Abstract

We report the detection of fullyconfined excited states and thezero-absorption region of individual site-controlled GaN/AlGaN nanowirequantum dots using photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy, whichprovides evidence of the true zero-dimensional discrete density ofstates of such quantum dots. Because of the strong quantum confinementin these dots, the p-shell, d-shell, and even higher energy (includingsome f-shell) states of a single quantum dot are observed, which providesunprecedented insight into the electronic structure. Several emittersare measured and used to build up an average picture of the electronicstructure of a single quantum dot via comparison to theoretical simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
