Extended exposure to UVB (280–315 nm) radiation results in oxidative damage and inflammation of the skin. Previous research has demonstrated that pilose antler extracts have strong anti-inflammatory properties and possess antioxidant effects. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanism of pilose antler protein in repairing photodamage caused by UVB radiation in HaCaT cells and ICR mice. Pilose antler protein (PAP) was found to increase the expression of type I collagen and hyaluronic acid in HaCaT cells under UVB irradiation while also inhibiting reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and oxidative stress in vitro. In vivo, the topical application of pilose antler protein effectively attenuated UVB-induced skin damage in ICR mice by reducing interleukin-1β (IL-β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and inhibiting skin inflammation while alleviating UVB-induced oxidative stress. It was shown that pilose antler protein repaired UVB-induced photodamage through the MAPK and TGF-β/Smad pathways.

The volatile organic compounds of six spices, including black pepper, dried ginger, cinnamon, fennel, clove, and zanthoxylum, were analyzed by gas chromatography–ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) combined with principal component analysis (PCA) and Euclidean distance. In further analyses, the effects of volatile oils in six spices on ulcerative colitis were assayed in a zebrafish model induced by 3-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid. A total of 120 kinds of volatile organic compounds were detected and 80 among them were identified, which included 10 common components and 3 to 24 characteristic components belonging to different spices. The major VOCs in six spices were estimated to be terpenes with the contents of 45.02%, 56.87%, 36.68%, 58.19%, 68.68%, and 30.62%, respectively. Meanwhile, the volatile components of fennel, dried ginger, black pepper, and cinnamon are quite similar, but differ from clove and zanthoxylum. The volatile oils in six spices presented efficient activity to improve ulcerative colitis which can decrease the number of neutrophils, restore the structure of intestinal epithelial and the morphology of the epithelial cells. Our study achieved rapid analysis of the volatile organic compounds and flavors in six spices and further revealed the potential health benefits of their volatile oils on ulcerative colitis, especially for clove and zanthoxylum. This study is expected to provide certain data support for the quality evaluation and the potential use in functional foods of six spices.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have an extremely diverse application nowadays as an environmentally friendly and renewable new energy storage technology. The porous structure of the separator, one essential component of LIBs, provides an ion transport channel for the migration of ions and directly affects the overall performance of the battery. In this work, we fabricated a composite separator (GOP-PH-ATP) via simply laminating an electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) nanofibrous membrane coated with attapulgite (ATP) nanoparticles onto a PP nonwoven microfibrous fabric, which exhibits a unique porous structure with a pore-size gradient along the thickness direction that ranges from tens of microns to hundreds of nanometers. As a result, besides the enhanced thermal stability given by the chosen materials, the GOP-PH-ATP separator was endowed with a superhigh porosity of ~95%, strong affinity with electrolyte, and great electrolyte uptake of ~760%, thus effectively enabling an ionic conductivity of 2.38 mS cm−1 and a lithium-ion transference number of 0.62. Furthermore, the cell with the GOP-PH-ATP separator shows an excellent cycling performance with a capacity retention of 91.2% after 150 cycles at 1 C, suggesting that the composite separator with a pore-size gradient structure has great potential to be applied in LIBs.

We recently developed a series of nalfurafine analogs (TK10, TK33, and TK35) that may serve as non-addictive candidate analgesics. These compounds are mixed-action agonists at the kappa and delta opioid receptors (KOR and DOR, respectively) and produce antinociception in a mouse warm-water tail-immersion test while failing to produce typical mu opioid receptor (MOR)-mediated side effects. The warm-water tail-immersion test is an assay of pain-stimulated behavior vulnerable to false-positive analgesic-like effects by drugs that produce motor impairment. Accordingly, this study evaluated TK10, TK33, and TK35 in a recently validated assay of pain-related behavioral depression in mice that are less vulnerable to false-positive effects. For comparison, we also evaluated the effects of the MOR agonist/analgesic hydrocodone (positive control), the neurokinin 1 receptor (NK1R) antagonist aprepitant (negative control), nalfurafine as a selective KOR agonist, SNC80 as a selective DOR agonist, and a nalfurafine/SNC80 mixture. Intraperitoneal injection of dilute lactic acid (IP lactic acid) served as a noxious stimulus to depress vertical and horizontal locomotor activity in male and female ICR mice. IP lactic acid-induced locomotor depression was alleviated by hydrocodone but not by aprepitant, nalfurafine, SNC80, the nalfurafine/SNC80 mixture, or the KOR/DOR agonists. These results suggest that caution is warranted in advancing mixed-action KOR/DOR agonists as candidate analgesics.

