Search

A superbubble is a hot, dilute, and X-ray-emitting gas cavity produced by stellar winds and supernova explosions. It is an intriguing feature for the study of stellar feedback processes. We report a study of possible superbubbles in the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). We identify one out of 83 extended sources as a strong superbubble candidate, SB1, from the M31 X-ray source catalogue. SB1 is located in the northern disc of M31 and exhibits soft, extended X-ray emission surrounded by an Hα shell. The XMM–Newton spectral analysis reveals that SB1 has a temperature of ∼0.14 keV and an X-ray luminosity of |$L_{\rm X}\sim 3.5\times 10^{37}\,{\rm erg\, s}^{-1}$| in the 0.3–10.0 keV band. Two stellar clusters are found at the west rim of SB1. The estimated age of SB1 is similar to that of an overlapping young stellar cluster, and the colour-magnitude diagram reveals the presence of young stellar objects with an age of less than 10 Myr. We propose that SB1 is a superbubble, likely having triggered star formation in this cluster by compressing the accumulated gas, thereby leading to the formation of gas-dense regions. MACS J0600.1-2008 (MACS0600) is an X-ray-luminous, massive galaxy cluster at |$z_{\mathrm{d}}=0.43$|⁠ , studied previously by the REionization LensIng Cluster Survey and ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey projects which revealed a complex, bimodal mass distribution and an intriguing high-redshift object behind it. Here, we report on the results of a combined analysis of the extended strong lensing (SL), X-ray, Sunyaev–Zeldovich (SZ), and galaxy luminosity-density properties of this system. Using new JWST and ground-based Gemini-N and Keck data, we obtain 13 new spectroscopic redshifts of multiply-imaged galaxies and identify 12 new photometric multiple-image systems and candidates, including two multiply-imaged |$z\sim 7$| objects. Taking advantage of the larger areal coverage, our analysis reveals an additional bimodal, massive SL structure which we measure spectroscopically to lie adjacent to the cluster and whose existence was implied by previous SL-modelling analyses. While based in part on photometric systems identified in ground-based imaging requiring further verification, our extended SL model suggests that the cluster may have the second-largest critical area and effective Einstein radius observed to date, |$A_{\mathrm{crit}}\simeq 2.16\, \mathrm{arcmin}^2$| and |$\theta _{\mathrm{E}}=49.7^{\prime \prime }\pm 5.0^{\prime \prime }$| for a source at |$z_{\mathrm{s}}=2$|⁠ , enclosing a total mass of |$M(\lt \theta _{\mathrm{E}})=(4.7\pm 0.7)\times 10^{14}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$|⁠. These results are also supported by the galaxy luminosity distribution, and the SZ and X-ray data. Yet another, probably related massive cluster structure, discovered in X-rays 5 arcmin (1.7 Mpc) further north, suggests that MACS0600 is part of an even larger filamentary structure. This discovery adds to several recent detections of massive structures around SL galaxy clusters and establishes MACS0600 as a prime target for future high-redshift surveys with JWST. We use Dark Energy Survey Year 3 (DES Y3) clusters with archival XMM–Newton and Chandra X-ray data to assess the centring performance of the redMaPPer cluster finder and to measure key richness observable scaling relations. We find that 10–20 per cent of redMaPPer clusters are miscentred, both when comparing to the X-ray peak position and to the visually identified central cluster galaxy. We find no significant difference in miscentring in bins of low versus high richness or redshift. The dominant reasons for miscentring include masked or missing data and the presence of other bright galaxies in the cluster. For half of the miscentred clusters, the correct central was one of the possible centrals identified by redMaPPer, while for ∼40 per cent of miscentred clusters, the correct central is not a redMaPPer member mostly due to masking. Additionally, we fit scaling relations of X-ray temperature and luminosity with richness. We find a T X–λ scatter of |$0.21\pm 0.01$|⁠. While the scatter in T X–λ is consistent in redshift bins, we find modestly different slopes, with high-redshift clusters displaying a somewhat shallower relation. Splitting based on richness, we find a marginally larger scatter for our lowest richness bin, 20 < λ < 40. We note that the robustness of the scaling relations at lower richnesses is limited by the unknown selection function, but at λ > 75, we detect nearly all of the clusters falling within existing X-ray pointings. We report on Chandra X-ray observations of SN 2016jae and SN 2018cqj, both low-luminosity Type Ia supernova (SN) that showed the presence of an H line in their early optical spectrum. No X-ray emission is detected at the location of either SN. Upper limits to the luminosity of up to 2 |$\times 10^{40}$|  erg s |$^{-1}$| are calculated for each SN, depending on the assumed spectral model, temperature, and column density. This luminosity is comparable to that of another low-luminosity Type Ia SN, SN 2018fhw, that was observed with Chandra. It is generally lower than upper limits calculated for Type Ia-CSM SNe observed in X-rays, and also below that of SN 2012ca, the only Type Ia-CSM SN to have been detected in X-rays. Comparisons are made to other Type Ia SN with an H line observed in X-rays. The observations suggest that while the density into which the SN is expanding may have been high at the time the H |$\alpha$| line was detected, it had decreased considerably by the time of X-ray observations. Utilizing four archival X-ray data sets taken with the Hard X-ray Detector onboard Suzaku , timing studies were performed on three magnetars, 1E 1841−045 (observed in 2006), SGR 0501+4516 (2008), and 1RXS J170849.0−400910 (2009 and 2010). Their pulsations were reconfirmed, typically in an energy range of 12–50 keV. The 11.783 s pulses of 1E 1841−045 and those of SGR 0501+4516 at 5.762 s were periodically phase modulated, with a long period of |$\approx 23.4$| and |$\approx 16.4$|  ks, respectively. The pulse-phase modulation was also observed, at |$\approx 46.5$|  ks, from two data sets of 1RXS J170849.0−400910. In all these cases, the modulation amplitude was 6 per cent to 16 per cent of the pulse cycle. Including previously confirmed four objects, this characteristic timing behaviour is now detected from seven magnetars in total, and interpreted as a result of free precession of neutron stars that are deformed to an asphericity of |$\sim 10^{-4}$|⁠. Assuming that the deformation is due to magnetic stress, these magnetars are inferred to harbour toroidal magnetic fields of |$B_{\rm t}\sim 10^{16}$|  G. By comparing the estimated |$B_{\rm t}$| of these objects with their poloidal dipole field |$B_{\rm d}$|⁠ , the |$B_{\rm t}/B_{\rm d}$| ratio is found to increase with their characteristic age. Therefore, the toroidal fields of magnetars are likely to last longer than their poloidal fields. This explains the presence of some classes of neutron stars that have relatively weak |$B_{\rm d}$| but are suspected to hide strong |$B_{\rm t}$| inside them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present analyses of Suzaku XIS light curves and spectra of the BL Lac object OJ 287 with observations positioned primarily around proposed recurrent optical outbursts. The first two observations were performed in 2007 April 10–13 (epoch 1) and 2007 November 7–9 (epoch 2) that, respectively, correspond to a low and a high optical state and which, within the binary supermassive black hole model for OJ 287, precede and follow the impact flare. The last three observations, made consecutively during 2015 May 3–9 (epoch 3), were during the post-impact state of the 2013 disc impact and are the longest continuous X-ray observation of OJ 287 taken before the optical outburst in 2015 December. Intraday variability is found in both the soft (0.5–2 keV) and hard (2–10 keV) bands. The discrete correction function analysis of the light curves in both bands peaks at zero lag during epochs 2 and 3, indicating that the emission in both bands was cospatial and emitted from the same population of leptons. Power spectral densities of all three light curves are red noise dominated, with a rather wide range of power spectrum slopes. These X-ray spectra are overall consistent with power laws but with significantly different spectral indices. In the 2015 observations the X-ray spectrum softens during the flare, showing an obvious soft X-ray excess that was not evident in the 2007 observations. We discuss the implications of these observations on the jet, the possible accretion disc, and the binary supermassive black hole model proposed for the nearly periodic optical flaring of OJ 287. We adopt a Bayesian X-ray spectral approach