Search

Stellar flares offer invaluable insights into stellar magnetic activity and exoplanetary environments. Automated flare detection enables exploiting vast photometric data sets from missions like Kepler. This paper presents FCN4Flare, a deep learning approach using fully convolutional networks (FCN) for precise point-to-point flare prediction regardless of light-curve length. Key innovations include the NaN Mask to handle missing data automatedly, and the Mask Dice loss to mitigate severe class imbalance. Experimental results show that FCN4Flare significantly outperforms previous methods, achieving a Dice coefficient of 0.64 compared to the state-of-the-art of 0.12. Applying FCN4Flare to Kepler-LAMOST data, we compile a catalogue of 30 285 high-confidence flares across 1426 stars. Flare energies are estimated and stellar/exoplanet properties analysed, identifying pronounced activity for an M-dwarf hosting a habitable zone planet. This work overcomes limitations of prior flare detection methods via deep learning, enabling new scientific discoveries through analysis of photometric time-series data. In this paper, we examine how stellar flare activity varies with evolution stage, rotation period, and spectral type. To do this, we examine the distributions of the flare equivalent duration on a logarithmic scale, which we consider as an indicator of the maximum energy level that a star can reach in white-light flares. We conduct these analyses using two distinct statistical models of data obtained from white-light flare patrols of 33 stars. These models are the one-phase exponential association (OPEA) and cumulative flare frequency models. The results show that the value of the OPEA model parameter Plateau has a linear relationship with the stellar B – V colour index and the rotation period. In addition, it is shown that flare time-scales, and therefore the maximum magnetic loop height that stars can have, vary according to the evolutionary stage of the star. Finally, it is concluded that the cumulative flare frequency parameters of the stars are not as effective as the OPEA parameters at exhibiting these variations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the results obtained from the statistical models of flares observed with ground-based telescopes and TESS observations for the UV Ceti-type stars AD Leo and V1005 Ori are presented. The distribution of flare equivalent duration versus total flare duration for the flares of both stars, observed with different telescopes, has been modelled using the one-phase exponential association (OPEA) model. Although no bifurcation was observed in the models derived with the flare data of V1005 Ori, the OPEA model exhibited bifurcation in almost all observation data of AD Leo. While many similar studies have shown that such models derived for a star do not vary over time and exhibit a single distribution in the same observation season, the stratification in AD Leo's distributions and consequently in its model is an unexpected result. We present a new method to distinguish between different states (e.g. high and low, quiescent and flaring) in astronomical sources with count data. The method models the underlying physical process as latent variables following a continuous-space Markov chain that determines the expected Poisson counts in observed light curves in multiple passbands. For the underlying state process, we consider several autoregressive processes, yielding continuous-space hidden Markov models of varying complexity. Under these models, we can infer the state that the object is in at any given time. The continuous state predictions from these models are then dichotomized with the help of a finite mixture model to produce state classifications. We apply these techniques to X-ray data from the active dMe flare star EV Lac, splitting the data into quiescent and flaring states. We find that a first-order vector autoregressive process efficiently separates flaring from quiescence: flaring occurs over 30 per cent–40 per cent of the observation durations, a well-defined persistent quiescent state can be identified, and the flaring state is characterized by higher plasma temperatures and emission measures. Most of the stars in the Universe are M spectral class dwarfs, which are known to be the source of bright and frequent stellar flares. In this paper, we propose new approaches to discover M-dwarf flares in ground-based photometric surveys. We employ two approaches: a modification of a traditional method of parametric fit search and a machine learning algorithm based on active anomaly detection. The algorithms are applied to Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) data release 8, which includes the data from the ZTF high-cadence survey, allowing us to reveal flares lasting from minutes to hours. We analyse over 35 million ZTF light curves and visually scrutinize 1168 candidates suggested by the algorithms to filter out artefacts, occultations of a star by an asteroid, and other types of known variable objects. The result of this analysis is the largest catalogue of ZTF flaring stars to date, representing 134 flares with amplitudes ranging from −0.2 to −4.6 mag, including repeated flares. Using Pan-STARRS DR2 colours, we assign a spectral subclass to each object in the sample. For 13 flares with well-sampled light curves and available geometric distances from Gaia DR3, we estimate the bolometric energy. This research shows that the proposed methods combined with the ZTF's cadence strategy are suitable for identifying M-dwarf flares and other fast transients, allowing for the extraction of significant astrophysical information from their light curves. The far-ultraviolet (FUV) flare activity of low-mass stars has become a focus in our understanding of the exoplanet atmospheres and how they evolve. However, direct detection of FUV flares and measurements of their energies and rates are limited by the need for space-based observations. The difficulty of obtaining such observations may push some works to use widely available optical data to calibrate multiwavelength spectral models that describe UV and optical flare emission. These models either use single temperature blackbody curves to describe this emission, or combine a blackbody curve with archival spectra. These calibrated models would then be used to predict the FUV flare rates of low-mass stars of interest. To aid these works, we used TESS optical photometry and archival HST FUV spectroscopy to test the FUV predictions of literature flare models. We tested models for partially (M0–M2) and fully convective (M4–M5) stars, 40 Myr and field age stars, and optically quiet stars. We calculated FUV energy correction factors that can be used to bring the FUV predictions of tested models in line with observations. A flare model combining optical and NUV blackbody emission with FUV emission based on HST observations provided the best estimate of FUV flare activity, where others underestimated the emission at all ages, masses, and activity levels, by up to a factor of 104 for combined FUV continuum and line emission and greater for individual emission lines. We identify 182 flares on 158 stars within 100 pc of the Sun in both the near-ultraviolet (NUV; |$1750\!-\!2750$|  Å) and far-ultraviolet (FUV; |$1350\!-\!1750$|  Å) using high-cadence light curves from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer. Ultraviolet (UV) emission from stellar flares plays a crucial role in determining the habitability of exoplanetary systems. However, whether such UV emission promotes or threatens such life depends strongly on the energetics of these flares. Most studies assessing the effect of flares on planetary habitability assume a 9000 K blackbody spectral energy distribution that produces more NUV flux than FUV flux (⁠|$\mathcal {R} \equiv F_{\rm FUV} / F_{\rm NUV} \approx \frac{1}{6}$|⁠). Instead, we observe the opposite with the excess FUV reaching |$\mathcal {R} \approx \frac{1}{2}\!-\!2$|⁠ , roughly |$3\!