XTE J1701−462 is a neutron star low-mass X-ray binary (NS LMXB) discovered in 2006 as the first system to demonstrate unambiguously that the 'Atoll' and 'Z' classes of accreting neutron stars are separated by accretion rate. Radio observations during the 2006/7 outburst provided evidence for the formation of a relativistic jet, as now expected for all accreting neutron star and black hole X-ray binaries at high-accretion rates. The source entered a new outburst in 2022, and we report 29 observations made with the MeerKAT radio telescope. The first radio detection was on the 16th September 2022, we continued detecting the source until mid-December 2022. Thereafter, establishing radio upper limits till 25 March 2023. We present the radio analysis alongside analysis of contemporaneous X-ray observations from MAXI. The radio light curve shows evidence for at least three flare-like events over the first hundred days, the most luminous of which has an associated minimum energy of |$1\times 10^{38}$|  erg. We provide a detailed comparison with the 2006/7 outburst, and demonstrate that we detected radio emission from the source for considerably longer in the more recent outburst, although this is probably a function of sampling. We further constrain the radio emission from the source to have a polarization of less than 9 per cent at the time of 2022 IXPE detection of X-ray polarization. Finally, we place the source in the radio–X-ray plane, demonstrating that when detected in radio it sits in a comparable region of parameter space to the other Z-sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe an X-ray source detection method entirely based on the maximum likelihood analysis, in application to observations with the ART-XC telescope onboard the Spectrum Roentgen Gamma observatory. The method optimally combines the data taken at different conditions, a situation commonly found in scanning surveys or mosaic observations with a telescope with a significant off-axis PSF distortion. The method can be naturally extended to include additional information from the X-ray photon energies, detector grades, etc. The likelihood-based source detection naturally results in an optimal use of available information for the sources detection and stable and uniform definition of detection thresholds under different observing conditions (PSF, background level). This greatly simplifies the statistical calibration of the survey needed to, e.g. obtain the |$\log N - \log S$| distribution of detected sources or their luminosity function. In this work, we use 8 years of deep near-infrared imaging to select and study a new set of 601 active galaxies identified through long-term near-infrared (NIR) variability in the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS). These objects are compared to 710 X-ray bright Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) detected by the Chandra X-ray observatory. We show that infrared variability and X-ray emission select distinct sets of active galaxies, finding only a 37 per cent overlap of galaxies detected by both techniques and confirming NIR-variable AGN to be typically X-ray quiet. Examining the mass functions of the active galaxies shows that NIR variability detects AGN activity in galaxies over a significantly wider range of host stellar mass compared to X-ray detection. For example, at z ∼ 1, variable AGN are identified among approximately 1 per cent of galaxies in a roughly flat distribution above the stellar mass completeness limit (⁠|$\gt 10^{9}\rm \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠), while X-ray detection primarily identifies AGN in galaxies of higher mass (⁠|$\gt 10^{10}\rm \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠). We report on the SRG /eROSITA detection of ultra-soft (⁠|$kT=47^{+5}_{-5}$|  eV) X-ray emission (L X = |$2.5^{+0.6}_{-0.5} \times 10^{43}$|  erg s−1) from the tidal disruption event (TDE) candidate AT 2022dsb ∼14 d before peak optical brightness. As the optical luminosity increases after the eROSITA detection, then the 0.2–2 keV observed flux decays, decreasing by a factor of ∼39 over the 19 d after the initial X-ray detection. Multi-epoch optical spectroscopic follow-up observations reveal transient broad Balmer emission lines and a broad He  ii 4686 Å emission complex with respect to the pre-outburst spectrum. Despite the early drop in the observed X-ray flux, the He  ii 4686  Å complex is still detected for ∼40 d after the optical peak, suggesting the persistence of an obscured hard ionizing source in the system. Three outflow signatures are also detected at early times: (i) blueshifted H α emission lines in a pre-peak optical spectrum, (ii) transient radio emission, and (iii) blueshifted Ly α absorption lines. The joint evolution of this early-time X-ray emission, the He  ii 4686 Å complex, and these outflow signatures suggests that the X-ray emitting disc (formed promptly in this TDE) is still present after optical peak, but may have been enshrouded by optically thick debris, leading to the X-ray faintness in the months after the disruption. If the observed early-time properties in this TDE are not unique to this system, then other TDEs may also be X-ray bright at early times and become X-ray faint upon being veiled by debris launched shortly after the onset of circularization. We report the first detection of evolving low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillation (LFQPO) frequencies in hard X-rays upto 100 keV with AstroSat/ LAXPC during 'unusual' outburst phase of Swift J1727.8−1613 in hard intermediate state (HIMS). The observed LFQPO in 20–100 keV has a centroid |$\nu _{_{\rm QPO}}=1.43$| Hz, a coherence factor Q  = 7.14 and an amplitude |${\rm rms_{_{\rm QPO}}} = 10.95{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| with significance σ = 5.46. Type-C QPOs (1.09–2.6 Hz) are found to evolve monotonically during HIMS of the outburst with clear detection in hard X-rays (80−100 keV), where |${\rm rms_{_{\rm QPO}}}$| decreases (⁠|$\sim 12\!-\!3{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) with energy. Further, |$\nu _{_{\rm QPO}}$| is seen to correlate (anticorrelate) with low- (high-) energy flux in 2–20 keV (15–50 keV). Wide-band (0.7−40 keV) energy spectrum of NICER/ XTI and AstroSat/ LAXPC is satisfactorily described by the 'dominant' thermal Comptonization contribution (∼88 per cent) in presence of a 'weak' signature of disc emissions (kT in ∼ 0.36 keV) indicating the harder spectral distribution. Considering source mass |$M_{\rm BH}=10\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$| and distance 1.5 < d (kpc) < 5, the unabsorbed bolometric luminosity is estimated as |$\sim 0.03\!-\!0.92{{\ \rm per\ cent}}\, L_{\rm Edd}$|⁠. The Snake is a remarkable Galactic Centre radio filament with a morphology characterized by two kinks along its ∼20 arcmin extent. The major and minor kinks are located where the filament is most distorted from a linear magnetized structure running perpendicular to the Galactic plane. We present Chandra , VLA, and MeerKAT data and report the detection of an X-ray and radio source at the location of the major kink. High-resolution radio images of the major kink reveal a compact source with a steep spectrum with spectral index α ∼ −2.7 surrounded by extended emission. The radio luminosity and steep spectrum of the compact source are consistent with a pulsar. We also show flattening of the spectrum and enhanced synchrotron emissivity away from the position of the major kink along the Snake, which suggests injection of relativistic particles along the Snake. We argue that the major kink is created by a fast-moving (∼500–1000 km s−1) object punching into the Snake, distorting its magnetic structure, and producing X-ray emission. X-ray emission pinpoints an active acceleration site where the interaction is taking place. The automatic classification of X-ray detections is a necessary step in extracting astrophysical information from compiled catalogues of astrophysical sources. Classification is useful for the study of individual objects, statistics for population studies, as well as for anomaly detection, that is, the identification of new unexplored phenomena, including transients and spectrally extreme sources. Despite the importance of this task, classification remains challenging in X-ray astronomy due to the lack of optical counterparts and representative training sets. We develop an alternative methodology that employs an unsupervised machine learning approach to provide probabilistic classes to Chandra Source Catalog sources with a limited number of labelled sources, and without ancillary information from optical and infrared catalogues. We provide a catalogue of probabilistic classes for 8756 sources, comprising a total of 14 507 detections, and demonstrate the success of the method at identifying emission from young stellar objects, as well as distinguishing between small- and large-scale compact accretors with a significant