A fundamental difference between a neutron star (NS) and a black hole (BH) is the absence of a physical surface in the latter. For this reason, any remaining kinetic energy of the matter accreting on to a BH is advected inside its event horizon. In the case of an NS, on the contrary, accreting material is decelerated on the NS surface, and its kinetic energy is eventually radiated away. Copious soft photons produced by the NS surface will affect the properties of the Comptonized component dominating spectra of X-ray binaries in the hard state. Thus, parameters of the Comptonized spectra – the electron temperature kT e and the Compton y -parameter, could serve as an important tool for distinguishing BHs from NSs. In this paper, we systematically analyse heretofore the largest sample of spectra from the BH and NS X-ray binaries in the hard state for this purpose, using archival RXTE /PCA and RXTE /HEXTE observations. We find that the BHs and NSs occupy distinctly different regions in the y − kT e plane with NSs being characterized by systematically lower values of y -parameter and electron temperature. Due to the shape of the boundary between BHs and NSs on the y − kT e plane, their 1D y and kT e distributions have some overlap. A cleaner one parameter diagnostic of the nature of the compact object in X-ray binaries is provided by the Compton amplification factor A , with the boundary between BHs and NSs lying at A ≈ 3.5–4. Inverse Compton scattering dominates the high-energy part of the spectra of neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). It has been proposed that inverse Compton scattering also drives the radiative properties of kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs). In this work, we construct a model that predicts the energy dependence of the rms amplitude and time lag of the kHz QPOs. Using this model, we fit the rms amplitude and time lag energy spectra of the lower kHz QPO in the NS LMXB 4U 1636 − 53 over 11 frequency intervals of the QPO and report three important findings: (i) A medium that extends 1–8 km above the NS surface is required to fit the data; this medium can be sustained by the balance between gravity and radiation pressure, without forcing any equilibrium condition. (ii) We predict a time delay between the oscillating NS temperature, due to feedback, and the oscillating electron temperature of the medium, which, with the help of phase resolved spectroscopy, can be used as a probe of the geometry and the feedback mechanism. (iii) We show that the observed variability as a function of QPO frequency is mainly driven by the oscillating electron temperature of the medium. This provides strong evidence that the Comptonizing medium in LMXBs significantly affects, if not completely drives, the radiative properties of the lower kHz QPOs regardless of the nature of the dynamical mechanism that produces the QPO frequencies. Compton scattering between electrons and photons plays a crucial role in astrophysical plasmas. Many important aspects of this process can be captured by using the so-called Compton scattering kernel. For isotropic media, exact analytic expressions (valid at all electron and photon energies) do exist but are hampered by numerical issues and often are presented in complicated ways. In this paper, we summarize, simplify, and improve existing analytic expressions for the Compton scattering kernel, with an eye on clarity and physical understanding. We provide a detailed overview of important properties of the kernel covering a wide range of energies and highlighting aspects that have not been appreciated as much previously. We discuss analytic expressions for the moments of the kernel, comparing various approximations and demonstrating their precision. We also illustrate the properties of the scattering kernel for thermal electrons at various temperatures and photon energies, introducing new analytic approximations valid to high temperatures. The obtained improved formulae for the kernel and its moments should prove useful in many astrophysical computations, one of them being the evolution of spectral distortions of the cosmic microwave background in the early Universe. A novel code, cspack , for efficient computations of the Compton scattering kernel and its properties (in the future also including anisotropies in the initial electron and photon distributions) is being developed in a series of papers and will be available within one month. Using archival data from Suzaku, XMM–Newton , and NuSTAR , nine representative ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in nearby galaxies were studied. Their X-ray spectra were all reproduced with a multicolour disc emission model plus its Comptonization. However, the spectral shapes of individual sources changed systematically depending on the luminosity, and defined three typical spectral states. These states differ either in the ratio between the Comptonizing electron temperature and the innermost disc temperature, or in the product of Compton y-parameter and fraction of the Comptonized disc photons. The luminosity range at which a particular state emerges was found to scatter by a factor of up to 16 among the eight ULXs. By further assuming that the spectral state is uniquely determined by the Eddington ratio, the sample ULXs are inferred to exhibit a similar scatter in their masses. This gives a model-independent support to the interpretation of ULXs in terms of relatively massive black holes. None of the spectra showed noticeable local structures. Especially, no Fe K-shell absorption/emission lines were detected, with upper limits of 30–40 eV in equivalent width from the brightest three among the sample: NGC 1313 X-1, Holmberg IX X-1, and IC 342 X-1. These properties disfavour ordinary mass accretion from a massive companion star, and suggest direct Bondi–Hoyle accretion from dense parts of the interstellar medium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