-\!12$| times the expectation of a 9000 K blackbody. The ratio of FUV to NUV time-integrated flare energies is 3.0 times higher on average than would be predicted by a constant 9000 K blackbody during the flare. Finally, we find that the FUV/NUV ratio at peak tentatively correlates (⁠|${\sim} 2 \sigma$| significance) both with total UV flare energy and with the G  − RP colour of the host star. The Sun's history is still a subject of interest to modern astrophysics. Observationally constrained rates of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) of young solar analogues are still lacking, as those require dedicated monitoring. We present medium-resolution optical spectroscopic monitoring of a small sample of bright and prominent solar analogues over a period of 3 yr using the 0.5-m telescope at observatory Lustbühel Graz (OLG) of the University of Graz, Austria. The aim is the detection of flares and CMEs from those spectra. In more than 1700 h of spectroscopic monitoring, we found signatures of four flares and one filament eruption on EK Dra which has been reported in previous literature, but we complementarily extended the data to cover the latter phase. The other stars did not reveal detectable signatures of activity. For these non-detections, we derive upper limits of occurrence rates of very massive CMEs, which are detectable with our observational setup, ranging from 0.1 to 2.2 d−1, but these may be even smaller than the given rates considering observational biases. Furthermore, we investigate the detectability of flares/CMEs in OLG spectra by utilizing solar 2D Hα spectra from Mees Solar Observatory. We find that solar-sized events are not detectable within our observations. By scaling up the size of the solar event, we show that with a fractional active region area of 18 per cent in residual spectra and 24 per cent in equivalent width time series derived from the same residuals that solar events are detectable if they had hypothetically occurred on HN Peg. The relativistic outflows that produce long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) can be described by a structured jet model where prompt |$\gamma$| -ray emission is restricted to a narrow region in the jet's core. Viewing the jet off-axis from the core, a population of afterglows without an associated GRB detection can be predicted. In this work, we conduct an archival search for these 'orphan' afterglows (OAs) with minute-cadence, deep (⁠|$g\sim 23$|⁠) data from the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) taken as part of the Deeper, Wider, Faster programme (DWF). We introduce a method to select fast-evolving OA candidates within DWF data that comprises a machine learning model, based on a realistic synthetic population of OAs. Using this classifier, we recover 51 OA candidates. Of these candidates, 42 are likely flare events from M-class stars. The remaining nine possess quiescent, coincident sources in archival data with angular profiles consistent with a star and are inconsistent with the expected population of LGRB host galaxies. We therefore conclude that these are likely Galactic events. We calculate an upper limit on the rate of OAs down to |$g\lt 22$| AB mag of 7.46 deg |$^{-2}$| yr |$^{-1}$| using our criteria and constrain possible jet structures. We also place an upper limit of the characteristic angle between the |$\gamma$| -ray-emitting region and the jet's half-opening angle. For a smooth power law and a power law with core jet model, respectively, these values are |$58.3^{\circ }$| and |$56.6^{\circ }$|⁠ , for a power-law index of 0.8 and |$75.3^{\circ }$| and |$76.8^{\circ }$| for a power-law index of 1.2. Flares from magnetically active dwarf stars should produce relativistic particles capable of creating γ-rays. So far, the only isolated main-sequence star besides the Sun to have been detected in γ-rays is TVLM 513−46546. Detecting γ-ray flares from more dwarf stars can improve our understanding of their magnetospheric properties, and could also indicate a diminished likelihood of their planets' habitability. In this work, we stack data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope during a large number of events identified from optical and X-ray flare surveys. We report an upper limit of γ-ray emission from the population of flare stars. Stacking results towards control positions are consistent with a non-detection. We compare these results to observed solar γ-ray flares and against a model of emission from neutral pion decay. The upper limit is consistent with solar flares when scaled to the flare energies and distances of the target stars. Radio bursts of magnetically active stars reveal the intensity and activity of the stellar magnetic field. They may also be related to the planets around the stars. We monitored a radio-active star, AD Leonis, 3000 s d−1 for 17 d in 2020 November, and 5000 s d−1 for 5 d in 2023 July with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Based on the simultaneous flux increases in Stokes I and Stokes V, one left-hand circular polarized radio burst is identified. The |$\sim 50~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| degree of circular polarization indicates the burst being originated from non-thermal radiation related to the stellar magnetic field. Combining the newly discovered burst with previous observations of radio and X-ray bursts from AD Leonis, we did a periodicity analysis for the 49 bursts in total. No periodicity with confidence level >3σ is found, while a candidate period of 3.04 d at ≈2σ confidence level is presented and discussed. Results of recent FAST observations and the periodicity analysis suggest a more compact campaign of observation towards this source, from which a more optimistic result of period search could be achieved. T Tauri stars are known to be magnetically active stars subject to strong flares observed in X-rays. These flares are likely due to intense magnetic reconnection events during which a part of the stored magnetic energy is converted into kinetic energy of supra-thermal particles. Since T Tauri stars are surrounded by an accretion disc, these particles may influence the disc dynamics and chemistry. This work continues on a previous stationary model, which showed that energetic particles accelerated during flares can produce a strong ionization rate at high column densities in the inner accretion disc. The present model includes non-stationary sequences of flaring events sampled by a Chandra X-ray survey of nearby young stellar objects. We calculate the averaged ionization rate expected in a radius range 0.08–0.6 au from the central star. We confirm that energetic particles produced by the flares dominate the ionization of the disc up to column densities of |$10^{25}~\rm {cm^{-2}}$|⁠. We further study the main consequences of this additional source of ionization on the viscosity, the accretion rate, the volumetric heating rate, and the chemical complexity of inner protoplanetary discs. Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars are intermediate-mass pre-main-sequence stars, characterized by infrared (IR) excess and emission lines. They are observed to emit X-rays, whose origin is a matter of discussion and not settled yet. X-ray emission is not expected in HAeBe stars, as they lack the subsurface convective zone. In this study, we retrieved observations from the Chandra archive for 62 HAeBe stars, among which 44 sources (detection fraction ∼71  per cent) were detected in X-rays, with 7 being new detections. We use this sample as a test bed to conduct a comparative analysis of the X-ray properties of HAeBe stars and their low-mass counterparts, T Tauri stars (TTSs). Further, we compare the X-ray properties of HAeBe stars and TTSs with optical and IR properties to constrain the X-ray emission mechanism in HAeBe stars. We found no correlation between X-ray emission and disc properties of HAeBe stars, confirming that X-rays are not related to accretion shocks. About 56  per cent of HAeBe stars without any known subarcsec companions have lower plasma temperatures (kT ≤ 2 keV). We observe flaring/variability in HAeBe stars with confirmed low-mass companions. These stars show plasma temperatures > 2 keV, similar to TTSs. Guided by this information, we discuss the role of a T Tauri companion for X-ray emission seen in our sample of HAeBe stars. From the results obtained in this paper, we suggest that X-ray emission from HAeBe stars may not be related to accretion shocks or hidden TTS, but rather can be due to magnetically driven coronal emission. M dwarfs are often highly flare productive, and changes in the rate of flaring can potentially affect