Model of DOCK8 regulation of mucosal IgA responses.In the presence of DOCK8, B cells can make IgA responses to food antigens, toxins, and certain bacteria such as segmented filamentous bacteria (SFB). These cells then migrate to the lamina propria and become terminally differentiated plasma cells with specific metabolic requirements for maintenance. In the absence of DOCK8, B cells can be activated in response to food antigens, toxins and bacteria and migrate to the lamina propria; however, they are unable to be sustained as terminally differentiated plasma cells due to impaired respiration, resulting in loss of specific IgA antibodies in the gut lumen.
