Reionization is thought to be driven by faint star-forming galaxies, but characterizing this population has long remained very challenging. Here, we utilize deep nine-band JADES (JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey)/NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) imaging to study the star-forming and ionizing properties of 756 |$z\sim 6-9$| galaxies, including hundreds of very ultraviolet (UV)-faint objects (⁠|$M_\mathrm{UV}\gt -18$|⁠). The faintest (⁠|$m\sim 30$|⁠) galaxies in our sample typically have stellar masses of |$M_\ast \sim (1-3)\times 10^7\ \mathrm{ M}_\odot$| and young light-weighted ages (⁠|$\sim$| 50 Myr), though some show strong Balmer breaks implying much older ages (⁠|$\sim$| 500 Myr). We find no evidence for extremely massive galaxies (⁠|$\gt 3\times 10^{10}\ \mathrm{ M}_\odot$|⁠) in our sample. We infer a strong (factor |$\gt $| 2) decline in the typical [O  iii ] |$+$| H  |$\beta$| equivalent widths (EWs) towards very faint |$z\sim 6-9$| galaxies, yet a weak UV luminosity dependence on the H  |$\alpha$| EWs at |$z\sim 6$|⁠. We demonstrate that these EW trends can be explained if fainter galaxies have systematically lower metallicities as well as more recently declining star formation histories relative to the most UV-luminous galaxies. Our data provide evidence that the brightest galaxies are frequently experiencing a recent strong upturn in star formation rate. We also discuss how the EW trends may be influenced by a strong correlation between |$M_\mathrm{UV}$| and Lyman continuum escape fraction. This alternative explanation has dramatically different implications for the contribution of galaxies along the luminosity function to cosmic reionization. Finally, we quantify the photometric overdensities around two |$z\,\gt\,7$| strong Ly  |$\alpha$| emitters. One Ly  |$\alpha$| emitter lies close to a strong photometric overdensity, while the other shows no significant nearby overdensity, perhaps implying that not all strong |$z\,\gt\, 7$| Ly  |$\alpha$| emitters reside in large ionized bubbles. JWST has recently sparked a new era of Lyα spectroscopy, delivering the first measurements of the Lyα escape fraction and velocity profile in typical galaxies at z ≃ 6−10. These observations offer new prospects for insight into the earliest stages of reionization. But to realize this potential, we need robust models of Lyα properties in galaxies at z ≃ 5−6 when the IGM is mostly ionized. Here, we use new JWST observations from the JADES and FRESCO surveys combined with VLT/MUSE and Keck/DEIMOS data to characterize statistical distributions of Lyα velocity offsets, escape fractions, and EWs in z ≃ 5−6 galaxies. We find that galaxies with large Lyα escape fractions (>0.2) are common at z ≃ 5−6, comprising 30 per cent of Lyman break selected samples. Comparing to literature studies, our census suggests that Lyα becomes more prevalent in the galaxy population towards higher redshift from z ∼ 3 to z ∼ 6, although we find that this evolution slows considerably between z ∼ 5 and z ∼ 6, consistent with modest attenuation from residual H i in the mostly ionized IGM at z ≃ 5−6. We find significant evolution in Lyα velocity profiles between z ≃ 2−3 and z ≃ 5−6, likely reflecting the influence of resonant scattering from residual intergalactic H i on the escape of Lyα emission near line centre. This effect will make it challenging to use Lyα peak offsets as a probe of Lyman continuum leakage at z ≃ 5−6. We use our z ≃ 5−6 Lyα distributions to make predictions for typical Lyα properties at z ≳ 8 and discuss implications of a recently discovered Lyα emitter at z ≃ 8.5 with a small peak velocity offset (156 km s−1). The power-law slope of the rest-ultraviolet (UV) continuum (f λ ∝ λβ) is a key metric of early star-forming galaxies, providing one of our only windows into the stellar populations and physical conditions of z ≳ 10 galaxies. Expanding upon previous studies with limited sample sizes, we leverage deep imaging from the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) to