An alternative hybrid sigma-pressure terrain-following coordinate is presented here that provides smoother coordinate surfaces over terrain by allowing a more rapid decay of the influence of smaller-scale topographic structures with height. This is accomplished by first defining a reference surface pressure that includes the influence of the underlying topography. A smoothed version of this reference surface pressure is then created that represents the larger-scale features of the topography, while the deviations from the smoothed profile contain the smaller-scale terrain structures. In the hybrid-sigma coordinate formulation presented here, the influences of these deviations in the reference surface pressure from their smoothed values are removed more rapidly with increasing height, thereby producing smoother coordinate surfaces. Testing this approach using several idealized simulations demonstrates a significant reduction in the artificial circulations compared to those arising with the basic sigma or the conventional hybrid sigma coordinate, confirming the beneficial aspects of the smoothed hybrid coordinate surfaces. The smoothed hybrid sigma-pressure coordinate proposed here provides flexibility in reducing the influence of the terrain on the coordinate surfaces and can be easily substituted for the basic hybrid sigma-pressure coordinate. Significance Statement: Terrain-following vertical coordinates are widely employed in atmospheric numerical models because of their advantages in implementing boundary conditions at the surface. However, it is well known that these coordinates can promote artificial circulations due to numerical errors in computing horizontal pressure gradients and advection along the transformed coordinate surfaces. The purpose of this study is to improve the performance of a pressure-based terrain-following (sigma) hybrid vertical coordinate by selectively removing the influences of smaller-scale terrain features, which results in smoother coordinate surfaces. We present a detailed evaluation of the turbulence forecast product eddy dissipation parameter (EDP) used at the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD). It is based on the turbulence parameterization scheme TURBDIFF, which is operational within the Icosahedral Nonhydrostatic (ICON) numerical weather prediction model used operationally by DWD. For aviation purposes, the procedure provides the cubic root of the eddy dissipation rate ε1/3 as an overall turbulence index. This quantity is a widely used measure for turbulence intensity as experienced by aircraft. The scheme includes additional sources of turbulent kinetic energy with particular relevance to aviation, which are briefly introduced. These sources describe turbulence generation by the subgrid-scale action of wake eddies, mountain waves, and convection, as well as horizontal shear as found close to fronts or the jet stream. Furthermore, we introduce a postprocessing calibration to an empirical EDR distribution, and we demonstrate the potential as well as limitations of the final EDP-based turbulence forecast by considering several case studies of typical turbulence events. Finally, we reveal the forecasting capability of this product by verifying the model results against one year of aircraft in situ EDR measurements from commercial aircraft. We find that the forecasted EDP performs favorably when compared to the Ellrod index. In particular, the turbulence signal from deep convection, which is accounted for in the EDP product, is advantageous when spatial nonlocality is allowed in the verification procedure. Sundowner winds are downslope gusty winds often observed on the southern slopes of the Santa Ynez Mountains (SYM) in coastal Santa Barbara (SB), California. They typically peak near sunset and exhibit characteristics of downslope windstorms through the evening. They are SB's most critical fire weather in all seasons and represent a major hazard for aviation. The Sundowner Winds Experiment Pilot Study was designed to evaluate vertical profiles of winds, temperature, humidity, and stability leeward of the SYM during a Sundowner event. This was accomplished by launching 3-hourly radiosondes during a significant Sundowner event on 28–29 April 2018. This study showed that winds in the lee of the SYM exhibit complex spatial and temporal patterns. Vertical profiles showed a transition from humid onshore winds from morning to midafternoon to very pronounced offshore winds during the evening after sunset. These winds accompanied mountain waves and a northerly nocturnal lee jet with variable temporal behavior. Around sunset, the jet was characterized by strong wind speeds enhanced by mountain-wave breaking. Winds weakened considerably at 2300 PDT 29 April but enhanced dramatically at 0200 PDT 29 April at much lower elevations. These transitions were accompanied by changes in stability profiles and in the Richardson number. A simulation with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model at 1-km grid spacing was examined to evaluate the skill of the model in capturing the observed winds and stability profiles and to assess mesoscale processes associated with this event. This paper describes the results of a comprehensive analysis of the atmospheric conditions during the Deep Propagating Gravity Wave Experiment (DEEPWAVE) campaign in austral winter 2014. Different datasets and diagnostics are combined to characterize the background atmosphere from the troposphere to the upper mesosphere. How weather regimes and the atmospheric state compare to climatological conditions is reported upon and how they relate to the airborne and ground-based gravity wave observations is also explored. Key results of this study are the dominance of tropospheric blocking situations and low-level southwesterly flows over New Zealand during June-August 2014. A varying tropopause inversion layer was found to be connected to varying vertical energy fluxes and is, therefore, an important feature with respect to wave reflection. The subtropical jet was frequently diverted south from its climatological position at 30°S and was most often involved in strong forcing events of mountain waves at the Southern Alps. The polar front jet was typically responsible for moderate and weak tropospheric forcing of mountain waves. The stratospheric planetary wave activity amplified in July leading to a displacement of the Antarctic polar vortex. This reduced the stratospheric wind minimum by about 10 m s−1 above New Zealand making breaking of large-amplitude gravity waves more likely. Satellite observations in the upper stratosphere revealed that orographic gravity wave variances for 2014 were largest in May-July (i.e., the period of the DEEPWAVE field phase). A radiosonde observation method is presented, consisting of simultaneous radiosonde observations at closely spaced multiple sites using balloons with varied buoyancies. This method was employed during a strong wind event (Suzuka-oroshi) on the lee side of the Suzuka mountain range, Japan, to derive the detailed structure of the wind as it crossed the mountains. Batches of six radiosondes were launched simultaneously from