the radiation and energetic particles an exoplanet is exposed to. Rate variability has been found to be rare on G-type stars, and there has been limited study of the variability of flaring on M dwarfs. Using data from the TESS mission up to Observation Sector 66, we analyse 658 stars ranging from K7 to M5 to test for superflare rate variability by calculating an optimal piecewise constant-rate model for flare occurrence using a Bayesian algorithm and identify 66 stars with rate changes, a larger proportion than our previous study into G-type stars (7 out of 270 stars). We find that rate variability does not depend on the stellar parameters for our sample. We investigate how the flare-frequency distribution for these stars varies and whether this variation affects exoplanet habitability. No stars in our sample provide sufficient UV flux to support prebiotic chemistry. We investigate the phase distributions on the rate variable stars, finding 11 cases of potential phase dependence in flaring across seven stars. We also compare the Bayesian method to another measure of activity, the fraction of flux emitted through flares, and do not observe a consistent relationship between this flaring activity metric and the optimal Bayesian model. We discuss the possible reasons for the discrepancy and identify a problem with the flaring activity metric due to the power-law distribution of the flare events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the results of a multiwavelength Professional–Amateur campaign to study the behaviour of flares from the active M1.5V star binary CR Draconis. CR Dra was observed with Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) 20-s photometry, Swift near-ultraviolet (NUV) grism spectroscopy and with ground-based optical photometry and spectroscopy from a global collaboration of amateur astronomers. We detected 14 flares with TESS and Swift simultaneously, one of which also had simultaneous ground-based photometry and spectroscopy. We used the simultaneous two-colour optical and NUV observations to characterize the temperature evolution of the flare and test the accuracy of using optical data to predict NUV emission. We measured a peak temperature of |$7100^{+150}_{-130}$| K for this flare, cooler than the typically assumed 9000 K blackbody model used by flare studies. We also found that the 9000 K blackbody overestimated the NUV flux for other flares in our sample, which we attributed to our Swift observations occurring during flare decays, highlighting the phase-dependence for the accuracy of flare models. The population of radio-loud stars has to date been studied primarily through either targeted observations of a small number of highly active stars or wide-field, single-epoch surveys that cannot easily distinguish stellar emission from background extragalactic sources. As a result it has been difficult to constrain population statistics such as the surface density and fraction of the population producing radio emission in a particular variable or spectral class. In this paper, we present a sample of 36 radio stars detected in a circular polarization search of the multi-epoch Variables and Slow Transients (VAST) pilot survey with ASKAP at 887.5 MHz. Through repeat sampling of the VAST pilot survey footprint we find an upper limit to the duty cycle of M-dwarf radio bursts of |$8.5 \,\rm {per\,cent}$|⁠ , and that at least 10 ± 3 |$\rm {per\,cent}$| of the population should produce radio bursts more luminous than |$10^{15} \,\rm {erg}\mathrm{s}^{-1} \,\mathrm{Hz}^{-1}$|⁠. We infer a lower limit on the long-term surface density of such bursts in a shallow |$1.25 \,\mathrm{m}\rm {Jy}\rm\ {PSF}^{-1}$| sensitivity survey of |${9}^{\, +{11}}_{-{7}}\times 10^{-3}$|   |$\,\deg ^{-2}$| and an instantaneous radio star surface density of 1.7 ± 0.2 × 10−3   |$\,\deg ^{-2}$| on 12 min time-scales. Based on these rates we anticipate ∼200 ± 50 new radio star detections per year over the full VAST survey and |${41\, 000}^{\, +{10\, 000}}_{-{9\, 000}}$| in next-generation all-sky surveys with the Square Kilometre Array. Since its discovery in 1992, GRS 1915 + 105 has been among the brightest sources in the X-ray sky. However, in early 2018, it dimmed significantly and has stayed in this faint state ever since. We report on AstroSat and NuSTAR observation of GRS 1915 + 105 in its unusual low/hard state during 2019 May. We performed time-resolved spectroscopy of the X-ray flares observed in this state and found that the spectra can be fitted well using highly ionized absorption models. We further show that the spectra can also be fitted using a highly relativistic reflection dominated model, where for the lamp post geometry, the X-ray emitting source is always very close to the central black hole. For both interpretations, the flare can be attributed to a change in the intrinsic flux, rather than dramatic variation in the absorption or geometry. These reflection dominated spectra are very similar to the reflection dominated spectra reported for active galactic nuclei in their low flux states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of stellar flares has increased with new observations from CoRoT, Kepler , and TESS satellites, revealing the broad-band visible emission from these events. Typically, stellar flares have been modelled as 104 K blackbody plasma to obtain estimates of their total energy. In the Sun, white-light flares (WLFs) are much fainter than their stellar counterparts, and normally can only be detected via spatially resolved observations. Identifying the radiation mechanism for the formation of the visible spectrum from solar and stellar flares is crucial to understand the energy transfer processes during these events, but spectral data for WLFs are relatively rare, and insufficient to remove the ambiguity of their origin: photospheric blackbody radiation and/or Paschen continuum from hydrogen recombination in the chromosphere. We employed an analytical solution for the recombination continuum of hydrogen instead of the typically assumed 104 K blackbody spectrum to study the energy of stellar flares and infer their fractional area coverage. We investigated 37 events from Kepler-411 and five events from Kepler-396, using both radiation mechanisms. We find that estimates for the total flare energy from the H recombination spectrum are about an order of magnitude lower than the values obtained from the blackbody radiation. Given the known energy transfer processes in flares, we argue that the former is a physically more plausible model than the latter to explain the origin of the broad-band optical emission from flares. We present a photometric characterization of 208 ultra-cool dwarfs (UCDs) with spectral types between M4 and L4, from 20-s and 2-min cadence TESS light curves. We determine rotation periods for 87 objects (⁠|$\sim 42~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) and identify 778 flare events in 103 UCDs (⁠|$\sim 49.5~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠). For 777 flaring events (corresponding to 102 objects), we derive bolometric energies between 2.1 × 1030 and |$1.1 \times 10^{34}\ \mathrm{erg}$|⁠ , with 56 superflare events. No transiting planets or eclipsing binaries were identified. We find that the fraction of UCDs with rotation and flaring activity is, at least, 20 per cent higher in M4–M6 spectral types than in later UCDs (M7–L4). For spectral types between M4 and L0, we measure the slope of the flare bolometric energy–duration correlation to be γ = 0.497 ± 0.058, which agrees with that found in previous studies for solar-type and M dwarfs. Moreover, we determine the slope of the flare frequency distribution to be α = −1.75 ± 0.04 for M4–M5 dwarfs, α = −1.69 ± 0.04 and α = −1.72 ± 0.1 for M6–M7 and M8–L0 dwarfs, respectively, which are consistent with previous works that exclusively analysed UCDs. These results support the idea that independently of the physical mechanisms that produce magnetic activity, the characteristics of the rotational modulation and flares are similar for both fully convective UCDs and partially convective solar-type and early-M stars. White-light superflares from ultra-cool stars are thought to be resulted from magnetic reconnection, but the magnetic dynamics in a fully convective star is not clear yet. In this paper, we report a