level of confidence. We investigate the consistency between the distribution of features among classified objects and well-established astrophysical hypotheses such as the unified active galactic nucleus model. This provides interpretability to the probabilistic classifier. Code and tables are available publicly through GitHub. Hyperluminous infrared galaxies (HyLIRGs) are the most extreme star-forming systems observed in the early Universe, and their properties still elude comprehensive understanding. We have undertaken a large XMM – Newton observing programme to probe the total accreting black hole population in three HyLIRGs at z = 2.12, 3.25, and 3.55, gravitationally lensed by foreground galaxies. Selected from the Planck All-Sky Survey to Analyse Gravitationally lensed Extreme Starbursts (PASSAGES), these HyLIRGs have apparent infrared luminosities >1014 L⊙. Our observations revealed X-ray emission in each of them. PJ1336+49 appears to be dominated by high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs). Remarkably, the luminosity of this non-AGN X-ray emission exceeds by a factor of about 3 the value obtained by calibration with local galaxies with much lower star formation rates. This enhanced X-ray emission most likely highlights the efficacy of dynamical HMXB production within compact clusters, which is an important mode of star formation in HyLIRGs. The remaining two (PJ0116−24 and PJ1053+60) morphologically and spectrally exhibit a compact X-ray component in addition to the extended non-AGN X-ray emission, indicating the presence of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). The AGN appears to be centrally located in the reconstructed source plane images of PJ0116−24, which manifests its star-forming activity predominantly within an extended galactic disc. In contrast, the AGN in the field of PJ1053+60 is projected 60 kpc away from the extreme star-forming galaxy and could be ejected from it. These results underline the synergistic potential of deep X-ray observations with strong lensing for the study of high-energy astrophysical phenomena in HyLIRGs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on IXPE, NICER, and XMM–Newton observations of the magnetar 1E 2259+586. We find that the source is significantly polarized at about or above 20  per cent for all phases except for the secondary peak where it is more weakly polarized. The polarization degree is strongest during the primary minimum which is also the phase where an absorption feature has been identified previously. The polarization angle of the photons are consistent with a rotating vector model with a mode switch between the primary minimum and the rest of the rotation of the neutron star. We propose a scenario in which the emission at the source is weakly polarized (as in a condensed surface) and, as the radiation passes through a plasma arch, resonant cyclotron scattering off of protons produces the observed polarized radiation. The study of jet-inflated X-ray cavities provides a powerful insight into the energetics of hot galactic atmospheres and radio-mechanical AGN feedback. By estimating the volumes of X-ray cavities, the total energy and thus also the corresponding mechanical jet power required for their inflation can be derived. Properly estimating their total extent is, however, non-trivial, prone to biases, nearly impossible for poor-quality data, and so far has been done manually by scientists. We present a novel machine-learning pipeline called Cavity Detection Tool (CADET), developed as an assistive tool that detects and estimates the sizes of X-ray cavities from raw Chandra images. The pipeline consists of a convolutional neural network trained for producing pixel-wise cavity predictions and a DBSCAN clustering algorithm, which decomposes the predictions into individual cavities. The convolutional network was trained using mock observations of early-type galaxies simulated to resemble real noisy Chandra -like images. The network's performance has been tested on simulated data obtaining an average cavity volume error of 14 per cent at an 89 per cent true-positive rate. For simulated images without any X-ray cavities inserted, we obtain a 5 per cent false-positive rate. When applied to real Chandra images, the pipeline recovered 93 out of 97 previously known X-ray cavities in nearby early-type galaxies and all 14 cavities in chosen galaxy clusters. Besides that, the CADET pipeline discovered seven new cavity pairs in atmospheres of early-type galaxies (IC 4765, NGC 533, NGC 2300, NGC 3091, NGC 4073, NGC 4125, and NGC 5129) and a number of potential cavity candidates. The recent serendipitous discovery of a new population of short duration X-ray transients, thought to be associated with collisions of compact objects or stellar explosions in distant galaxies, has motivated efforts to build up statistical samples by mining X-ray telescope archives. Most searches to date, however, do not fully exploit recent developments in the signal and imaging processing research domains to optimize searches for short X-ray flashes. This paper addresses this issue by presenting a new source detection pipeline, STATiX (Space and Time Algorithm for Transients in X-rays), which directly operates on three-dimensional X-ray data cubes consisting of two spatial and one temporal dimension. The algorithm leverages wavelet transforms and the principles of sparsity to denoise X-ray observations and then detect source candidates on the denoised data cubes. The light curves of the detected sources are then characterized using the Bayesian blocks algorithm to identify flaring periods. We describe the implementation of STATiX in the case of XMM–Newton data, present extensive validation and performance verification tests based on simulations and also apply the pipeline to a small subset of seven XMM–Newton observations, which are known to contain transients sources. In addition to known flares in the selected fields, we report a previously unknown short duration transient found by our algorithm that is likely associated with a flaring Galactic star. The paper presents the analysis of optically selected GAMA groups and clusters in the SRG/eROSITA X-ray map of eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey, in the halo mass range 1013−5 × 1014 M⊙ and at z < 0.2. All X-ray detections have a clear GAMA counterpart, but most of the GAMA groups in the halo mass range 1013−1014 M⊙ remain undetected. We compare the X-ray surface brightness profiles of the eROSITA detected groups with the mean stacked profile of the undetected low-mass haloes at fixed halo mass. Overall, we find that the undetected groups exhibit less concentrated X-ray surface brightness, dark matter, and galaxy distributions with respect to the X-ray-detected haloes. The mean gas mass fraction profiles are consistent in the two samples within 1.5σ, indicating that the gas follows the dark matter profile. The low-mass concentration and the magnitude gap indicate that these systems are young. They reside with a higher probability in filaments while X-ray-detected groups favour the nodes of the Cosmic Web. Because of the lower central emission, the undetected systems tend to be X-ray underluminous at fixed halo mass and to lie below the LX − M halo relation. Interestingly, the X-ray-detected systems inhabiting the nodes scatter the less around the relation, while those in filaments tend to lie below it. We do not observe any strong relationship between the system X-ray appearance and the active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity. We cannot exclude the role of the past AGN feedback in affecting the gas distribution over the halo lifetime. In this paper, we performed a spectro-polarimetric analysis of the transient NS-LMXB XTE J1701−462 using IXPE, NICER , and NuSTAR data during its 2022 outburst. We report significant detection of energy-dependent polarization in the X-ray signal from the source on 2022 September 29 in the 2–4, 4–8, and 2–8 keV energy bands with a polarization degree of 3.9 ± 0.3, 5.5 ± 0.6, and 4.5 ± 0.4 per cent, respectively. The polarization angle in the overall 2–8 keV band was ∼143° ± 2°. The spectra were modelled using a combination of thermal emission from an accretion disc, Comptonized emission from a hot electron plasma (or corona) and a Gaussian line. From spectro-polarimetric analysis, the polarization degree due to the disc emission had an upper limit of ∼11.5 per cent, and that of the Comptonized emission was constrained at 7.7 ± 2.5 per cent (at the 3σ level). The results suggest that the Comptonized component probably originates from a spreading-layer/boundary-layer above the neutron star surface. IXPE observation of the source on 2022 October 8 does not show significant polarization which can be attributed to a weakening of the coronal Comptonized emission. A complete demographic of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is essential to understand the evolution of the