We describe catalogue-level simulations of Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) light curves in the Dark Energy Survey Supernova Program (DES-SN) and in low-redshift samples from the Center for Astrophysics (CfA) and the Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP). These simulations are used to model biases from selection effects and light-curve analysis and to determine bias corrections for SN Ia distance moduli that are used to measure cosmological parameters. To generate realistic light curves, the simulation uses a detailed SN Ia model, incorporates information from observations (point spread function, sky noise, zero-point), and uses summary information (e.g. detection efficiency versus signal-to-noise ratio) based on 10 000 fake SN light curves whose fluxes were overlaid on images and processed with our analysis pipelines. The quality of the simulation is illustrated by predicting distributions observed in the data. Averaging within redshift bins, we find distance modulus biases up to 0.05 mag over the redshift ranges of the low-z and DES-SN samples. For individual events, particularly those with extreme red or blue colour, distance biases can reach 0.4 mag. Therefore, accurately determining bias corrections is critical for precision measurements of cosmological parameters. The primary goals of the STRong lensing Insights into the Dark Energy Survey (STRIDES) collaboration are to measure the dark energy equation of state parameter and the free streaming length of dark matter. To this aim, STRIDES is discovering strongly lensed quasars in the imaging data of the Dark Energy Survey and following them up to measure time delays, high resolution imaging, and spectroscopy sufficient to construct accurate lens models. In this paper, we first present forecasts for STRIDES. Then, we describe the STRIDES classification scheme, and give an overview of the Fall 2016 follow-up campaign. We continue by detailing the results of two selection methods, the outlier selection technique and a morphological algorithm, and presenting lens models of a system that could possibly be a lensed quasar in an unusual configuration. We conclude with the summary statistics of the Fall 2016 campaign. Including searches presented in companion papers (Anguita et al.; Ostrovski et al.), STRIDES followed up 117 targets identifying 7 new strongly lensed systems, and 7 nearly identical quasars, which could be confirmed as lenses by the detection of the lens galaxy. 76 candidates were rejected and 27 remain otherwise inconclusive, for a success rate in the range of 6-35 per cent. This rate is comparable to that of previous searches like SDSS Quasar Lens Search even though the parent data set of STRIDES is purely photometric and our selection of candidates cannot rely on spectroscopic information.

We present results for the first three years of OzDES, a six year programme to obtain redshifts for objects in the Dark Energy Survey (DES) supernova fields using the 2dF fibre positioner and AAOmega spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. OzDES is a multi-object spectroscopic survey targeting multiple types of targets at multiple epochs over a multiyear baseline and is one of the first multi-object spectroscopic surveys to dynamically include transients into the target list soon after their discovery. At the end of three years, OzDES has spectroscopically confirmed almost 100 supernovae, and has measured redshifts for 17 000 objects, including the redshifts of 2566 supernova hosts. We examine how our ability to measure redshifts for targets of various types depends on signal-to-noise ratio (S/N), magnitude and exposure time, finding that our redshift success rate increases significantly at a S/N of 2-3 per 1-Å bin. We also find that the change in S/N with exposure time closely matches the Poisson limit for stacked exposures as long as 10 h. We use these results to predict the redshift yield of the full OzDES survey, as well as the potential yields of future surveys on other facilities such as (i.e. the 4-m Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope, the Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph and the Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer). This work marks the first OzDES data release, comprising 14 693 redshifts. OzDES is on target to obtain over 30 000 redshifts over the 6-yr duration of the survey, including a yield of approximately 5700 supernova host-galaxy redshifts.