investigate the UV slopes of 179 z ≳ 9 galaxies with apparent magnitudes of m F 200 W ≃ 26–31, which display a median UV slope of β = −2.4. We compare to a statistical sample of z ≃ 5–9 galaxies, finding a shift towards bluer rest-UV colours at all |$M_{\rm UV}$|⁠. The most UV-luminous z ≳ 9 galaxies are significantly bluer than their lower redshift counterparts, representing a dearth of moderately red galaxies within the first 500 Myr. At yet earlier times, the z ≳ 11 galaxy population exhibits very blue UV slopes, implying very low impact from dust attenuation. We identify a robust sample of 44 galaxies with β ≲ −2.8, which have spectral energy distributions requiring models of density-bounded H  ii regions and median ionizing photon escape fractions of 0.51 to reproduce. Their rest-optical colours imply that this sample has weaker emission lines (median m F 356 W − m F 444 W  = 0.19 mag) than typical galaxies (median m F 356 W − m F 444 W  = 0.39 mag), consistent with the inferred escape fractions. This sample consists of relatively low stellar masses (median |$\log (M/{\rm M}_{\odot })=7.5\pm 0.2$|⁠), and specific star formation rates (sSFRs; median  |$=79 \, \rm Gyr^{-1}$|⁠) nearly twice that of our full galaxy sample (median sSFRs  |$=44 \, \rm Gyr^{-1}$|⁠), suggesting these objects are more common among systems experiencing a recent upturn in star formation. We demonstrate that the shutoff of star formation provides an alternative solution for modelling of extremely blue UV colours, making distinct predictions for the rest-optical emission of these galaxies. We describe new JWST /NIRSpec observations of galaxies at z ≳ 7 taken from the CEERS survey. Previous observations of this area have revealed associations of Lyα emitters at redshifts (z = 7.5, 7.7, and 8.7) where the intergalactic medium (IGM) is thought to be mostly neutral, leading to suggestions that these systems are situated in large ionized bubbles. We identify 21 z ≳ 7 galaxies with robust redshifts in the CEERS data set, including 10 in the Lyα associations. Their spectra are indicative of very highly ionized and metal poor gas, with line ratios (O32 = 17.84 and Ne3O2 = 0.89, linear scale) and metallicity (⁠|$12+\log {(\rm {O/H})}=7.84$|⁠) that are rarely seen at lower redshifts. We find that the most extreme spectral properties are found in the six z ≳ 7 Lyα emitters in the sample. Each has a hard ionizing spectrum indicating that their visibility is likely enhanced by efficient ionizing photon production. Lyα velocity offsets are found to be very large (≳300 km s−1), likely also contributing to their detectability. We find that Lyα in z ≳ 7 galaxies is 6–12 × weaker than in lower redshift samples with matched rest-optical spectral properties. If the bubbles around the Lyα emitters are relatively small (≲0.5–1 pMpc), we may expect such significant attenuation of Lyα in these ionized regions. We discuss several other effects that may contribute to weaker Lyα emission at z ≳ 7. Deep spectroscopy of fainter galaxies in the vicinity of the Lyα emitters will better characterize the physical scale of the ionized bubbles in this field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an interstellar medium and stellar population analysis of three spectroscopically confirmed z > 7 galaxies in the Early Release Observations JWST /NIRCam and JWST /NIRSpec data of the SMACS J0723.3−7327 cluster. We use the Bayesian spectral energy distribution-fitting code prospector with a flexible star formation history (SFH), a variable dust attenuation law, and a self-consistent model of nebular emission (continuum and emission lines). Importantly, we self-consistently fit both the emission line fluxes from JWST /NIRSpec and the broad-band photometry from JWST /NIRCam, taking into account slit-loss effects. We find that these three z =7.6–8.5 galaxies (M ⋆ ≈ 108 M⊙) are young with rising SFHs and mass-weighted ages of 3–4 Myr, though we find indications for underlying older stellar populations. The inferred gas-phase metallicities broadly agree with the