This article examines the NAfME Position Statement on Sacred Music in Schools, which has not been significantly updated since it was first published in 1984. Using genealogical inquiry, the author examines the conditions surrounding the construction of this document in relation to the conditions in the present. Relationships between the history of school prayer, the archive of "Music Educators Journal," and relevant case law are investigated. Postsecularsim is described and explored as a possible theoretical framework for a future revision of the position statement.

Reports on the appointment of Lynn M. Brinckmeyer as chairwoman of the Position Statement Committee of the National Association for Music Education in the U.S. Professional career of Brinckmeyer; Plan by Brinckmeyer to form a committee that will develop music education position statements.

Offered are suggestions to teachers for introducing improvisation into the classroom. Improvisational activities include movement, vocal, and related arts projects. (KC)

The author discusses the importance of improvisation, suggesting that improvisation be introduced in the earliest stages of education and be taught through an approach that integrates ear training, sight-reading, instrumental and vocal techniques and theory into a unified and complete understanding of music as a language. Like other national organizations from 1939 to 1945, the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) worked to promote national unity in the United States. It is the position of the Music Educators National Conference that the study of religious music is a vital and appropriate part of the total music experience. To omit sacred music from education would present an incorrect and incomplete concept of the comprehensive nature of the art. (RM)