We present a deep X-Shooter rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) to optical spectral analysis of the heavily reddened quasar, ULASJ2315+0143 at |$z=2.566$|⁠ , known to reside in a major-merger host galaxy. The rest-frame optical is best fit by a dust-reddened quasar (E (B – V) |$^{\rm QSO}= 1.55$|⁠) with black-hole mass |$\rm log_{10}(H\beta , M{\small BH} [{\rm M}_{\odot }]) = 10.26 \pm 0.05$|⁠ , bolometric luminosity |$\rm L_{Bol}$|  = |$\rm 10^{48.16}\, erg\,\,s^{-1}$| and Eddington-scaled accretion rate log |$_{10}(\rm \lambda _{Edd}) = -0.19$|⁠. We find remarkable similarities between ULASJ2315+0143 and the high-redshift little red dots (LRDs). The rest-frame UV cannot be explained by a dusty quasar component alone and requires an additional blue component consistent with either a star-forming host galaxy or scattered AGN light. We detect broad high-ionization emission lines in the rest-UV, supporting the scattered light interpretation for the UV excess. The scattering fraction represents just 0.05  per cent of the total luminosity of ULASJ2315+0143 . Analysis of the mid-infrared SED suggests an absence of hot dust on torus-scales similar to what is observed for LRDs. The obscuring medium is therefore likely on galaxy scales. We detect narrow, blueshifted associated absorption-line systems in C  iv , N  v , Si  iv , and Si  iii. There is evidence for significant high-velocity (>1000  |$\rm km\, s^{-1}$|⁠) outflows in both the broad- and narrow-line regions as traced by C  iv and [O  iii ] emission. The kinetic power of the [O  iii ] wind is |$\dot{\epsilon }_{k}^{ion} = 10^{44.61} \rm erg\, s^{-1} \sim 0.001\, L_{Bol}$|⁠. ULASJ2315+0143 is likely in an important transition phase where star formation, black-hole accretion and multiphase gas flows are simultaneously occurring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We introduce redMaGiC, an automated algorithm for selecting luminous red galaxies (LRGs). The algorithm was specifically developed to minimize photometric redshift uncertainties in photometric large-scale structure studies. redMaGiC achieves this by self-training the colour cuts necessary to produce a luminosity-thresholded LRG sample of constant comoving density. We demonstrate that redMaGiC photo-zs are very nearly as accurate as the best machine learning-based methods, yet they require minimal spectroscopic training, do not suffer from extrapolation biases, and are very nearly Gaussian. We apply our algorithm to Dark Energy Survey (DES) Science Verification (SV) data to produce a redMaGiC catalogue sampling the redshift range z ∈ [0.2, 0.8]. Our fiducial sample has a comoving space density of 10-3 (h-1 Mpc)-3, and a median photo-z bias (zspec - zphoto) and scatter (σz/(1 + z)) of 0.005 and 0.017, respectively. The corresponding 5σ outlier fraction is 1.4 per cent. We also test our algorithm with Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 8 and Stripe 82 data, and discuss how spectroscopic training can be used to control photo-z biases at the 0.1 per cent level.

This overview paper describes the legacy prospect and discovery potential of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) beyond cosmological studies, illustrating it with examples from the DES early data. DES is using a wide-field camera (DECam) on the 4 m Blanco Telescope in Chile to image 5000 sq deg of the sky in five filters (grizY). By its completion, the survey is expected to have generated a catalogue of 300 million galaxies with photometric redshifts and 100 million stars. In addition, a time-domain survey search over 27 sq deg is expected to yield a sample of thousands of Type Ia supernovae and other transients. The main goals of DES are to characterize dark energy and dark matter, and to test alternative models of gravity; these goals will be pursued by studying large-scale structure, cluster counts, weak gravitational lensing and Type Ia supernovae. However, DES also provides a rich data set which allows us to study many other aspects of astrophysics. In this paper, we focus on additional science with DES, emphasizing areas where the survey makes a difference with respect to other current surveys. The paper illustrates, using early data (from 'Science Verification', and from the first, second and third seasons of observations), what DES can tell us about the Solar system, the Milky Way, galaxy evolution, quasars and other topics. In addition, we show that if the cosmological model is assumed to be Λ+cold dark matter, then important astrophysics can be deduced from the primary DES probes. Highlights from DES early data include the discovery of 34 trans-Neptunian objects, 17 dwarf satellites of the Milky Way, one published z > 6 quasar (and more confirmed) and two published superluminous supernovae (and more confirmed).