Universe. Optical surveys estimate the population of AGNs in the local Universe to be of ∼ 4 per cent. However, these results could be biased towards bright sources, not affected by the host galaxy attenuation. An alternative method for detecting these objects is through the X-ray emission. In this work, we aim to complement the AGN population of the optical CALIFA survey (941 sources), by using X-ray data from Chandra , which provides the best spatial resolution to date, essential to isolate the nuclear emission from the host galaxy. We study a total of 138 sources with available data. We find 34 new bona fide AGNs and 23 AGN candidates, which could increase the AGN population to 7–10  per cent among the CALIFA survey. X-rays are particularly useful for low-luminosity AGNs since they are excluded by the criterion of large equivalent width of the |$\rm {H\alpha }$| emission line when applied to optical selections. Indeed, placing such a restrictive criteria might cause a loss of up to 70 per cent of AGN sources. X-ray detected sources are preferentially located in the right side of the [ |${\mathrm{O}}\, {\small {\rm III}}$| ]/Hβ versus [ |${\mathrm{N}}\, {\small {\rm II}}$| ]/Hα diagram, suggesting that this diagram might be the most reliable at classifying AGN sources. We present observations from X-ray to mid-infrared wavelengths of the most energetic non-quasar transient ever observed, AT2021lwx. Our data show a single optical brightening by a factor >100 to a luminosity of 7 × 1045 erg s−1 and a total radiated energy of 1.5 × 1053 erg, both greater than any known optical transient. The decline is smooth and exponential and the ultraviolet–optical spectral energy distribution resembles a blackbody with a temperature of 1.2 × 104 K. Tentative X-ray detections indicate a secondary mode of emission, while a delayed mid-infrared flare points to the presence of dust surrounding the transient. The spectra are similar to recently discovered optical flares in known active galactic nuclei but lack some characteristic features. The lack of emission for the previous 7 yr is inconsistent with the short-term, stochastic variability observed in quasars, while the extreme luminosity and long time-scale of the transient disfavour the disruption of a single solar-mass star. The luminosity could be generated by the disruption of a much more massive star, but the likelihood of such an event occurring is small. A plausible scenario is the accretion of a giant molecular cloud by a dormant black hole of 108–109 solar masses. Detached eclipsing binaries are the primary tool used to measure precise masses and radii of stars. In our previous paper estimating the parameters of more than 30 000 detached eclipsing binaries, we identified 766 eclipsing binaries with additional features in their All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite light curves. Here, we characterize these 'extra-physics' systems, identifying eclipsing binaries with spotted stars, pulsating components, and candidate triple/quadruple systems. We use the Gaia , Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS), Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), and ASAS-SN variable star catalogues to search for possible blends. We use MIST (MESA Isochrones and Stellar Tracks) isochrones and evolutionary tracks to identify systems with main-sequence, subgiant, and giant primaries and highlight systems in sparsely populated regions of the colour–magnitude diagram. We find that the orbital period distribution of spotted binaries is divided by evolutionary state and find 68 with X-ray detections. For the candidate triple/quadruples and pulsating systems, we calculate the extra orbital/pulsational period and identify systems with resonances. Finally, we highlight a number of exotic systems, including eclipsing cataclysmic variables, subdwarfs, and binaries with discs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a study of optically selected dual Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with projected separations of 3–97 kpc. Using multiwavelength (MWL) information (optical, X-ray, mid-IR), we characterized the intrinsic nuclear properties of this sample and compared them with those of isolated systems. Among the 124 X-ray-detected AGN candidates, 52 appear in pairs and 72 as single X-ray sources. Through MWL analysis, we confirmed the presence of the AGN in >80 per cent of the detected targets in pairs (42 out of 52). X-ray spectral analysis confirms the trend of increasing AGN luminosity with decreasing separation, suggesting that mergers may have contributed to triggering more luminous AGN. Through X-ray/mid-IR ratio versus X-ray colours, we estimated a fraction of Compton-thin AGN (with 1022 cm−2 < N H < 1024 cm−2) of about 80 per cent, while about 16 per cent are Compton-thick sources (with N H > 1024 cm−2). These fractions of obscured sources are larger than those found in samples of isolated AGN, confirming that pairs of AGN show higher obscuration. This trend is further confirmed by comparing the de-reddened [O  iii ] emission with the observed X-ray luminosity. However, the derived fraction of Compton-thick sources in this sample at the early stages of merging is lower than that reported for late-merging dual-AGN samples. Comparing N H from X-rays with that derived from E (B − V) from narrow-line regions, we found that the absorbing material is likely to be associated with the torus or broad-line regions. We also explored the X-ray detection efficiency of dual-AGN candidates, finding that, when observed properly (at on-axis positions and with long exposures), X-ray data represent a powerful way to confirm and investigate dual-AGN systems. We present multiwavelength observations of supernova (SN) 2017hcc with the Chandra X-ray telescope and the X-ray telescope onboard Swift (Swift-XRT) in X-ray bands, with the Spitzer and the TripleSpec spectrometer in near-infrared (IR) and mid-IR bands and with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) for radio bands. The X-ray observations cover a period of 29 to 1310 d, with the first X-ray detection on day 727 with the Chandra. The SN was subsequently detected in the VLA radio bands from day 1000 onwards. While the radio data are sparse, synchrotron-self absorption is clearly ruled out as the radio absorption mechanism. The near- and the mid-IR observations showed that late time IR emission dominates the spectral energy distribution. The early properties of SN 2017hcc are consistent with shock breakout into a dense mass-loss region, with |$\dot{M} \sim 0.1$| M⊙ yr−1 for a decade. At few 100 d, the mass-loss rate declined to ∼0.02 M⊙ yr−1, as determined from the dominant IR luminosity. In addition, radio data also allowed us to calculate a mass-loss rate at around day 1000, which is two orders of magnitude smaller than the mass-loss rate estimates around the bolometric peak. These values indicate that the SN progenitor underwent an enhanced mass-loss event a decade before the explosion. The high ratio of IR to X-ray luminosity is not expected in simple models and is possible evidence for an asymmetric circumstellar region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we present the X-ray analysis of Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR8 redMaPPer (SDSSRM) clusters using data products from the XMM Cluster Survey (XCS). In total, 1189 SDSSRM clusters fall within the XMM – Newton footprint. This has yielded 456 confirmed detections accompanied by X-ray luminosity (LX) measurements. Of these clusters, 381 have an associated X-ray temperature measurement (TX). This represents one of the largest samples of coherently derived cluster TX values to date. Our analysis of the X-ray observable to richness scaling relations has demonstrated that scatter in the TX –λ relation is roughly a third of that in the LX –λ relation, and that the LX –λ scatter is intrinsic, i.e. will not be significantly reduced with larger sample sizes. Analysis of the scaling relation between LX and TX has shown that the fits are sensitive to the selection method of the sample, i.e. whether the sample is made up of clusters detected 'serendipitously' compared to those deliberately targeted by XMM. These differences are also seen in the LX –λ relation and, to a lesser extent, in the TX –λ relation. Exclusion of the emission from the cluster core does not make a significant impact on the findings. A combination of selection biases is a likely, but yet unproven, reason for these differences. Finally, we have also used our data to probe recent claims of anisotropy in the LX – TX relation across the sky. We find no evidence of anistropy, but stress this may be masked in our analysis by the incomplete declination coverage of the SDSS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

