Search

Future surveys could obtain tighter constraints on the cosmological parameters with the galaxy power spectrum than with the cosmic microwave background. However, the inclusion of multiple overlapping tracers, redshift bins, and more non-linear scales means that generating the necessary ensemble of simulations for model-fitting presents a computational burden. In this work, we combine full-shape fitting of galaxy power spectra, analytical covariance matrix estimates, the massively optimized parameter estimation and data compression (MOPED) method, and the Taylor expansion interpolation of the power spectrum for the first time to constrain the cosmological parameters directly from a state-of-the-art set of galaxy clustering measurements. We find it takes less than a day to compute the analytical covariance while it takes several months to calculate the simulated ones. Combining MOPED with the Taylor expansion interpolation of the power spectrum, we can constrain the cosmological parameters in just a few hours instead of a few days. We also find that even without a priori knowledge of the best-fitting cosmological or galaxy bias parameters, the analytical covariance matrix with the MOPED compression still gives consistent cosmological constraints to within 0.1σ after two iterations. We evaluate the effectiveness of early dark energy (EDE) in addressing the Hubble tension using the luminous red galaxy (LRG), quasar (QSO), and emission line galaxy (ELG) samples from the completed eBOSS survey. We perform cosmological parameter measurements based on full shape analysis of the power spectrum employing the effective field theory of large-scale structure (EFTofLSS). EDE is known to strongly suffer from volume projection effects, complicating cosmological constraints' interpretation. To quantify the volume projection effects within an EDE full shape analysis, we explore the impact of different prior choices on the nuisance parameters of EFTofLSS through an extensive mock study. We compare classical Gaussian priors to the non-informative Jeffreys prior, known to mitigate volume projection effects in ΛCDM. Our full shape analysis combines eBOSS and BOSS data with Planck , external Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO), PantheonPlus, and SH0ES supernova data. EDE reduces the tension from 5.2σ to 3σ compared to ΛCDM, yielding |$H_0=71.73_{-0.86}^{+0.82}$| km s−1 Mpc−1 with |$f_\mathrm{EDE} = 0.1179_{-0.022}^{+0.025}$| (Gaussian priors) and |$H_0=72.03_{-0.87}^{+0.82}$| km s−1 Mpc−1 with |$f_\mathrm{EDE} = 0.1399_{-0.022}^{+0.023}$| (Jeffreys prior). Although the Hubble tension is mitigated compared to ΛCDM, the inclusion of eBOSS data amplifies the tension within EDE from 2σ to 3σ, in contrast to the full shape analysis of BOSS data with Planck , external BAO, PantheonPlus, and SH0ES. Spherical stellar systems have weakly damped response modes. The dipole modes are seiche modes. The quadrupole are zero pattern-speed prolate modes, the stable precursors to the radial orbit instability (ROI). We demonstrate that small wiggles in the distribution function (DF) can destabilize the dipole modes and describe the newly identified instabilities in NFW-like dark-matter (DM) haloes and other power-law spherical systems. The modes were identified in N -body simulations using multivariate singular spectrum analysis and corroborated using linear-response theory. The new mode peaks inside the half-mass radius but has a pattern speed typical of an outer-halo orbit. As it grows, the radial angle of the eccentric orbits that make up the mode correlates and loses angular momentum by a resonant couple to outer-halo orbits. This leads to an unsteady pattern with a density enhancement that swings from one side of the halo to another along a diameter, like the orbits that comprise the instability. In this way, the dipole mode is similar to the ROI. Since the DF found in Nature is unlikely to be smooth and isotropic with d f (E)/d E < 0 necessary for Antonov stability, these modes may be ubiquitous albeit slowly growing. Haloes that are less extended than NFW, such as the Hernquist model, tend to be stable to this dipole instability. We present the critical stability exponents for one- and two-power models. These different critical outer power-law exponents illustrate that the gravitational coupling between the inner and outer DM halo depends on the global shape of density profile. The next generation of weak lensing surveys will measure the matter distribution of the local universe with unprecedented precision, allowing the resolution of non-Gaussian features of the convergence field. This encourages the use of higher-order mass-map statistics for cosmological parameter inference. We extend the forward-modelling based methodology introduced in a previous forecast paper to match these new requirements. We provide multiple forecasts for the |$w$| CDM parameter constraints that can be expected from stage 3 and 4 weak lensing surveys. We consider different survey setups, summary statistics and mass map filters including wavelets. We take into account the shear bias, photometric redshift uncertainties, and intrinsic alignment. The impact of baryons is investigated and the necessary scale cuts are applied. We compare the angular power spectrum analysis to peak and minima counts as well as Minkowski functionals of the mass maps. We find a preference for Starlet over Gaussian filters. Our results suggest that using a survey setup with 10 instead of 5 tomographic redshift bins is beneficial. Adding cross-tomographic information improves the constraints on cosmology and especially on galaxy intrinsic alignment for all statistics. In terms of constraining power, we find the angular power spectrum and the peak counts to be equally matched for stage 4 surveys, followed by minima counts and the Minkowski functionals. Combining different summary statistics significantly improves the constraints and compensates the stringent scale cuts. We explore the timing and spectral properties of GRS 1915+105 based on X-ray observations of NICER and Insight -HXMT during the long outburst from 2017 to 2021. We find a new class of variability in the rising stage of the outburst that differs from the formerly reported patterns of light curves. This new variability pattern, which we name class ψ, is characterized by several periodic mini pulses superposed on another longer periodic pulse. The periods are ∼130 and ∼10 s for the main pulses and mini pulses, respectively, based on the analysis of power spectrum density and step-wise filter correlation (SFC), where the SFC method has an advantage in finding the superimposed periodic components. The mini pulses become weak or disappear when the luminosity increases and the light curves change into the classical class κ. The class ψ shows a softer spectrum with lower count rates compared to the class κ during the main pulse. The new class ψ shows peculiar timing and spectral properties compared to those of classic class κ, which can help us to explore the class transition mechanism in GRS 1915+105. We report the analysis of high-precision space-based photometric and high-resolution spectroscopic observations of HD 180347. The high-quality light curves from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) under sectors 14, 15, and 26 were used. By visual inspection of the light curves and the Fourier transforms, only low-frequency signals (less than 1 d−1) were detected. After using wavelet, autocorrelation, and composite spectrum analyses, HD 180347 is classified as a rotational variable with a period of about 4.1 ± 0.2 d. In reference to the observation limit of TESS , no pulsations were detected. For the spectroscopic analysis, we used data collected with the High Efficiency and Resolution Mercator Échelle Spectrograph (HERMES). We determined the spectral type of this star and obtained atmospheric parameters such as the effective temperature, the surface gravity, and the projected rotational, microturbulent, and radial velocities. We performed a detailed chemical abundance analysis. The LTE abundances were derived for 25 chemical elements. For 13 of them, including Ca, Sc, Sr, Zr, and Ba, which are important for the characterization of chemical peculiarities, we also present the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) abundances. NLTE improves the accuracy of the derived abundances and confirms that Ca and Sc are depleted in HD 180347 relative to their solar abundances, while the heavy elements beyond Sr are enhanced, by more than 0.7 dex. We provide in this paper new Stark broadening parameters for the four ions Ga IV, Ga V, Ge IV, and Ge V. The calculations have been performed using our quantum mechanical method. To the best of our knowledge, the only available Stark broadening results are those of the Ge IV ion, where the semiclassical perturbation and the modified semi-empirical methods have been used. For the three other ions, no