Tinea nigra is a superficial mycotic infection produced by Hortaea werneckii, formerly known as Phaeoannelomyces werneckii, formerly known as Exophiala werneckii, and Stenella araguata, the latter autochthonous in Venezuela, it was first described and named as Cladosporium castellanii in 1973. The present report describes 12 cases in the period of 1972-2002, diagnosed at the Medical Mycology Section at the Tropical Institute of the Universidad Central de Venezuela, in Caracas. This mycosis is more prevalent among young people, with fair skin, from 3 to 28 years of age, who visited beaches and in whom the lesions are more evident. Out of these 12 patients, 8 (66.66%) had Phaeoannelomyces werneckii as the causal agent and 2 (16.67%) Stenella araguata was isolated. Two patients had more than one macule, and curiously in these cases, each lesion was caused by a different species of the aforementioned fungus.

The taxonomic position of the causal agent of fruit rot of olives was determined from fresh collections of the fungus from central Greece. In culture it formed two types of conidia, namely fusiform, hyaline, aseptate conidia typical of the genus Fusicoccum, and dark-walled, ovoid, ellipsoid or fusiform, 1-2 septate conidia that are not typically observed in Fusicoccum. A phylogenetic analysis based on ITS and EF1-alpha sequences placed the fungus within the same clade as Fusicoccum aesculi, which is the anamorph of Botryosphaeria dothidea, and the type of the genus Fusicoccum.

Three species of Rhytisma are described based on recently collected specimens from the Anhui province, China. Rhytisma anhuiense is a new species causing a serious tar spot disease on Rhododendron simsii. Rhytisma yuexiense is a new species, which develops its stromata only on fallen leaves of Rhododendron ovatum. Rhytisma himalense on Ilex fargesii is a known species and probably widely distributed in China. Including the two new species, 11 species of Rhytisma are known from China which are presented in a key.

Fusarium Head Blight of small grain cereal is a disease of growing concern in Europe. Along with Microdochium nivale, several species of Fusarium may be associated with the disease, including species that are potentially toxigenic. This paper describes the results of a large scale survey of the variety and frequency of different Fusarium species and M. nivale in France. A total of 749 soft wheat, durum wheat and barley samples were collected and analyzed from 2000 to 2002. The most frequent species isolated were F.graminearum, F. avenaceum and F. poae. The frequency of F. poae seems to have increased while M.nivale and F. culmorum appear less frequent than previously described in France. Other Fusarium species detected in decreasing prevalence were F. tricinctum, F. equiseti, F. acuminatum, F. sambucinum, F.sporotrichioides, F. moniliforme, F. heterosporum, F. subglutinans and F. oxysporum. All the most frequent pathogenic species and also the less pathogenic ones were frequently associated with individual fields. The implications of these associations for the protection of cereals crops and for contamination by mycotoxins are discussed.

Coniothyrium canker caused by Coniothyrium zuluense, is a serious stem canker disease of Eucalyptus species in sub-tropical regions of South Africa. This disease is typified by necrotic bark lesions that coalesce to form large kino-impregnated cankers along the stems of trees. The strategy currently used to manage Coniothyrium canker in plantations is to deploy Eucalyptus species or clones that are resistant to the disease. Considerable success has already been achieved in this regard, but the long-term durability of resistance is of concern. Thus, forest managers are interested in the genetic diversity of the pathogen and its potential to overcome disease resistance in planting stock. In this study, 344 isolates of C. zuluense from different plantation regions in South Africa were compared on the basis of colony colour, conidial morphology, growth characteristics on agar and pathogenicity to a susceptible E. grandis clone. Conidia of all C. zuluense isolates measured were similar in size and shape. The fungus is slow growing in culture, which is indicative of its apparent biotrophic habit, with optimum growth observed at 30 degrees C. Isolates of C. zuluense displayed considerable variation in colony colour and pathogenicity in inoculation trials. Variation in morphology and pathogenicity amongst isolates suggests that C. zuluense has been present in South Africa for an extended period of time, or that it is changing rapidly due to strong directional selection pressures.

