The aim of this work was to perform a comprehensive study on the chemical constituents, and the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and whitening activities of tobacco seed oils (NC89 and BS4). A GC/MS analysis revealed that NC89 and BS4 had 11 and 6 volatile compounds, respectively. The PUFA contents in NC89 and BS4 were 74.98% and 72.84%, respectively. These two tobacco seed oils also presented good radical scavenging capacities with the neutralization of ABTS, OH−, and superoxide (O2−) radicals in a concentration-dependent manner. Meanwhile, NC89 and BS4 inhibited reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and cell apoptosis, enhanced SOD and CAT activities, and increased the GSH content in H2O2-induced HepG2 cells. In addition, NC89 and BS4 exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activities by inhibiting the expressions of NO, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 in LPS-induced RAW.264.7 cells through the regulation of the MAPK signaling pathway. Moreover, NC89 and BS4 expressed whitening activities by inhibiting tyrosinase activity and intracellular melanin production. Therefore, tobacco seed oils could be used as an important oil resource for the development of high value-added products.

Ischemic stroke is a difficult-to-treat brain disease that may be attributed to a limited therapeutic time window and lack of effective clinical drugs. Nasal-brain administration is characterized by low systemic toxicity and is a direct and non-invasive brain targeting route. Preliminary studies have shown that the volatile oil of Chaxiong (VOC) has an obvious anti-ischemic stroke effect. In this work, we designed a nanoemulsion thermosensitive in situ gel (VOC-NE-ISG) loaded with volatile oil of Chaxiong for ischemia via intranasal delivery to rat brain treatment of cerebral ischemic stroke. The developed VOC-NE-ISG formulation has a suitable particle size of 21.02 ± 0.25 nm and a zeta potential of -20.4 ± 1.47 mV, with good gelling ability and prolonged release of the five components of VOC. The results of in vivo pharmacokinetic studies and brain targeting studies showed that intranasal administration of VOC-NE-ISG could significantly improve the bioavailability and had excellent brain-targeting efficacy of nasal-to-brain delivery. In addition, the results of pharmacodynamics experiments showed that both VOC-NE and VOC-NE-ISG could reduce the neurological deficit score of model rats, reducing the size of cerebral infarction, with a significant effect on improving ischemic stroke. Overall, VOC-NE-ISG may be a promising intranasal nanomedicine for the effective treatment of ischemic stroke.

Pickering emulsions are considered to be natural, biodegradable, and safe, so their applications in various fields—such as food, cosmetics, biomedicine, etc.—are very promising, including as a vehicle for essential oils (EOs). These oils contain volatile and aromatic compounds and have excellent properties, such as antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, and antioxidant activities. Despite their superior properties, EOs are prone to evaporation, decompose when exposed to light and oxygen, and have low solubility, limiting their industrial applications. Several studies have shown that EOs in Pickering emulsions displays less sensitivity to evaporation and oxidation, stronger antibacterial activity, and increased solubility. In brief, the application of Pickering emulsions for EOs is interesting to explore. This review discusses recent progress in the application of Pickering emulsions, particularly as EO carriers, drug carriers, antioxidant and antimicrobial carriers, and in active packaging.

Essential oils extracted from the bark of trees have not been researched as extensively as from other plant components. Therefore, this review will focus on bringing together previous research on selected bark oils to provide an overview of barks that are economically, medicinally, and ethnopharmaceutically relevant. The bark oils described are Cinnamomum verum, Cedrelopsis grevei, Drypetes gossweileri, Cryptocarya massoy, Vanillosmopsis arborea and Cedrus deodara. Fried pepper oil retains the overall flavor outline of pepper, and its unique rich and spicy flavor is deeply loved by consumers. In order to study the effect of different production areas of pepper on the flavor compounds of fried pepper oil, taking dried pepper from seven different production areas as raw materials, and taking rapeseed oil as a carrier oil as well as a constant frying temperature to prepare pepper oil, the present study analyzed the volatile flavor components of pepper oil qualitatively and quantitatively by employing headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The principal component analysis (PCA) method was used to construct the correlation analysis model of volatile flavor substances among different samples of pepper oil. Applying the hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), the main volatile substances causing the flavor differences of pepper oil from different production areas were identified. The results showed that a total of 81 chemical components were identified, including 15 alcohols, 10 aldehydes, 5 ketones, 34 hydrocarbons, 11 esters, 6 acids, and others. Terpinen-4-ol, linalool, 2,4-decadienal, trans-2-heptenal, sabinene, linalyl acetate, bornyl acetate, myrcene, 1-caryophyllene, trans-α-ocimene, and limonene were selected as the main substances leading to the flavor differences among the pepper oil samples. These 11 chemical components played a decisive role in the construction of the overall aroma of the pepper oil. Using a descriptive sensory analysis, it was concluded that pepper oil from different production areas holds different aroma intensities. Compared with the other six samples, S4 Hanyuan Pepper Oil (HYPO) shows a relatively strong trend toward a spicy fragrance, fresh grassy fragrance, floral and fruity fragrance, fresh sweet fragrance, and fatty aroma.