data have been found. In 2020 and for the first time, about five hundred lines of trans-iron elements including gallium (Ga) and germanium (Ge) have been identified in the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum of a DAO-type white dwarf BD-22°3467. Other precedent observations showed the existence of Ga IV–V lines in two white dwarfs (G191-B2B and RE 0503-289), and those of Ge IV and Ge V in the UV spectrum of RE 0503-289. Theoretical evaluations and measurements of atomic and Stark broadening data are a pre-requisite for stellar-atmosphere modelling, which is a tool for the determination of the photospheric Ga and Ge abundance in white dwarfs. Since there is no Stark broadening data for the three ions Ga IV, Ga V, and Ge V, our calculations come to fill this gap, and the obtained results can be used for the abundance determination of elements, the calculation of stellar opacity, the interpretation and modelling of stellar spectra, and the estimation of the relative transfer through stellar plasmas. Studying coupling between different galactic components is a challenging problem in galactic dynamics. Using basis function expansions (BFEs) and multichannel singular spectrum analysis (mSSA) as a means of dynamical data mining, we discover evidence for two multicomponent disc–halo dipole modes in a Milky-Way-like simulated galaxy. One of the modes grows throughout the simulation, while the other decays throughout the simulation. The multicomponent disc–halo modes are driven primarily by the halo, and have implications for the structural evolution of galaxies, including observations of lopsidedness and other non-axisymmetric structure. In our simulation, the modes create surface density features up to 10 per cent relative to the equilibrium model stellar disc. While the simulated galaxy was constructed to be in equilibrium, BFE + mSSA also uncovered evidence of persistent periodic signals incited by aphysical initial conditions disequilibrium, including rings and weak two-armed spirals, both at the 1 per cent level. The method is sensitive to distinct evolutionary features at and even below the 1 per cent level of surface density variation. The use of mSSA produced clean signals for both modes and disequilibrium, efficiently removing variance owing to estimator noise from the input BFE time series. The discovery of multicomponent halo–disc modes is strong motivation for application of BFE + mSSA to the rich zoo of dynamics of multicomponent interacting galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding the temporal characteristics of data from low-frequency radio telescopes is of importance in devising suitable calibration strategies. Application of time-series analysis techniques to data from radio telescopes can reveal a wealth of information that can aid in calibration. In this paper, we investigate singular spectrum analysis (SSA) as an analysis tool for radio data. We show the intimate connection between SSA and Fourier techniques. We develop the relevant mathematics starting with an idealized periodic dataset and proceeding to include various non-ideal behaviours. We propose a novel technique to obtain long-term gain changes in data, leveraging the periodicity arising from sky drift through the antenna beams. We also simulate several plausible scenarios and apply the techniques to a 30-day time series data collected during 2021 June from SITARA – a short-spacing two element interferometer for global 21-cm detection. Applying the techniques to real data, we find that the first reconstructed component – the trend – has a strong anti-correlation with the local temperature suggesting temperature fluctuations as the most likely origin for the observed variations in the data. We also study the limitations of the calibration in the presence of diurnal gain variations and find that such variations are the likely impediment to calibrating SITARA data with SSA. Interacting dark energy models have been suggested as alternatives to the standard cosmological model, ΛCDM. We focus on a phenomenologically interesting class of dark scattering models that is characterized by pure momentum exchange between dark energy and dark matter. This model extends the parameter space with respect to ΛCDM by two parameters, w and A , which define the dark energy equation of state and the strength of the coupling between dark energy and dark matter, respectively. In order to test non-standard cosmologies with Stage-IV galaxy clustering surveys, it is crucial to model mildly non-linear scales and perform precision versus accuracy tests. We use the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure; and we perform validation tests by means of an MCMC analysis using a large set of N -body simulations. We find that adding the bispectrum monopole to the power spectrum multipoles improves the constraints on the dark energy parameters by |$\sim 30 {{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| for |$k_{\mathrm{max}, B}^{l=0} = 0.11$|   h  Mpc−1, without introducing biases in the parameter estimation. We also find that the same improvement can be achieved with more moderate scale cuts and the use of bias relations, or with the addition of the bispectrum quadrupole. Finally, we study degeneracies between the dark energy parameters and the scalar amplitude A s and discuss the corresponding projection effects, as well as degeneracies with other cosmological parameters. The central part of the Galaxy hosts a multitude of stellar populations, including the spheroidal bulge stars, stars moved to the bulge through secular evolution of the bar, inner halo, inner thick disc, inner thin disc, as well as debris from past accretion events. We identified a sample of 58 candidate stars belonging to the stellar population of the spheroidal bulge, and analyse their abundances. The present calculations of Mg, Ca, and Si lines are in agreement with the ASPCAP abundances, whereas abundances of C, N, O, and Ce are re-examined. We find normal α-element enhancements in oxygen, similar to magnesium, Si, and Ca abundances, which are typical of other bulge stars surveyed in the optical in Baade's Window. The enhancement of [O/Fe] in these stars suggests that they do not belong to accreted debris. No spread in N abundances is found, and none of the sample stars is N-rich, indicating that these stars are not second generation stars originated in globular clusters. Ce instead is enhanced in the sample stars, which points to an s-process origin such as due to enrichment from early generations of massive fast rotating stars, the so-called spinstars. Here, we investigate the kinematics of the part of the broad-line region (BLR) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) emitting H β and H α emission lines. We explore the widths and asymmetries of the broad H β and H α emission lines in a sample of high-quality (i.e. high signal-to-noise ratio) spectra of type-1 AGN taken from the Data Release 16 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in order to explore possible deviation from the gravitationally bound motion. To find only the broad component of H β and H α, we use the fantasy (Fully Automated pythoN Tool for AGN Spectra analYsis) code for the multicomponent modelling of the AGN spectra and for careful extraction of the broad emission-line parameters. We show that based on the broad-line profiles widths and asymmetries, the BLR gas emitting H β and H α lines follows similar kinematics, and seems to be virialized in our sample of type-1 AGN. We analyse medium resolution optical spectra of 14 narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies with average to strong iron emission. The targets were observed several times over a 2-yr period to probe the nature of spectral variations. Parameters determined from fitting the line profiles include relative strength, width, and asymmetry. We explore the applicability of various profile combinations to H β. We achieve satisfactory fits using three components: the narrow and broad components characteristic of all Seyfert 1 galaxies and that are reasonably represented by Gaussian profiles, and an intermediate component with width similar to that of the Fe  ii lines. This intermediate component accounted for the largest fraction of the H β flux in most of our sample, especially when fitted with a Lorentzian instead of a Gaussian profile. This Lorentzian component improves the overall H β fits in most cases. In contrast to many other types of active galactic nucleus, no dramatic spectral changes were detected in our sample over the 2-yr period spanning this study, even though some of our targets are known for large and rapid X-ray variability. In particular, we find the variability of the Fe  ii lines relative to the H β intermediate component to be minimal. For the [O  iii ] lines, we identified asymmetries in almost all our targets well represented by two Gaussians: a primary central and a second blueshifted