to investigate the accretion properties of unobscured (⁠|$20\lt \log (N_{\rm H}/{\rm cm}^{-2}\lt 22$|⁠) and obscured (⁠|$22\lt \log (N_{\rm H}/{\rm cm}^{-2}\lt 24$|⁠) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to shed light on the orientation versus evolution scenarios for the origin of the obscuring material. For a sample of 3882 X-ray-selected AGN from the Chandra COSMOS Legacy, AEGIS, and CDFS extragalactic surveys, we constrain their stellar masses, |$M_\star$|⁠ , intrinsic X-ray luminosities, |$L_{\rm X}$|⁠ , obscuring column densities, |$N_{\rm H}$|⁠ , and specific accretion rates |$\lambda \propto L_{\rm X}/M_\star$|⁠. By combining these observables within a Bayesian non-parametric approach, we infer, for the first time, the specific accretion rate distribution (SARD) of obscured and unobscured AGN to |$z\approx 3$|⁠ , i.e. the probability of a galaxy with mass |$M_\star$| at redshift z hosting an AGN with column density |$N_{\rm H}$| and specific accretion rate |$\lambda$|⁠. Our findings indicate that (1) both obscured and unobscured SARDs share similar shapes, shifting towards higher accretion rates with redshift, (2) unobscured SARDs exhibit a systematic offset towards higher |$\lambda$| compared to obscured SARD for all redshift intervals, (3) the obscured AGN fraction declines sharply at |$\log \lambda _{\rm break} \sim -2$| for |$z \lt 0.5$|⁠ , but shifts to higher |$\lambda$| values with increasing redshift, (4) the incidence of AGN within the theoretically unstable blow-out region of the |$\lambda -N_{\rm H}$| plane increases with redshift. These observations provide compelling evidence for AGN 'downsizing' and radiation-regulated nuclear-scale obscuration with an increasing host galaxy contribution towards higher redshifts. We present an analysis of high-dispersion spectroscopic observations of the symbiotic system R Aquarii (R Aqr) obtained with the Manchester Echelle Spectrograph at the 2.1-m telescope of the San Pedro Mártir Observatory (Mexico) in conjunction with available narrow-band images. The data are interpreted by means of the shape software to disclose the morpho-kinematics of the nebulosities associated with R Aqr. The model that best reproduces narrow-band images and position–velocity diagrams consists of three structures: an outer (large) hourglass structure surrounding an inner bipolar with a spiral-like filament entwined around the latter. The expansion velocity pattern of each structure is defined by different homologous expansion laws, which correspond to kinematic ages of |$\tau _1$|  = 450 |$\pm$|  25 yr (outer hourglass), |$\tau _2$|  = 270 |$\pm$|  20 yr (inner bipolar), and |$\tau _3$|  = 285 |$\pm$|  20 yr (spiral-like filament). We suggest that the spiral-like filament is tracing the regions of the interaction of a precessing jet with the circumstellar material, which simultaneously carves the inner bipolar structure. If a similar process created the large hourglass structure, it means that the action of the jet ceased for about 170 yr. We have investigated whether the lack of X-ray pulsations from most neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) could be due to the extension of their inner disc to the NS surface. To estimate the inner disc radii, we have employed the model, recently proposed to account for the torque reversals of LMXBs. In this model, the inner disc radius depends on the spin period as well as the dipole moment and the mass inflow rate of the disc. Our model results indicate that most LMXBs have mass accretion rates above the minimum critical rates required for the inner disc to reach down to the NS surface and thereby quench the pulsed X-ray emission. For most sources X-ray pulsations are allowed when the period decreases below a certain critical value. For the same parameters, the model is also consistent with the observed X-ray luminosity ranges of the individual accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars (AMXPs). The paucity of AMXPs compared to the majority population of non-pulsing LMXBs is explained, as well as the fact that AMXPs are transient sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, we present the results of a detailed X-ray spectral analysis of the brightest active galactic nuclei (AGNs) detected in the XMM–Newton 1.75 Ms Ultra Narrow Deep Field. We analysed 23 AGNs that have a luminosity range of |$\sim 10^{42} {\!-\!} 10^{46}\, \rm {erg}\, \rm {s}^{-1}$| in the |$2 {\!-\!} 10\, \rm {keV}$| energy band, redshifts up to 2.66, and |$\sim 10\,000$| X-ray photon counts in the |$0.3{ \!-\! }10\, \rm {keV}$| energy band. Our analysis confirms the 'Iwasawa – Taniguchi effect,' an anticorrelation between the X-ray luminosity (⁠|$L_x$|⁠) and the Fe – k |$\alpha$| equivalent width (⁠|${\rm EW}_{\rm Fe}$|⁠) possibly associated with the decreasing of the torus covering factor as the AGN luminosity increases. We investigated the relationship among black hole mass (⁠|$M_{\rm BH}$|⁠), |$L_x$|⁠ , and X-ray variability, quantified by the Normalized Excess Variance (⁠|$\sigma ^2_{\rm rms}$|⁠). Our analysis suggest an anticorrelation in both |$M_{\rm BH} - \sigma ^2_{\rm rms}$| and |$L_x- \sigma ^2_{\rm rms}$| relations. The first is described as |$\sigma ^2_{\rm rms} \propto M^{-0.26 \pm 0.05}_{\rm BH}$|⁠ , while the second presents a similar trend with |$\sigma ^2_{\rm rms} \propto L_{x}^{-0.31 \pm 0.04}$|⁠. These results support the idea that the luminosity – variability anticorrelation is a byproduct of an intrinsic relationship between the BH mass and the X-ray variability, through the size of the emitting region. Finally, we found a strong correlation among the Eddington ratio (⁠|$\lambda _{\rm Edd}$|⁠), the hard X-ray photon index (⁠|$\Gamma$|⁠), and the illumination factor |$\log (A)$|⁠ , which is related to the ratio between the number of Compton scattered photons and the number of seed photons. Supermassive black holes disrupt passing stars, producing outbursts called tidal disruption events (TDEs). TDEs have recently gained attention due to their unique dynamics and emission processes, which are still not fully understood. Especially, the so-called optical TDEs are of interest as they often exhibit delayed or obscured X-ray emission from the accretion disc, making the origin of the prompt emission unclear. In this paper, we present multiband optical polarization observations and optical spectrometry of a recent TDE candidate AT 2022fpx, alongside monitoring observations in optical, ultraviolet, and X-rays. The optical spectra of AT 2022fpx show Bowen fluorescence as well as highly ionized iron emission lines, which are characteristic of extreme coronal line emitters. Additionally, the source exhibits variable but low-polarized continuum emission at the outburst peak, with a clear rotation of the polarization angle. X-ray emission observed approximately 250 d after the outburst peak in the decay appear flare-like but is consistent with constant temperature blackbody emission. The overall outburst decay is slower than for typical TDEs, and resembles more the ones seen from Bowen fluorescence flares. These observations suggest that AT 2022fpx could be a key source in linking different long-lived TDE scenarios. Its unique characteristics, such as extreme coronal line emission, variable polarization, and delayed X-ray flare, can be attributed to the outer shock scenario or a clumpy torus surrounding the supermassive black hole. Further studies, especially in the context of multiwavelength observations, are crucial to fully understand the dynamics and emission mechanisms of these intriguing astrophysical events. We present new calculations of atomic data needed to model auto-ionizing states of Fe  xvi. We compare the state energies, radiative and excitation data with a sample of results from previous literature. We find a large scatter of results, the most significant ones in the auto-ionization rates, which are very sensitive to the configuration interaction and state mixing. We find relatively good agreement between the auto-ionization rates and the collisional excitation rates calculated with the R -matrix suite of programs and autostructure. The largest model, which includes J -resolved states up to |$n=10$|⁠ , produces ab-initio wavelengths and intensities of the satellite lines which agree well with solar high-resolution spectra of active regions, with few minor wavelength adjustments. We review previous literature, finding many incorrect identifications, most notably those in the NIST data base. We provide several new tentative identifications in the 15–15.7 Å range, and several new ones at shorter wavelengths, where previous lines were unidentified. Compared to the previous CHIANTI model, the present one has an increased flux in the 15–15.7 Å range at 2 MK of a factor of 1.9, resolving the discrepancies found in the analysis of the Marshall Grazing Incidence X-Ray Spectrometer observation. It appears that the satellite lines also resolve the long-standing discrepancy in the intensity of the important Fe  xvii 3D line at 15.26 Å. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present new photometric observations of the X-ray nova GRO J0422 + 32 (V518 Per) carried out in the I |$_c$| band over 14 nights in 2020–2023. We had to revise the orbital period of the system, the new value |$P_{\rm orb}=5^{\rm h}04^{\rm m}35{_{.}^{\rm s}}50 \pm 0{_{.}^{\rm s}}04$| is about one minute shorter than the period by Webb et al. but close to the result reported earlier by Filippenko, Matheson & Ho. The obtained folded light curve has a regular shape with a clear ellipticity effect and signatures of a slight heating effect. The simulations of this light curve in terms of the model of an interacting binary system allowed us to estimate the orbital inclination |$i = 33^\circ {\small --} 49^\circ$| of the system and derive masses of the black hole |$M_x=(6.5\pm 2.9)\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$| and companion star |$M_v=(0.47\pm 0.21)\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$|⁠. This range of the black hole masses overlaps with the known gap of (2–5) M |$_\odot$| in the distribution of compact objects masses but mostly it lies above the upper boundary of this gap. To obtain more precise estimates one needs to know the degree of heating of the donor star, so synchronous X-ray/optical observations of this system are desirable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article is a correction to a previous paper titled "The hot gas distribution, X-ray luminosity, and baryon budget in the L-Galaxies semi-analytic model of galaxy formation." The authors discovered an error in their calculations regarding the infall time-scale of the cool core in galaxy clusters. They mistakenly used the dynamical time-scale of the entire halo instead of the correct free-fall time-scale at the core radius. This error affects the gas cooling rate and subsequently the results of the stellar and gas components in galaxy formation. Although flux variability is one of the defining properties of accretion flows on to supermassive black holes, its dependence on physical parameters such as the mass of the compact object and the Eddington ratio remains under discussion. In this paper, we address this issue using the structure function statistic to measure the variability at X-ray wavelengths of a sample of optically selected QSOs with available black hole masses and Eddington ratios. We present a new Bayesian methodology for estimating the structure function tailored to the Poisson nature of the X-ray data. This is applied to 15 548 SDSS DRQ16 QSOs with repeat observations in the XMM – Newton archive and/or the SRG/eROSITA All Sky Survey. The X-ray structure function monotonically increases to time intervals of about 10–15 yrs, consistent with scenarios in which instabilities of the accretion disc contribute to the X-ray variability on long time-scales. Additionally, there is evidence that the amplitude of the stochastic X-ray flux variations rises with decreasing black hole mass and Eddington ratio. This finding imposes stringent constraints on empirical models of Active Galactic Nuclei variability derived from local samples, emphasizing the significance of high-redshift population studies for comprehending the stochastic flux variations in active black holes. While much has been learned in recent decades about the X-ray emission of the extragalactic ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), their radiative output in the ultraviolet (UV) band remains poorly constrained. Understanding of the full ULX spectral energy distribution (SED) is imperative to constrain the accretion flow geometry powering them, as well as their radiative power. Here we present constraints on the UV emission of the pulsating ULX (PULX) NGC 1313 X-2 based on the absence of nebular He  ii  λ4686 emission in its immediate environment. To this end, we first perform multiband spectroscopy of the ULX to derive three realistic extrapolations of the SED into the inaccessible UV, each predicting varying levels of UV luminosity. We then perform photoionization modelling of the bubble nebula and predict the He  ii  λ4686 fluxes that should have been observed based on each of the derived SEDs. We then compare these predictions with the derived upper limit on He  ii  λ4686 from the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer data, which allows us to infer a UV luminosity L UV ≲ 1 × 1039 erg s−1 in the PULX NGC 1313 X-2. Comparing the UV luminosity inferred with other ULXs, our work suggests there may be an intrinsic difference between hard and soft ULXs, either related to different mass-transfer rates and/or the nature of the accretor. However, a statistical sample of ULXs with inferred UV luminosities is needed to fully determine the distinguishing features between hard and soft ULXs. We present a set of controlled hydrodynamical simulations to study the effects of strong galactic outflows on the density and temperature structures, and associated X-ray signatures, of extra-planar and circumgalactic gas. We consider three initial state models, isothermal, isentropic, and rotating cooling-flow, for the hot circumgalactic medium (CGM) into which the outflows are driven. The energy sources are either stellar winds and supernovae, or active galactic nuclei. We consider energy injection rates in the range |$10^{40} \lt \dot{E}_{\rm inj} \lt 10^{44.5}$| erg s−1, and compute the time-dependent soft X-ray (0.5–2 keV) surface brightness. For |$\dot{E}_{\rm inj} \gtrsim 10^{41} {\small --} 10^{42}$| erg s−1, with the exact threshold depending on the initial CGM state, the X-ray response is dominated by dense hot gas in the forward shock that eventually fades into the CGM as a sound wave. The shock surrounds an inner hot bubble leading to a radial flattening of the X-ray surface brightness. For lower energy injection rates, the X-ray surface brightness of the initial CGM state is almost unaffected. Strong AGN heating provides an alternative means for the disruption of cluster cool cores (CCs) to cluster mergers. In this work, we present a systematic Chandra study of a sample of 108 nearby (z < 0.1) galaxy clusters, to investigate the effect of AGN heating on CCs. About 40 per cent of clusters with small offsets between the BCG and the X-ray centre (≤50 kpc) have small CCs. For comparison, 14 of 17 clusters with large offsets have small CCs, which suggests that mergers or sloshing can be efficient in reducing the CC size. Relaxed, small CC clusters generally have weak radio AGNs (⁠|$P_{1.4\rm GHz}\lt 10^{23}$|  W Hz−1), and they show a lack of systems hosting a radio AGN with intermediate radio power (⁠|$2\times 10^{23}\lt P_{1.4\rm GHz}\lt 2\times 10^{24}$|  W Hz−1). We found that the strongest circumnuclear (<1 kpc) X-ray emission only exists in clusters with strong radio AGN. The duty cycle of relaxed, small CC clusters is less than half of that for large CC clusters. It suggests that the radio activity of BCGs is affected by the properties of the surrounding gas beyond the central ∼10 kpc, and strong radio AGNs in small X-ray CCs fade more rapidly than those embedded in large X-ray CCs. A scenario is also presented for the transition of large CCs and coronae due to radio AGN feedback. We also present a detailed analysis of galaxy cluster 3C 129.1 as an example of a CC remnant possibly disrupted by radio AGN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The incoming Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observations of X-ray binaries provide a new tool to investigate the underlying accretion geometry. Here, we report the first measurements of X-ray polarization of the extragalactic black-hole X-ray binary LMC X−3. We find a polarization fraction of |$\sim 3~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| at a polarization angle of ∼135° in the 2–8 keV energy band with statistical significance at the 7σ level. This polarization measurement significantly exceeds the minimum detectable polarization threshold of 1.2 per cent for the source, ascertained at a 99 per cent confidence level within the 2–8 keV energy band. The simultaneous spectro-polarimetric fitting of Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer, Swift /X-Ray Telescope (XRT), and IXPE revealed the presence of a disc with a temperature of ∼1 keV and a Comptonized component with a power-law index of ∼2.4, confirming the soft nature of the source. The polarization degree increases with energy from ∼3 per cent in the 2–5.7 keV band to ∼9 per cent in the 5.7–8 keV band, while the polarization angle is energy independent. The observed energy dependence and the sudden jump of polarization fraction above 5 keV supports