With the intensification of the energy crisis, it is urgent to vigorously develop new environment-friendly energy storage materials. In this work, coexisting ferroelectric and relaxor-ferroelectric phases at a nanoscale were constructed in Sr(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 (SZN)-modified (Bi0.5Na0.5)0.94Ba0.06TiO3 (BNBT) ceramics, simultaneously contributing to large polarization and breakdown electric field and giving rise to a superior energy storage performance. Herein, a high recoverable energy density (Wrec) of 5.0 J/cm3 with a conversion efficiency of 82% at 370 kV/cm, a practical discharged energy density (Wd) of 1.74 J/cm3 at 230 kV/cm, a large power density (PD) of 157.84 MW/cm3, and an ultrafast discharge speed (t0.9) of 40 ns were achieved in the 0.85BNBT-0.15SZN ceramics characterized by the coexistence of a rhombohedral-tetragonal phase (ferroelectric state) and a pseudo-cubic phase (relaxor-ferroelectric state). Furthermore, the 0.85BNBT-0.15SZN ceramics also exhibited excellent temperature stability (25–120 °C) and cycling stability (104 cycles) of their energy storage properties. These results demonstrate the great application potential of 0.85BNBT-0.15SZN ceramics in capacitive pulse energy storage devices.

AgCu bimetallic· nanoparticles (NPs) represent a novel class of inorganic, broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents that offer enhanced antimicrobial effectiveness and reduced cytotoxicity compared to conventional Ag NP antibacterial materials. This study examines the antimicrobial performance and structural characteristics of AgCu nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized via two distinct chemical reduction processes using PVP-PVA as stabilizers. Despite identical chemical elements and sphere-like shapes in both synthesis methods, the resulting AgCu nanoparticles exhibited significant differences in size and antimicrobial properties. Notably, AgCu NPs with smaller average particle sizes demonstrated weaker antimicrobial activity, as assessed by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) measurement, contrary to conventional expectations. However, larger average particle-sized AgCu NPs showed superior antimicrobial effectiveness. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed that nearly all larger particle-sized nanoparticles were AgCu nanoalloys. In contrast, the smaller particle-sized samples consisted of both AgCu alloys and monometallic Ag and Cu NPs. The fraction of Ag ions (relative to the total silver amount) in the larger AgCu NPs was found to be around 9%, compared to only 5% in that of the smaller AgCu NPs. This indicates that the AgCu alloy content significantly contributes to enhanced antibacterial efficacy, as a higher AgCu content results in the increased release of Ag ions. These findings suggest that the enhanced antimicrobial efficacy of AgCu NPs is primarily attributed to their chemical composition and phase structures, rather than the size of the nanoparticles.

In our research, we explored a natural substance called Oxymatrine, found in a traditional Chinese medicinal plant, to fight against a common bird flu virus known as H9N2. This virus not only affects birds but can also pose a threat to human health. We focused on how this natural compound can help in stopping the virus from spreading in cells that line the lungs of birds and potentially humans. Our findings show that Oxymatrine can both directly block the virus and boost the body’s immune response against it. This dual-action mechanism is particularly interesting because it indicates that Oxymatrine might be a useful tool in developing new ways to prevent and treat this type of bird flu. Understanding how Oxymatrine works against the H9N2 virus could lead to safer and more natural ways to combat viral infections in animals and humans, contributing to the health and well-being of society. The H9N2 Avian Influenza Virus (AIV) is a persistent health threat because of its rapid mutation rate and the limited efficacy of vaccines, underscoring the urgent need for innovative therapies. This study investigated the H9N2 AIV antiviral properties of Oxymatrine (OMT), a compound derived from traditional Chinese medicine, particularly focusing on its interaction with pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (PMVECs). Employing an array of in vitro assays, including 50% tissue culture infectious dose, Cell Counting Kit-8, reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and Western blot, we systematically elucidated the multifaceted effects of OMT. OMT dose-dependently inhibited critical antiviral proteins (PKR and Mx1) and modulated the expression of type I interferons and key cytokines (IFN-α, IFN-β, IL-6, and TNF-α), thereby affecting TLR3 signaling and its downstream elements (NF-κB and IRF-3). OMT’s antiviral efficacy extended beyond TLR3-mediated responses, suggesting its potential as a versatile antiviral agent. This study not only contributes to the growing body of research on the use of natural compounds as antiviral agents but also underscores the importance of further investigating the broader application of OMT for combating viral infections.

The mechanism of ammonia formation during the pyrolysis of proteins in biomass is currently unclear. To further investigate this issue, this study employed the AMS 2023.104 software to select proteins (actual proteins) as the model compounds and the amino acids contained within them (assembled amino acids) as the comparative models. ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to explore the nitrogen transformation and NH3 generation mechanisms in three-phase products (char, tar, and gas) during protein pyrolysis. The research results revealed several key findings. Regardless of whether the model compounds are actual proteins or assembled amino acids, NH3 is the primary nitrogen-containing product during pyrolysis. However, as the temperature rises to higher levels, such as 2000 K and 2500 K, the amount of NH3 decreases significantly in the later stages of pyrolysis, indicating that it is being converted into other nitrogen-bearing species, such as HCN and N2. Simultaneously, we also observed significant differences between the pyrolysis processes of actual proteins and assembled amino acids. Notably, at 2000 K, the amount of NH3 generated from the pyrolysis of assembled amino acids was twice that of actual proteins. This discrepancy mainly stems from the inherent structural differences between proteins and amino acids. In proteins, nitrogen is predominantly present in a network-like structure (NH-N), which shields it from direct external exposure, thus requiring more energy for nitrogen to participate in pyrolysis reactions, making it more difficult for NH3 to form. Conversely, assembled amino acids can release NH3 through a simpler deamination process, leading to a significant increase in NH3 production during their pyrolysis.