component. These may signify different gas dynamics connected with nuclear outflow. As in several previous studies, we identify a clear correlation between [O  iii ] asymmetry and its core component width. We report results on the joint-fit of the NuSTAR and HXMT data for the black hole X-ray binary candidate MAXI J1535-571. The observations were obtained in 2017 when the source evolved through the hard, hard-intermediate, and soft-intermediate states over the rising phase of the outburst. After subtracting continuum components, X-ray reflection signatures are clearly showed in those observations. By modelling the relativistic reflection in detail, we find that the inner radius R in is relatively stable with R in ≲ 1.55 R g during the three states, which implies that the inner radius likely extends to the innermost stable circular orbit even in the bright hard state. When adopting R in = R ISCO, the spin parameter is constrained to be |$0.985_{-0.004}^{+0.002}$| at 90 per cent confidence (statistical only). The best-fitting results reveal that the inclination of the inner accretion disc is ∼70–74 deg, which notably conflicts with the apparent orientation of the ballistic jet (≤45 deg). In addition, both the photon index and the electron temperature increase during the transition from hard to soft state. It seems that the corona evolves from dense low-temperature in the low/hard state to tenuous high-temperature after the state transition, which indicates that the state transition is accompanied by the evolution of the coronal properties. In this work, we aim to investigate the presence of absorption bands around 3.4 μm in the infrared spectra of primitive asteroids. We collected the published reflectance spectra of low-albedo asteroids from the literature and analysed the 2.4–3.8 μm region using the same techniques. From the initial data set of 92 asteroids, we restricted our analysis to 42 spectra of low-albedo asteroids with a good signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, and we found the absorption feature around 3.4 μm in the spectra of 16 objects. For objects that are classified by the 3 μm band into the 'rounded', Ceres-like, and Europa-like groups, the depth of the 3.4 μm feature is strongly correlated with that of the 3 μm band. The majority of objects in our data set not showing the 3.4 μm absorption band have lower S/N spectra and belong to Ch or Chg classes, while asteroids with a detected 3.4 μm bands mostly belong to C, B, and also P types. Additionally, asteroids with a detected 3.4 μm band tend to have a lower albedo, redder J-K colours, and more neutral U-V colours. We observe that the analysed objects larger than ∼300 km in diameter show features due to carbon-bearing materials, which could be explained by their higher S/N ratio in our data set. Finally, we found that the distributions of asteroids showing the 3.4 μm feature appear to be shifted towards larger distances from the Sun compared to those not showing this band. In this investigation, oscillation periods in Mg  ii k-line intensity, brightness temperature, and Doppler velocity obtained above magnetic bright points (MBPs) are investigated. For this purpose, data from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrometer (IRIS) observing the higher chromosphere and transition region (TR) were analysed, together with imaging and magnetogram data obtained by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The MBPs were identified by combining Si  iv 1403-Å slit-jaw images with magnetogram information from the Heliospheric and Magnetic Imager (HMI). A time-slice analysis followed by a wavelet inspection were carried out on the Mg  ii k (2796-Å and 10 000 K) resonance lines for the detection of the oscillation period. Finally, a power spectrum analysis was performed to characterize the oscillations. It was found that the network points feature a typical intensity, temperature, and velocity oscillation period of about 300 s. The internetwork points have a mean intensity oscillation period of about 180 s, a mean temperature oscillation period of about 202 s, and a mean velocity oscillation period of about 202 s. In addition, one BP that was analysed in detail demonstrates intensity oscillation periods with a value of 500 s, which are obviously not related to the common 3- or 5-min oscillations typically found elsewhere in chromospheric/photospheric structures. Empirical estimates of the band power covariance matrix are commonly used in cosmic microwave background (CMB) power spectrum analyses. While this approach easily captures correlations in the data, noise in the resulting covariance estimate can systematically bias the parameter fitting. Conditioning the estimated covariance matrix, by applying prior information on the shape of the eigenvectors, can reduce these biases and ensure the recovery of robust parameter constraints. In this work, we use simulations to benchmark the performance of four different conditioning schemes, motivated by contemporary CMB analyses. The simulated surveys measure the TT ,  TE , and EE power spectra over the angular multipole range 300 ≤ ℓ ≤ 3500 in Δℓ = 50 wide bins, for temperature map-noise levels of 10, 6.4, and |$2\, \mu$| K arcmin. We divide the survey data into N real = 30, 50, or 100 uniform subsets. We show the results of different conditioning schemes on the errors in the covariance estimate, and how these uncertainties on the covariance matrix propagate to the best-fitting parameters and parameter uncertainties. The most significant effect we find is an additional scatter in the best-fitting point, beyond what is expected from the data likelihood. For a minimal conditioning strategy, N real = 30, and a temperature map-noise level of 10 |$\, \mu$| K arcmin, we find the uncertainty on the recovered best-fitting parameter to be ×1.3 larger than the apparent posterior width from the likelihood (×1.2 larger than the uncertainty when the true covariance is used). Stronger priors on the covariance matrix reduce the misestimation of parameter uncertainties to |$\lt 1{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠. Oscillating eclipsing Algols (oEAs) are remarkable systems that allow us to determine accurate fundamental stellar parameters (mass, radius) and probe the stellar interiors through pulsations. TZ Dra is an oEA system containing a δ Scuti component. To examine particular characteristics of such close systems including pulsations and mass transfer, we present a detailed photometric and spectroscopic study of TZ Dra. With the analysis of high-resolution spectra, the orbital parameters were determined by the radial velocity analysis and the atmospheric parameters were derived for the primary component. The binary modelling and the pulsational frequency analysis was carried out using the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite data set. The H α line profiles show the signature of mass transfer from the cool to the hot binary component. The conclusion of mass transfer/mass-loss in the system was supported by the analysis of the orbital period changes. As a result, it was found that there is |$3.52 \times 10^{-9}\, {\rm M}_\odot$|  yr−1 mass-loss from the system most probably through the hotspot and stellar winds. Additionally, most pulsation frequencies originating from the primary component were found to be spaced by harmonics of the orbital frequencies in particular, 12 doublets spaced by 2 f orb were detected from which we infer that this star is a tidally tilted pulsator. A mean p-mode frequency spacing of ≈7.2 d−1 was found as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ensemble of chemical element abundance measurements for stars, along with precision distances and orbit properties, provides high-dimensional data to study the evolution of the Milky Way. With this third data release of the Galactic Archaeology with HERMES (GALAH) survey, we publish 678 423 spectra for 588 571 mostly nearby stars (81.2 per cent of stars are within <2 kpc), observed with the HERMES spectrograph at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. This release (hereafter GALAH+ DR3) includes all observations from GALAH Phase 1 (bright, main, and faint survey, 70 per cent), K2-HERMES (17 per cent), TESS-HERMES (5 per cent), and a subset of ancillary observations (8 per cent) including the bulge and >75 stellar clusters. We derive stellar parameters T eff, log  g , [Fe/H], v mic, v broad, and v rad using our modified version of the spectrum synthesis code Spectroscopy Made Easy (sme) and 1D marcs model atmospheres. We break spectroscopic degeneracies in our spectrum analysis with astrometry from Gaia  DR2 and photometry from 2MASS. We report abundance ratios [X/Fe] for 30 different elements (11 of which are based on non-LTE computations) covering five nucleosynthetic pathways. We describe validations for accuracy and precision, flagging of peculiar stars/measurements and recommendations for using our