XMM–Newton observations of the middle-aged radio-quiet γ-ray pulsar J0554+3107 allowed us, for the first time, firmly identify it in X-rays by detection of pulsations with the pulsar period. In the 0.2–2 keV band, the pulse profile shows two peaks separated by about a half of the rotation phase with the pulsed fraction of 25 ± 6 per cent. The profile and spectrum in this band can be mainly described by thermal emission from the neutron star with the hydrogen atmosphere, dipole magnetic field of ∼1013 G, and non-uniform surface temperature. Non-thermal emission from the pulsar magnetosphere is marginally detected at higher photon energies. The spectral fit with the atmosphere+power-law model implies that J0554+3107 is a rather heavy and cool neutron star with the mass of 1.6–2.1 M⊙, the radius of ≈13 km, and the redshifted effective temperature of ≈50 eV. The spectrum shows an absorption line of unknown nature at ≈350 eV. Given the extinction–distance relation, the pulsar is located at ≈2 kpc and has the redshifted bolometric thermal luminosity of ≈2 × 1032 erg s−1. We discuss cooling scenarios for J0554+3107 considering plausible equations of state of superdense matter inside the star, different compositions of the heat-blanketing envelope, and various ages. Short rise times of fast blue optical transients (FBOTs) require very light ejected envelopes, |$M_{\rm ej} \le 10^{-1} \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$|⁠ , much smaller than of a typical supernova. The detection by Chandra of X-ray emission in AT2020mrf of L X ∼ 1042 erg s−1 after 328 d implies total, overall dominant, X-ray energetics at the gamma-ray burst level of ∼6 × 1049 erg. We further develop a model of Lyutikov and Toonen, whereby FBOTs are the results of a late accretion-induced collapse of the product of double white dwarf (WD) merger between ONeMg WD and another WD. Small ejecta mass, and the rarity of FBOTs, results from the competition between mass-loss from the merger product to the wind, and ashes added to the core, on a time-scale of ∼103–104 yr. FBOTs proper come from central engine-powered radiation-dominated forward shock as it propagates through ejecta. All the photons produced by the central source deep inside the ejecta escape almost simultaneously, producing a short bright event. The high-energy emission is generated at the highly relativistic and highly magnetized termination shock, qualitatively similar to pulsar wind nebulae. The X-ray bump observed in AT2020mrf by SRG /eROSITA, predicted by Lyutikov and Toonen, is coming from the breakout of the engine-powered shock from the ejecta into the preceding wind. We present the results of a radio observing campaign on GRB 201216C, combined with publicly available optical and X-ray data. The detection of very high energy (VHE, >100 GeV) emission by MAGIC makes this the fifth VHE GRB at the time of publication. Comparison between the optical and X-ray light curves show that GRB 201216C is a dark GRB, i.e. the optical emission is significantly absorbed and is fainter than expected from the X-ray detections. Our e -MERLIN data also shows evidence of diffractive interstellar scintillation. We can study the column density along the line of sight to the GRB in both the host galaxy, from the damped optical light curve, and the Milky Way, via scintillation studies. We find that the afterglow is best modelled using a jet-cocoon geometry within a stellar wind environment. Fitting the data with a multicomponent model, we estimate that the optical, X-ray, and higher frequency radio data before ∼25 d originates from an ultrarelativistic jet with an isotropic equivalent kinetic energy of (0.6–10) × 1052 erg and an opening angle of ∼1–9°. The lower frequency radio emission detected by MeerKAT, from day 28 onwards, is produced by the cocoon with a kinetic energy that is between two and seven orders of magnitude lower (0.02–50) × 1048 erg. We examine Chandra observations of the powerful Fanaroff–Riley class II (FR II) radio galaxy Cygnus A for an X-ray counterpart to the radio transient Cygnus A-2 that was first detected in 2011. Observations are performed using the High-Resolution Camera (HRC) instrument in order to spatially resolve Cygnus A-2 and the central active galactic nucleus (AGN) at a separation of  0.′′42. Simulated images are generated of the emission region, and radial profiles for the region of interest are extracted. A comparison between the simulations and observations reveals no X-ray detection of Cygnus A-2 to a 0.5–7.0 keV flux upper limit of |$1.04 \times 10^{-12}\rm \, erg\, cm^{-2}\, s^{-1}$|⁠ , or a rest-frame 2–10 keV luminosity of |$8.6\times 10^{42}\rm \, erg\, s^{-1}$|⁠. We estimate the black hole mass of Cygnus A-2 based on our X-ray flux limit and find it to be consistent with a flaring black hole rather than a steadily accreting source. The HRC observations are additionally compared with archival Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) data from 2016 to 2017, and both the overall morphology and the flux limits of the AGN complex agree between the two data sets. This consistency is despite the pile-up effect in ACIS which was previously considered to bias the observed morphology of the AGN. The agreement between the data sets demonstrates the viability of utilizing the archival Chandra data of Cygnus A to analyse its AGN at an unprecedented level of precision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reionization-era galaxies often display intense nebular emission lines, both in rest-frame optical ([O  iii ] + H β) and ultraviolet (UV; C  iii ], C  iv). How such strong nebular emission is powered remains unclear, with both active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and hot stars considered equally viable. The UV continuum slopes of these early systems tend to be very blue (β < −2), reflecting minimal dust obscuration, young ages, and low metallicities. This contrasts with narrow-lined AGNs at |$z$| ∼ 2−3, whose UV slopes are significantly redder (β > −1) than typical star-forming systems in the reionization era. To investigate the properties of AGNs in the reionization era, we have conducted a search for potential examples of rare analogues with blue continua at intermediate redshift (⁠|$z$| ∼ 2−3). Our goals are to determine whether AGNs with intense line emission and blue continua exist and thereby to establish the range of rest-frame UV and optical line ratios in this population. In this paper, we report the detection of an X-ray luminous AGN at |$z$|  = 3.21 (UDS-24561) with extreme [O  iii ] + H β line emission (equivalent width = 1300 Å) and a blue UV continuum slope (β = −2.34). MMT/Binospec and Keck/MOSFIRE spectra indicate rest-frame UV line ratios consistent with AGN photoionization models and rest-frame optical lines with both a narrow component [full width at half-maximum (FWHM) |$=154\, {\rm km\, s}^{-1}$| ] and extended broad wings (FWHM |$=977\, {\rm km\, s}^{-1}$|⁠), consistent with outflowing gas. We describe how such objects can be identified in future James Webb Space Telescope emission line surveys in the reionization era, thereby providing a valuable census of AGN activity at |$z$| > 6 and understanding their contribution to cosmic reionization. Neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) are hypothesised to emit continuous gravitational waves that may be detectable by ground-based observatories. The torque balance model predicts that a higher accretion rate produces larger-amplitude gravitational waves, hence LMXBs with high X-ray flux are promising targets for gravitational wave searches. The detection of X-ray pulsations would identify the spin frequency of these neutron stars, and thereby improve the sensitivity of continuous gravitational-wave searches by reducing the volume of the search parameter space. We perform a semi-coherent search for pulsations in the two LMXBs Scorpius X-1 (Sco X-1) and Cygnus X-2 (Cyg X-2) using X-ray data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array. We find no clear evidence for pulsations, and obtain upper limits (at 90 per cent confidence) on the fractional pulse amplitude, with the most stringent being 0.034 per cent for Sco X-1 and 0.23 per cent for Cyg X-2. High-redshift sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs) are usually assumed to be powered by star formation. However, it has been clear for some time that >20 per cent of such sourcesbrighter than ≈3 mJy host quasars. Here, we analyse a complete sample of 12 sub-mm LABOCA/ALMA 870-μm sources in the centre of the William Herschel Deep Field (WHDF) with multiwavelength data available from the X-ray to the radio bands. Previously, two sources were identified as X-ray-absorbed quasars at z = 1.32 and z = 2.12. By comparing their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with unabsorbed quasars in the same field, we confirm that they are dust reddened although at a level significantly lower than implied by their X-ray absorption. Then, we compare the SEDs of all the sources to dust-reddened AGN and star-forming galaxy models. This optical/NIR comparison combined with Spitzer MIR colours and faint Chandra