stellar superflare detected with the ground wide angle camera (GWAC), along with rapid follow-ups with the F60A, Xinglong 2.16-m, and LCOGT telescopes. The effective temperature of the counterpart is estimated to be 2200 ± 50 K by the BT-Settl model, corresponding to a spectral type of L0. The R -band light curve can be modelled as a sum of three exponential decay components, where the impulsive component contributes a fraction of 23 per cent of the total energy, while the gradual and the shallower decay phases emit 42 per cent and 35 per cent of the total energy, respectively. The strong and variable Balmer narrow emission lines indicate the large amplitude flare is resulted from magnetic activity. The bolometric energy released is about 6.4 × 1033 erg, equivalent to an energy release in a duration of 143.7 h at its quiescent level. The amplitude of Δ R  = −8.6 mag (or Δ V  = −11.2 mag), placing it one of the highest amplitudes of any ultra-cool star recorded with excellent temporal resolution. We argue that a stellar flare with such rapidly decaying and huge amplitude at distances greater than 1 kpc may be false positive in searching for counterparts of catastrophic events such as gravitational wave events or gamma-ray bursts, which are valuable in time-domain astronomy and should be given more attention. In many star–planet systems discovered so far, the innermost planet orbits within only a few stellar radii. In these systems, planets could become in situ probes of the extended stellar magnetic field. Because they disturb the field as they move, they are expected to trigger flares in the corona. Potential differences to the energies and morphologies of intrinsic flares are poorly constrained. However, as we expect planet-induced flares to correlate with the planet's orbital period, we can identify them from a clustering of flares in phase with the planet's orbit. We used the excellent phase coverage from Kepler and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite to find flaring star–planet systems, compile a catalogue of all their flares, and measure how much they cluster in orbital phase. In the 1811 searched systems, we found 25 single stars with three or more flares each. We quantified the significance of the clustering in each system, and compared it against the theoretically expected power of magnetic interaction that leads to planet-induced flaring. Most systems do not show any clustering, consistent with low expected power. Those we expect to show clustering fall on two branches. An inactive one, without any signs of clustering, and a tentative active one, where the clustering becomes more pronounced as the expected power of interaction increases. The flares in HIP 67522 are prominently clustered (p < 0.006). This young hot Jupiter system is the most promising candidate for magnetic star–planet interaction in our sample. We present the analyses of intense X-ray flares detected on the active fast rotator AB Dor using observations from the XMM–Newton. A total of 21 flares are detected, and 13 flares are analysed in detail. The total X-ray energy of these flares is found to be in the range of 1034−36 erg, in which the peak flare flux increased up to 34 times from the pre-/post-flaring states for the strongest observed flare. The duration of these flaring events is found to be 0.7 to 5.8 h. The quiescent state X-ray spectra are found to be explained by a three-temperature plasma with average temperatures of 0.29, 0.95, and 1.9 keV, respectively. The temperatures, emission measures, and abundances are found to be varying during the flares. The peak flare temperature was found in the 31–89 MK range, whereas the peak emission measure was 1052.5–54.7 cm−3 . The abundances vary during the flares and increase by a factor of ∼3 from the quiescent value for the strongest detected flare. The variation in individual abundances follows the inverse-FIP effect in quiescent and flare phases. The X-ray light curves of AB Dor are found to exhibit rotational modulation. The semi-loop lengths of the flaring events are derived in the range of 109.9−10.7  cm, whereas the minimum magnetic field to confine the plasma in the flaring loop is estimated between 200 and 700 G. A new generation of radio telescopes with excellent sensitivity, instantaneous uv coverage, and large fields of view, are providing unprecedented opportunities for performing commensal transient searches. Here, we present such a commensal search in deep observations of short gamma-ray burst fields carried out with the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa at 1.3 GHz. These four hour observations of eight different fields span survey lengths of weeks to months. We also carry out transient searches in time slices of the full observations, at time-scales of 15 min and 8 s. We find 122 variable sources on the long time-scales, of which 52 are likely active galactic nuclei, but there are likely also some radio flaring stars. While the variability is intrinsic in at least two cases, most of it is consistent with interstellar scintillation. In this study, we also place constraints on transient rates based on state-of-the-art transient simulations codes. We place an upper limit of 2 × 10−4 transients per day per square degree for transients with peak flux of 5 mJy, and an upper limit of 2.5 × 10−2 transients per day per square degree for transients with a fluence of 10 Jy ms, the minimum detectable fluence of our survey. NGC 2071 is a star-forming region that overlaps with three γ-ray sources detected by the Fermi Space Telescope. We propose that strong flare activity in T Tauri stars could produce γ-ray emission in a way that makes them a counterpart to some unidentified sources detected by the Large Area Telescope aboard the Fermi satellite. We have performed a spectral and temporal analysis for two Fermi data sets: the first 2 yr and the entire 14 yr of observations. We have found that the γ-ray source is detectable at 3.2σ above the background at energies above 100 GeV during the first 2 yr of observation. The analysis of the expected frequency of the highest energy flares occurring in T Tauri stars is consistent with our estimate. In addition, we have determined the minimum energy of the flare that would produce γ-ray emission, which is ∼5 × 1037 erg. This agreement becomes a hard observational constraint supporting previous hypotheses about rare flares as the origin of unidentified γ-ray sources in star-forming regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-cadence observations of high-energy stellar flares from cool and ultracool dwarfs are often limited by the faint nature of their host stars. Many low-mass sources cannot be detected in quiescence by photometric surveys, meaning they are not targeted for high-cadence observations. This reduces the chances of detecting the rarest high-energy flare events. We used the 13-s cadence full-frame images of Next-Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) to search for flares from M and L dwarfs. This included stars that were too faint to detect in quiescence. We detect 160 flares from 135 stars, with spectral types ranging from M3 to L2.5. We use our sample to study the energies, amplitudes and durations of flares from M and L dwarfs. We measure bolometric flare energies up to 4.5 × 1034 erg for ultracool dwarfs, but conclude that we have not reached a maximum limit to the energy released during white-light flares. We use our results to study the incidence rate of flares of mid- and late-M stars, not accounting for age or binarity, and find that 1.4 ± 0.4 and |$9^{+16}_{-3}$|  per cent of mid- and late-M stars, respectively, exhibit flares with amplitudes above 1 mag in the NGTS bandpass. The time-scales of variability in active M dwarfs can be related to their various physical parameters. Thus, it is important to understand such variability to decipher the physics of these objects. In this study, we have performed the low resolution (∼5.7 Å) spectroscopic monitoring of 83 M dwarfs (M0–M6.5) to study the variability of H α/H β emissions; over the time-scales from ∼0.7 to 2.3 h with a cadence of ∼3–10 min. Data of a sample of another 43 late-type M dwarfs (M3.5–M8.5) from the literature are also included to explore the entire spectral sequence. 