results. Our catalogue comprises 65 per cent dwarfs, 34 per cent giants, and 1 per cent other/unclassified stars. Based on unflagged chemical composition and age, we find 62 per cent young low- |$\alpha$|⁠ , 9 per cent young high- |$\alpha$|⁠ , 27 per cent old high- |$\alpha$|⁠ , and 2 per cent stars with [Fe/H] ≤ −1. Based on kinematics, 4 per cent are halo stars. Several Value-Added-Catalogues, including stellar ages and dynamics, updated after Gaia eDR3, accompany this release and allow chrono-chemodynamic analyses, as we showcase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate whether a Gaussian likelihood is sufficient to obtain accurate parameter constraints from a Euclid -like combined tomographic power spectrum analysis of weak lensing, galaxy clustering, and their cross-correlation. Testing its performance on the full sky against the Wishart distribution, which is the exact likelihood under the assumption of Gaussian fields, we find that the Gaussian likelihood returns accurate parameter constraints. This accuracy is robust to the choices made in the likelihood analysis, including the choice of fiducial cosmology, the range of scales included, and the random noise level. We extend our results to the cut sky by evaluating the additional non-Gaussianity of the joint cut-sky likelihood in both its marginal distributions and dependence structure. We find that the cut-sky likelihood is more non-Gaussian than the full-sky likelihood, but at a level insufficient to introduce significant inaccuracy into parameter constraints obtained using the Gaussian likelihood. Our results should not be affected by the assumption of Gaussian fields, as this approximation only becomes inaccurate on small scales, which in turn corresponds to the limit in which any non-Gaussianity of the likelihood becomes negligible. We nevertheless compare against N-body weak lensing simulations and find no evidence of significant additional non-Gaussianity in the likelihood. We investigate the prospects for using the weak lensing bispectrum alongside the power spectrum to control systematic uncertainties in a Euclid -like survey. Three systematic effects are considered: the intrinsic alignment of galaxies, uncertainties in the means of tomographic redshift distributions, and multiplicative bias in the measurement of the shear signal. We find that the bispectrum is very effective in mitigating these systematic errors. Varying all three systematics simultaneously, a joint power spectrum and bispectrum analysis reduces the area of credible regions for the cosmological parameters Ωm and σ8 by a factor of 90 and for the two parameters of a time-varying dark energy equation of state by a factor of almost 20, compared with the baseline approach of using the power spectrum alone and of imposing priors consistent with the accuracy requirements specified for Euclid. We also demonstrate that including the bispectrum self-calibrates all three systematic effects to the stringent levels required by the forthcoming generation of weak lensing surveys, thereby reducing the need for external calibration data. High-redshift 21-cm observations will provide crucial insights into the physical processes of the Epoch of Reionization. Next-generation interferometers such as the Square Kilometer Array will have enough sensitivity to directly image the 21-cm fluctuations and trace the evolution of the ionizing fronts. In this work, we develop an inferential approach to recover the sources and IGM properties of the process of reionization using the number and, in particular, the morphological pattern spectra of the ionized regions extracted from realistic mock observations. To do so, we extend the Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis tool 21cmmc by including these 21-cm tomographic statistics and compare this method to only using the power spectrum. We demonstrate that the evolution of the number-count and morphology of the ionized regions as a function of redshift provides independent information to disentangle multiple reionization scenarios because it probes the average ionizing budget per baryon. Although less precise, we find that constraints inferred using 21-cm tomographic statistics are more robust to the presence of contaminants such as foreground residuals. We report the results from spectroscopic observations of the multiple images of the strongly lensed Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), iPTF16geu, obtained with ground-based telescopes and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). From a single epoch of slitless spectroscopy with HST , we resolve spectra of individual lensed supernova images for the first time. This allows us to perform an independent measurement of the time-delay between the two brightest images, Δ t = 1.4 ± 5.0 d, which is consistent with the time-delay measured from the light curves. We also present measurements of narrow emission and absorption lines characterizing the interstellar medium in the SN Ia host galaxy at z = 0.4087, as well as in the foreground lensing galaxy at z = 0.2163. We detect strong Na  id absorption in the host galaxy, indicating that iPTF16geu belongs to a subclass of SNe Ia displaying 'anomalously' large Na  id column densities compared to dust extinction derived from light curves. For the lens galaxy, we refine the measurement of the velocity dispersion, σ = 129 ± 4 km s−1, which significantly constrains the lens model. We use ground-based spectroscopy, boosted by a factor ∼70 from lensing magnification, to study the properties of a high- z SN Ia with unprecedented signal-to-noise ratio. The spectral properties of the supernova, such as pseudo-Equivalent widths of several absorption features and velocities of the Si  ii -line, indicate that iPTF16geu is a normal SN Ia. We do not detect any significant deviations of the SN spectral energy distribution from microlensing of the SN photosphere by stars and compact objects in the lensing galaxy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spectroscopic observations of AH Herculis during a deep quiescent state are put forward. We found the object in a rare long minima, allowing us to derive accurately the semi-amplitudes: |$K_1 =121 \pm \, 4$|  km s−1 and K 2 = 152 ± 2 km s−1 and its mass functions MW sin 3 i  = 0.30 ± 0.01 M⊙ and MR sin 3 i  = 0.24 ± 0.02 M⊙, while its binary separation is given by a sin  i  = 1.39 ± 0.02 R⊙. The orbital period P orb =  0.25812 ± 0.00032 d was found from a power spectrum analysis of the radial velocities of the secondary star. These values are consistent with those determined by Horne, Wade & Szkody. Our observations indicate that K5 is the most likely spectral type of the secondary. We discuss why we favour the assumption that the donor in AH Her is a slightly evolved star, in which case we find that the best solution for the inclination yields i  = 48° ± 2°. None the less, should the donor be a ZAMS star, we obtain that the inclination is between i  = 43° and i  = 44°. We also present Doppler tomography of H α and H β, and found that the emission in both lines is concentrated in a large asymmetric region at low velocities, but at an opposite position to the secondary star, outside the tidal radius and therefore at an unstable position. We also analyse the H α and H β line profiles, which show a single broad peak and compare it with the previous quiescent state study that shows a double-peaked profile, providing evidence for its transient nature. We present Bayesian active galactic nucleus (AGN) Decomposition Analysis for Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Spectra, an open source spectral analysis code designed for automatic detailed deconvolution of AGN and host galaxy spectra, implemented in python , and designed for the next generation of large-scale surveys. The code simultaneously fits all spectral components, including power-law continuum, stellar line-of-sight velocity distribution, Fe  ii emission, as well as forbidden (narrow), permitted (broad), and outflow emission line features, all performed using Markov chain Monte Carlo to obtain robust uncertainties and autocorrelation analysis to assess parameter convergence. Our code also utilizes multiprocessing for batch fitting large samples of spectra while efficiently managing memory and computation resources and is currently being used in a cluster environment to fit thousands of SDSS spectra. We use our code to perform a correlation analysis of 63 SDSS type 1 AGNs with evidence of strong non-gravitational outflow kinematics in the [O  iii ] λ5007 emission feature. We confirm findings from previous studies that show the core of the [O  iii ] profile is a suitable surrogate for stellar velocity dispersion σ*, however there is evidence that the core experiences broadening that scales with outflow velocity. We find sufficient evidence that σ*, [O  iii ] core dispersion, and the non-gravitational outflow dispersion of the [O  iii ] profile