the idea of a static slab coronal geometry for the Comptonizing medium of LMC X−3. With an aim to unveil the population of obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) hosted in high- z dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs), we performed X-ray spectral study of 34 DOGs (0.59 ≤ z ≤ 4.65) lying within 5.3 square degrees of the XMM- Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey (XMM-SERVS) coverage in the XMM-Large Scale Structure (XMM-LSS) field. To improve the spectral quality of individual sources, we combined all the existing XMM−Newton data and also included Chandra /Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) data, whenever available. We find that the X-ray spectra of our DOGs can be fitted with a simple absorbed power law or with a physically motivated borus02 model. The line-of-sight column densities (N H) in our sources span across a wide range (1.02 × 1022 cm−2 ≤ N H ≤ 1.21 × 1024 cm−2), with a substantial fraction (∼17.6 per cent) of them being heavily obscured (N H ≥ 1023 cm−2). We also identified one new Compton-thick (CT)-AGN candidate, yielding the CT-AGN fraction in our sample to be only 3 per cent. The absorption-corrected 2.0–10 keV X-ray luminosities of our sources (2.00 × 1043 erg s−1 ≤ |$L_{\rm 2-10~keV}^{\rm int}$| ≤ 6.17 ×  1045 erg s−1) suggest them to be luminous quasars. The N H versus Eddington ratio diagnostic plot infers that our sample consists of a heterogeneous population that includes a small fraction (∼12 per cent) of DOGs belonging to an early phase (Hot DOGs) during which accretion and obscuration peaks, while the remaining DOGs belong to an intermediate or late phase during which radiative feedback from the dominant AGN blows away surrounding obscuring material. We present the results from an investigation of the energy dependence of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) exhibited by accreting X-ray pulsars using data from archival XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, RXTE , and NICER observations. In a search for the presence of QPOs in 99 XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations, we detected QPOs in eleven observations of five sources, viz. 4U 1626–67 (48 mHz), IGR J19294+1816 (30 mHz), V 0332+53 (2, 18, and 40 mHz), Cen X–3 (30 mHz), and XTE J1858+034 (180 mHz). A positive correlation of the QPO rms amplitude with energy is exhibited by 4U 1626–67, IGR J19294+1816, Cen X–3 and XTE J1858+034, while no energy dependence is observed in V 0332+53. We also analysed the energy spectrum to decouple thermal (soft-excess) from non-thermal emission and determine if the soft-excess has different QPO properties. We found no evidence for different QPO characteristics of the soft excess. The NuSTAR observations of V 0332+53 during the Type-I outburst in 2016 show the presence of twin QPOs at 2.5 and 18 mHz, while the XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations during the Type-II outburst in 2015 show a QPO at 40 mHz. We review the observed QPO properties in the context of QPOs found in other types of accreting sources and the models usually used to explain the QPOs in accreting X-ray pulsars. While 30 Dor C is a unique superbubble in the Large Magellanic Cloud for its luminous non-thermal X-ray emission, the thermal X-ray emission it emanates has not yet been thoroughly investigated and well constrained. Based on the separate ∼1 Ms deep XMM–Newton and Chandra observations, we report the discovery of the thermally emitting plasma in some portions of the western half of 30 Dor C. The thermal emission can be reproduced by a collisional-ionization-equilibrium plasma model with an average electron temperature of ∼0.4 keV. We find a significant overabundance of the intermediate-mass elements such as O, Ne, Mg, and Si, which may be indicative of a recent supernova explosion in 30 Dor C. Dynamical properties in combination with the information of the OB association LH 90 suggest that the internal post-main-sequence stars dominate the power of the superbubble and blow it out in the past ∼1 Myr. Intensive broad-band reverberation mapping campaigns have shown that AGN variability is significantly more complex than expected from disc reverberation of the variable X-ray illumination. The UV/optical variability is highly correlated and lagged, with longer lags at longer wavelengths as predicted, but the observed time-scales are longer than expected. Worse, the UV/optical light curves are not well correlated with the X-rays, which should drive them. Instead, we consider an intrinsically variable accretion disc, where slow mass accretion rate fluctuations are generated in the optical-UV disc, propagating down to modulate intrinsically faster X-ray variability from the central regions. We match our model to Fairall 9, a well-studied AGN with L ∼ 0.1 L Edd, where the spectrum is dominated by the UV/EUV. Our model produces light curves where the X-rays and UV have very different fast variability, yet are well correlated on longer time-scales, as observed. It predicts that the intrinsic variability has optical/UV leading the X-rays, but including reverberation of the variable EUV from an inner wind produces a lagged bound-free continuum that matches the observed UV-optical lags. We conclude that optical/UV AGN variability is likely driven by intrinsic fluctuations within the disc, not X-ray reprocessing: the observed longer than expected lags are produced by reverberation of the EUV illuminating a wind, not by X-ray illumination of the disc: the increasing lag with increasing wavelength is produced by the increased contribution of the (constant lag) bound-free continuum to the spectrum, rather than indicating intrinsically larger reverberation distances for longer wavelengths. The origins of quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs) are poorly understood, although most theoretical explanations invoke an accretion disc around a supermassive black hole. The gas and stellar environments in the galactic nuclei of these sources are also poorly constrained. In this paper, we present an analysis of archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images to study the narrow-line [O  iii ] emission in the QPE source GSN 069. We find strong evidence for a compact nuclear [O  iii ] emission region of size ≲ 35 pc, overlaid on top of extended [O  iii ] emission up to 1 kpc away from the nucleus. The age of the accretion system is estimated to be between 10 and 100 yr. The [O  iii ] luminosity of the compact region was measured to be |$(2.1 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{40}\, \rm erg\, s^{-1}$|⁠. Based on cloudy simulations, we constrain that the [O  iii ] emitting gas has a hydrogen number density in the range |$2 \times 10^{3} \lt n_{\rm H} \lesssim 10^{8}\, \rm cm^{-3}$| and volume filling factor f V < 4 × 10−3. We suggest that the dense gas in the nuclear region of GSN 069 originates from molecular clouds (with total mass |$\gtrsim 3 \times 10^{3}\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠), which are freshly ionized by the soft X-ray photons from the accretion disc. We predict possible evolution of the compact narrow-line region on emission-line diagnostic diagrams, and hence future HST or integral-field unit observations can be used to further pin down the age of this puzzling system. It is expected that the extreme mass accretion rate onto strongly magnetized neutron stars results in the appearance of accretion columns above the stellar surface. For a distant observer, rotation of a star results in periodic variations of X-ray flux. Because the mass accretion rate fluctuates around the average value, the pulse profiles are not stable and demonstrate fluctuations as well. In the case of bright X-ray pulsars, however, pulse fluctuations are not solely attributed to variations in the mass accretion rate. They are also influenced by the variable height of the columns, which is dependent on the mass accretion rate. This study delves into the process of pulse profile formation in bright X-ray pulsars, taking into account stochastic fluctuations in the mass accretion rate, the corresponding variations in accretion column geometry, and gravitational bending. Our analysis reveals that potential eclipses of accretion columns by a neutron star during their spin period should manifest specific features in pulse profile variability. Applying a novel pulse profile analysis technique, we successfully detect these features in the bright X-ray transient V 0332+53 at luminosities |$\gtrsim 2\times 10^{38}\, {\rm erg\ \rm s^{-1}}$|⁠. This detection serves as compelling evidence for the eclipse of an accretion column by a neutron star. Detection of the eclipse places constraints on the relation between neutron star mass, radius, and accretion column height. Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars are intermediate-mass pre-main-sequence stars, characterized by infrared (IR) excess and emission lines. They are observed to emit X-rays, whose origin is a matter of discussion and not settled yet. X-ray emission is not expected in HAeBe stars, as they lack the subsurface convective zone. In this study, we retrieved observations from the Chandra archive for 62 HAeBe stars, among which 44 sources (detection fraction ∼71  per cent) were detected in X-rays, with 7 being new detections. We use this sample as a test bed to conduct a comparative analysis of the X-ray properties of HAeBe stars and their low-mass counterparts, T Tauri stars (TTSs). Further, we compare the X-ray properties of HAeBe stars and TTSs with optical and IR properties to constrain the X-ray emission mechanism in HAeBe stars. We found no correlation between X-ray emission and disc properties of HAeBe stars, confirming that X-rays are not related to accretion shocks. About 56  per cent of HAeBe stars without any known subarcsec companions have lower plasma temperatures (kT ≤ 2 keV). We observe flaring/variability in HAeBe stars with confirmed low-mass companions. These stars show plasma temperatures > 2 keV, similar to TTSs. Guided by this information, we discuss the role of a T Tauri companion for X-ray emission seen in our sample of HAeBe stars. From the results obtained in this paper, we suggest that X-ray emission from HAeBe stars may not be related to accretion shocks or hidden TTS, but rather can be due to magnetically driven coronal emission. One of the leading mechanisms invoked to explain the existence of the radius valley is atmospheric mass-loss driven by X-ray and extreme-ultraviolet irradiation, with this process stripping the primordial envelopes of young, small planets to produce the observed bimodal distribution. We present an investigation into the TOI-431 and ν2 Lupi planetary systems, both of which host planets either side of the radius valley, to determine if their architectures are consistent with evolution by the X-ray/ultraviolet (XUV) mechanism. With XMM–Newton , we measure the current X-ray flux of each star, and see evidence for a stellar flare in the TOI-431 observations. We then simulate the evolution of all of the transiting planets across the two systems in response to the high-energy irradiation over their lifetimes. We use the measured X-ray fluxes as an anchor point for the XUV time evolution in our simulations, and employ several different models of estimating mass-loss rates. While the simulations for TOI-431 b encountered a problem with the initial calculated radii, we estimate a likely short (∼Myr) timespan for primordial envelope removal using reasonable assumptions for the initial planet. ν2 Lupi b is likely harder to strip, but is achieved in a moderate fraction of our simulations. None of our simulations stripped any of the lower density planets of their envelope, in line with prediction. We conclude that both systems are consistent with expectations for generation of the radius valley through XUV photoevaporation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the Granger causality (GC) test for the X-ray reverberation analysis of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). If the light curves in the continuum-dominated band help predict (Granger cause) those dominated by reflection, the Granger lags that associate to the intrinsic reverberation lags can be inferred. We focus on six AGNs observed by XMM–Newton , including the sources well-known to exhibit clear X-ray reverberation lags (IRAS 13224−3809 and 1H 0707−495) and those in which reverberation signatures are not well confirmed (MCG–6-30-15, IZW1, Mrk 704, and Mrk 1040). We employ the sliding-window algorithm and estimate the Granger (intrinsic) Fe-L lags along the light curve as the window moves through. This reveals the evolving lags towards the end of some individual observations, suggesting that the corona varies progressively. Occasionally, we observe two clearly separate lags that suggest an extended corona consisting of two zones while producing competing reverberation of two lags. While the GC test is purely hypothetical and might not explain true causality, our conclusion is that the lags are present and could be understood as reverberation lags. Assuming the lags changing solely with the corona, we find that the IRAS 13224−3809 corona varies between ∼10 and 25  r g and sometimes move to ≳50  r g. The corona of 1H 0707−495 and MCG–6-30-15 may be analogous to that of IRAS 13224−3809, while in IZw1, Mrk 704, and Mrk 1040, a more compact corona is expected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

IGR J18434−0508 is a Galactic Intermediate Polar (IP) type Cataclysmic Variable (CV) previously classified through optical spectroscopy. The source is already known to have a hard Chandra spectrum. In this paper, we have used follow-up XMM–Newton and NuSTAR observations to measure the white dwarf (WD) mass and spin period. We measure a spin period of P  = 304.4 ± 0.3 s based on the combined MOS1, MOS2, and pn light curve. Although this is twice the optical period found previously, we interpret this value to be the true spin period of the WD. The source has an |$8\pm 2~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| pulsed fraction in the 0.5–10 keV XMM–Newton data and shows strong dips in the soft energy band (0.5–2 keV). The XMM–Newton and NuSTAR joint spectrum is consistent with a thermal bremsstrahlung continuum model with an additional partial covering factor, reflection, and Fe-line Gaussian components. Furthermore, we fit the joint spectrum with the post-shock region 'ipolar' model which indicates a high WD mass ≳1.36 M⊙, approaching the Chandrasekhar limit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We analyse a Chandra observation of the rich globular cluster NGC 362, finding 33 X-ray sources within 1 arcmin (1.2 half-mass radii) of the cluster centre. Spectral analysis of the brightest source (X1) shows blackbody-like emission, indicating it is likely a quiescent low-mass X-ray binary; we find a possible counterpart that falls in the sub-subgiant region. We use Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet (UV) Globular Cluster Survey photometry to identify 15 potential optical/UV counterparts to these X-ray sources, including two background active galactic nuclei. We identify no likely cataclysmic variables (CVs), probably due to crowding in optical filters in the core, though we predict of order 8 CVs among the detected X-ray sources. We identify three other sub-subgiants and two red straggler counterparts, which are likely powered by coronal activity, along with five other potential coronally active binary counterparts to three X-ray sources. Finally, we note two unusual counterpart candidates that lie to the red of the red giant branch in V 606 − I 814, and shift well to the blue of the red giant branch in ultraviolet colour–magnitude diagrams. These systems seem to contain a red giant with a distorted evolutionary history, plus a bright blue light source, either a blue straggler star (an Algol-like system) or an accreting white dwarf (a long-period CV, or a symbiotic star). Highly radio-loud quasars (HRLQs; log  R > 2.5) at z ≳ 4 show apparent enhanced X-ray emission compared to matched HRLQs at lower redshifts, perhaps due to a redshift-dependent fractional contribution to the X-ray luminosity from inverse-Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background photons (IC/CMB). Using new Chandra observations and archival X-ray data, we investigate this phenomenon with an optically flux-limited sample of 41 HRLQs at z  = 4–5.5 all with sensitive X-ray coverage, the largest sample utilized to date by a wide margin. X-ray enhancements are assessed using X-ray-to-optical flux ratios and spectral energy distributions. We confirm the presence of X-ray enhancements at a 4.9–5.3σ significance level, finding that the median factor of enhancement is ≈1.8 at our sample median redshift of z ≈ 4.4. Under a fractional IC/CMB model, the expected enhancement at lower redshifts is modest; e.g. ≈4 per cent at z ≈ 1.5. We also investigate a sample of seven radio-loud quasars (RLQs; log  R > 1) at even higher redshifts of z  = 5.6–6.8, using new and archival X-ray data. These RLQs also show evidence for X-ray enhancements by a median factor of ≈2.7 at a 3.7–4.9σ significance level. The X-ray spectral and other properties of these z  = 5.6–6.8 RLQs, however, pose challenges for a straightforward fractional IC/CMB interpretation of their enhancements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a novel approach to identify galaxy clusters that are undergoing a merger using a deep learning approach. This paper uses massive galaxy clusters spanning 0 ≤ z ≤ 2 from The Three Hundred project, a suite of hydrodynamic