The transmission of wild poliovirus was determined to be interrupted on Sep 29, 1994, by the International Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication in the Americas. The commission was sanctioned by the Pan American Health Organization to monitor the number of incidents of the disease and inoculation levels in the countries of the region. The last case of polio caused by the wild poliovirus in the Americas was reported in 1991., In May 1985, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) proposed the goal of interruption of wild poliovirus transmission in the Western Hemisphere by 1990(1).