form a plane whose fit results in a scatter of ∼0.1 dex. Finally, we discuss the implications, caveats, and recommendations when using the [O  iii ] dispersion as a surrogate for σ* for the M BH−σ* relation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have used the ratio of column densities derived independently from the 850- μ m continuum James Clerk Maxwell Telescope Plane Survey and the 13CO/C18O (J  = 3 → 2) Heterodyne Inner Milky Way Plane Survey to produce maps of the dense-gas mass fraction (DGMF) in two slices of the Galactic plane centred at ℓ = 30° and 40°. The observed DGMF is a metric for the instantaneous clump formation efficiency (CFE) in the molecular gas. We split the two fields into velocity components corresponding to the spiral arms that cross them, and a two-dimensional power-spectrum analysis of the spiral-arm DGMF maps reveals a break in slope at the approximate size scale of molecular clouds. We interpret this as the characteristic scale of the amplitude of variations in the CFE and a constraint on the dominant mechanism regulating the CFE and, hence, the star formation efficiency in CO-traced clouds. SN 2017hcc was remarkable for being a nearby and strongly polarized superluminous Type IIn supernova (SN). We obtained high-resolution Echelle spectra that we combine with other spectra to investigate its line-profile evolution. All epochs reveal narrow P Cygni components from pre-shock circumstellar material (CSM), indicating an axisymmetric outflow from the progenitor of 40–50 km s−1. Broad and intermediate-width components exhibit the classic evolution seen in luminous SNe IIn: symmetric Lorentzian profiles from pre-shock CSM lines broadened by electron scattering at early times, transitioning at late times to multicomponent, irregular profiles coming from the SN ejecta and post-shock shell. As in many SNe IIn, profiles show a progressively increasing blueshift, with a clear flux deficit in red wings of the intermediate and broad velocity components after day 200. This blueshift develops after the continuum luminosity fades, and in the intermediate-width component, persists at late times even after the SN ejecta fade. In SN 2017hcc, the blueshift cannot be explained as occultation by the SN photosphere, pre-shock acceleration of CSM, or a lopsided explosion of CSM. Instead, the blueshift arises from dust formation in the post-shock shell and in the SN ejecta. The effect has a wavelength dependence characteristic of dust, exhibiting an extinction law consistent with large grains. Thus, SN 2017hcc experienced post-shock dust formation and had a mildly bipolar CSM shell, similar to SN 2010jl. Like other superluminous SNe IIn, the progenitor lost around 10 M⊙ due to extreme eruptive mass-loss in the decade before exploding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NGC 5548 was recently monitored intensively from NIR to X-rays as part of the STORM campaign. Its disc emission was found to lag behind the observed X-rays, while the measured time lag was increasing with wavelength. These results are consistent with the assumption that short-term variability in AGN emission is driven by the X-ray illumination of the accretion disc. In this work, we studied the power spectrum of UV/optical and X-ray emission of NGC 5548, using the data of the STORM campaign as well as previous Swift data, in order to investigate the relation between the UV/optical and X-ray variability and to examine its consistency with the above picture. We demonstrate that even the power spectrum results are compatible with a standard disc being illuminated by X-rays, with low accretion rates, but the details are not entirely consistent with the results from the modelling of the 'τ versus λ' relation. The differences indicate that the inner disc might be covered by a 'warm corona' which does not allow the detection of UV/optical emission from the inner disc. We compile published spectroscopic data and [O  iii ] magnitudes of almost 500 extragalactic planetary nebulae (PNe) in 13 galaxies of various masses and morphological types. This is the first paper of a series that aims to analyse the PN populations and their progenitors in these galaxies. Although the samples are not complete or homogeneous, we obtain some first findings through the comparison of a few intensity line ratios and nebular parameters. We find that the ionized masses and the luminosities in H β, L H β, of around 30 objects previously identified as PNe indicate that they are most likely compact H  ii regions. We find an anticorrelation between the electron densities and the ionized masses in M 31, M 33, and NGC 300 that suggests that most of the PNe observed in these galaxies are probably ionization bounded. This trend is absent in LMC and SMC suggesting that many of their PNe are density bounded. The He  ii λ4686/H β values found in many PNe in LMC and some in M 33 and SMC are higher than in the other galaxies. Photoionization models predict that these high values can only be reached in density bounded PNe. We also find that the brightest PNe in the sample are not necessarily the youngest since there is no correlation between electron densities and the H β luminosities. The strong correlation found between L H β and |$L_{[\rm {O}\, \small {III}] }$| implies that the so far not understood cut-off of the planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF) based on [O  iii ] magnitudes can be investigated using L H β, a parameter much easier to study. The High Optical Resolution Spectrograph (HORuS) is a new high-resolution echelle spectrograph available on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). We report on the first HORuS observations of a transit of the super-Earth planet 55 Cnc e. We investigate the presence of Na  i and Hα in its transmission spectrum and explore the capabilities of HORuS for planetary transmission spectroscopy. Our methodology leads to residuals in the difference spectrum between the in-transit and out-of-transit spectra for the Na  i doublet lines of (3.4 ± 0.4) × 10−4, which sets an upper limit to the detection of line absorption from the planetary atmosphere that is one order of magnitude more stringent that those reported in the literature. We demonstrate that we are able to reach the photon-noise limit in the residual spectra using HORuS to a degree that we would be able to easily detect giant planets with larger atmospheres. In the last decade, ground-based high-resolution Doppler spectroscopy (HRS) has detected numerous species in transiting and non-transiting hot Jupiters, and is ideally placed for atmospheric characterization of warm Neptunes and super Earths. Many of these cooler and smaller exoplanets have shown cloudy atmospheres from low-resolution near-infrared observations, making constraints on chemical species difficult. We investigate how HRS can improve on these given its sensitivity to spectral line cores which probe higher altitudes above the clouds. We model transmission spectra for the warm Neptune GJ 3470b and determine the detectability of H2O with the CARMENES, GIANO, and SPIRou spectrographs. We also model a grid of spectra for another warm Neptune, GJ 436b, over a range of cloud-top pressure and H2O abundance. We show H2O is detectable for both planets with modest observational time and that the high H2O abundance-high cloud deck degeneracy is broken with HRS. However, meaningful constraints on abundance and cloud-top pressure are only possible in the high-metallicity scenario. We also show that detections of CH4 and NH3 are possible from cloudy models of GJ 436b. Lastly, we show how the presence of the Earth's transmission spectrum hinders the detection of H2O for the most cloudy scenarios given that telluric absorption overlaps with the strongest H2O features. We investigate the possibility to detect primordial non-Gaussianity by analysing the bulk of the probability distribution function (PDF) of late-time cosmic density fluctuations. For this purpose, we devise a new method to predict the impact of general non-Gaussian initial conditions on the late-time density PDF. At redshift z  = 1 and for a smoothing scale of 30 Mpc  h −1 our predictions agree with the high-resolution Quijote N -body simulations to |$\sim 0.2{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| precision. This is within cosmic variance of a ∼100(Gpc  h −1)3 survey volume. When restricting to this 30 Mpc  h −1 smoothing scale and to mildly non-linear densities (δ[30 Mpc  h −1] ∈ [−0.3, 0.4]) and also marginalizing over potential ignorance of the amplitude of the non-linear power spectrum an analysis of the PDF for such a survey volume can still measure the amplitude of different primordial bispectrum shapes to an accuracy of |$\Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{loc}} = \pm 7.4\ ,\ \Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{equi}} = \pm 22.0\ ,\ \Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{ortho}} = \pm 