We study the clustering of galaxies detected at i < 22.5 in the Science Verification observations of the Dark Energy Survey (DES). Two-point correlation functions are measured using 2.3×106 galaxies over a contiguous 116 deg2 region in five bins of photometric redshift width Δz = 0.2 in the range 0.2 < z < 1.2. The impact of photometric redshift errors is assessed by comparing results using a template-based photo-z algorithm (BPZ) to a machine-learning algorithm (TPZ). A companion paper presents maps of several observational variables (e.g. seeing, sky brightness) which could modulate the galaxy density. Here we characterize and mitigate systematic errors on the measured clustering which arise from these observational variables, in addition to others such as Galactic dust and stellar contamination. After correcting for systematic effects, we measure galaxy bias over a broad range of linear scales relative to mass clustering predicted from the Planck Λ cold dark matter model, finding agreement with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) measurements with χ2 of 4.0 (8.7) with 5 degrees of freedom for the TPZ (BPZ) redshifts. We test a 'linear bias' model, in which the galaxy clustering is a fixed multiple of the predicted non-linear dark matter clustering. The precision of the data allows us to determine that the linear bias model describes the observed galaxy clustering to 2.5 per cent accuracy down to scales at least 4-10 times smaller than those on which linear theory is expected to be sufficient.

We present spectroscopic confirmation of two new lensed quasars via dataobtained at the 6.5m Magellan/Baade Telescope. The lens candidates have beenselected from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and WISE based on their multi-bandphotometry and extended morphology in DES images. Images of DES J0115-5244 showtwo blue point sources at either side of a red galaxy. Our long-slit dataconfirm that both point sources are images of the same quasar at $z_{s}=1.64.$The Einstein Radius estimated from the DES images is $0.51$". DES J2200+0110 isin the area of overlap between DES and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Twoblue components are visible in the DES and SDSS images. The SDSS fiber spectrumshows a quasar component at $z_{s}=2.38$ and absorption compatible with Mg IIand Fe II at $z_{l}=0.799$, which we tentatively associate with the foregroundlens galaxy. The long-slit Magellan spectra show that the blue components areresolved images of the same quasar. The Einstein Radius is $0.68$"corresponding to an enclosed mass of $1.6\times10^{11}\,M_{\odot}.$ Three othercandidates were observed and rejected, two being low-redshift pairs ofstarburst galaxies, and one being a quasar behind a blue star. These firstconfirmation results provide an important empirical validation of thedata-mining and model-based selection that is being applied to the entire DESdataset.

We present DES13S2cmm, the first spectroscopically-confirmed superluminous supernova (SLSN) from the Dark Energy Survey (DES).We briefly discuss the data and search algorithm used to find this event in the first year of DES operations, and outline the spectroscopic data obtained from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Very Large Telescope to confirm its redshift (z = 0.663 ± 0.001 based on the host-galaxy emission lines) and likely spectral type (Type I). Using this redshift, we find M peakU = -21.05+0.10-0.09 for the peak, rest-frame U-band absolute magnitude, and find DES13S2cmm to be located in a faint, low-metallicity (subsolar), low stellar-mass host galaxy (log (M/M⊙) = 9.3 ± 0.3), consistent with what is seen for other SLSNe-I. We compare the bolometric light curve of DES13S2cmm to 14 similarly well-observed SLSNe-I in the literature and find that it possesses one of the slowest declining tails (beyond +30 d rest-frame past peak), and is the faintest at peak. Moreover, we find the bolometric light curves of all SLSNe-I studied herein possess a dispersion of only 0.2-0.3 mag between +25 and +30 d after peak (rest frame) depending on redshift range studied; this could be important for 'standardizing' such supernovae, as is done with the more common Type Ia. We fit the bolometric light curve of DES13S2cmm with two competing models for SLSNe-I - the radioactive decay of 56Ni, and a magnetar - and find that while the magnetar is formally a better fit, neither model provides a compelling match to the data. Although we are unable to conclusively differentiate between these two physical models for this particular SLSN-I, further DES observations of more SLSNe-I should break this degeneracy, especially if the light curves of SLSNe-I can be observed beyond 100 d in the rest frame of the supernova.