The fungus Xylaria sp. Z184, harvested from the leaves of Fallopia convolvulus (L.) Á. Löve, has been isolated for the first time. Chemical investigation on the methanol extract of the culture broth of the titles strain led to the discovery of three new pyranone derivatives, called fallopiaxylaresters A–C (1–3), and a new bisabolane-type sesquiterpenoid, named fallopiaxylarol A (4), along with the first complete set of spectroscopic data for the previously reported pestalotiopyrone M (5). Known pyranone derivatives (6–11), sesquiterpenoids (12–14), isocoumarin derivatives (15–17), and an aromatic allenic ether (18) were also co-isolated in this study. All new structures were elucidated by the interpretation of HRESIMS, 1D, 2D NMR spectroscopy, and quantum chemical computation approach. The in vitro antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and α-glucosidase-inhibitory activities of the selected compounds and the crude extract were evaluated. The extract was shown to inhibit nitric oxide (NO) production induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in murine RAW264.7 macrophage cells, with an inhibition rate of 77.28 ± 0.82% at a concentration of 50 μg/mL. The compounds 5, 7, and 8 displayed weak antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus areus subsp. aureus at a concentration of 100 μM.

Flower color is an important ornamental feature that is often modulated by the contents of flavonoids. Chalcone synthase is the first key enzyme in the biosynthesis of flavonoids, but little is known about the role of R. delavayi CHS in flavonoid biosynthesis. In this paper, three CHS genes (RdCHS1-3) were successfully cloned from R. delavayi flowers. According to multiple sequence alignment and a phylogenetic analysis, only RdCHS1 contained all the highly conserved and important residues, which was classified into the cluster of bona fide CHSs. RdCHS1 was then subjected to further functional analysis. Real-time PCR analysis revealed that the transcripts of RdCHS1 were the highest in the leaves and lowest in the roots; this did not match the anthocyanin accumulation patterns during flower development. Biochemical characterization displayed that RdCHS1 could catalyze p-coumaroyl-CoA and malonyl-CoA molecules to produce naringenin chalcone. The physiological function of RdCHS1 was checked in Arabidopsis mutants and tobacco, and the results showed that RdCHS1 transgenes could recover the color phenotypes of the tt4 mutant and caused the tobacco flower color to change from pink to dark pink through modulating the expressions of endogenous structural and regulatory genes in the tobacco. All these results demonstrate that RdCHS1 fulfills the function of a bona fide CHS and contributes to flavonoid biosynthesis in R. delavayi.

The pretreatment for torrefaction impacts the performance of biomass fuels and operational costs. Given their diversity, it is crucial to determine the optimal torrefaction conditions for different types of biomass. In this study, three typical solid biofuels, corn stover (CS), agaric fungus bran (AFB), and spent coffee grounds (SCGs), were prepared using fluidized bed torrefaction. The thermal stability of different fuels was extensively discussed and a novel comprehensive fuel index, “displacement level”, was analyzed. The functional groups, pore structures, and microstructural differences between the three raw materials and the optimally torrefied biochar were thoroughly characterized. Finally, the biomass fuel consumption for household heating and water supply was calculated. The results showed that the optimal torrefaction temperatures for CS, AFB, and SCGs were 240, 280, and 280 °C, respectively, with comprehensive quality rankings of the optimal torrefied biochar of AFB (260) > SCG (252) > CS (248). Additionally, the economic costs of the optimally torrefied biochar were reduced by 7.03–19.32%. The results indicated that the displacement level is an index universally applicable to the preparation of solid fuels through biomass torrefaction. AFB is the most suitable solid fuel to be upgraded through torrefaction and has the potential to replace coal.

The meta-diamide (m-diamide) insecticide, Broflanilide, was characterized by its high efficiency, low toxicity and lack of cross-resistance with traditional GABA receptors. In accordance with the principles of drug molecular design, easily derivable sulfur with diverse bioactivities was introduced while leading with the parent Broflanilide. Twelve novel m-diamide target compounds containing sulfide derivatives were synthesized through exploration guided by the literature. Their structures were confirmed by melting points, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS. Insecticidal activity assessments revealed that most target compounds A–D exhibited 100% lethality against Plutella xylostella (P. xylostella) and Aphis craccivora Koch (A. craccivora) at 500 mg·L−1. Notably, for P. xylostella, compounds C-2, C-3, C-4 and D-2 demonstrated 60.00–100.00% insecticidal activity even at a concentration as low as 0.625 mg·L−1. As determined by structure–activity relationship (SAR) analysis, compounds with R1 = CH3 and R2 = Br (B-1, C-2 and D-2) and sulfoxide compound C-3 contained 100.00% lethality against A. craccivora at 500 mg·L−1, surpassing the lethality when leading with the parent Broflanilide in terms of efficacy. Consequently, it can be inferred that the sulfoxide compound (C-3) requires further investigation as a potential active molecule for new insecticides. These explorations provide valuable references for future research on the synthesis and insecticidal activities of sulfide-containing m-diamide compounds.

