Luminescent semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have recently been suggested as novel probes for imaging and sensing cell membrane voltages. However, a key bottleneck for their development is a lack of techniques to assess QD responses to voltages generated in the aqueous electrolytic environments typical of biological systems. Even more generally, there have been relatively few efforts to assess the response of QDs to voltage changes in live cells. Here, we develop a platform for monitoring the photoluminescence (PL) response of QDs under AC and DC voltage changes within aqueous ionic environments. We evaluate both traditional CdSe/CdS and more biologically compatible InP/ZnS QDs at a range of ion concentrations to establish their PL/voltage characteristics on chip. Wide-field, few-particle PL measurements with neuronal cells show the QDs can be used to track local voltage changes with greater sensitivity (ΔPL up to twice as large) than state-of-the-art calcium imaging dyes, making them particularly appealing for tracking subthreshold events. Additional physiological observation studies showed that while CdSe/CdS dots have greater PL responses on membrane depolarization, their lower cytotoxicity makes InP/ZnS far more suitable for voltage sensing in living systems. Our results provide a methodology for the rational development of QD voltage sensors and highlight their potential for imaging changes in cell membrane voltage.

Multiple exciton generation (MEG) in semiconducting quantum dots is a process that produces multiple charge-carrier pairs from a single excitation. MEG is a possible route to bypass the Shockley-Queisser limit in single-junction solar cells but it remains challenging to harvest charge-carrier pairs generated by MEG in working photovoltaic devices. Initial yields of additional carrier pairs may be reduced due to ultrafast intraband relaxation processes that compete with MEG at early times. Quantum dots of materials that display reduced carrier cooling rates (e.g., PbTe) are therefore promising candidates to increase the impact of MEG in photovoltaic devices. Here we demonstrate PbTe quantum dot-based solar cells, which produce extractable charge carrier pairs with an external quantum efficiency above 120%, and we estimate an internal quantum efficiency exceeding 150%. Resolving the charge carrier kinetics on the ultrafast time scale with pump-probe transient absorption and pump-push-photocurrent measurements, we identify a delayed cooling effect above the threshold energy for MEG.

Understanding and controlling nanoscale morphology is crucial to the performance of polymer bulk heterojunction solar cells, as well as other optoelectronic devices such as polymer light-emitting diodes, field-effect transistors, and sensors. In photovoltaic devices, optimum blend morphologies must be commensurate with the nanometer length scales of exciton diffusion and charge separation. We report on a generally applicable method of optimizing the phase segregation in polymer-polymer bulk heterojunctions based on tuning mixtures of low and high boiling point solvents. We have characterized the resulting blend morphologies with nanometer resolution using a transient absorption technique that probes the distribution of paths traveled by the excitons themselves prior to generating charges at an interface. Photovoltaic efficiencies are accounted for in terms of exciton diffusion, geminate pair separation, and polymer ordering, all of which are sensitive to the nanoscale morphology determined by the composition of the solvent mixture.

A "visible-blind" solution-processed UV photodetector is realized on the basis of colloidal ZnO nanoparticles. The devices exhibit low dark currents with a resistance1 TOmega and high UV photocurrent efficiencies with a responsivity of 61 A/W at an average intensity of 1.06 mW/cm(2) illumination at 370 nm. The characteristic times for the rise and fall of the photocurrent are0.1 s and about 1 s, respectively. The photocurrent of the device is associated with a light-induced desorption of oxygen from the nanoparticle surfaces, thus removing electron traps and increasing the free carrier density which in turn reduces the Schottky barrier between contacts and ZnO nanoparticles for electron injection. The devices are promising for use in large-area UV photodetector applications.

Utilizing scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM), we present a quantitative chemical analysis of the bulk composition of spin-coated blends of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-co-N-(4-butylphenyl)diphenylamine) (TFB) and poly(9,9'-dioctylfluorene-co-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) used in efficient polymer light emitting diodes. With a lateral resolution of 50 nm, we reveal nanoscale subsurface chemical structure and show that in particular while blend composition remains constant within the TFB-rich domain, in the F8BT-rich phase there is an enrichment of F8BT at the domain interface.