direct metallicity estimates from the auroral lines. The galaxy with the lowest gas-phase metallicity (Z gas= 0.06 Z⊙) has a steeply rising SFH, is very compact (<0.2 kpc), and has a high star formation rate surface density (ΣSFR ≈ 22 M⊙ yr−1 kpc−2), consistent with rapid gas accretion. The two other objects with higher gas-phase metallicities show more complex multicomponent morphologies on kpc scales, indicating that their recent increase in star formation rate is driven by mergers or internal, gravitational instabilities. We discuss effects of assuming different SFH priors or only fitting the photometric data. We discuss the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) emission line spectra of a large (∼100) sample of low luminosity redshift z ∼ 3.1 Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) drawn from a Subaru imaging survey in the SSA22 survey field. Our earlier work based on smaller samples indicated that such sources have high [O iii]/[O ii] line ratios possibly arising from a hard ionizing spectrum that may be typical of similar sources in the reionization era. With optical spectra secured from VLT/VIMOS, we re-examine the nature of the ionizing radiation in a larger sample using the strength of the high ionization diagnostic emission lines of Ciii]λ1909, Civλ1549, Heiiλ1640, and O iii]λλ1661, 1666 Å in various stacked subsets. Our analysis confirms earlier suggestions of a correlation between the strength of Ly α and Ciii] emission and we find similar trends with broad-band UV luminosity and rest-frame UV colour. Using various diagnostic line ratios and our stellar photoionization models, we determine both the gas phase metallicity and hardness of the ionization spectrum characterized by ξion – the number of Lyman continuum photons per UV luminosity. We confirm our earlier suggestion that ξion is significantly larger for LAEs than for continuum-selected Lyman break galaxies, particularly for those LAEs with the faintest UV luminosities. We briefly discuss the implications for cosmic reionization if the metal-poor intensely star-forming systems studied here are representative examples of those at much higher redshift. We presentKeck/MOSFIRE observations of UV metal emission lines in four bright (H=23.9. 25.4) gravitationally lensed z ≃ 6-8 galaxies behind the cluster Abell 1703. The spectrum of A1703-zd6, a highly magnified star-forming galaxy with a Lyα redshift of z = 7.045, reveals a confident detection of the nebular CIV λ1548 emission line (unresolved with full width at halfmaximum< 125 km s-1). UV metal emission lines are not detected in the three other galaxies. At z ≃ 2.3, nebular CIV emission is observed in just 1 per cent of UV-selected galaxies. The presence of strong C IV emission in one of the small sample of galaxies targeted in this paper may indicate that hard ionizing spectra are more common at z ≃ 7. The total estimated rest-frame equivalent width of the CIV doublet and CIV/Lyƒα flux ratio are comparable to measurements of narrow-lined AGNs. Photoionization models show that the nebular C IV line can also be reproduced by a young stellar population, with very hot metal-poor stars dominating the photon flux responsible for triply ionizing carbon. Regardless of the origin of the CIV, we show that the ionizing spectrum of A1703-zd6 is different from that of typical galaxies at z2, producing more H ionizing photons per unit 1500 Å luminosity (log(Eion/erg-1 Hz) = 25.68) and a larger flux density at 30.50 eV. If such extreme radiation fields are typical in UV-selected systems at z ≳ 7, it would indicate that reionization-era galaxies are more efficient ionizing agents than previously thought. Alternatively, we suggest that the small sample of Lyα emitters at z ≳ 7 may trace a rare population with intense radiation fields capable of ionizing their surrounding hydrogen distribution. Additional constraints on high-ionization emission lines in galaxies with and without Lyα detections will help clarify whether hard ionizing spectra are common in the reionization era.