Yak whey protein concentrates (YWPCs) have good functional properties, but there is still a gap in the study of their peptides. In this study, peptides were obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis, and the bioactivity of each ultrafiltration fraction was evaluated using an optimal process. YWPCs were isolated and purified from yak milk as the raw material. Alkaline protease, trypsin, and papain were used to hydrolyze YWPCs. The protease with the highest degree of hydrolysis (DH) and peptide concentration was selected as the most suitable enzyme. The effects of pH, temperature, time, and the enzyme-to-substrate ratio (E/S) on the DH and peptide concentration were investigated, and response surface methodology was utilized to optimize the hydrolysis process. The hydrolysate was separated using ultrafiltration membranes with molecular weight cut-offs of 10 kDa, 5 kDa, 3 kDa, and 1 kDa. The bioactivity of each ultrafiltration component was analyzed, including the inhibition rates of α-amylase and xanthine oxidase (XOD) activities and the scavenging rates of 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) cation radicals. The results indicated that alkaline protease was the best enzyme for hydrolyzing YWPCs. The peptide concentration in the YWPC hydrolysate was the highest (17.21 mg/mL) at a pH of 8 and a concentration of 7500 U/g, after 2.5 h at 62 °C. The enzymatic hydrolysate was ultrafiltered to yield four peptide fractions, of which the

Stabilizing LiCoO2 (LCO) at 4.5 V rather than the common 4.2 V is important for the high specific capacity. In this study, we developed a simple and efficient way to improve the stability of LiCoO2 at high voltages. After a simple sol–gel method, we introduced trifluoroacetic acid (TA) to the surface of LCO via an afterwards calcination. Meanwhile, the TA reacted with residual lithium on the surface of LCO, further leading to the formation of uniform LiF nanoshells. The LiF nanoshells could effectively restrict the interfacial side reaction, hinder the transition metal dissolution and thus achieve a stable cathode–electrolyte interface at high working-voltages. As a result, the LCO@LiF demonstrated a much superior cycling stability with a capacity retention ratio of 83.54% after 100 cycles compared with the bare ones (43.3% for capacity retention), as well as high rate performances. Notably, LiF coating layers endow LCO with excellent high-temperature performances and outstanding full-cell performances. This work provides a simple and effective way to prepare stable LCO materials working at a high voltage.

Ardisia crenata Sims, an important ethnic medicine, is recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia for treating laryngeal diseases and upper respiratory tract infections. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of extracts and potential antimicrobial compounds of A. crenata Sims. It was found that the roots of A. crenata Sims have a potential inhibitory effect on Candida albicans and Aspergillus flavus, with MICs of 1.56 mg/mL and 0.39 mg/mL, and the leaves of A. crenata Sims have a potential inhibitory effect on Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, with MICs of 3.12 mg/mL and 6.77 mg/mL, respectively. Meanwhile, five compounds including one catechin and four bergenins were obtained from roots. These components were identified on the fingerprint spectrum, representing chromatographic peaks 16, 21, 22, 23, and 25, respectively. Among these, 11-β-d-glucopyranosyl-bergenin and (−)-gallocatechin showed potential inhibition for Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa with MIC of 0.26 and 0.33 mg/mL, respectively. The roots, stems, and leaves of A. crenata Sims are very similar in chemical composition, with large differences in content. Principal component analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) showed that 16 batches of A. crenata Sims could be divided into four main production areas: Guizhou, Jiangsu, Guangxi, and Jiangxi. Furthermore, molecular docking results showed that 11-β-d-glucopyranosyl-bergenin had a better affinity for Casein lytic proteinase P (ClpP), and (−)-gallocatechin possessed a strong affinity for LasA hydrolysis protease and LasB elastase. These findings suggest catechin and bergenins from A. crenata Sims can be used as antimicrobial activity molecules.

The combustion behavior of various propellant samples, including double-base propellants, pressed nitramine powders, and modified double-base propellants containing nitramine, was examined using OH-PLIF technology. The combustion process took place within a combustion chamber, and images capturing the flame at the moment of stable combustion were selected for further analysis. The distribution and production rate of OH radicals in both the double-base propellant and the nitramine-modified double-base propellant were simulated using Chemkin-17.0 software. The outcomes from both the experimental and simulation studies revealed that the concentration of OH radicals increased with a higher content of NG in the double-base propellant. In the modified double-base propellant containing RDX, the OH radical concentration decreased as the RDX content increased, with these tendencies of change aligning closely with the simulation results.

Corn silk (Zea mays L.) is the stigma of an annual gramineous plant named corn, which is distributed in many regions worldwide and has a long history of medicinal use. In recent years, with the sustainable development of traditional Chinese medicine, studies of corn silk based on modern technologies, such as GC–MS, LC–MS, and other analytical means, have offered more comprehensive analyses. Phytochemistry studies have shown that the main bioactive components in corn silk include flavonoids, polyphenols, phenolic acids, fatty acids, and terpenoids. Pharmacological studies have shown that corn silk extract has various pharmacological effects, such as reducing blood lipids, lowering blood pressure, regulating blood sugar levels, anti-inflammatory effects, and anti-oxidation effects. In this paper, the related research on corn silk from the past few years is summarized to provide a theoretical reference for the further development and utilization of corn silk.