X-ray detections shows that 7/12 SMGs are best fitted with an obscured quasar model, a further 3/12 show no preference between AGN and star-forming templates, leaving only a z = 0.046 spiral galaxy and one unidentified source. So in our complete sample, the majority (10/12) of bright SMGs are at least as likely to fit an AGN as a star-forming galaxy template, although no claim is made to rule out the latter as SMG power sources. We then suggest modifications to a previous SMG number count model and conclude that obscured AGN in SMGs may still provide the dominant contribution to both the hard X-ray and sub-millimetre backgrounds. Quiescent black hole X-ray binaries (X-ray luminosities |${\lesssim} 10^{34}\,{\rm erg}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$|⁠) are believed to be fed by hot accretion flows that launch compact, relativistic jets. However, due to their low luminosities, quiescent jets have been detected in the radio waveband from only five systems so far. Here, we present radio observations of two quiescent black hole X-ray binaries with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. One system, GS 1124-684, was not detected. The other system, BW Cir, was detected over two different epochs in 2018 and 2020, for which we also obtained quasi-simultaneous X-ray detections with Chandra and Swift. BW Cir is now the sixth quiescent X-ray binary with a confirmed radio jet. However, the distance to BW Cir is uncertain, and we find that BW Cir shows different behaviour in the radio/X-ray luminosity plane depending on the correct distance. Estimates based on its G-type subgiant donor star place BW Cir at >25 kpc, while initial optical astrometric measurements from Gaia Data Release 2 suggested likely distances of just a few kpc. Here, we use the most recent measurements from Gaia Early Data Release 3 and find a distance |$d=7.1^{+4.8}_{-3.9}$| kpc and a potential kick velocity PKV = |$165^{+81}_{-17}$|  km s−1, with distances up to ≈20 kpc possible based on its parallax and proper motion. Even though there is now less tension between the parallax and donor-star based distance measurements, it remains an unresolved matter, and we conclude with suggestions on how to reconcile the two measurements. Galaxy mergers are predicted to trigger accretion on to the central supermassive black holes, with the highest rates occurring during final coalescence. Previously, we have shown elevated rates of both optical and mid-IR selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in post-mergers, but to date the prevalence of X-ray AGNs has not been examined in the same systematic way. We present XMM–Newton data of 43 post-merger galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey along with 430 non-interacting control galaxies matched in stellar mass, redshift, and environment in order to test for an excess of hard X-ray (2–10 keV) emission in post-mergers attributable to triggered AGNs. We find two X-ray detections in the post-mergers (⁠|$4.7^{+9.3}_{-3.8}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) and nine in the controls (⁠|$2.1^{+1.5}_{-1.0}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠), an excess of |$2.22^{+4.44}_{-2.22}$|⁠ , where the confidence intervals are 90 per cent. While, we therefore do not find statistically significant evidence for an X-ray AGN excess in post-mergers (p  = 0.26), we find a factor of ∼17 excess of mid-IR AGNs in our sample, consistent with the past work and inconsistent with the observed X-ray excess (p  = 2.7 × 10−4). Dominant, luminous AGNs are therefore more frequent in post-mergers, and the lack of a comparable excess of 2–10 keV X-ray AGNs suggests that AGNs in post-mergers are more likely to be heavily obscured. Our results are consistent with the post-merger stage being characterized by enhanced AGN fueling, heavy AGN obscuration, and more intrinsically luminous AGN, in line with theoretical predictions. X-ray transients, such as accreting neutron stars, periodically undergo outbursts, thought to be caused by a thermal-viscous instability in the accretion disc. Usually outbursts of accreting neutron stars are identified when the accretion disc has undergone an instability, and the persistent X-ray flux has risen to a threshold detectable by all sky monitors on X-ray space observatories. Here, we present the earliest known combined optical, UV, and X-ray monitoring observations of the outburst onset of an accreting neutron star low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) system. We observed a significant, continuing increase in the optical i ′-band magnitude starting on July 25, 12 d before the first X-ray detection with Swift /XRT and NICER (August 6), during the onset of the 2019 outburst of SAX J1808.4−3658. We also observed a 4 d optical to X-ray rise delay, and a 2 d UV to X-ray delay, at the onset of the outburst. We present the multiwavelength observations that were obtained, discussing the theory of outbursts in X-ray transients, including the disc instability model, and the implications of the delay. This work is an important confirmation of the delay in optical to X-ray emission during the onset of outbursts in LMXBs, which has only previously been measured with less sensitive all sky monitors. We use the EAGLE (Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments) cosmological simulation to study the distribution of baryons, and far-ultraviolet (O  vi), extreme-ultraviolet (Ne  viii), and X-ray (O  vii , O  viii , Ne  ix , and Fe  xvii) line absorbers, around galaxies and haloes of mass |$\,{M}_{\rm {200c}}= 10^{11}$| – |$10^{14.5} \, \rm {M}_{\odot}$| at redshift 0.1. EAGLE predicts that the circumgalactic medium (CGM) contains more metals than the interstellar medium across halo masses. The ions we study here trace the warm-hot, volume-filling phase of the CGM, but are biased towards temperatures corresponding to the collisional ionization peak for each ion, and towards high metallicities. Gas well within the virial radius is mostly collisionally ionized, but around and beyond this radius, and for O  vi , photoionization becomes significant. When presenting observables, we work with column densities, but quantify their relation with equivalent widths by analysing virtual spectra. Virial-temperature collisional ionization equilibrium ion fractions are good predictors of column density trends with halo mass, but underestimate the diversity of ions in haloes. Halo gas dominates the highest column density absorption for X-ray lines, but lower density gas contributes to strong UV absorption lines from O  vi and Ne  viii. Of the O  vii (O  viii) absorbers detectable in an Athena X-IFU blind survey, we find that 41 (56) per cent arise from haloes with |$\,{M}_{\rm {200c}}= 10^{12.0}{-}10^{13.5} \, \rm {M}_{\odot}$|⁠. We predict that the X-IFU will detect O  vii (O  viii) in 77 (46) per cent of the sightlines passing |$\,{M}_{\star }= 10^{10.5}{-}10^{11.0} \, \rm {M}_{\odot}$| galaxies within |$100 \, \rm {pkpc}$| (59 (82) per cent for |$\,{M}_{\star }\gt 10^{11.0} \, \rm {M}_{\odot}$|⁠). The low-mass star GJ 1151 has been reported to display variable low-frequency radio emission, which has been interpreted as a signpost of coronal star–planet interactions with an unseen exoplanet. Here we report the first X-ray detection of GJ 1151's corona based on the XMM–Newton data. We find that the star displays a small flare during the X-ray observation. Averaged over the observation, we detect the star with a low coronal temperature of 1.6 MK and an X-ray luminosity of L X = 5.5 × 1026 erg s−1. During the quiescent time periods excluding the flare, the star remains undetected with an upper limit of |$L_{\mathrm{ X},\, \mathrm{ qui}} \le 3.7\times 10^{26}$|  erg s−1. This is compatible with the coronal assumptions used in a recently published model for a star–planet interaction origin of the observed radio signals from this star. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present new X-ray observations of luminous heavily dust-reddened quasars (HRQs) selected from infrared (IR) sky surveys. HRQs appear to be a dominant population at high redshifts and the highest luminosities, and may be associated with a transitional 'blowout' phase of black hole and galaxy co-evolution models. Despite this, their high-energy properties have been poorly known. We use the overall sample of 10 objects with XMM–Newton coverage to study the high-energy properties of HRQs at $\langle$ Lbol $\rangle$  =1047.5 erg s−1 and $\langle$ z $\rangle$  =2.5. For seven sources with strong X-ray detections, we perform spectral analyses. These find a median X-ray luminosity of $\left\langle L_{\rm 2\!