Protomycopsis phaseoli (Ramak and Subram) is the causal agent of the cowpea leaf smut disease in Nigeria and not Entyloma vignae as claimed by some authors. This pathogen formed dark ash-grey to sooty-black lesions of 3-10 mm in diameter, while young lesions had yellow haloes. P. phaseoli produced dark reddish-brown chlamydospores that are globose to oval measured 23.8 microm, thick-walled and rugose. The chlamydospores germinated and produced globose vesicles. The pathogen grew on potato dextrose agar only when the leaf tissue was dipped in acidified water (1% H2SO4). The organism was slowly growing at 24-28 degrees C with snow white colour. Chlamydospores of P. phaseoli in infected cowpea leaves survived longer when buried in the soil for five months than when they were left on the soil surface for the same period at temperatures (26-27 degrees C) and humidity (70-82%) prevailing in Ibadan. Destruction of leaf debris before crop emergence, long period of rotation and no tillage cropping are suggested to prevent the onset and spread of leaf smut disease of cowpea.

The common use of the name Capnodium citri to represent several species of sooty mold fungi is reviewed. Analysis of sooty mold specimens from Citrus in Florida found the species Antennariella californica and Chaetobolisia falcata with spherical fruitbodies and Caldariomyces fumago and Polychaeton citri with elongate fruitbodies. It is recommended that use of the name Capnodium citri for sooty mold on Citrus and ornamental plants is to be avoided because of its use for a number of species and on nomenclatural grounds.

Auxarthron californiense, Mixotrichum aeruginosum, Oncocladium flavum and Chaetomium elatum were recognized on the basis of ascomatal structures on the remains of a Longobard abbess who died in the IX century A.D. These fungi, which had remained isolated in a crypt of the S. Felice Monastery of Pavia for almost 1000 years, are phenotypically identical to the type specimens. The occurrence of these fungi and their ecological role are discussed.

Thirty-eight strains of 12 Microsporum and 10 Arthroderma (Nannizzia) species were investigated by analysis of mitochondrial DNA with 6 restriction enzymes, and classified into 13 genetic groups. The phylogenetic tree of the 13 groups thus established was constructed. On the tree, M. audouinii, M. langeronii, M. rivalieri, M. distortum, M. equinum, M. ferrugineum and A. otae comprise one genetic group and are suggested to be the same species. A. gypseum, A. fulvum, M. duboisii, M. ripariae, A. incurvatum, A. persicolor and A. obtusum are clustered on one of five boughs of the tree indicating their close relation. A. racemosum and A. cajetani are also closely related.

The phylogenetic relationship of the genera Arthroderma and Nannizzia, was investigated by mitochondrial DNA analysis based on the restriction-fragment-length polymorphisms. Phylogenetic trees made on ten species. A. benhamiae, A. insingulare, A. quadrifidum, A. simii, A. vanbreuseghemii, N. fulva, N. grubyia, N. gypsea, N. incurvata and N. otae showed no definite distinctions between the genera Arthroderma and Nannizzia. These results support the conclusion of Weitzman et al. that the genera Arthroderma and Nannizzia are congeneric.

Ubiquinone systems of the genus Histoplasma and Blastomyces dermatitidis were examined and the relationship between the two genera, Emmonsiella and Ajellomyces, was discussed. Ubiquinone systems have been adopted as a useful taxonomic criteria at the generic level for fungi. We investigated ubiquinone systems of sexual and asexual strains of Histoplasma species and Blastomyces dermatitidis. All the strains of the former group had dihydrogenated ubiquinone-10(Q-10(H2] as the major isoprenologue, while the latter had ubiquinone-10(Q-10). From the result, it was concluded that the teleomorph of Histoplasma species should be brought back to Emmonsiella.

Two hundred and thirty soil samples from different localities were examined for the presence of geophilic keratinophilic fungi. Six species namely Microsporum gypseum--34 isolates, Chrysosporium keratinophilum--29, C. tropicum--20, Keratinophyton terreum--4, Trichophyton terrestre--8 and Chrysosporium species--3--were isolated. Most of these fungi were recovered from garden, field and river bank soil. The importance of these findings is briefly discussed.