A simple strategy was adopted for the preparation of an antimicrobial natural rubber/graphene oxide (NR/GO) composite film modified through the use of zwitterionic polymer brushes. An NR/GO composite film with antibacterial properties was prepared using a water-based solution-casting method. The composited GO was dispersed uniformly in the NR matrix and compensated for mechanical loss in the process of modification. Based on the high bromination activity of α–H in the structure of cis-polyisoprene, the composite films were brominated on the surface through the use of N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) under the irradiation of a 40 W tungsten lamp. Polymerization was carried out on the brominated films using sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) as a monomer via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). The NR/GO composite films modified using polymer brushes (PSBMAs) exhibited 99.99% antimicrobial activity for resistance to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. A novel polymer modification strategy for NR composite materials was established effectively, and the enhanced antimicrobial properties expand the application prospects in the medical field.

Organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) have been widely used in polymeric materials owing to their flame retardant and plasticizing effects. Investigating the fragmentation pathway of OPFRs is of great necessity for further discovering and identifying novel pollutants using orbitrap-based high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). A total of 25 OPFRs, including alkyl, halogenated, and aromatic types, were analyzed in this study. The fragmentation pathways of the OPFRs were investigated using orbitrap-based HRMS with high-energy collision dissociation (HCD) in positive mode. The major fragmentation pathways for the three types of OPFRs are greatly affected by the substituents. In detail, the alkyl and halogenated OPFRs underwent three McLafferty hydrogen rearrangements, wherein the substituents were gradually cleaved to form the structurally stable [H4PO4]+ (m/z = 98.9845) ions. In contrast, the aromatic OPFRs would cleave not only the C-O bond but also the P-O bond, depending on the substituents, to form fragment ions such as [C6H7O]+ (m/z = 95.0495) or [C7H7]+ (m/z = 91.0530), among others. Using HRMS improved the accuracy of fragment ion identification, and the pathway became more evident. These fragmentation laws can provide identification information in pollutant screening work and theoretical references for the structural characterization of compounds with diverse substituent structures.

Photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) water decomposition provides a promising method for converting solar energy into green hydrogen energy. Indeed, significant advances and improvements have been made in various fundamental aspects for cutting-edge applications, such as water splitting and hydrogen production. However, the fairly low PEC efficiency of water decomposition by a semiconductor photoelectrode and photocorrosion seriously restrict the practical application of photoelectrochemistry. In this review, the mechanisms of PEC water decomposition are first introduced to provide a solid understanding of the PEC process and ensure that this review is accessible to a wide range of readers. Afterwards, notable achievements to date are outlined, and unique approaches involving promising semiconductor materials for efficient PEC hydrogen production, including metal oxide, sulfide, and graphite-phase carbon nitride, are described. Finally, four strategies which can effectively improve the hydrogen production rate—morphological control, doping, heterojunction, and surface modification—are discussed.

Accurate modeling of nonbonded interactions between protein kinases and their small molecule inhibitors is essential for structure-based drug design. Quantum chemical methods such as density functional theory (DFT) hold significant promise for quantifying the strengths of these key protein–ligand interactions. However, the accuracy of DFT methods can vary substantially depending on the choice of exchange–correlation functionals and associated basis sets. In this study, a comprehensive benchmarking of nine widely used DFT methods was carried out to identify an optimal approach for quantitative modeling of nonbonded interactions, balancing both accuracy and computational efficiency. From a database of 2139 kinase-inhibitor crystal structures, a diverse library of 49 nonbonded interaction motifs was extracted, encompassing CH–π, π–π stacking, cation–π, hydrogen bonding, and salt bridge interactions. The strengths of nonbonded interaction energies for all 49 motifs were calculated at the advanced CCSD(T)/CBS level of theory, which serve as references for a systematic benchmarking of BLYP, TPSS, B97, ωB97X, B3LYP, M062X, PW6B95, B2PLYP, and PWPB95 functionals with D3BJ dispersion correction alongside def2-SVP, def2-TZVP, and def2-QZVP basis sets. The RI, RIJK, and RIJCOSX approximations were used for selected functionals. It was found that the B3LYP/def2-TZVP and RIJK RI-B2PLYP/def2-QZVP methods delivered the best combination of accuracy and computational efficiency, making them well-suited for efficient modeling of nonbonded interactions responsible for molecular recognition of protein kinase inhibitors in their targets.