-\!10\, keV} \right\rangle = 10^{45.1}$  erg s−1, comparable to the most powerful X-ray quasars known. The gas column densities are NH = (1–8) × 1022 cm−2, in agreement with the amount of dust extinction observed. The dust-to-gas ratios are sub-Galactic, but are higher than found in local AGN. The intrinsic X-ray luminosities of HRQs are weak compared to the mid-IR ($L_{\rm 6\, \mu m}$) and bolometric luminosities (Lbol), in agreement with findings for other luminous quasar samples. For instance, the X-ray to bolometric corrections range from κbol ≈ 50 to 3000. The moderate absorption levels and accretion rates close to the Eddington limit ($\langle$ λEdd $\rangle$  =1.06) are in agreement with a quasar blowout phase. Indeed, we find that the HRQs lie in the forbidden region of the NH–λEdd plane, and therefore that radiation pressure feedback on the dusty interstellar medium may be driving a phase of blowout that has been ongoing for a few 105 yr. The Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS-S) camera on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory has been used to discover a hot bubble in the planetary nebula (PN) IC 4593, the most distant PN detected by Chandra so far. The data are used to study the distribution of the X-ray-emitting gas in IC 4593 and to estimate its physical properties. The hot bubble has a radius of ∼2 arcsec and is found to be confined inside the optically bright innermost cavity of IC 4593. The X-ray emission is mostly consistent with that of an optically thin plasma with temperature kT ≈ 0.15 keV (or T X ≈ 1.7 × 106 K), electron density n e ≈ 15 cm−3, and intrinsic X-ray luminosity in the 0.3–1.5 keV energy range L X = 3.4 × 1030 erg s−1. A careful analysis of the distribution of hard (E >0.8 keV) photons in IC 4593 suggests the presence of X-ray emission from a point source likely associated with its central star (CSPN). If this was the case, its estimated X-ray luminosity would be L X, CSPN = 7 × 1029 erg s−1, fulfilling the log(L X, CSPN/ L bol) ≈ −7 relation for self-shocking winds in hot stars. The X-ray detection of the CSPN helps explain the presence of high-ionization species detected in the ultraviolet spectra as predicted by stellar atmosphere models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We model the X-ray surface brightness distribution of emission associated with Fanaroff & Riley type-II radio galaxies. Our approach builds on the RAiSE dynamical model which describes broad-band radio frequency synchrotron evolution of jet-inflated lobes in a wide range of environments. The X-ray version of the model presented here includes: (1) inverse-Compton upscattering of cosmic microwave background radiation; (2) the dynamics of the shocked gas shell and associated bremsstrahlung radiation; and (3) emission from the surrounding ambient medium. We construct X-ray surface brightness maps for a mock catalogue of extended FR-IIs based on the technical characteristics of the eRosita telescope. The integrated X-ray luminosity function at low redshifts (z ≤ 1) is found to strongly correlate with the density of the ambient medium in all but the most energetic sources, whilst at high-redshift (z > 1) the majority of objects are dominated by inverse-Compton lobe emission due to the stronger cosmic microwave background radiation. By inspecting our mock spatial brightness distributions, we conclude that any extended X-ray detection can be attributed to AGN activity at redshifts z ≥ 1. We compare the expected detection rates of active and remnant high-redshift radio AGNs for eRosita and LOFAR , and future more sensitive surveys. We find that a factor of ten more remnants can be detected using X-ray wavelengths over radio frequencies at z > 2.2, increasing to a factor of 100 for redshifts z > 3.1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the context of time domain astronomy, we present an offline detection search of gamma-ray transients using a wild binary segmentation analysis called F-WBSB targeting both short and long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and covering the soft and hard gamma-ray bands. We use NASA Fermi /GBM archival data as a training and testing data set. This paper describes the analysis applied to the 12 NaI detectors of the Fermi /GBM instrument. This includes background removal, change-point detection that brackets the peaks of gamma-ray flares, the evaluation of significance for each individual GBM detector, and the combination of the results among the detectors. We also explain the calibration of the ∼ 10 parameters present in the method using one week of archival data. Finally, we present our detection performance result for 60 d of a blind search analysis with F-WBSB by comparing to both the onboard and offline GBM search as well as external events found by others surveys such as Swift -BAT. We detect 42/44 onboard GBM events but also other gamma-ray flares at a rate of 1 per hour in the 4–50 keV band. Our results show that F-WBSB is capable of recovering gamma-ray flares, including the detection of soft X-ray long transients. FWBSB offers an independent identification of GRBs in combination with methods for determining spectral and temporal properties of the transient as well as localization. This is particularly useful for increasing the GRB rate and that will help the joint detection with gravitational-wave events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the last years, a peculiarity of some Be stars – their association with unusually hard and intense X-ray emission – was shown to extend beyond a mere few cases. In this paper, we continue our search for new cases by performing a limited survey of 18 Be stars using XMM–Newton. The targets were selected either on the basis of a previous X-ray detection (exosat,rosat , XMM -slew survey) without spectral information available or because of the presence of a peculiar spectral variability. Only two targets remain undetected in the new observations and three other stars display only faint and soft X-rays. Short-term and/or long-term variations were found in one third of the sample. The spectral characterization of the X-ray brightest 13 stars of the sample led to the discovery of three new γ Cas (HD 44458, HD 45995, and V558 Lyr), bringing the total to 25 known cases, and another γ Cas candidate (HD 120678), bringing the total to two. The goal of this work is to study the obscuration properties of mid-infrared (mid-IR)-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN). For that purpose, we use Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) sources in the Stripe 82– XMM area to identify mid-IR AGN candidates, applying the Assef et al. criteria. Stripe 82 has optical photometry ≈2 times deeper than any single-epoch Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) region. XMM–Newton observations cover ∼26 deg2. Applying the aforementioned criteria, 1946 IR AGN are selected. |${\sim} 78{{\, \rm per\, cent}}$| have SDSS detection, while 1/3 of them are detected in X-rays, at a flux limit of |$\rm {\sim} 5 \times 10^{-15}\, erg\, s^{-1}\, cm^{-2}$|⁠. Our final sample consists of 507 IR AGN with X-ray detection and optical spectra. Applying a |$r-W2 > 6$| colour criterion, we find that the fraction of optically red AGN drop from 43 per cent for those sources with SDSS detection to |$23{{\, \rm per\, cent}}$| for sources that also have X-ray detection. X-ray spectral fitting reveals 40 (⁠|${\sim} 8{{\, \rm per\, cent}}$|⁠) X-ray absorbed AGN (⁠|$N_\mathrm{ H} > 10^{22}\,{\rm cm}^{-2}$|⁠). Among the X-ray unabsorbed AGN, there are 70 red systems. To further investigate the absorption of these sources, we construct spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for the total IR AGN sample. SED fitting reveals that |${\sim} 20{{\, \rm per\, cent}}$| of the optically red sources have such colours because the galaxy emission is a primary component in the optical part of the SED, even though the AGN emission is not absorbed at these wavelengths. SED fitting also confirms that |$12{{\, \rm per\, cent}}$| of the X-ray unabsorbed IR AGN are optically obscured. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose an anomaly detection technique for high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy. The method is based on the neural network architecture variational auto-encoder, and requires only normal samples for training. We implement the network using python taking account of the effect of Poisson statistics carefully, and demonstrate the concept with simulated high-resolution X-ray spectral data sets of one-temperature, two-temperature, and non-equilibrium plasma. Our proposed technique would assist scientists in finding important information that would otherwise be missed due to the unmanageable amount of data taken with future X-ray observatories. We investigate 60Fe in massive stars and core-collapse supernovae focussing on uncertainties that influence its production in 15, 20, and 25 M |$\odot$|  stars at solar metallicity. We find that the 60Fe yield is a monotonic increasing function of the uncertain 59Fe(n, γ)60Fe cross-section and that a factor of 10 reduction in the reaction rate results in a factor of 8–10 reduction in the 60Fe yield, while a factor of 10 increase in the rate increases the yield by a factor of 4–7. We find that none of the 189 simulations we have performed are consistent with a core-collapse supernova triggering the formation of the Solar system, and that only models using 59Fe(n, γ)60Fe cross-section that is less than or equal to that from NON-SMOKER can reproduce the observed 60Fe/26Al line flux ratio in the diffuse interstellar medium. We examine the prospects of detecting old core-collapse supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Milky Way from their gamma-ray emission from the decay of 60Fe, finding that the next generation of gamma-ray missions could be able to discover up to ∼100 such old SNRs as well as measure the 60Fe yields of a handful of known Galactic SNRs. We also predict the X-ray spectrum that is produced by atomic transitions in 60Co following its ionization by internal conversion and give theoretical X-ray line fluxes as a function of remnant age as well as the Doppler and fine-structure line broadening effects. We analyse the intracluster medium (ICM) and circumgalactic medium (CGM) in seven X-ray-detected galaxy clusters using spectra of background quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) (HSTCOS/ STIS), optical spectroscopy of the cluster galaxies (MMT/Hectospec and SDSS), and X-ray imaging/spectroscopy (XMM-Newton and Chandra). First, we report a very low covering fraction of HI absorption in the CGM of these cluster galaxies, fc = 25+25 -15 per cent, to stringent detection limits (N(H I) <1013 cm-2). As field galaxies have an HI covering fraction of ~100 per cent at similar radii, the dearth of CGM HI in our data indicates that the cluster environment has effectively stripped or overionized the gaseous haloes of these cluster galaxies. Secondly, we assess the contribution of warm-hot (105-106 K) gas to the ICM as traced by OVI and broad Ly α (BLA) absorption. Despite the high signal-to-noise ratio of our data, we do not detect OVI in any cluster, and we only detect BLA features in the QSO spectrum probing one cluster. We estimate that the total column density of warm-hot gas along this line of sight totals to ~3 per cent of that contained in the hot T > 107 K X-ray emitting phase. Residing at high relative velocities, these features may trace pre-shocked material outside the cluster. Comparing gaseous galaxy haloes from the low-density 'field' to galaxy groups and high-density clusters, we find that the CGM is progressively depleted of HI with increasing environmental density, and the CGM is most severely transformed in galaxy clusters. We reinvestigate a claimed sample of 22 X-ray detected active galactic nuclei (AGN) at redshifts z > 4, which has reignited the debate as to whether young galaxies or AGN reionized the Universe. These sources lie within the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey- South (GOODS-S)/Cosmic Assembly Near-Infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) field, and we examine both the robustness of the claimed X-ray detections (within the Chandra 4Ms imaging) and perform an independent analysis of the photometric redshifts of the optical/infrared counterparts. We confirm the reality of only 15 of the 22 reported X-ray detections, and moreover find that only 12 of the 22 optical/infrared counterpart galaxies actually lie robustly at z > 4. Combining these results we find convincing evidence for only seven X-ray AGN at z > 4 in the GOODS-S field, of which only one lies at z > 5. We recalculate the evolving far-ultraviolet (1500 Å) luminosity density produced by AGN at high redshift, and find that it declines rapidly from z ≃ 4 to z ≃ 6, in agreement with several other recent studies of the evolving AGN luminosity function. The associated rapid decline in inferred hydrogen ionizing emissivity contributed by AGN falls an order-of-magnitude short of the level required to maintain hydrogen ionization at z ≃ 6. We conclude that all available evidence continues to favour a scenario in which young galaxies reionized the Universe, with AGN making, at most, a very minor contribution to cosmic hydrogen reionization. X-ray emission is one of the signposts of circumstellar interaction in supernovae (SNe), but until now, it has been observed only in core-collapse SNe. The level of thermal X-ray emission is a direct measure of the density of the circumstellar medium (CSM), and the absence of X-ray emission from Type Ia SNe has been interpreted as a sign of a very low density CSM. In this paper, we report late-time (500-800 d after discovery) X-ray detections of SN 2012ca in Chandra data. The presence of hydrogen in the initial spectrum led to a classification of Type Ia-CSM, ostensibly making it the first SN Ia detected with X-rays. Our analysis of the X-ray data favours an asymmetric medium, with a high-density component which supplies the X-ray emission. The data suggest a number density >108 cm-3 in the higher density medium, which is consistent with the large observed Balmer decrement if it arises from collisional excitation. This is high compared to most core-collapse SNe, but it may be consistent with densities suggested for some Type IIn or superluminous SNe. If SN 2012ca is a thermonuclear SN, the large CSM density could imply clumps in the wind, or a dense torus or disc, consistent with the single-degenerate channel. A remote possibility for a core-degenerate channel involves a white dwarf merging with the degenerate core of an asymptotic giant branch star shortly before the explosion, leading to a common envelope around the SN. The XMM Cluster Archive Super Survey (X-CLASS) is a serendipitously detected X-ray-selected sample of 845 galaxy clusters based on 2774XMMarchival observations and covering an approximately 90 deg2 spread across the high-Galactic latitude (|b| > 20°) sky. The primary goal of this survey is to produce a well-selected sample of galaxy clusters on which cosmological analyses can be performed. This paper presents the photometric redshift followup of a high signal-to-noise ratio subset of 265 of these clusters with declination δ < +20° with Gamma-Ray Burst Optical and Near-Infrared Detector (GROND), a 7-channel (grizJHK) simultaneous imager on the MPG 2.2-m telescope at the ESO La Silla Observatory. We use a newly developed technique based on the red sequence colour-redshift relation, enhanced with information coming from the X-ray detection to provide photometric redshifts for this sample. We determine photometric redshifts for 232 clusters, finding a median redshift of z = 0.39 with an accuracy of Δz = 0.02(1 + z) when compared to a sample of 76 spectroscopically confirmed clusters.We also computeX-ray luminosities for the entire sample and find amedian bolometric luminosity of 7.2 × 1043 erg s-1 and a median temperature of 2.9 keV. We compare our results to those of the XMM-XCS and XMM-XXL surveys, finding good agreement in both samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the detection of high-amplitude X-ray flaring of the AGN HE 1136-2304, which is accompanied by a strong increase in the flux of the broad Balmer lines, changing its Seyfert type from almost type 2 in 1993 down to 1.5 in 2014. HE 1136-2304 was detected by the XMM-Newton slew survey at >10 times the flux it had in the ROSAT all-sky survey, and confirmed with Swift follow-up after increasing in X-ray flux by a factor of ~30. Optical spectroscopy with SALT shows that the AGN has changed from a Seyfert 1.95 to a Seyfert 1.5 galaxy, with greatly increased broad line emission and an increase in blue continuum AGN flux by a factor of >4. The X-ray spectra from XMM-Newton and NuSTAR reveal moderate intrinsic absorption and a high energy cutoff at ~100 keV. We consider several different physical scenarios for a flare, such as changes in obscuring material, tidal disruption events, and an increase in the accretion rate. We find that the most likely cause of the increased flux is an increase in the accretion rate, although it could also be due to a change in obscuration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Daily X-ray flaring represents an enigmatic phenomenon of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) - the supermassive black hole at the centre of our Galaxy. We report initial results from a systematic X-ray study of this phenomenon, based on extensive Chandra observations obtained from 1999 to 2012, totalling about 4.5 Ms. We detect flares, using a combination of the maximum likelihood and Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, which allow for a direct accounting for the pileup effect in the modelling of the flare light curves and an optimal use of the data, as well as the measurements of flare parameters, including their uncertainties. A total of 82 flares are detected. About one third of them are relatively faint, which were not detected previously. The observation-to-observation variation of the quiescent emission has an average root-mean-square of 6-14 per cent, including the Poisson statistical fluctuation of faint flares below our