resimulations of 324 large galaxy clusters. Mock, idealized Compton- y and X-ray maps were constructed for the sample, capturing them out to a radius of 2 R 200. The idealized nature of these maps mean they do not consider observational effects such as foreground or background astrophysical objects, any spatial resolution limits or restriction on X-ray energy bands. Half of the maps belong to a merging population as defined by a mass increase Δ M/M ≥ 0.75, and the other half serves as a controlled, relaxed population. We employ a convolutional neural network architecture and train the model to classify clusters into one of the groups. A best-performing model was able to correctly distinguish between the two populations with a balanced accuracy (BA) and recall of 0.77, ROC-AUC of 0.85, PR-AUC of 0.55, and F 1 score of 0.53. Using a multichannel model relative to a single-channel model, we obtain a 3 per cent improvement in BA score, and a 6 per cent improvement in F 1 score. We use a saliency interpretation approach to discern the regions most important to each classification decision. By analysing radially binned saliency values we find a preference to utilize regions out to larger distances for mergers with respect to non-mergers, greater than ∼1.2 R 200 and ∼0.7 R 200 for SZ and X-ray, respectively. We present the results obtained from an X-ray timing study of the new black hole candidate Swift J1727.8−1613. The work is based on Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight - HXMT) observations carried out during the 2023 outburst. Prominent type-C low-frequency Quasi-periodic Oscillations (LFQPOs) are detected throughout the observations. With the substantial effective area of the Insight - HXMT at high energies, we examine the energy dependence of various parameters, including the centroid frequency, fractional rms, and phase lags of the type-C QPOs. Our findings align closely with those observed in high-inclination systems. During the initial stage of the outburst, a peaked noise component is also detected, the frequency of which is highly correlated with the LFQPO frequency, aligning with the Psaltis–Belloni–van der Klis relation. By assuming that the peaked noise originates from the precession of the accretion disc, the spin of this source can be constrained. Our results suggest that this source may possess a high spin. We report here results from pulse arrival time delay analysis of the eclipsing high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) pulsar LMC X-4 using observations made with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, XMM –Newton, NuSTAR (Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope ARray), and AstroSat. Combining the orbital parameters determined from these observations with the historical measurements dating back to 1998, we have extended the T π/2 epoch history of LMC X-4 by about 4600 binary orbits spanning about 18 yr. We also report mid-eclipse time measurements (T ecl) using data obtained from wide-field X-ray monitors of MAXI -GSC (Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image – Gas Slit Camera) and Swift - BAT (Burst Alert Telescope). Combining the new T π/2 and T ecl estimates with all the previously reported values, we have significantly improved the orbital evolution measurement, which indicates that the orbital period is evolving at a time-scale (⁠|$P_{\rm orb}/\dot{P}_{\rm orb}$|⁠) of about 0.8 Myr. For the first time in an accreting X-ray pulsar system, we confirm the existence of a second derivative of the orbital period, having an evolution time-scale (⁠|$\dot{P}_{\mathrm{ orb}}/\ddot{P}_{\mathrm{ orb}}$|⁠) of about 55 yr. Detection of a second derivative of the orbital period in LMC X-4 makes its orbital evolution time-scale more uncertain, which may also be true for other HMXBs. Independent solutions for the orbital evolution measurement using the mid-eclipse data and the pulse timing data are consistent with each other, and help us put an upper limit of 0.009 on the eccentricity of the binary system. G352.7−0.1 is a mixed-morphology (MM) supernova remnant (SNR) with multiple radio arcs and has a disputed supernova origin. We conducted a spatially resolved spectroscopic study of the remnant with XMM–Newton X-ray data to investigate its explosion mechanism and explain its morphology. The global X-ray spectra of the SNR can be adequately reproduced using a metal-rich thermal plasma model with a temperature of ∼2 keV and ionization time-scale of ∼3 × 1010 cm−3 s. Through a comparison with various supernova nucleosynthesis models, we found that observed metal properties from Mg to Fe can be better described using core-collapse supernova models, while thermonuclear models fail to explain the observed high Mg/Si ratio. The best-fit supernova model suggests a ∼13 M⊙ progenitor star, consistent with previous estimates using the wind bubble size. We also discussed the possible mechanisms that may lead to SNR G352.7−0.1 being an MMSNR. By dividing the SNR into several regions, we found that the temperature and abundance do not significantly vary with regions, except for a decreased temperature and abundance in a region interacting with molecular clouds. The brightest X-ray emission of the SNR spatially matches with the inner radio structure, suggesting that the centrally filled X-ray morphology results from a projection effect. X-ray photons can penetrate deep into the intergalactic medium (IGM), leading to pre-heating of the IGM prior to cosmic reionization. X-ray pre-heating wipes out some of the small-scale structures that would otherwise be present prior to the passage of an ionization front. Accurate modelling of the small-scale structure is vital to the post-reionization IGM, since the small-scale structure is ultimately the dominant source of long-lasting relics from hydrogen reionization. However, the precise impact of X-ray pre-heating in the fossils from hydrogen reionization is highly uncertain. In this work, we explore and establish for the first time, the long-lasting impact of X-ray pre-heating in the post-reionization IGM via hydrodynamic simulations with high-mass resolution. We find that the addition of X-ray pre-heating astrophysics leads to an overall lesser impact of the effect of inhomogeneous reionization in the Lyα forest – depending on specific X-ray prescription – at low redshifts (z ∼ 2) with respect to a model with no X-ray pre-heating. However, at high redshifts (z ∼ 4), our results indicate a strengthening of the relics of reionization in the Lyα forest because the IGM becomes more transparent compared to the scenario with no pre-heating. Thus, the absence of X-ray pre-heating in Lyα modelling can lead to a biased inference of cosmological parameters. Nevertheless, optimistically, the inclusion of X-ray pre-heating emerges as a promising novel avenue to probe the astrophysics of cosmic dawn. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

X-ray emission from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) often displays complex and rapid variability, which may provide a glimpse into the detailed thermal and dynamical structure of the accreting gas near the event horizon of the central black hole. The observed variability can be analysed using Fourier transforms of the light curves in multiple energy channels, which can be used to generate Fourier phase lags, corresponding to lags in the time domain. The X-ray time lags may be either soft lags or hard lags, depending on whether the variability in the hard energy channel precedes that in the soft channel or vice versa. The physical explanation for the observed X-ray time lags from AGNs has been puzzling, and several scenarios have been proposed. In this paper, we explore the hypothesis that the X-ray time lags are produced as a result of the reprocessing of iron L-line and K-line seed photons generated via fluorescence, which is driven by a variable incident radiation field. The seed photons are reprocessed by a combination of thermal and bulk Comptonization and spatial reverberation. We assume that the inner region of the accretion flow can be approximated as a hot, geometrically thick ADAF disc. The outer radius of the ADAF region is equal to the shock formation radius, which is located just outside the centrifugal barrier. The time-dependent radiative transfer in the disc is analysed using a Fourier-transformed, vertically averaged transport equation in cylindrical coordinates. We demonstrate that the new model can successfully reproduce the complex X-ray variability data for the Seyfert 1 galaxies 1H 0707–495 and Ark 564. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We fit the high-resolution Chandra X-ray spectra of the O supergiant ζ Puppis using the variable boundary condition (VBC) line model to test the stability of its mass-loss rate between two epochs of observation: 2000 March and 2018 July – 2019 August. At issue is whether the observed variations are induced by global changes in the cool (unshocked) wind itself or are isolated to the local pockets of hot gas (i.e. changes in the frequency and location of the shocks). Evidence in the literature favoured the possibility of a 40 per cent increase in the mass flux of the entire stellar wind, based on X-ray reabsorption from a line-deshadowing-instability-inspired parametrization, whereas our fit parameters are consistent with a constant mass flux with a change in the velocity variations that determine the locations where shocks form. Our results suggest the shocks in the more recent data are formed at somewhat larger radii, mimicking the enhanced blueshifts and increased line fluxes interpreted in the previous analysis as being due to increases in both the X-ray generation and reabsorption from an overall stronger wind. The cosmological 21-cm signal offers a potential probe of the early Universe and the first ionizing sources. Current experiments probe the spatially dependent variance (Gaussianity) of the signal through the power spectrum (PS). The signal, however, is expected to be highly non-Gaussian due to the complex topology of reionization and X-ray heating. We investigate the non-Gaussianities of X-ray heating and reionization, by calculating the skew spectrum (SS) of the 21-cm signal using meraxes , which couples a semi-analytic galaxy population with seminumerical reionization simulations. The SS is the cross-spectrum of the quadratic temperature brightness field with itself. We generate a set of seven simulations from z = 30 to 5, varying the halo mass threshold for hosting star formation, the X-ray luminosity per star formation rate, and the minimum X-ray energy escaping host galaxies. We find the SS is predominantly negative as a function of redshift, transitioning to positive towards the start of reionization, and peaking during the mid-point of reionization. We do not see a negative dip in the SS during reionization, likely due to the specifics of modelling ionization sources. We normalize the SS by the PS during reionization isolating the non-Gaussianities. We find a trough (⁠|$k\sim \, 0.1\, \textrm {Mpc}^{-1}$|⁠) and peak (⁠|$k\sim \, 0.4{-}1\, \textrm {Mpc}^{-1}$|⁠) in the normalized SS during the mid-to-late periods of reionization. These correlate to the ionization topology, and neutral islands in the IGM. We present a comprehensive timing analysis on the Be/X-ray binary pulsar RX J0440.9+4431 using observations from NICER and Insight - HXMT during the 2022–2023 outburst. The power density spectrum (PDS) of RX J0440.9+4431 exhibits typical aperiodic variability in X-ray flux across a wide frequency range. During a supercritical accretion state, we detect quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) at 0.2–0.5 Hz in the light curves of five pulses for RX J0440.9+4431. The observed QPOs manifest during flares, while the flares appear at the peaks of the pulse profiles on a time-scale of seconds and are primarily caused by an increase in hard photons. These flares can be explained by increased material ingestion in the accretion column at a fixed phase, primarily generating hard photons. Alternatively, an increase in accretion rate, independent of phase, may result in highly beamed hard photons within the accretion column, causing the flares. We argue the origin of QPOs to instabilities within the accretion flow. Additionally, we find that the break frequencies in the noise power spectra align well with |$\propto L_{\mathrm{x}}^{3 / 7}$| across three orders of magnitude in the luminosity, which points to a relatively strong magnetic field in RX J0440.9+4431, estimated to be ~1013 G. The globular cluster ultraluminous X-ray source, RZ 2109, is a complex and unique system that has been detected at X-ray, ultraviolet, and optical wavelengths. Based on almost 20 yr of Chandra and XMM–Newton observations, the X-ray luminosity exhibits order of magnitude variability, with the peak flux lasting on the order of a few hours. We perform robust time series analysis on the archival X-ray observations and find that this variability is periodic on a time-scale of 1.3 ± 0.04 d. The source also demonstrates broad [O  iii ] λ5007 emission, which has been observed since 2004, suggesting a white dwarf donor and therefore an ultra-compact X-ray binary. We present new spectra from 2020 and 2022, marking 18 yr of observed [O  iii ] emission from this source. Meanwhile, we find that the globular cluster counterpart is unusually bright in the NUV/ UVW 2 band. Finally, we discuss RZ 2109 in the context of the eccentric Kozai–Lidov mechanism and show that the observed 1.3 d periodicity can be used to place constraints on the tertiary configuration, ranging from 20 min (for a 0.1 M⊙ companion) to approximately 95 min (for a 1 M⊙ companion), if the eccentric Kozai–Lidov mechanism is at the origin of the periodic variability. We studied the multiband properties of two ultraluminous X-ray sources (2CXO J225728.9−410211 = X-1 and 2CXO J225724.7−410343 = X-2) and their surroundings, in the spiral galaxy NGC 7424. Both sources have approached X-ray luminosities L X ∼ 1040 erg s−1 at some epochs. Thanks to a more accurate astrometric solution (based on Australia Telescope Compact Array and Gaia data), we identified the point-like optical counterpart of X-1, which looks like an isolated B8 supergiant (M ≈ 9 M ⊙, age ≈30 Myr). Instead, X-2 is in a star-forming region (size of about 100 pc × 150 pc), near young clusters and ionized gas. Very large telescope long-slit spectra show a spatially extended region of He  ii λ4686 emission around the X-ray position, displaced by about 50 pc from the brightest star cluster, which corresponds to the peak of lower ionization line emission. We interpret the He  ii λ4686 emission as a signature of X-ray photoionization from the ULX, while the other optical lines are consistent with UV ionization in an ordinary He ii region. The luminosity of this He++ nebula puts it in the same class as other classical photoionized ULX nebulae such as those around Holmberg II X-1 and NGC 5408 X-1. We locate a strong (5.5 GHz luminosity |$\nu \, L_{\nu } \approx 10^{35}$|  erg s−1), steep-spectrum, unresolved radio source at the peak of the low-ionization lines, and discuss alternative physical scenarios for the radio emission. With an X-ray stacking analysis of |$\simeq 12\, 000$| Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) using the Chandra Legacy Survey image, we investigate average supermassive black hole (SMBH) accretion properties of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at 4 ≲ z ≲ 7. Although no X-ray signal is detected in any stacked image, we obtain strong 3σ upper limits for the average black hole accretion rate (BHAR) as a function of star formation rate (SFR). At z ∼ 4 (5) where the stacked image is deeper, the 3σ BHAR upper limits per SFR are ∼1.5 (1.0) dex lower than the local black hole-to-stellar mass ratio, indicating that the SMBHs of SFGs in the inactive (BHAR |$\lesssim 1 \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$| yr−1) phase are growing much more slowly than expected from simultaneous evolution. We obtain a similar result for BHAR per dark halo accretion rate. QSOs from the literature are found to have ∼1 dex higher SFRs and ≳ 2 dex higher BHARs than LBGs with the same dark halo mass. We also make a similar comparison for dusty starburst galaxies and quiescent galaxies from the literature. A duty-cycle corrected analysis shows that for a given dark halo, the SMBH mass increase in the QSO phase dominates over that in the much longer inactive phase. Finally, a comparison with the TNG300, TNG100, SIMBA100, and EAGLE100 simulations finds that they overshoot our BHAR upper limits by ≲ 1.5 dex, possibly implying that simulated SMBHs are too massive. While collisionless cold dark matter models have been largely successful in explaining a wide range of observational data, some tensions still exist, and it remains possible that dark matter possesses a non-negligible level of self-interactions. In this paper, we investigate a possible observable consequence of self-interacting dark matter: offsets between the central galaxy and the centre of mass of its parent halo. We examine 23 relaxed galaxy clusters in a redshift range of 0.1–0.3 drawn from clusters in the Dark Energy Survey and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey which have archival Chandra X-ray data of sufficient depth for centre and relaxation determination. We find that most clusters in our sample show non-zero offsets between the X-ray centre, taken to be the centroid within the cluster core, and the central galaxy position. All of the measured offsets are larger, typically by an order of magnitude, than the uncertainty in the X-ray