In this paper, a low-temperature thick oil demulsifier with high polarity was prepared by introducing ethylene oxide, propylene oxide block, and butylene oxide using m-diphenol as a starting agent. The main reasons for the difficulty involved in the low-temperature emulsification of extractive fluids were explained by analyzing the synthetic influencing factors and infrared spectra of the star comb polymer (PR-D2) and by analyzing the four fractions, interfacial energies, and zeta potentials of crude oils from the Chun and Gao fields. The effects of PR-D2 surfactant on the emulsification performance of crude oil recovery fluids were investigated via indoor and field experiments. The experimental results indicate that the optimal synthesis conditions for this emulsion breaker are as follows: a quality ratio of ionic reaction intermediates and meso-diphenol of R = 10:1; 1 g of the initiator; a polymerization temperature of 80 °C; and a reaction time of 8 h. Colloidal asphaltenes in the crude oil were the main factor hindering the low-temperature demulsification of the Gao oilfield’s extractive fluids, and the reason for the demulsification difficulty of the extractive fluids in the Chun oilfield is that the temperature of demulsification is lower than the wax precipitation point. The demulsification rate of the Chun oilfield’s extractive fluids reached more than 98% when the PR-D2 concentration reached 150 mg/L at 43 °C. The demulsification rate of the Gao oilfield’s extractive fluids reached more than 98% at a PR-D2 concentration of 150 mg/L at 65 °C. The field experiments show that the Chun oilfield’s extractive fluids can still demulsify after the temperature is reduced to 43 °C in winter. The emulsification temperature of the Gao oilfield’s extractive fluids was reduced from 73 °C to 68 °C, with an excellent demulsification effect.

Cyclophosphamide (CTX) is a broad-spectrum alkylated antitumor drug. It is clinically used in the treatment of a variety of cancers, and renal toxicity is one of the adverse reactions after long-term or repeated use, which not only limits the therapeutic effect of CTX, but also increases the probability of kidney lesions. The total flavonoids of Epimedium stem and leaf (EBF) and Icariin (ICA) are the main medicinal components of Epimedium, and ICA is one of the main active substances in EBF. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that EBF has a variety of biological activities such as improving osteoporosis, promoting cell proliferation, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, etc. However, few studies have been conducted on the nephrotoxicity caused by optimized CTX extraction, and protein-ligand binding has not been involved. This research, through the response surface optimization extraction of EBF, obtained the best extraction conditions: ethanol concentration was 60%, solid-liquid ratio of 25:1, ultrasonic time was about 25 min. Combined with mass spectrometry (MS) analysis, EBF contained ICA, ichopidin A, ichopidin B, ichopidin C, and other components. In this study, we adopted a computational chemistry method called molecular docking, and the results show that Icariin was well bound to the antioxidant target proteins KEAP1 and NRF2, and the anti-inflammatory target proteins COX-2 and NF-κB, with free binding energies of −9.8 kcal/mol, −11.0 kcal/mol, −10.0 kcal/mol, and −8.1 kcal/mol, respectively. To study the protective effect of EBF on the nephrotoxicity of CTX, 40 male Kunming mice (weight 18 ± 22) were injected with CTX (80 mg/kg) for 7 days to establish the nephrotoxicity model and were treated with EBF (50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg) for 8 days by gavage. After CTX administration, MDA, BUN, Cre, and IL-6 levels in serum increased, MDA increased in kidney, GPT/ALT and IL-6 increased in liver, and IL-6 increased in spleen and was significant ((p < 0.05 or (p < 0.01)). Histopathological observation showed that renal cortex glomerular atrophy necrosis, medullary inflammatory cell infiltration, and other lesions. After administration of EBF, CTX-induced increase in serum level of related indexes was reduced, and MDA in kidney, GPT/ALT and IL-6 in liver, and IL-6 in spleen were increased. At the same time, histopathological findings showed that the necrosis of medullary and corticorenal tubular epithelium was relieved at EBF (50 mg/kg) dose compared with the CTX group, and the glomerular tubular necrosis gradually became normal at EBF (100 mg/kg) dose. Western blot analysis of Keap1 and Nrf2 protein expression in kidney tissue showed that compared with model CTX group, the drug administration group could alleviate the high expression of Keap1 protein and low expression of Nrf2 protein in kidney tissue. Conclusion: After the optimal extraction of total flavonoids from the stems and leaves of Epimedium, the molecular docking technique combined with animal experiments suggested that the effective component of the total flavonoids of Epimedium might activate the Keap1-Nrf2 signaling pathway after treatment to reduce the inflammation and oxidative stress of kidney tissue, so as to reduce kidney damage and improve kidney function. Therefore, EBF may become a new natural protective agent for CTX chemotherapy in the future.