In 1969, specialists at the Kananaskis hyphomycete workshop coined the terms 'blastic' and 'thallic' to describe two distinct modes of conidiogenesis. Since then, the original concepts have been slightly modified and redefined, and the terms have been widely adopted in taxonomic descriptions of conidial fungi. Problems arise in the application of these terms to conidial development in fungi which demonstrate morphological plasticity ranging from fragmentation of a hypha to extrusion of a portion of a hypha or cell. A number of fungi, such as anamorphs of Onygenales which includes many of the fungi pathogenic to man, demonstrate intergradations between blastic and thallic development. Because development in this group of fungi is difficult to categorize, it has led to an inconsistent treatment of taxa which share many other developmental features in common. In using these terms, it should be remembered that they represent extremes in a developmental spectrum.

Exoantigen tests for the immunoidentification of fungal pathogens are playing a new and significant role in the diagnostic laboratory. Properly performed and controlled exoantigen tests lead to rapid, accurate identification of cultures of many fungal pathogens. The tests are particularly valuable in identifying dimorphic pathogens that are difficult to convert or with atypical cultures. We review the value of exoantigen tests for identifying mycelial form fungi: Aspergillus spp. Blastomyces dermatitidis, Coccidioides immitis, Exophiala jeanselmei, Histoplasma spp., Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, Penicillium marneffei, Pseudallescheria boydii, Sporothrix schenckii, Wangiella dermatitidis and certain dermatophytes. We discuss procedures for performing the tests and sources of error.

Replicates of whole colonies of four species of closely related dermatophytes were analyzed by pyrolysis gas-liquid chromatography (PGLC). The four species included fifteen strains of Arthroderma tuberculatum, and two strains each of A. benhamiae, Nannizzia gypsea and N. incurvata. Individual peaks on different pyrograms were identified as homologous with the aid of internal markers by the superimposition of pyrograms. The peak height data extracted from the pyrograms of the fungal samples were analyzed to compute average similarities between pairs of pyograms. The average was calculated with each peak weighted equally, and log weighted for its information content. The results of the cluster analyses of proximities were generally similar. Most, but not all, replicates of each strain were similar enough to be clustered together. Some strains belonging to the same species were also similar enough to be grouped in one cluster. Other strains of a single species varied sufficiently to be put in separate clusters. The nearest neighbour to each OTU (pyrogram) was always a replicate of the same strain.

A species of Monosporascus isolated from darkened stem bases of Triticum in Libya is compared with the two known species of the genus: M. cannonballus and M. eutypoides. The isolate resembles M. cannonballus in the type of ostiole developed but M. eutypoides in having mainly two-spored asci. It differs from M. eutypoides in having a reduced ostiole but this may be a response to growth in culture as this species has only previously been reported from infected tissues. In addition to having mainly two-spored and not one-spored asci, the isolate differs from M. cannonballus in that the spores pass through a stage in which a reticulum is visible when viewed by SEM. SEM photographs of the spores of both M. cannonballus and M. eutypoides, to which species this fungus is tentatively referred, are included. On germination the ascospores of the Triticum isolate produce 5--10 germ tubes. A growth curve for cultures is provided showing that the optimum temperature for growth is in the range 25--35 degrees C. Subcultures held at 48 degrees and 55 degrees C for five days failed to grow when transferred to 30 degrees C but ones held at 45 degrees for the same period grew normally when the temperature was reduced to 30 degrees C. The appearance of the colonies at different temperatures is also described.

Restriction profiles by HaeIII of mitochondrial DNA were studied for classification and distinction of Sporothrix schenckii (100 strains), S. schenckii var. luriei (1), S. curviconia (1), S. inflata (7), Ceratocystis stenoceras (17) and C. minor (7). These 6 species showed unique restriction profiles which could be discriminated from each other S. schenckii was further separable into 11 types, S. inflata into 4 types, C. stenoceras into 4 types and C. minor into 7 types based on restriction profile heterogeneity.

Aspergillus penicilloides Speg., Eurotium halophilicum Christensen et al. and other xerophilic fungi were isolated from house dust. The isolates of E. halophilicum are described and compared with the type strain of this species. A. penicilloides appeared to be rather common. The species concept of this species is broadened to accomodate some variable forms with different colony characters and conidophore structures. The role of both species is discussed in connection with house-dust mites, house-dust allergy and skin diseases.
