which restricts their further applications in aviation, fire extinguishing or military requiring high temperature heat spreaders. Here, we report a high temperature thermally conductive nanocomposite textile consisting of amino functional boron nitride (FBN) nanosheets and polyimide (PI) nanofibers. Notably, the textile is "green" electrospun from aqueous solution without any toxic organic solvents, which is facile, economical and environmently friendly. Moreover, both FBN and the precursor of PI are modified to be water soluble and exhibit good compatibility in the spinning solution even under high concentrations. The "green" method obtained FBN-PI textile shows high thermal conductivity (13.1 W m-1 K-1) at a high temperature (300 °C), filling in the gap of thermally conductive polymer nanocomposite fibers for high temperature thermal regulation. Furthermore, it also provides efficient cooling capability as a thermal spreader. The good performance is ascribed to the weaving of the aligned FBN filament in a thermally stable PI fiber, which constructs an effective thermally conductive network. In addition, the nanocomposite textile is light weight, soft and hydrophobic, which is promising for electronic packaging or space suits for special high temperature thermal management.

The hybridisation of Co 3 O 4 and Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles dispersed in a super P carbon matrix is proposed as a favourable approach to improve the electrochemical performance (reversible capacity, cycling stability and rate capability) of the metal oxide electrodes in metal-ion batteries. Hybrid Co 3 O 4 -Fe 2 O 3 /C is prepared by a simple, cheap and easily scalable molten salt method combined with ball-milling and used in sodium-ion and potassium-ion batteries for the first time. The electrode exhibits excellent cycling stability and superior rate capability in sodium-ion cells with a capacity recovery of 440 mA h g -1 (93% retention) after 180 long-term cycles at 50-1000 mA g -1 and back to 50 mA g -1 . In contrast, Co 3 O 4 -Fe 2 O 3 , Co 3 O 4 and Fe 2 O 3 electrodes display unsatisfactory electrochemical performance. The hybrid Co 3 O 4 -Fe 2 O 3 /C is also reactive with potassium and capable of delivering a reversible capacity of 220 mA h g -1 at 50 mA g -1 which is comparable with the most reported anode materials for potassium-ion batteries. The obtained results broaden the range of transition metal oxide-based hybrids as potential anodes for K-ion and Na-ion batteries, and suggest that further studies of these materials with potassium and sodium are worthwhile.

Acquired drug resistance (ADR) can be developed in colorectal cancer cells after 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) treatment and diminish the effectiveness of chemotherapy. In this work, acquired 5-FU resistance in the colorectal cancer cell line SW480 was obtained with the up-regulation of dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPYD) gene expression which can convert 5-FU to its inactive metabolite. To overcome ADR in colorectal cancer, hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSNs) grafted with epidermal growth factor (EGF) were used as nanocarriers to deliver 5-FU to colorectal cancer cells with acquired drug resistance. The effect and mechanism of 5-FU loaded EGF grafted HMSNs (EGF-HMSNs-5-FU) in overcoming acquired drug resistance in SW480/ADR cells were studied. The EGF-HMSNs were demonstrated to be specifically internalized in EGFR overexpressed SW480/ADR cells via a receptor-mediated endocytosis and can escape from endo-lysosomes. The EGF-HMSNs-5-FU exhibited much higher cytotoxicity on SW480/ADR cells than HMSNs-5-FU and free 5-FU while the plain HMSNs did not show significant cytotoxicity. The mechanism of EGF-HMSNs-5-FU in overcoming drug resistance in SW480/ADR cells could be attributed to the specific internalization of EGF-HMSNs-5-FU in EGFR overexpressed cells which can lead to high intracellular drug accumulation and cause cell death through S phase arrest.

Liquid plasma, produced by nanosecond pulses, provides an efficient and simple way to fabricate a nanocomposite architecture of Co3O4/CNTs from carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and clusters of Co3O4 nanoparticles in deionized water. The crucial feature of the composite's structure is that Co3O4 nanoparticle clusters are uniformly dispersed and anchored to CNT networks in which Co3O4 guarantees high electrochemical reactivity towards sodium, and CNTs provide conductivity and stabilize the anode structure. We demonstrated that the Co3O4/CNT nanocomposite is capable of delivering a stable and high capacity of 403 mA h g(-1) at 50 mA g(-1) after 100 cycles where the sodium uptake/extract is confirmed in the way of reversible conversion reaction by adopting ex situ techniques. The rate capability of the composite is significantly improved and its reversible capacity is measured to be 212 mA h g(-1) at 1.6 A g(-1) and 190 mA h g(-1) at 3.2 A g(-1), respectively. Due to the simple synthesis technique with high electrochemical performance, Co3O4/CNT nanocomposites have great potential as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Technological and scientific challenges coupled with environmental considerations have attracted a search for robust, green and energy-efficient synthesis and processing routes for advanced functional nanomaterials. In this article, we demonstrate a high-energy ball milling technique for large-scale synthesis of nitrogen doped carbon nanoparticles, which can be used as an electro-catalyst for oxygen reduction reactions after a structural refinement with controlled thermal annealing. The resulting carbon nanoparticles exhibited competitive catalytic activity (5.2 mA cm(-2) kinetic-limiting current density compared with 7.6 mA cm(-2) on Pt/C reference) and excellent methanol tolerance compared to a commercial Pt/C catalyst. The proposed synthesis route by ball milling and annealing is an effective process for carbon nanoparticle production and efficient nitrogen doping, providing a large-scale production method for the development of highly efficient and practical electrocatalysts.

The detection and control of the temperature variation at the nano-scale level of thermo-mechanical materials during a compression process have been challenging issues. In this paper, an empirical method is proposed to predict the temperature at the nano-scale level during the solid-state phase transition phenomenon in NiTi shape memory alloys. Isothermal data was used as a reference to determine the temperature change at different loading rates. The temperature of the phase transformed zone underneath the tip increased by ∼3 to 40 °C as the loading rate increased. The temperature approached a constant with further increase in indentation depth. A few layers of graphene were used to enhance the cooling process at different loading rates. Due to the presence of graphene layers the temperature beneath the tip decreased by a further ∼3 to 10 °C depending on the loading rate. Compared with highly polished NiTi, deeper indentation depths were also observed during the solid-state phase transition, especially at the rate dependent zones. Larger superelastic deformations confirmed that the latent heat transfer through the deposited graphene layers allowed a larger phase transition volume and, therefore, more stress relaxation and penetration depth.

A novel nanocomposite architecture of a Fe2O3-SnO2-C anode, based on clusters of Fe2O3 and SnO2 nanoparticles dispersed along the conductive chains of Super P Li™ carbon black (Timcal Ltd.), is presented as a breathable structure in this paper for lithium-ion batteries. The synthesis of the nanocomposite is achieved by combining a molten salt precipitation process and a ball milling method for the first time. The crystalline structure, morphology, and electrochemical characterization of the synthesised product are investigated systematically. Electrochemical results demonstrate that the reversible capacity of the composite anode is 1110 mA h g(-1) at a current rate of 158 mA g(-1) with only 31% of initial irreversible capacity in the first cycle. A high reversible capacity of 502 mA h g(-1) (higher than the theoretical capacity of graphite, ~372 mA h g(-1)) can be obtained at a high current rate of 3950 mA g(-1). The electrochemical performance is compared favourably with those of Fe2O3-SnO2 and Fe2O3-SnO2-C composite anodes for lithium-ion batteries reported in the literature. This work reports a promising method for the design and preparation of nanocomposite electrodes for lithium-ion batteries.