Oxidative stress is caused by an imbalance between reactive oxygen species and antioxidant levels. Current research suggests that oxidative stress is one of the key factors in the development of many chronic diseases, and it has been a concern for many years. Many natural compounds have been studied for their special free-radical-scavenging properties. The major chemical constituents of the leaves of Diospyros kaki are flavonoids and triterpenoids, both of which are potential antioxidants that can prevent damage caused by reactive oxygen species or reactive nitrogen species and ameliorate diseases associated with oxidative stress. In addition to the major constituents such as flavonoids and triterpenoids, the leaves of Diospyros kaki include compounds such as phenylpropanoids, alkaloids, phenolic acids, and terpenes. Studies have shown these compounds have certain antioxidant and neuroprotective activities. Experiments have shown that flavonoids or the extracts from the leaves of Diospyros kaki have a variety of good pharmacological activities, which could activate oxidative stress and mitochondrial apoptosis, inhibit the proliferation of human prostate cancer cells and induce apoptosis. It also could achieve the effect of anti-cancer cell proliferation and induce apoptosis by regulating oxidative stress. The main chemical substance of the leaves of Diospyros kaki regulating oxidative stress may be these multi-hydroxyl structure compounds. These natural products exhibit significant antioxidant activity and are an important basis for the leaves of Diospyros kaki to treat human diseases by regulating oxidative stress. This review summarizes the structural types of natural products in the leaves of Diospyros kaki and elaborates the mechanism of the leaves of Diospyros kaki in neuroprotection, anti-diabetes, renal protection, retinal degenerative diseases, and anti-cancer from a new perspective of oxidative stress, including how it supplements other pharmacological effects. The chemical constituents and pharmacological effects of the leaves of Diospyros kaki are summarized in this paper. The relationship between the chemical components in the leaves of Diospyros kaki and their pharmacological effects is summarized from the perspective of oxidative stress. This review provides a reference for the study of natural anti-oxidative stress drugs.

Neurological-related disorders are diseases that affect the body’s neurons or peripheral nerve tissue, such as Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The development of neurological disorders can cause serious harm to the quality of life and functioning of the patient. The use of traditional therapeutic agents such as dopamine-promoting drugs, anticholinergic drugs, cholinesterase inhibitors, and NMDA receptor antagonists is often accompanied by a series of side effects such as drug resistance, cardiac arrhythmia, liver function abnormalities, and blurred vision. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find a therapeutic drug with a high safety profile and few side effects. Herbal medicines are rich in active ingredients that are natural macromolecules. Ginsenoside is the main active ingredient of ginseng, which has a variety of pharmacological effects and is considered to have potential value in the treatment of human diseases. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that ginsenosides Rg2 and Rh1 have strong pharmacological activities in the nervous system, with protective effects on nerve cells, improved resistance to neuronal injury, modulation of neural activity, resistance to cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury, improvement of brain damage after eclampsia hemorrhage, improvement of memory and cognitive deficits, treatment of AD and vascular dementia, alleviation of anxiety, pain, and inhibition of ionic-like behavior. In this article, we searched the pharmacological research literature of Rg2 and Rh1 in the field of neurological diseases, summarized the latest research progress of the two ginsenosides, and reviewed the pharmacological effects and mechanisms of Rg2 and Rh1, which provided a new way of thinking for the research of the active ingredients in ginseng anti-neurological diseases and the development of new drugs.

The double-layer PVDF-PVC (D-PP/PP) super-hydrophobic composite membrane was prepared by the coating immersion phase separation method to enhance the mechanical properties of the composite membrane. The D-PP/PP super-hydrophobic membrane was prepared using the casting solution concentration of 12 wt% PVDF-PVC composite membrane as basement and 4% casting of PVDF-PVC coating. The contact angle of the D-PP/PP membrane was 150.4 ± 0.3°, and the scanning electron microscope showed that the surface of the D-PP/PP membrane was covered by a cross-linked micro–nano microsphere. The mechanical properties showed that the maximum tensile force of the D-PP/PP composite membrane was 2.34 N, which was 19.4% higher than that of PVDF-PVC (1.96 N). Nano-graphite was added to the coating layer in the experiment. The prepared double-layer PVDF-PVC-nano-graphite/PVDF-PVC (D-PPG/PP) composite membrane reached 153.7 ± 0.5°, the contact angle increasing by 3.3°. The SEM comparison showed that the D-PPG/PP composite membrane had a more obvious micro–nano level microsphere layer. The mechanical properties are also superior. By preparing the D-PP/PP membrane, the mechanical properties of the membrane were improved, and the super-hydrophobic property of the coating was also obtained. At the same time, it was found that adding nano-graphite to the coating layer can better improve the hydrophobic, mechanical, and self-cleaning properties of the D-PP/PP composite membrane.

Pseudorabies (PR) is an acute and severe infectious disease caused by pseudorabies virus (PRV). Once the virus infects pigs, it is difficult to eliminate, resulting in major economic losses to the global pig industry. In addition, reports of human infection with PRV suggest that the virus is a potential threat to human health; thus, its significance to public health should be considered. In this paper, the anti-PRV activities of emodin in vitro and in vivo, and its mechanism of action were studied. The results showed that emodin inhibited the proliferation of PRV in PK15 cells in a dose-dependent manner, with an IC50 of 0.127 mg/mL and a selection index of 5.52. The addition of emodin at different stages of viral infection showed that emodin inhibited intracellular replication. Emodin significantly inhibited the expression of the IE180, EP0, UL29, UL44, US6, and UL27 genes of PRV within 48 h. Emodin also significantly inhibited the expression of PRV gB and gD proteins. The molecular docking results suggested that emodin might form hydrogen bonds with PRV gB and gD proteins and affect the structure of viral proteins. Emodin effectively inhibited the apoptosis induced by PRV infection. Moreover, emodin showed a good protective effect on PRV-infected mice. During the experimental period, all the control PRV-infected mice died resulting in a survival rate of 0%, while the survival rate of emodin-treated mice was 28.5%. Emodin also significantly inhibited the replication of PRV in the heart, liver, brain, kidneys and lungs of mice and alleviated tissue and organ damage caused by PRV infection. Emodin was able to combat viral infection by regulating the levels of the cytokines TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-6, and IL-4 in the sera of infected mice. These results indicate that emodin has good anti-PRV activity in vitro and in vivo, and is expected to be a new agent for the prevention and control of PRV infection.