46.0$|⁠. When pushing to smaller scales and assuming a joint analysis of the PDF with smoothing radii of 30 and 15 Mpc  h −1 (δ[15 Mpc  h −1] ∈ [−0.4, 0.5]) this improves to |$\Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{loc}} = \pm 3.3\ ,\ \Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{equi}} = \pm 11.0\ ,\ \Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{ortho}} = \pm 17.0$| – even when marginalizing over the non-linear variances at both scales as two free parameters. Especially, such an analysis could simultaneously measure f NL and the amplitude and slope of the non-linear power spectrum. However, at 15 Mpc  h −1 our predictions are only accurate to |$\lesssim 0.8{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| for the considered density range. We discuss how this has to be improved in order to push to these small scales and make full use of upcoming surveys with a PDF-based analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The advent of new time domain surveys and the imminent increase in astronomical data expose the shortcomings of traditional time series analysis (such as power spectra analysis) in characterizing the abundantly varied, complex, and stochastic light curves of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). Recent applications of novel methods from non-linear dynamics have shown promise in characterizing higher modes of variability and time-scales in AGN. Recurrence analysis in particular can provide complementary information about characteristic time-scales revealed by other methods, as well as probe the nature of the underlying physics in these objects. Recurrence analysis was developed to study dynamical trajectories in phase space, which can be constructed from 1D time series such as light curves. We apply the methods of recurrence analysis to two optical light curves of Kepler -monitored AGN. We confirm the detection and period of an optical quasi-periodic oscillation in one AGN, and confirm multiple other time-scales recovered from other methods ranging from 5 to 60 d in both objects. We detect regions in the light curves that deviate from regularity, provide evidence of determinism and non-linearity in the mechanisms underlying one light curve (KIC 9650712), and determine realizations of a linear stochastic process describe the dominant variability in the other light curve (Zwicky 229–015). Recently, we demonstrated how an astrophotonic light reformatting device, based on a multicore fibre photonic lantern and a 3D waveguide component, can be used to efficiently reformat the point spread function of a telescope to a diffraction-limited pseudo-slit. Here, we demonstrate how such a device can also efficiently mitigate modal noise – a potential source of instability in high-resolution multimode fibre-fed spectrographs. To investigate the modal noise performance of the photonic reformatter, we have used it to feed light into a bench-top near-infrared spectrograph (R ≈ 7000, λ ≈ 1550 nm). One approach to quantifying the modal noise involved the use of broad-band excitation light and a statistical analysis of how the overall measured spectrum was affected by variations in the input coupling conditions. This approach indicated that the photonic reformatter could reduce modal noise by a factor of 6 when compared to a multimode fibre with a similar number of guided modes. Another approach to quantifying the modal noise involved the use of multiple spectrally narrow lines, and an analysis of how the measured barycentres of these lines were affected by variations in the input coupling. Using this approach, the photonic reformatter was observed to suppress modal noise to the level necessary to obtain spectra with stability close to that observed when using a single mode fibre feed. These results demonstrate the potential of using photonic reformatters to enable efficient multimode spectrographs that operate at the diffraction-limit and are free of modal noise, with potential applications including radial velocity measurements of M-dwarfs. We study the late-time evolution of the central regions of two Milky Way (MW)-like simulations of galaxies formed in a cosmological context, one hosting a fast bar and the other a slow one. We find that bar length, R b, measurements fluctuate on a dynamical time-scale by up to 100 per cent, depending on the spiral structure strength and measurement threshold. The bar amplitude oscillates by about 15 per cent, correlating with R b. The Tremaine–Weinberg method estimates of the bars' instantaneous pattern speeds show variations around the mean of up to |$\sim \!20{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠ , typically anticorrelating with the bar length and strength. Through power spectrum analyses, we establish that these bar pulsations, with a period in the range ∼60–200 Myr, result from its interaction with multiple spiral modes, which are coupled with the bar. Because of the presence of odd spiral modes, the two bar halves typically do not connect at exactly the same time to a spiral arm, and their individual lengths can be significantly offset. We estimated that in about 50 per cent of bar measurements in MW-mass external galaxies, the bar lengths of SBab-type galaxies are overestimated by |$\sim \!15{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| and those of SBbc types by |$\sim \!55{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠. Consequently, bars longer than their corotation radius reported in the literature, dubbed 'ultrafast bars', may simply correspond to the largest biases. Given that the Scutum–Centaurus arm is likely connected to the near half of the MW bar, recent direct measurements may be overestimating its length by 1–1.5 kpc, while its present pattern speed may be 5–10  |$\rm km\ s^{-1}\ kpc^{-1}$| smaller than its time-averaged value. We provide a detailed description of the Herschel /SPIRE Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) Spectral Feature Finder (FF). The FF is an automated process designed to extract significant spectral features from SPIRE FTS data products. Optimizing the number of features found in SPIRE-FTS spectra is challenging. The wide SPIRE-FTS frequency range (447–1568 GHz) leads to many molecular species and atomic fine structure lines falling within the observed bands. As the best spectral resolution of the SPIRE-FTS is ∼1.2 GHz, there can be significant line blending, depending on the source type. In order to find, both efficiently and reliably, features in spectra associated with a wide range of sources, the FF iteratively searches for peaks over a number of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) thresholds. For each threshold, newly identified features are rigorously checked before being added to the fitting model. At the end of each iteration, the FF simultaneously fits the continuum and features found, with the resulting residual spectrum used in the next iteration. The final FF products report the frequency of the features found and the associated SNRs. Line flux determination is not included as part of the FF products, as extracting reliable line flux from SPIRE-FTS data is a complex process that requires careful evaluation and analysis of the spectra on a case-by-case basis. The FF results are 100 per cent complete for features with SNR greater than 10 and 50–70 per cent complete at SNR of 5. The determination of the fundamental properties (mass, separation, age, gravity, and atmospheric properties) of brown dwarf companions allows us to infer crucial informations on their formation and evolution mechanisms. Spectroscopy of substellar companions is available to date only for a limited number of objects (and mostly at very low resolution, R  < 50) because of technical limitations, i.e. contrast and angular resolution. We present medium resolution (R  = 350), coronagraphic long-slit spectroscopic observations with SPHERE of two substellar companions, HD 1160 B and HD 19467 B. We found that HD 1160 B has a peculiar spectrum that cannot be fitted by spectra in current spectral libraries. A good fit is possible only considering separately the Y + J and the H spectral band. The spectral type is between M5 and M7. We also estimated a T eff of 2800–2900 K and a log  g of 3.5–4.0 dex. The low surface gravity seems to favour young age (10–20 Myr) and low mass (∼20 MJup ) for this object. HD 19467 B is instead a fully evolved object with a T eff of ∼1000 K and log  g of ∼5.0 dex. The Supernova Cosmology Project has conducted the 'See Change' programme, aimed at discovering and observing high-redshift (1.13 ≤ z ≤ 1.75) Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). We used multifilter Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of massive galaxy clusters with sufficient cadence to make the observed SN Ia light curves suitable for a cosmological probe of dark energy at z > 0.5. This See Change sample of SNe Ia with multi-colour light curves will be the