53 of the objects in our sample (∼64 per cent) show statistically significant short-term variability in H α. We show that this variability in 38 of them are most likely to be related to the flaring events. We find that the early M dwarfs are less variable despite showing higher activity strengths (LH α/Lbol and LH β/Lbol), which saturates around ∼10−3.8 for M0–M4 types. Using archival photometric light curves from TESS and Kepler/K2 missions, the derived chromospheric emission (H α and H β emission) variability is then explored for any plausible systematics with respect to their rotation phase. The variability indicators clearly show higher variability in late-type M dwarfs (M5–M8.5) with shorter rotation periods (<2 d). For 44 sources, their age has been estimated using StarHorse project and possible correlations with variability have been explored. The magnetic activity level of low-mass stars is known to vary as a function of the physical properties of the star. Many studies have shown that the stellar mass and rotation are both important parameters that determine magnetic activity levels. In contrast, the impact of a star's chemical composition on magnetic activity has received comparatively little attention. Data sets for traditional activity proxies, e.g. X-ray emission or calcium emission, are not large enough to search for metallicity trends in a statistically meaningful way. Recently, studies have used the photometric variability amplitude as a proxy for magnetic activity to investigate the role of metallicity because it can be relatively easily measured for large samples of stars. These studies find that magnetic activity and metallicity are positively correlated. In this work, we investigate the link between activity and metallicity further by studying the flaring properties of stars in the Kepler field. Similar to the photometric variability, we find that flaring activity is stronger in more metal-rich stars for a fixed mass and rotation period. We present a study of high-resolution spectra of RS Canum Venaticorum (RS CVn), a prototype of active binary systems. Our data were obtained from 1998 to 2017 using different telescopes. We analyse the chromospheric activity indicators |$\rm{Ca~{\small II}}$| IRT, Hα, |$\rm{Na~{\small I}}$| D1, D2 doublet, |$\rm{He~{\small I}}$| D3, and Hβ using a spectral subtraction technique. The chromospheric emission stems mainly from the K2 IV primary star, while the F5 V secondary star only shows weak emission features in a few of our spectra. We find excess absorption features in the subtracted Hα lines and other activity indicators from spectra taken near primary eclipse, which we ascribe to prominence-like material associated with the primary star. We estimate size limits of these tentative prominences based on the geometry of the binary system, and investigate the physical properties of the strongest prominence. An optical flare, characterized by |$\rm{He~{\small I}}$| D3 line emission, together with stronger emission in other activity lines, was detected. The flare energy is roughly comparable to strong flares observed on other RS CVn-type stars. The chromospherically active longitudes of RS CVn most frequently appear near the two quadratures of the system and display changes between observing runs, which indicates an ongoing evolution of its active regions. The distribution of small-scale magnetic fields in stellar photospheres is an important ingredient in our understanding of the magnetism of low-mass stars. Their spatial distribution connects the field generated in the stellar interior with the outer corona and the large scale field, and thereby affects the space weather of planets. Unfortunately, we lack techniques that can locate them on most low-mass stars. One strategy is to localize field concentrations using the flares that occur in their vicinity. We explore a new method that adapts the spot simulation software fleck to study the modulation of flaring times as a function of active latitude. We use empirical relations to construct flare light curves similar to those available from Kepler and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), search them for flares, and use the waiting times between flares to determine the location of active latitudes. We find that the mean and standard deviations of the waiting time distribution provide a unique diagnostic of flaring latitudes as a function of the number of active regions. Latitudes are best recovered when stars have three or less active regions that flare repeatedly, and active latitude widths below 20 deg; when either increases, the information about the active latitude location is gradually lost. We demonstrate our technique on a sample of flaring G dwarfs observed with the Kepler satellite, and furthermore suggest that combining ensemble methods for spots and flares could overcome the limitations of each individual technique for the localization of surface magnetic fields. Tsinghua University-Ma Huateng Telescopes for Survey (TMTS) aims to detect fast-evolving transients in the Universe, which has led to the discovery of thousands of short-period variables and eclipsing binaries since 2020. In this paper, we present the observed properties of 125 flare stars identified by TMTS within the first two years, with an attempt to constrain their eruption physics. As expected, most of these flares were recorded in late-type red stars with G BP − G RP >2.0 mag; however, the flares associated with bluer stars tend to be on average more energetic and have broader profiles. The peak flux (F peak) of the flare is found to depend strongly on the equivalent duration (ED) of the energy release, i.e. F peak∝ED0.72 ± 0.04, which is consistent with results derived from the Kepler and Evryscope samples. This relation is likely to be related to the magnetic loop emission, while, for the more popular non-thermal electron heating model, a specific time evolution may be required to generate this relation. We notice that flares produced by hotter stars have a flatter F peak - ED relation compared to that from cooler stars. This is related to the statistical discrepancy in light-curve shape of flare events with different colours. In spectra from LAMOST, we find that flare stars have apparently stronger H α emission than inactive stars, especially at the low-temperature end, suggesting that chromospheric activity plays an important role in producing flares. On the other hand, the subclass with frequent flares is found to show H α emission of similar strength in its spectra to that recorded with only a single flare but similar effective temperature, implying that chromospheric activity may not be the only trigger for eruptions. Evidence of efficient acceleration of cosmic rays in massive young stellar objects has been recently reported. Among these massive protostars, S255 NIRS 3, for which extreme flaring events associated with radio jets have been detected, is one of the best objects to test this hypothesis. We search for gamma-ray emission associated with this object in Fermi -LAT data and inspect the gas content in different molecular lines using the MWISP survey. A GeV source dubbed 4FGL J0613.1+1749c lies on top of the MYSO region, where two filamentary ∼10 pc CO structures extend along the same direction of the subparsec radio jets. We investigate the spectrum, morphology, and light curve of the gamma-ray source and compare it with the theoretical emission expected from hadronic and leptonic populations accelerated in the radio jets. We argue that the gamma-ray source could be powered by particles accelerated in the S255 NIRS 3 jets, radiating via bremsstrahlung or proton–proton interaction, and with a synchrotron component shinning in radio from primary or secondary electrons in the case of a leptonic or hadronic population. M-dwarfs are thought to be hostile environments for exoplanets. Stellar events are very common on such stars. These events might cause the atmospheres of exoplanets to change significantly over time. It is not only the major stellar flare events that contribute to this disequilibrium, but the smaller flares might also affect the atmospheres in an accumulating manner. In this study, we aim to investigate the effects of time-dependent stellar activity on the atmospheres of known exoplanets. We simulate the chemistry of GJ 876c, GJ 581c, and GJ 832c that go from H2-dominated to