a line of four sites, using balloons with three different degrees of buoyancy. The four sites were 13 km apart along a 35-km-long transect roughly aligned with the prevailing wind. The observations documented two flow regimes: a downslope flow perpendicular to the mountain range, similar to a windstorm, and an unexpectedly strong low-level jet flowing parallel to the mountain range. The method was more successful at delineating the first regime than the second. The first regime was well simulated by a numerical experiment, but the second regime was not. The vertical wind associated with the downslope windstorm was inferred from the changing slopes of potential temperature isentropes. Comparison of the balloon ascent rates with these isentropes meanders and the simulated vertical wind showed that fluctuations in balloon ascent rate provide reliable information on the vertical direction of the wind. An analysis of the second regime using a long-term meteorological dataset shows that the onset of the low-level jet is related to the synoptic-scale shift in vorticity from positive to negative in the observation area. A mesoscale atmospheric numerical model is used to simulate two cases of Kármán vortex shedding in the lee of Jeju Island, South Korea, in the winter of 2013. Observed cloud patterns associated with the Kármán vortex shedding are successfully reproduced. When the winter monsoon flows out from the Eurasian continent, a convective mixed layer develops through the supply of heat and moisture from the relatively warm Yellow Sea and encounters Jeju Island and dynamical conditions favorable for the formation of lee vortices are realized. Vortices that form behind the island induce updrafts to trigger cloud formation at the top of the convective boundary layer. A sensitivity experiment in which surface drag on the island is eliminated demonstrates that the formation mechanism of the atmospheric Kármán vortex shedding is different from that behind a bluff body in classical fluid mechanics. Advances in computing are enabling atmospheric models to operate at increasingly fine resolution, giving rise to more variations in the underlying orography being captured by the model grid. Consequently, high-resolution models must overcome the problems associated with traditional terrain-following approaches of spurious winds and instabilities generated in the vicinity of steep and complex terrain. Cut-cell representations of orography present atmospheric models with an alternative to terrain-following vertical coordinates. This work explores the capabilities of a cut-cell representation of orography for idealized orographically forced flows. The orographic surface is represented within the model by continuous piecewise bilinear surfaces that intersect the regular Cartesian grid creating cut cells. An approximate finite-volume method for use with advection-form governing equations is implemented to solve flows through the resulting irregularly shaped grid boxes. Comparison with a benchmark orographic test case for nonhydrostatic flow shows very good results. Further tests demonstrate the cut-cell method for flow around 3D isolated hills and stably resolving flows over very steep orography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numerical simulations of flow over steep terrain using 11 different nonhydrostatic numerical models are compared and analyzed. A basic benchmark and five other test cases are simulated in a two-dimensional framework using the same initial state, which is based on conditions during Intensive Observation Period (IOP) 6 of the Terrain-Induced Rotor Experiment (T-REX), in which intense mountain-wave activity was observed. All of the models use an identical horizontal resolution of 1 km and the same vertical resolution. The six simulated test cases use various terrain heights: a 100-m bell-shaped hill, a 1000-m idealized ridge that is steeper on the lee slope, a 2500-m ridge with the same terrain shape, and a cross-Sierra terrain profile. The models are tested with both free-slip and no-slip lower boundary conditions. The results indicate a surprisingly diverse spectrum of simulated mountain-wave characteristics including lee waves, hydraulic-like jump features, and gravity wave breaking. The vertical velocity standard deviation is twice as large in the free-slip experiments relative to the no-slip simulations. Nevertheless, the no-slip simulations also exhibit considerable variations in the wave characteristics. The results imply relatively low predictability of key characteristics of topographically forced flows such as the strength of downslope winds and stratospheric wave breaking. The vertical flux of horizontal momentum, which is a domain-integrated quantity, exhibits considerable spread among the models, particularly for the experiments with the 2500-m ridge and Sierra terrain. The differences among the various model simulations, all initialized with identical initial states, suggest that model dynamical cores may be an important component of diversity for the design of mesoscale ensemble systems for topographically forced flows. Measurements from the National Science Foundation/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF/NCAR) Gulfstream V (G-V) obtained during the recent Terrain-Induced Rotor Experiment (T-REX) indicate marked differences in the character of the wave response between repeated flight tracks across the Sierra Nevada, which were separated by a distance of approximately 50 km. Observations from several of the G-V research flights indicate that the vertical velocities in the primary wave exhibited variations up to a factor of 2 between the southern and northern portions of the racetrack flight segments in the lower stratosphere, with the largest amplitude waves most often occurring over the southern flight leg, which has a terrain maximum that is 800 m lower than the northern leg. Multiple racetracks at 11.7- and 13.1-km altitudes indicate that these differences were repeatable, which is suggestive that the deviations were likely due to vertically propagating mountain waves that varied systematically in amplitude rather than associated with transients. The cross-mountain horizontal velocity perturbations are also a maximum above the southern portion of the Sierra Nevada ridge. Real data and idealized nonhydrostatic numerical model simulations are used to test the hypothesis that the observed variability in the wave amplitude and characteristics in the along-barrier direction is a consequence of blocking by the three-dimensional Sierra Nevada and the Coriolis effect. The numerical simulation results suggest that wave launching is sensitive to the overall three-dimensional characteristics of the Sierra Nevada barrier, which has an important impact on the wave amplitude and characteristics in the lower stratosphere. Real-time high-resolution Coupled Ocean--Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS) forecasts successfully capture the along-barrier variations in the wave amplitude (using vertical velocity as a proxy) as well as skillfully distinguishing between large- and small-amplitude stratospheric wave events during T-REX.