largest to date at these redshifts. As part of the See Change programme, we obtained ground-based spectroscopy of each discovered transient and/or its host galaxy. Here, we present Very Large Telescope (VLT) spectra of See Change transient host galaxies, deriving their redshifts, and host parameters such as stellar mass and star formation rate. Of the 39 See Change transients/hosts that were observed with the VLT, we successfully determined the redshift for 26, including 15 SNe Ia at z > 0.97. We show that even in passive environments, it is possible to recover secure redshifts for the majority of SN hosts out to z  = 1.5. We find that with typical exposure times of 3−4 h on an 8-m-class telescope we can recover ∼75 per cent of SN Ia redshifts in the range of 0.97 < z < 1.5. Furthermore, we show that the combination of HST photometry and VLT spectroscopy is able to provide estimates of host galaxy stellar mass that are sufficiently accurate for use in a mass-step correction in the cosmological analysis. Multiple tracers of the same surveyed volume can enhance the signal-to-noise on a measurement of local primordial non-Gaussianity and the relativistic projections. Increasing the number of tracers comparably increases the number of shot noise terms required to describe the stochasticity of the data. Although the shot noise is white on large scales, it is desirable to investigate the extent to which it can degrade constraints on the parameters of interest. In a multitracer analysis of the power spectrum, a marginalization over shot noise does not degrade the constraints on f NL by more than ∼30 per cent so long as haloes of mass |$M\lesssim 10^{12}\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$| are resolved. However, ignoring cross shot noise terms induces large systematics on a measurement of f NL at redshift z < 1 when small mass haloes are resolved. These effects are less severe for the relativistic projections, especially for the dipole term. In the case of a low and high mass tracer, the optimal sample division maximizes the signal-to-noise on f NL and the projection effects simultaneously, reducing the errors to the level of ∼10 consecutive mass bins of equal number density. We also emphasize that the non-Poissonian noise corrections that arise from small-scale clustering effects cannot be measured with random dilutions of the data. Dwarfs are the largest population of galaxies in number in the nearby Universe. Deep spectroscopic data are still missing to obtain a better understanding of their formation and evolution processes. This study shows the results obtained from a spectroscopic campaign in the Perseus cluster. We have obtained 963 new galaxy spectra. We have measured the recessional velocity of the galaxies by using a cross-correlation technique. These data have been used to obtain the cluster membership, the dynamics of the galaxies, and the spectroscopic luminosity function (LF) of the cluster. The cluster membership was obtained by using the peak + gap technique, reporting a total of 403 galaxies as cluster members within 1.4 r 200. The mean velocity and velocity dispersion of the cluster galaxies are V c = 5258 km s−1 and σc = 1040 km s−1, respectively. We obtained M 200 = 1.2 × 1015 M⊙ and r 200 = 2.2 Mpc for this cluster. The clusters members were classified blue and red according to their g − r stellar colour. The velocity dispersion of these two families of galaxies is different, indicating that the blue galaxies can be classified as recently accreted into the cluster. We present the spectroscopic galaxy LF of the cluster. This function turned to be flat: α = 0.99 ± 0.06. In addition, blue and red galaxies show similar densities in the faint end of the LF. This indicates that Perseus does not have a population of red dwarf galaxias as large as other nearby clusters. We have compared the LF of the Perseus cluster with other spectroscopic LFs of nearby clusters and those from cosmological simulations. If γ Dor-type pulsations are driven by the convective blocking mechanism, a convective envelope at a sufficient depth is essential. There are several hot γ Dor and hybrid star candidates in which there should not be an adequate convective envelope to excite the γ Dor-type oscillations. The existence of these hot objects needs an explanation. Therefore, we selected, observed, and studied 24 hot γ Dor and hybrid candidates to investigate their properties. The atmospheric parameters, chemical abundances, and v sin  i  values of the candidates were obtained using medium-resolution (R   =  46 000) spectra taken with the Fibre-fed Échelle Spectrograph instrument mounted at the Nordic Optical Telescope. We also carried out frequency analyses of the Kepler long- and short-cadence data to determine the exact pulsation contents. We found only five bona fide hot γ Dor and three bona fide hot hybrid stars in our sample. The other 16 stars were found to be normal γ Dor, δ Sct, or hybrid variables. No chemical peculiarity was detected in the spectra of the bona fide hot γ Dor and hybrid stars. We investigated the interplay between rotation and pulsational modes. We also found that the hot γ Dor stars have higher Gaia luminosities and larger radii compared to main-sequence A–F stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Only about 19 Galactic and 25 extragalactic bonafide luminous blue variables (LBVs) are known to date. This incomplete census prevents our understanding of this crucial phase of massive star evolution which leads to the formation of heavy binary black holes via the classical channel. With large samples of LBVs one could better determine the duration and maximum stellar luminosity which characterize this phase. We search for candidate LBVs (cLBVs) in a new galaxy, NGC 7793. For this purpose, we combine high spatial resolution images from two Hubble Space Telescope (HST) programs with optical spectroscopy from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE). By combining PSF-fitting photometry measured on F547M, F657N, and F814W images, with restrictions on point-like appearance (at HST resolution) and H α luminosity, we find 100 potential cLBVs, 36 of which fall in the MUSE fields. Five of the latter 36 sources are promising cLBVs which have MV ≤ −7 and a combination of: H α with a P-Cygni profile; no [O  i ] |$\, \lambda 6300$| emission; weak or no [O  iii ] |$\, \lambda 5007$| emission; large [N  ii ]/H α relative to H  ii regions; and [S  ii ] |$\, \lambda 6716$| /[S  ii ] |$\, \lambda 6731\sim 1$|⁠. It is not clear if these five cLBVs are isolated from O-type stars, which would favour the binary formation scenario of LBVs. Our study, which approximately covers one fourth of the optical disc of NGC 7793, demonstrates how by combining the above HST  surveys with multi-object spectroscopy from 8-m class telescopes, one can efficiently find large samples of cLBVs in nearby galaxies. In the framework of an ongoing project aimed at searching for and studying eXtremely Metal-Poor (XMP) very gas-rich blue dwarfs in nearby voids, we conducted spectroscopy with the 11-m Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) of 26 candidates, preselected in the first paper of this series (PEPK19). For 23 of them, we detected oxygen lines, allowing us to estimate the gas O/H ratio. For 10 of them, the oxygen abundance is found to be very low, in the range of 12 + log (O/H) = 6.95–7.30 dex. Of those, four void dwarfs have 12 + log (O/H) < 7.19, or Z < Z⊙/30. For the majority of observed galaxies, the faint line [O  iii ] λ4363 Å used to estimate O/H with the direct T e method appeared either too noisy or was not detected. We therefore use the semi-empirical method of Izotov & Thuan for these spectra, or, when applicable, the new 'Strong line' method of Izotov et al. We present and discuss the results for all void dwarfs observed in this work. We also compare their O/H values with O/H values of ∼140 void galaxies available from our recent papers. We address the properties of the newly found unusual void XMP dwarfs and compare them with those for 10 known prototype void XMP objects. The latter small group is outstanding based on their very small mass fraction of stars (only 0.01–0.02 of the baryonic mass), the blue colours of stars in the outer body indicating a non-cosmological age for the main star-forming episode), and the low gas metallicity (several times lower than expected for their luminosity). We present 637 low-redshift optical spectra collected by the Berkeley Supernova Ia Program (BSNIP) between 2009 and 2018, almost entirely with the Kast double spectrograph on the Shane 3 m telescope at Lick Observatory. We describe our automated spectral classification scheme and arrive at a final set of 626 spectra (of 242 objects) that are unambiguously classified as belonging to Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). Of these, 70 spectra of 30 objects are classified as spectroscopically peculiar (i.e. not matching the spectral signatures of 'normal' SNe Ia) and 79 SNe Ia (covered by 328 spectra) have complementary photometric coverage. The median SN in our final set has one epoch of spectroscopy, has a redshift of 0.0208 (with a low of 0.0007 and high of 0.1921), and is first observed spectroscopically 1.1 d after maximum light. The constituent spectra are of high quality, with a median signal-to-noise ratio of 31.8 pixel−1, and have broad wavelength coverage, with |$\sim\! 