N2-dominated atmospheres using observed stellar spectra from the MUSCLES collaboration. We make use of the chemical kinetics code vulcan and implement a flaring routine that stochastically generates synthetic flares based on observed flare statistics. Using the radiative transfer code petitradtrans , we also simulate the evolution of emission and transmission spectra. We investigate the effect of recurring flares for a total of 11 d covering 515 flares. Results show a significant change in abundance for some relevant species such as H, OH, and CH4, with factors going up to three orders of magnitude difference with respect to the pre-flare abundances. We find a maximum change of ∼12 ppm for CH4 in transmission spectra on GJ 876c. These changes in the spectra remain too small to observe. We also find that the change in abundance and spectra of the planets accumulates throughout time, causing permanent changes in the chemistry. Magnetic reconnection is one of the major particle acceleration processes in space and astrophysical plasmas. Low-energy supra-thermal particles emitted by magnetic reconnection are a source of ionization for circumstellar discs, influencing their chemical, thermal, and dynamical evolution. The aim of this work is to propose a first investigation to evaluate how energetic particles can propagate in the circumstellar disc of a T Tauri star and how they affect the ionization rate of the disc plasma. To that end, we have collected experimental and theoretical cross sections for the production of H+, H |$_2^+$|⁠ , and He+ by electrons and protons. Starting from theoretical injection spectra of protons and electrons emitted during magnetic reconnection events, we have calculated the propagated spectra in the circumstellar disc considering the relevant energy loss processes. We have considered fluxes of energetic particles with different spectral indices and different disc magnetic configurations, generated at different positions from the star considering the physical properties of the flares as deduced from the observations obtained by the Chandra Orion Ultra Deep point source catalogue. We have then computed the ionization rates for a disc whose structure has been calculated with the radiation thermo-chemical code prodimo. We find that energetic particles are potentially a very strong source of local ionization with ionization rates exceeding by several orders of magnitude the contribution due to X-rays, stellar energetic particles, and radioactivity in the inner disc. The Deeper, Wider, Faster (DWF) program coordinates observations with telescopes across the electromagnetic spectrum, searching for transients on time-scales of milliseconds to days. The tenth DWF observing run was carried out in near real-time during September 2021, and consisted of six consecutive days of observations of the NGC 6744 galaxy group and a field containing the repeating fast radio burst FRB 190711 with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder, the Dark Energy Camera, the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope, and the Parkes 64-m 'Murriyang' radio telescope. In this work, we present the results of an image-domain search for transient, variable, and circularly polarized sources carried out with ASKAP, using data from the observing run along with test observations prior to the run and follow-up observations carried out during and after the run. We identified eight variable radio sources, consisting of one pulsar, six stellar systems (five of which exhibit circularly polarized emission), and one previously uncatalogued source. Of particular interest is the detection of pulses from the ultra-cool dwarf SCR J1845–6357 with a period of 14.2 ± 0.3 h in good agreement with the known optical rotation period, making this the slowest rotating radio-loud ultra-cool dwarf discovered. A fireball of radiation plasma created near the surface of a neutron star (NS) expands under its own pressure along magnetic field lines, and produces photon emission and relativistic matter outflow. We comprehensively classify the expanding fireball evolution into five cases, and obtain the photospheric luminosity and the kinetic energy of the outflow, taking into account key processes; lateral diffusion of photons escaping from a magnetic flux tube, effects of strong magnetic field, baryon loading from the NS surface, and radiative acceleration via cyclotron resonant scattering, some of which have not been considered in the context of gamma-ray bursts. Applying our model to magnetar bursts with fast radio bursts (FRBs), in particular the X-ray short bursts from SGR 1935+2154 associated with the Galactic FRB 20200428A, we show that the burst radiation can accelerate the outflow to high-Lorentz factor with sufficient energy to power FRBs. The ultraviolet (UV) emission of stellar flares may have a pivotal role in the habitability of rocky exoplanets around low-mass stars. Previous studies have used white-light observations to calibrate empirical models which describe the optical and UV flare emission. However, the accuracy of the UV predictions of models has previously not been tested. We combined TESS optical and GALEX UV observations to test the UV predictions of empirical flare models calibrated using optical flare rates of M stars. We find that the canonical 9000-K black-body model used by flare studies underestimates the GALEX near-ultraviolet (NUV) energies of field age M stars by up to a factor of 6.5 ± 0.7 and the GALEX far-ultraviolet energies of fully convective field age M stars by 30.6 ± 10.0. We calculated energy correction factors that can be used to bring the UV predictions of flare models closer in line with observations. We calculated pseudo-continuum flare temperatures that describe both the white-light and GALEX NUV emission. We measured a temperature of 10 700 K for flares from fully convective M stars after accounting for the contribution from UV line emission. We also applied our correction factors to the results of previous studies of the role of flares in abiogenesis. Our results show that M stars do not need to be as active as previously thought in order to provide the NUV flux required for prebiotic chemistry, however, we note that flares will also provide more FUV flux than previously modelled. Stellar flares present challenges to the potential habitability of terrestrial planets orbiting M dwarf stars through inducing changes in the atmospheric composition and irradiating the planet's surface in large amounts of ultraviolet light. To examine their impact, we have coupled a general circulation model with a photochemical kinetics scheme to examine the response and changes of an Earth-like atmosphere to stellar flares and coronal mass ejections. We find that stellar flares increase the amount of ozone in the atmosphere by a factor of 20 compared to a quiescent star. We find that coronal mass ejections abiotically generate significant levels of potential bio-signatures such as N2O. The changes in atmospheric composition cause a moderate decrease in the amount of ultraviolet light that reaches the planets surface, suggesting that while flares are potentially harmful to life, the changes in the atmosphere due to a stellar flare act to reduce the impact of the next stellar flare. We present an in-depth study of a large and long duration (>1.3 d) X-ray flare observed on an RS CVn-type eclipsing binary system SZ Psc using observations from Swift observatory. In the 0.35–10 keV energy band, the peak luminosity is estimated to be 4.2 × 1033  |$\rm {erg}~\rm {s}^{-1}$|⁠. The quiescent corona of SZ Psc was observed ∼5.67 d after the flare using Swift observatory, and also ∼1.4 yr after the flare using the XMM–Newton satellite. The quiescent corona is found to consist of three temperature plasma: 4, 13, and 48 MK. High-resolution X-ray spectral analysis of the quiescent corona of SZ Psc suggests that the high first ionization potential (FIP) elements are more abundant than the low-FIP elements. The time-resolved X-ray spectroscopy of the flare shows a significant variation in the flare temperature, emission measure, and abundance. The peak values of temperature, emission measure, and abundances during the flare are estimated to be 199 ± 11 MK, 2.13 ± 0.05 ×  1056 cm−3, 0.66 ± 0.09  |$\rm {Z}_{\odot }$|⁠ , respectively. Using the hydrodynamic