Understanding the links between different phases of outflows from active galactic nuclei is a key goal in extragalactic astrophysics. Here, we compare [O  iii ]  |$\lambda \lambda$| 4960, 5008 outflow signatures in quasars with and without broad absorption lines (BALs), aiming to test how the broad absorption troughs seen in the rest-frame ultraviolet are linked to the narrow line region outflows seen in the rest-frame optical. We present new near-infrared spectra from Magellan/FIRE that cover [O  iii ] in 12 quasars with |$2.1\lt z\lt 2.3$|⁠ , selected to have strong outflow signatures in C  iv |$\lambda$| 1550. Combining with data from the literature, we build a sample of 73 BAL, 115 miniBAL, and 125 non-BAL quasars with |$1.5\lt z\lt 2.6$|⁠. The strength and velocity width of [O  iii ] correlate strongly with the C  iv emission properties, but no significant difference is seen in the [O  iii ] emission-line properties between the BALs, non-BALs, and miniBALs once the dependence on C  iv emission is taken into account. A weak correlation is observed between the velocities of C  iv BALs and [O  iii ] emission, which is accounted for by the fact that both outflow signatures correlate with the underlying C  iv emission properties. Our results add to the growing evidence that BALs and non-BALs are drawn from the same parent population and are consistent with a scenario wherein BAL troughs are intermittent tracers of persistent quasar outflows, with a part of such outflow becoming optically thick along our line of sight for sporadic periods of time within which BALs are observed. We perform spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting to 711 luminous X-ray AGN at 0.7 < z < 4.5 using 10-bands of optical and infra-red photometric data for objects within XMM-SERVS. This fitting provided 510 reliable (reduced χ2 < 3) inferences on AGN and host galaxy properties. The AGN optical (3000 Å) luminosity inferred from SED-fitting is found to correlate with the measured X-ray (2–10 keV) luminosity, in good agreement with previous work. Using X-ray hardness as a proxy for AGN obscuration, we also study the differences in the host galaxy properties of obscured and unobscured AGNs. Both populations have consistent stellar masses (log10(M */ M ⊙)  = 10.88 |$\pm 0.09\, {\rm M}_\odot$| and log10(M */ M ⊙)  = 10.8 |$\pm 0.1\, {\rm M}_\odot$| for unobscured and obscured AGNs, respectively). We also find evidence for varying AGN emission line properties from a standard AGN template in 18.8 per cent of the sample with a reduced χ2 < 3 where the inclusion of an additional emission line strength free parameter was found to improve the quality of the fit. Comparison of these fits to SDSS spectra showed that emission line properties inferred from broad-band photometry were consistent with the results from spectroscopy for 91 per cent of objects. We find that the presence of weaker, more blueshifted emission lines as inferred from the SED fits are associated with more negative values of αox. While the correlation between the hardness of the ionizing SED and the emission line properties has been known for some time, we are able to derive this correlation purely from broad-band photometry. Using data from SDSS, UKIDSS, and WISE , we investigate the properties of the high-frequency cutoff to the infrared emission in ≃5000 carefully selected luminous (L bol ∼ 1047) type 1 quasars. The strength of ≃2  μ m emission, corresponding to emission from the hottest (⁠|$T\gt 1200\rm \, K$|⁠) dust in the sublimation zone surrounding the central continuum source, is observed to correlate with the blueshift of the C  iv λ1550 emission line. We therefore find that objects with stronger signatures of nuclear outflows tend to have a larger covering fraction of sublimation-temperature dust. When controlling for the observed outflow strength, the hot dust covering fraction does not vary significantly across our sample as a function of luminosity, black hole mass, or Eddington fraction. The correlation between the hot dust and the C  iv line blueshifts, together with the lack of correlation between the hot dust and other parameters, therefore provides evidence of a link between the properties of the broad emission line region and the infrared-emitting dusty regions in quasars.