We present a new approach to achieving order in molecular semiconductors via alignment of polymer chains using surface-initiated polymerization. Polyacrylate brushes grown from transparent conducting electrodes, with triarylamine side groups as hole-transporting components, show characteristics of high mobilities for hole transport. Solution processing a second component with favorable enthalpic interactions can form a composite with mesoscale order and be exploited for heterojunction diodes. We find substantial uptake of CdSe nanocrystals (with diameter in the range 2.5-2.8 nm), and such composites show photovoltaic quantum efficiencies of up to 50%.

We present a novel experimental approach which allows extraction of both spatial and temporal information on charge dynamics in organic solar cells. Using the wavelength dependence of the photonic structure in these devices, we monitor the change in spatial overlap between the photogenerated hole distribution and the optical probe profile as a function of time. In a model system we find evidence for a buildup of the photogenerated hole population close to the hole-extracting electrode on a nanosecond time scale and show that this can limit charge transport through space-charge effects under operating conditions.

This letter reports the self-assembly and analysis of CdSe nanocrystal monolayers on both p- and n-doped GaAs substrates. The self-assembly was performed using a 1,6-hexanedithiol self-assembled monolayer (SAM) to link CdSe nanocrystals to GaAs substrates. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), optical ellipsometry, photoluminescence (PL), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements were used to confirm stable, disordered, densely packed CdSe nanocrystal monolayers separated from the substrate by a SAM of 1,6-hexanedithiol.

We demonstrate an organic/inorganic hybrid photovoltaic device architecture that uses singlet exciton fission to permit the collection of two electrons per absorbed high-energy photon while simultaneously harvesting low-energy photons. In this solar cell, infrared photons are absorbed using lead sulfide (PbS) nanocrystals. Visible photons are absorbed in pentacene to create singlet excitons, which undergo rapid exciton fission to produce pairs of triplets. Crucially, we identify that these triplet excitons can be ionized at an organic/inorganic heterointerface. We report internal quantum efficiencies exceeding 50% and power conversion efficiencies approaching 1%. These findings suggest an alternative route to circumvent the Shockley-Queisser limit on the power conversion efficiency of single-junction solar cells.

We present a new fully conjugated diblock copolymer, P3HT-b-PFTBTT, containing donor and acceptor blocks with suitably positioned energy levels for use in a solar cell. This is the first block copolymer to be based on an existing high-performance polymer:polymer blend. We observe phase separation of the blocks and self-assembly behavior. In ternary blends with the respective homopolymers the diblock copolymer introduces lateral nanostructure without restricting P3HT crystallization in the charge transport direction, resulting in standing lamellae. By adding the diblock to the homopolymer blend as a compatibilizer, we prevent phase separation at elevated temperatures and benefit from a dramatic increase in P3HT ordering, allowing us to demonstrate polymer blend photovoltaics where the nanostructure is thermodynamically, rather than kinetically, controlled.

In this letter, we examine the effect of charge trapping on geminate recombination and organic photovoltaic performance using a Monte Carlo model. We alter the degree of charge trapping by considering energetic disorder to be spatially uncorrelated or correlated. On correlating energetic disorder, and so reducing the degree of trapping, it is found that power conversion efficiency of blend and bilayer devices improves by factors of 3.1 and 2.6, respectively. These results are related to the experimental data and quantum chemical calculations for poly[9,9-dioctylfluorene-co-bis-N,N'-(4-butylphenyl)-bis-N,N'-phenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine] (PFB)/poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-co-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) as well as poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT)/(6,6)-phenyl-C(61)-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) solar cell systems. The minimization of traps at the heterojunction between electron- and hole-accepting materials, perhaps by molecular design, appears to be a promising strategy to achieve large gains in PV performance. It is also shown that macroscopically measurable quantities such as mobility and energetic disorder are not necessarily good predictors of nanoscale geminate recombination process.