loop modelling, we derive the loop length of the flare as 6.3 ± 0.5 ×  1011 cm, whereas the loop pressure and density at the flare peak are derived to be 3.5 ± 0.7 ×  103 dyn cm−2 and 8 ± 2 ×  1010 cm−3, respectively. The total magnetic field to produce the flare is estimated to be 490 ± 60 G. The large magnetic field at the coronal height is supposed to be due to the presence of an extended convection zone of the subgiant and the high orbital velocity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the results of a coordinated campaign to simultaneously observe the M star binary Ross 733 in the optical and near-ultraviolet (NUV) with TESS and Swift, respectively. We observed two flares in the Swift NUV light curve. One of these was decay phase of a flare that was also detected with TESS and the other was only detected in the NUV. We used the TESS light curve to measure the white-light flare rate of Ross 733, and calculate that the system flares with an energy of 1033 erg once every 1.5 d. We used our simultaneous observations to measure a pseudo-continuum temperature of |$7340^{+810}_{-900}$|  K during the flare decay. We also used our observations to test the NUV predictions of the 9000 K blackbody flare model, and find that it underestimates number of flares we detect in our Swift NUV light curve. We discuss the reasons for this and attribute it to the unaccounted contributions from emission lines and continuum temperatures above 9000 K. We discuss how additional observations are required to break the degeneracy between the two in future multiwavelength flare campaigns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the relationship between Galactic location (R , Z) and photometric activity for 3.6 million M dwarf stars within 1 kpc of the Sun. For this purpose, we identify 906 unique flare events as a proxy for magnetic activity from the SkyMapper Southern Survey Data Release 3. We adopt vertical distance | Z | from the Galactic disc as a proxy for age and confirm a strong trend of flaring fraction decreasing with growing stellar age. Among M dwarfs within 50 pc of the Sun, we find a flaring fraction of one in 1500, independent of spectral type from M2 to M7, suggesting that these stars are all in a flare-saturated young evolutionary stage. We find a hint of a kink in the slope of the overall flare fraction near 100 pc from the plane, where a steep decline begins; this slope change is visible for mid-type M dwarfs (M3–M5), suggesting it is not an artefact of mixing spectral type. Together with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Hα emission, this trend is additional evidence that the activity fraction of M dwarfs depends on Galactic height and activity lifetime. While there is a hint of flattening of the overall activity fraction above | Z | ≈ 500 pc, our data do not constrain this further. Within ∼500 pc distance from the Sun, we find no sign of radial disc gradients in flare activity, which may only be revealed by samples covering a larger radial range. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using the ULTRASPEC instrument mounted on the 2.4-m Thai National Telescope , we observed two large flares, each with a total energy close to 1034 erg with sub-second cadence. A combination of a wavelet analysis, a Fourier transform plus an empirical mode decomposition, reveals quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs) that exhibit an apparent doubling of the oscillation period. Both events showed oscillations of a few minutes over a interval of several minutes, and despite the availability of sub-second cadence, there was no evidence of sub-minute oscillations. The doubling of the QPP periods and shorter lifetime of shorter-period QPP modes strongly favour resonant dynamics of magnetohydrodynamic waves in a coronal loop. We estimate loop lengths to be 0.2–0.7 R ⋆, in agreement with a typical length of solar coronal loops. From the Sun, we know that coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are a transient phenomenon, often correlated with flares. They have an impact on solar mass- and angular momentum loss, and therefore solar evolution, and make a significant part of space weather. The same is true for stars, but stellar CMEs are still not well constrained, although new methodologies have been established, and new detections presented in the recent past. So far, probable detections of stellar CMEs have been presented, but their physical parameters which are not directly accessible from observations, such as electron density, optical thickness, temperature, etc. have been so far not determined for the majority of known events. We apply cloud modeling, as commonly used on the Sun, to a known event from the literature, detected on the young dMe star V374 Peg. This event manifests itself in extra emission on the blue side of the Balmer lines. By determining the line source function from 1D NLTE modeling together with the cloud model formulation, we present distributions of physical parameters of this event. We find that except for temperature and area all parameters are at the upper range of typical solar prominence parameters. The temperature and the area of the event were found to be higher than for typical solar prominences observed in Balmer lines. We find more solutions for the filament than for the prominence geometry. Moreover, we show that filaments can appear in emission on dMe stars contrary to the solar case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe a new software package for simulating channelized, high-time resolution data streams from radio telescopes. The software simulates data from the telescope and observing system taking into account the observation strategy, receiver system, and digitization. The signatures of pulsars, fast radio bursts and flare stars are modelled, including frequency-dependent effects such as scattering and scintillation. We also simulate more generic signals using spline curves and images. Models of radio frequency interference include signals from satellites, terrestrial transmitters and impulsive, broad-band signals. The simulated signals can also be injected into real data sets. Uses of this software include the production of machine learning training data sets, development, and testing of new algorithms to search for anomalous patterns and to characterize processing pipelines. Planets that closely orbit magnetically active stars are thought to be able to interact with their magnetic fields in a way that modulates stellar activity. This modulation in phase with the planetary orbit, such as enhanced X-ray activity, chromospheric spots, radio emission, or flares, is considered the clearest sign of magnetic star–planet interaction (SPI). However, the magnitude of this interaction is poorly constrained, and the intermittent nature of the interaction is a challenge for observers. AU Mic is an early M dwarf, and the most actively flaring planet host detected to date. Its innermost companion, AU Mic b, is a promising target for magnetic SPI observations. We used optical light curves of AU Mic obtained by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite to search for signs of flaring SPI with AU Mic b using a customized Anderson–Darling test. In the about 50 d of observations, the flare distributions with orbital, rotational, and synodic periods were generally consistent with intrinsic stellar flaring. We found the strongest deviation (p  = 0.07,  n  = 71) from intrinsic flaring with the orbital period of AU Mic b, in the high-energy half of our sample (ED > 1 s). If it reflects the true SPI signal from AU Mic b, extending the observing time by a factor of 2–3 will yield a >3 σ detection. Continued monitoring of AU Mic may therefore reveal flaring SPI with orbital phase, while rotational modulation will smear out due to the star's strong differential rotation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on the detection of MKT J174641.0−321404, a new radio transient found in untargeted searches of wide-field MeerKAT radio images centred on the black hole X-ray binary H1743−322. MKT J174641.0−321404 is highly variable at 1.3 GHz and was detected three times during 11 observations of the field in late 2018, reaching a maximum flux density of 590 ± 60 µJy. We associate this radio transient with a high proper motion, M dwarf star