95{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| covering at least 3700–9800 Å. We analyse our data set, focusing on quantitative measurements (e.g. velocities, pseudo-equivalent widths) of the evolution of prominent spectral features in the available early-time and late-time spectra. We present the results of X-ray spectral-timing analysis of a 90 ks XMM–Newton observation of the nearby, broad-line, early-type AGN NGC5273. The X-ray spectrum revealed the clear presence of a reflection component at high energies, with a clear signature of a narrow iron line at 6.4 keV, consistent with distant reflection. Applying a relativistic reflection model, we found only marginal evidence for a broader relativistic line component. However, cross-spectral analysis revealed that, between 4 and 6 × 10−4 Hz, the 5–8 keV band lagged the 2–3 keV band, implying reflection of the iron line from material close to the black hole. From the analysis of the lag-energy spectrum, we found a broad, but skewed line with a peak of ≈1000 s at 7.5 keV relative to the continuum, which we interpret as the iron line in the reverberation spectrum from an illuminated accretion disc. From the asymmetry in the shape of lag-energy spectrum, we also found that the source is consistent with having an inclination ≥45°. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is generally assumed that coupling between the turbulent flow and the magnetic field at the top of the Sun's convection zone leads to a Kolmogorov cascade of kinetic to magnetic energy. An inertial range and a slope value close to −5/3 have been recognized in a log–log diagram of power spectral density versus frequency (or period). However, published values of the slope have large uncertainties and the inertial period range is limited to 0.1 s to 2 yr. We have applied an adapted version of the singular spectrum analysis (SSA) method to the series of (quasi-) daily sunspot numbers ISSN (an indirect way of monitoring solar activity) from 1868 to 2019. The log–log diagram of ISSN variance of SSA components versus frequency displays an inertial slope value of −1.66 ± 0.16 and an inertial range from about 4 to 100 yr. This is consistent with the existence of Kolmogorov turbulent behaviour in the Sun's convection zone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The high-resolution (⁠|$R\sim 48\, 000$|⁠) optical spectrum of the B-type supergiant LS 5112, identified as the optical counterpart of the post-AGB candidate IRAS 18379–1707 is analysed. We report the detailed identifications of the observed absorption and emission features in the wavelength range 3700–9200 Å for the first time. The absorption line spectrum has been analysed using non-LTE model atmosphere techniques to determine stellar atmospheric parameters and chemical composition. We estimate T eff = 18 000 ± 1000 K, log  g  = 2.25 ± 0.08, ξt = 10 ± 4 km s−1, and v sin  i  = 37 ± 6 km s−1, and the derived abundances indicate a metal-deficient ([M/H] ≈ −0.6) post-AGB star. Chemical abundances of eight different elements were obtained. The estimates of the CNO abundances in IRAS 18379–1707 indicate that these elements are overabundant with [(C + N + O)/S] = + 0.5 ± 0.2 suggesting that the products of helium burning have been brought to the surface as a result of third dredge-up on the AGB. From the absorption lines, we derived heliocentric radial velocity of V r = −124.0 ± 0.4 km s−1. We have identified permitted emission lines of O  i , N  i , Na  i , S  ii , Si  ii , C  ii , Mg  ii , and Fe  iii. The nebula forbidden lines of [N  i ], [O  i ], [Fe  ii ], [N  ii ], [S  ii ], [Ni  ii ], and [Cr  ii ] have also been identified. The Balmer lines H α, H β, and H γ show P-Cygni behaviour clearly indicating post-AGB mass-loss process in the object with the wind velocity up to 170 km s−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose a new analysis methodology – FourIEr phase SpecTrum Analysis (FIESTA, or |$\mathit {\Phi }$| ESTA) – for the study of spectral line profile variability in Fourier space. The philosophy of |$\mathit {\Phi }$| ESTA is highlighted in its interpretation of a line deformation as various shifts of the composing Fourier modes. With this ability, |$\mathit {\Phi }$| ESTA excels in distinguishing the effects of a bulk shift in a line profile, from changes in a line profile shape. In other words, it can distinguish a radial velocity shift due to orbiting companions like planets, from an apparent radial velocity shift due to stellar variability (often referred to as 'jitter'). Most importantly, it can quantify the radial velocity impact of stellar jitter on each epoch. Our simulations show that (compared to a model that does not account for stellar activity), |$\mathit {\Phi }$| ESTA can almost triple the fraction of planets recovered with orbital parameters measured to within 10 per cent of their input parameters, when extracting a 2 m s−1 amplitude planetary signal in the midst of ∼2 m s−1 amplitude starspot jitter for high signal-to-noise ratio (>200 pixel−1) data. |$\mathit {\Phi }$| ESTA can also be used to identify stellar activity related periods in a periodogram analysis and classify relative amplitudes of stellar jitter and planetary signals, with examples for the analysis of HARPS data of the active star HD 224789 and the active planet-host star HD 103720. In the end, we demonstrate that |$\mathit {\Phi }$| ESTA's framework is working as well as other activity indicators in correlating with stellar jitter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The centaur (2060) Chiron exhibits outgassing behaviour and possibly hosts a ring system. On 2011 November 29, Chiron occulted a fairly bright star (R  ∼ 15 mag) as observed from the 3-m NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) on Mauna Kea and the 2-m Faulkes Telescope North (FTN) at Haleakala. Data were taken as visible wavelength images and simultaneous, low-resolution, near-infrared (NIR) spectra. Here, we present a detailed examination of the light-curve features in the optical data and an analysis of the NIR spectra. We place a lower limit on the spherical diameter of Chiron's nucleus of 160.2 ± 1.3 km. Sharp, narrow dips were observed between 280 and 360 km from the centre (depending on event geometry). For a central chord and assumed ring plane, the separated features are 298.5–302 and 308–310.5 km from the nucleus, with normal optical depth ∼0.5–0.9, and a gap of 9.1 ± 1.3 km. These features are similar in equivalent depth to Chariklo's inner ring. The absence of absorbing/scattering material near the nucleus suggests that these sharp dips are more likely to be planar rings than a shell of material. The region of relatively increased transmission is within the 1:2 spin-orbit resonance, consistent with the proposed clearing pattern for a non-axisymmetric nucleus. Characteristics of possible azimuthally incomplete features are presented, which could be transient, as well as a possible shell from ∼900–1500 km: future observations are needed for confirmation. There are no significant features in the NIR light curves, nor any correlation between optical features and NIR spectral slope. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A non-local-thermodynamic-equilibrium level population model of the first and second ionization stages of iron, nickel, and cobalt is used to fit a sample of XShooter optical + near-infrared (NIR) spectra of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). From the ratio of the NIR lines to the optical lines limits can be placed on the temperature and density of the emission region. We find a similar evolution of these parameters across our sample. Using the evolution of the Fe  ii 12 570 –7155 Å  line as a prior in fits of spectra covering only the optical wavelengths we show that the 7200 Å  feature is fully explained by [Fe  ii ] and [Ni  ii ] alone. This approach allows us to determine the abundance of Ni  ii /Fe  ii for a large sample of 130 optical spectra of 58 SNe Ia with uncertainties small enough to distinguish between Chandrasekhar mass (M Ch) and sub-Chandrasekhar mass (sub- M Ch) explosion models. We conclude that the majority (85 per cent) of normal SNe Ia have a Ni/Fe abundance that is in agreement with predictions of sub- M Ch explosion simulations of ∼ Z ⊙ progenitors. Only a small fraction (11 per cent) of objects in the sample have a Ni/Fe abundance in agreement with M Ch explosion models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