position due to Poisson noise. In all but six clusters, the measured offsets are also larger than the estimated, combined astrometric uncertainties in the X-ray and optical positions. A more conservative cut on concentration to select relaxed clusters marginally reduces but does not eliminate the observed offset. With our more conservative sample, we find an estimated median X-ray to central galaxy offset of |$\mu = 6.0 ^{+ 1.4}_{- 1.5}$| kpc. Comparing to recent simulations, this distribution of offsets is consistent with some level of dark matter self-interaction, though further simulation work is needed to place constraints. GRS 1747−312 is a bright Low-Mass X-ray Binary in the globular cluster Terzan 6, located at a distance of 9.5 kpc from the Earth. It exhibits regular outbursts approximately every 4.5 months, during which periodic eclipses are known to occur. These eclipses have only been observed in the outburst phase, and are not clearly seen when the source is quiescent. Recent Chandra observations of the source were performed in 2019 June and 2021 April, June, and August. Two of these observations captured the source during its outburst, and showed clear flux decreases at the expected time of eclipse. The other two observations occurred when the source was quiescent. We present the discovery of a dip that occurred during the quiescent state. The dip is of longer duration and its time of occurrence does not fit the ephemeris of the shorter eclipses. We study the physical characteristics of the dip and determine that it has all the properties of an eclipse by an object with a well defined surface. We find that there are several possibilities for the nature of the object causing the 5.3 ks eclipse. First, GRS 1747−312 may be an X-ray triple, with an LMXB orbited by an outer third object, which could be an M-dwarf, brown dwarf, or planet. Secondly, there could be two LMXBs in close proximity to each other, potentially bound together. Whatever the true nature of the eclipser, its presence suggests that the GRS 1747−312 system is exotic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present analysis on two X-ray bright points observed over several hours during the recent solar minimum (2020 February 21 and 2020 September 12–13) with the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), a sensitive hard X-ray imaging spectrometer. This is so far the most detailed study of bright points in hard X-rays, emission which can be used to search for faint hot and/or non-thermal sources. We investigate the bright points' time evolution with NuSTAR, and in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft X-rays with Solar Dynamic Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (SDO/AIA) and Hinode/X-Ray Telescope. The variability in the X-ray and EUV time profiles is generally not well matched, with NuSTAR detecting spikes that do not appear in EUV. We find that, for the 2020 February bright point, the increased X-ray emission during these spikes is due to material heated to ∼ 4.2–4.4 MK (found from fitting the X-ray spectrum). The 2020 September bright point also shows spikes in the NuSTAR data with no corresponding EUV signature seen by SDO/AIA, though in this case, it was due to an increase in emission measure of material at ∼ 2.6 MK and not a significant temperature change. So, in both cases, the discrepancy is likely due to the different temperature sensitivity of the instruments, with the X-ray variability difficult to detect in EUV due to cooler ambient bright point emission dominating. No non-thermal emission is detected, so we determine upper limits finding that only a steep non-thermal component between 3 and 4 keV could provide the required heating whilst being consistent with a null detection in NuSTAR. We present the results from spectral and timing study of the Z source GX 340+0 using AstroSat 's SXT and LAXPC data. During the observation the source traced out the complete Z-track, allowing for the spectral evolution study of the horizontal, normal, and flaring branches (HB, NB, and FB) as well as the hard and soft apexes (HA and SA). The spectra are better and more physically described by a blackbody component and a hot Comptonizing corona with a varying covering fraction, rather than one having a disc component. Along the track, the Comptonized flux (as well as the covering fraction) monotonically decreases. It is the blackbody component (both the temperature and radius) which varies non-monotonically and hence gives rise to the Z-track behaviour. Rapid timing study reveals a prominent quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) at ∼50 Hz at the HB, HA, and upper NB, while a QPO at ∼6 Hz is seen for the other branches. The fractional rms of the QPOs increase with energy and exhibit soft lags in all branches except SA and FB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an extensive radio monitoring campaign of the nuclear transient eRASSt J234402.9−352640 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, one of the most X-ray luminous TDE candidates discovered by the SRG/eROSITA all-sky survey. The observations reveal a radio flare lasting >1000 d, coincident with the X-ray, UV, optical, and infrared flare of this transient event. Through modelling of the 10 epochs of radio spectral observations obtained, we find that the radio emission is well-described by an expanding synchrotron emitting region, consisting of a single ejection of material launched coincident with the optical flare. We conclude that the radio flare properties of eRASSt J234402.9−352640 are consistent with the population of radio-emitting outflows launched by non-relativistic tidal disruption events, and that the flare is likely due to an outflow launched by a tidal disruption event (but could also be a due to a new AGN accretion event) in a previously turned-off AGN. We present a long-term X-ray study of a nearby Active Galactic Nucleus Mrk 6, utilizing observations from XMM–Newton, Suzaku, Swift , and NuSTAR observatories, spanning 22 years from 2001 to 2022. From timing analysis, we estimated variance, normalized variance, and fractional rms amplitude in different energy bands.The temporal study shows fractional rms amplitude (F var) below 10 per cent for the shorter time-scale (∼60 ks) and above 20 per cent for the longer time-scale (∼weeks). A complex correlation is observed between the soft (0.5–3.0 keV) and hard (3.0–10.0 keV) X-ray bands of different epochs of observations. This result prompts a detailed investigation through spectral analysis, employing various phenomenological and physical models on the X-ray spectra. Our analysis reveals a heterogeneous structure of the obscuring material surrounding Mrk 6. A partially ionized absorber exhibits a rapid change in location and extends up to the narrow-line regions or torus. In contrast, another component, located far from the central engine, remained relatively stable. During the observation period, the source luminosity in the 3.0–10.0 keV range varies between (3–15) × 1042 erg s−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetars, the most strongly magnetized neutron stars, are among the most promising targets for X-ray polarimetry. Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE), the first satellite devoted to exploring the sky in polarized X-rays, has observed four magnetars to date. A proper interpretation of IXPE results requires the development of new atmospheric models that can take into proper account the effects of the magnetized vacuum on par with those of the plasma. Here we investigate the effects of mode conversion at the vacuum resonance on the polarization properties of magnetar emission by computing plane-parallel atmospheric models under varying conditions of magnetic field strength/orientation, effective temperature, and allowing for either complete or partial adiabatic mode conversion. Complete mode conversion results in a switch of the dominant polarization mode, from the extraordinary (X) to the ordinary (O) one, below an energy that decreases with increasing magnetic field strength, occurring at |$\approx 0.5\, \mathrm{keV}$| for a magnetic field strength of |$B=10^{14}\, \mathrm{G}$|⁠. Partial adiabatic mode conversion results in a reduced polarization degree when compared with a standard plasma atmosphere. No dominant mode switch occurs for |$B=10^{14}\, \mathrm{G}$|⁠ , while there are two switches for lower fields of |$B=3\times 10^{13}\, \mathrm{G}$|⁠. Finally, by incorporating our models in a ray-tracing code, we computed the expected polarization signal at infinity for different emitting regions on the star surface and for different viewing geometries. The observability of quantum electrodynamics signatures with IXPE and with future soft X-ray polarimeters as Rocket Experiment Demonstration of a Soft X-ray Polarimeter is discussed.