detection limits. We find no significant long-term variation in the quiescent emission and the flare rate over the 14 years. In particular, we see no evidence of changing quiescent emission and flare rate around the pericentre passage of the S2 star around 2002. We show clear evidence of a short-term clustering for the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer - Spectroscopy array/high energy transmission gratings 0th-order flares on time-scale of 20-70 ks. We further conduct detailed simulations to characterize the detection incompleteness and bias, which is critical to a comprehensive follow-up statistical analysis of flare properties. These studies together will help to establish Sgr A* as a unique laboratory to understand the astrophysics of prevailing low-luminosity black holes in the Universe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PSR J1357-6429 is a young radio pulsar that has been detected in the X-ray and γ -ray bands. We present high spatial resolution near-infrared imaging of the pulsar field in the J, H and Ks bands obtained using the VLT/NaCo with the Adaptive Optic system. We found a faint source at the most precise pulsar radio position, which we propose as the pulsar near-infrared counterpart candidate. It is confidently detected in the J and Ks bands, with J=23.51±0.24 and Ks =21.82±0.25. There is a hint of the source in theHband, with an upper limitH>22.8. The dereddened source fluxes are compatible with the extrapolation of the pulsar X-ray spectrum towards the near-infrared. If the candidate is the true counterpart, this property means that PSR J1357-6429 would be similar to the nearby middle-age pulsar PSR B0656+14. In this case, both pulsars demonstrate an unusually high near-infrared efficiency relative to the X-ray efficiency as compared with other pulsars detected in these two ranges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dust grains scatter X-ray light through small angles, producing a diffuse halo image around bright X-ray point sources situated behind a large amount of interstellar material. We present analytic solutions to the integral for the dust scattering intensity, which allow for a Bayesian analysis of the scattering halo around Cygnus X-3. Fitting the optically thin 4-6 keV halo surface brightness profile yields the dust grain size and spatial distribution. We assume a power-law distribution of grain sizes (n α a--p) and fit for p, the grain radius cut-off amax, and dust mass column. We find that ap ≈ 3.5 dust grain size distribution with amax ≈ 0.2 μm fits the halo profile relatively well, whether the dust is distributed uniformly along the line of sight or in clumps. We find that a model consisting of two dust screens, representative of foreground spiral arms, requires the foreground Perseus arm to contain 80 per cent of the total dust mass. The remaining 20 per cent of the dust, which may be associated with the outer spiral arm of the Milky Way, is located within 1 kpc of Cyg X-3. Regardless of which model was used, we found tsca ~ 2 EkeV-2. We examine the energy resolved haloes of Cyg X-3 from 1 to 6 keV and find that there is a sharp drop in scattering halo intensity when E < 2-3 keV, which cannot be explained with multiple scattering effects. We hypothesize that this may be caused by large dust grains or material with unique dielectric properties, causing the scattering cross-section to depart from the Rayleigh-Gans approximation that is used most often in X-ray scattering studies. The foreground Cyg OB2 association, which contains several evolved stars with large extinction values, is a likely culprit for grains of unique size or composition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we investigate the relationship between the star formation rate (SFR) and AGN luminosity (LAGN) for ~2000 X-ray detected AGN. The AGN span over three orders of magnitude in X-ray luminosity (1042 < L2-8keV < 1045.5 erg s-1) and are in the redshift range z = 0.2-2.5. Using infrared (IR) photometry (8-500 μm), including deblended Spitzer and Herschel images and taking into account photometric upper limits, we decompose the IR spectral energy distributions into AGN and star formation components. Using the IR luminosities due to star formation, we investigate the average SFRs as a function of redshift and AGN luminosity. In agreement with previous studies, we find a strong evolution of the average SFR with redshift, tracking the observed evolution of the overall star-forming galaxy population. However, we find that the relationship between the average SFR and AGN luminosity is broadly flat at all redshifts and across all the AGN luminosities investigated; in comparison to previous studies, we find less scatter amongst the average SFRs across the wide range of AGN luminosities investigated. By comparing to empirical models, we argue that the observed flat relationship is due to short time-scale variations in AGN luminosity, driven by changes in the mass accretion rate, which wash out any underlying correlations between SFR and LAGN. Furthermore, we show that the exact form of the predicted relationship between SFR and AGN luminosity (and its normalization) is highly sensitive to the assumed intrinsic Eddington ratio distribution. One of the major sources of the X-ray emitting hot gas around galaxies is the feedback from supernovae (SNe), but most of this metal-enriched feedback material is often not directly detected in X-ray observations. This missing galactic feedback problem is extremely prominent in early-type galaxy bulges, where there is little cool gas to make the Type Ia SNe ejecta radiate at lower temperature beyond the X-ray domain. We herein present a deep Suzaku observation of an S0 galaxy NGC 5866, which is relatively rich in molecular gas as an S0 galaxy and shows significant evidence of cool-hot gas interaction. By jointly analysing the Suzaku and an archival Chandra data, we measure the Fe/O abundance ratio to be 7.63+7.28-5.52 relative to solar values. This abundance ratio is much higher than those of spiral galaxies, and even among the highest ones of S0 and elliptical galaxies. NGC 5866 also simultaneously has the highest Fe/O abundance ratio and molecular gas mass among a small sample of gas-poor early-type galaxies. An estimation of the Fe budget indicates that NGC 5866 could preserve a larger than usual fraction, but far from the total amount of Fe injected by Type Ia SNe. We also find that the hot gas temperature increases from inner to outer haloes, with the inner region has a temperature of ~0.25 keV, clearly lower than that expected from Type Ia SNe heating. This low temperature could be most naturally explained by additional cooling processes related to the cool-hot gas interaction as being indicated by the existence of many extraplanar dusty filaments. Our results indicate that the large cool gas content and the presence of cool-hot gas interaction in the inner region of NGC 5866 have significantly reduced the specific energy of the SN ejecta and so the velocity of the galactic outflow. The galaxy could thus preserve a considerable fraction of the metal-enriched feedback material from being blown out. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present X-shooter at Very Large Telescope observations of a sample of 10 luminous, X-ray obscured quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) at z ~ 1.5 from the XMM-COSMOS survey, expected to be caught in the transitioning phase from starburst to active galactic nucleus (AGN)-dominated systems. The main selection criterion is X-ray detection at bright fluxes (LX 1044 erg s-1) coupled to red optical-to-near-infrared-to-mid-infrared colours. Thanks to its large wavelength coverage, X-shooter allowed us to determine accurate redshifts from the presence of multiple emission lines for five out of six targets for which we had only a photometric redshift estimate, with an 80 per cent success rate, significantly larger than what is observed in similar programs of spectroscopic follow-up of red QSOs. We report the detection of broad and shifted components in the [OIII] ƛƛ5007, 4959 complexes for six out of eight sources with these lines observable in regions free from strong atmospheric absorptions. The full width at half-maximum (FWHM) associated with the broad components are in the range FWHM ~ 900-1600 km s-1, larger than the average value observed in Sloan Digital Sky Survey type 2 AGN samples at similar observed [OIII] luminosity, but comparable to those observed for QSO/ultraluminous infrared galaxies systems for which the presence of kpc scale outflows has been revealed through integral field unit spectroscopy. Although the total outflow energetics (inferred under reasonable assumptions) may be consistent with winds accelerated by stellar processes, we favour an AGN origin for the outflows given the high outflow velocities observed (v > 1000 km s-1) and the presence of strong winds also in objects undetected in the far-infrared.