SCR 1746−3214 12 pc away from the Sun. Multiwavelength observations of this M dwarf indicate flaring activity across the electromagnetic spectrum, consistent with emission expected from dMe stars, and providing upper limits on quiescent brightness in both the radio and X-ray regimes. TESS photometry reveals a rotational period for SCR 1746−3214 of 0.2292 ± 0.0025 d, which at its estimated radius makes the star a rapid rotator, comparable to other low-mass systems. Dedicated spectroscopic follow up confirms the star as a mid-late spectral M dwarf with clear magnetic activity indicated by strong H α emission. This transient's serendipitous discovery by MeerKAT, along with multiwavelength characterization, make it a prime demonstration of both the capabilities of the current generation of radio interferometers and the value of simultaneous observations by optical facilities such as MeerLICHT. We present a study of photometric flares on 154 low-mass (≤0.2 M⊙) objects observed by the SPECULOOS-South Observatory from 2018 June 1 to 2020 March 23. In this sample, we identify 85 flaring objects, ranging in spectral type from M4 to L0. We detect 234 flares in this sample, with energies between 1029.2 and 1032.7 erg, using both automated and manual methods. With this work, we present the largest photometric sample of flares on late-M and ultra-cool dwarfs to date. By extending previous M dwarf flare studies into the ultra-cool regime, we find M5–M7 stars are more likely to flare than both earlier, and later, M dwarfs. By performing artificial flare injection-recovery tests, we demonstrate that we can detect a significant proportion of flares down to an amplitude of 1 per cent, and we are most sensitive to flares on the coolest stars. Our results reveal an absence of high-energy flares on the reddest dwarfs. To probe the relations between rotation and activity for fully convective stars, we extract rotation periods for fast rotators and lower-bound period estimates of slow rotators. These rotation periods span from 2.2 h to 65 d, and we find that the proportion of flaring stars increases for the most fastest rotators. Finally, we discuss the impact of our flare sample on planets orbiting ultra-cool stars. As stars become cooler, they flare less frequently; therefore, it is unlikely that planets around the most reddest dwarfs would enter the 'abiogenesis' zone or drive visible-light photosynthesis through flares alone. We present the identifications of a flux-limited sample of highly variable X-ray sources on long time-scales from the second catalogue of the XMM–Newton SLew survey (XMMSL2). The carefully constructed sample, comprising 265 sources (2.5 per cent) selected from the XMMSL2 clean catalogue, displayed X-ray variability of a factor of more than 10 in 0.2–2 keV compared to the ROSAT All Sky Survey. Of the sample sources, 94.3 per cent are identified. The identification procedure follows a series of cross-matches with astronomical data bases and multiwavelength catalogues to refine the source position and identify counterparts to the X-ray sources. Assignment of source type utilizes a combination of indicators including counterparts offset, parallax measurement, spectral colours, X-ray luminosity, and light-curve behaviour. We identified 40 per cent of the variables with stars, 10 per cent with accreting binaries, and at least 30.4 per cent with active galactic nuclei. The rest of the variables are identified as galaxies. It is found that the mean effective temperatures of the highly variable stars are lower than those of less variable stars. Our sample of highly variable AGN tend to have lower black hole masses, redshifts, and marginally lower soft X-ray luminosities compared to the less variable ones, while no difference was found in the Eddington ratio distributions. Five flaring events are tidal disruption events published previously. This study has significantly increased the number of variable sources in XMMSL2 with identifications and provides greater insight on the nature of many o f the sources, enabling further studies of highly variable X-ray sources. V2487 Oph is a recurrent nova with detected eruptions in 1900 and 1998. Startlingly, V2487 Oph shows flares, called 'Superflares', with up to 1.10 mag amplitude, fast rises of under one-minute, always with an initial impulsive spike followed by a roughly exponential tail, typically one-hour durations, and with random event times averaging once-per-day. The typical flare energy E is over 1038 erg, while the yearly energy budget is 1041 erg. V2487 Oph Superflares obey three relations; the number distribution of flare energies scales as E −2.34 ± 0.35, the waiting time from one flare to the next is proportional to E of the first event, and flare durations scale as E 0.44 ± 0.03. Scenarios involving gravitational energy and nuclear energy fail to satisfy the three relations. The magnetic energy scenario, however, can explain all three relations. This scenario has magnetic field lines above the disc being twisted and amplified by the motions of their footprints, with magnetic reconnection releasing energy that comes out as Superflare light. This exact mechanism is already well known to occur in white light solar flares, in ordinary M-type flare stars, and in the many Superflare stars observed all across the H-R diagram. Superflares on Superflare stars have rise times, light-curve shapes, and durations that are very similar to those on V2487 Oph. So we conclude that the V2487 Oph Superflares are caused by large-scale magnetic reconnection. V2487 Oph is now the most extreme Superflare star, exhibiting the largest known flare energy (1.6 × 1039 erg) and the fastest occurrence rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stars which are rapidly rotating are expected to show high levels of activity according to the activity–rotation relation. However, previous TESS studies have found ultra fast rotating (UFR) M dwarfs with periods less than 1 d displaying low levels of flaring activity. As a result, in this study, we utilize VLT/FORS2 spectro-polarimetric data of 10 M dwarf UFR stars between spectral types ∼M2–M6 all with P rot < 1, to detect the presence of a magnetic field. We divide our sample into rotation period bins of equal size, with one star having many more flares in the TESS light curve than the other. We also provide an analysis of the long-term variability within our sample using TESS light curves taken during Cycles 1 and 3 (up to 3 yr apart). We identify 605 flares from our sample which have energies between 2.0 × 1031 and 5.4 × 1034 erg. Although we find no significant difference in the flare rate between the Cycles, two of our targets display changes in their light-curve morphology, potentially caused by a difference in the spot distribution. Overall, we find five stars (50 per cent) in our sample have a detectable magnetic field with strengths ∼1–2 kG. Of these five, four were the more flare active stars within the period bins with one being the less flare active star. It would appear the magnetic field strength may not be the answer to the lack of flaring activity and supersaturation or magnetic field configuration may play a role. We report the discovery of J0624–6948, a low-surface brightness radio ring, lying between the Galactic Plane and the large magellanic cloud (LMC). It was first detected at 888 MHz with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), and with a diameter of ∼196 arcsec. This source has phenomenological similarities to odd radio circles (ORCs). Significant differences to the known ORCs – a flatter radio spectral index, the lack of a prominent central galaxy as a possible host, and larger apparent size – suggest that J0624–6948 may be a different type of object. We argue that the most plausible explanation for J0624–6948 is an intergalactic supernova remnant due to a star that resided in the LMC outskirts that had undergone a single-degenerate type Ia supernova, and we are seeing its remnant expand into a rarefied, intergalactic environment. We also examine if a massive star or a white dwarf binary ejected from either galaxy could be the supernova progenitor. Finally, we consider several other hypotheses for the nature of the object, including the jets of an active galactic nucleus (30Dor) or the remnant of a nearby stellar super-flare.