An environmentally friendly pore size-controlled, superhydrophobic polylactic acid (PLA) membrane was successfully prepared by a simpler freeze solidification phase separation method (FSPS) and solution impregnation, which has application prospects in the field of oil–water separation. The pore size and structure of the membrane were adjusted by different solvent ratios and solution impregnation ratios. The PLA-FSPS membrane after solution impregnation (S-PLA-FSPS) had the characteristics of uniform pore size, superhydrophobicity and super lipophilicity, its surface roughness Ra was 338 nm, and the contact angle to water was 151°. The S-PLA-FSPS membrane was used for the oil–water separation. The membrane oil flux reached 16,084 L·m−2·h−1, and the water separation efficiency was 99.7%, which was much higher than that of other oil–water separation materials. In addition, the S-PLA-FSPS membrane could also be applied for the adsorption and removal of oil slicks and underwater heavy oil. The S-PLA-FSPS membrane has great application potential in the field of oil–water separation.

The effects of insoluble dietary fiber from fresh corn bracts modified by dynamic high-pressure micro-fluidization (DHPM) on the pathological characteristics of obesity, intestinal microflora distribution and production of short-chain fatty acids in high-fat-diet C57BL/6 mice were evaluated. The results show that the DHPM-modified dietary fiber from fresh corn bracts significantly reduces weight gain, insulin resistance and oxidative damage caused by a high-fat diet, and promotes the production of SCFAs, especially acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid. These modified dietary fibers also change the proportion of different types of bacteria in the intestinal microflora of mice, reduce the ratio of Firmicutes and Bacteroidota and promote the proliferation of Bifidobacteriales. Therefore, the DHPM-modified dietary fiber from fresh corn bracts can be used as a good intestinal microbiota regulator to promote intestinal health, thereby achieving the role of preventing and treating obesity.

Luteolin from Patrinia villosa exhibits strong antiviral activity. Here, the conditions for extracting and enriching luteolin from P. villosa were optimized. Response surface methodology was used to determine the optimal extraction parameters in terms of reflux time, solvent ratio, extraction temperature, material-to-liquid ratio, and number of extractions. Thereafter, a macroporous resin method was used to enrich luteolin from P. villosa. Finally, the following optimal extraction and enrichment conditions were established: an extraction time of 43.00 min, a methanol/hydrochloric acid solvent ratio of 13:1, an extraction temperature of 77.60 °C, a material/liquid ratio of 1:22, and a total of two extractions. NKA-9 was determined to be the most appropriate resin for enrichment. The ideal adsorption conditions were as follows: a pH of 5.0, a temperature of 25 °C, an initial luteolin concentration of 19.58 µg/mL, a sample loading volume of 2.9 BV, and a sample loading rate of 2 BV/h. The ideal desorption conditions were as follows: distilled water, 30% ethanol and 80% ethanol elution, and 5 BV at a flow rate of 2 BV/h. After optimization, the enrichment recovery rate was 80.06% and the luteolin content increased 3.8-fold. Additionally, the enriched product exhibited a significant inhibitory effect on PRV (Porcine pseudorabies virus) in vitro and in vivo, providing data for developing and applying luteolin from P. villosa.

Fluorinated organic compounds have superior physicochemical properties than general organic compounds due to the strong C-F single bond; they are widely used in medicine, biology, pesticides, and materials science. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the physicochemical properties of fluorinated organic compounds, fluorinated aromatic compounds have been investigated by various spectroscopic techniques. 2-fluorobenzonitrile and 3-fluorobenzonitrile are important fine chemical intermediates and their excited state S1 and cationic ground state D0 vibrational features remain unknown. In this paper, we used two-color resonance two photon ionization (2-color REMPI) and mass analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy to study S1 and D0 state vibrational features of 2-fluorobenzonitrile and 3-fluorobenzonitrile. The precise excitation energy (band origin) and adiabatic ionization energy were determined to be 36,028 ± 2 cm−1 and 78,650 ± 5 cm−1 for 2-fluorobenzonitrile and 35,989 ± 2 cm−1 and 78,873 ± 5 cm−1 for 3-fluorobenzonitrile, respectively. The density functional theory (DFT) at the levels of RB3LYP/aug-cc-pvtz, TD-B3LYP/aug-cc-pvtz, and UB3LYP/aug-cc-pvtz were used to calculate the stable structures and vibrational frequencies for the ground state S0, excited state S1, and cationic ground state D0, respectively. Franck–Condon spectral simulations for transitions of S1 ← S0 and D0 ← S1 were performed based on the above DFT calculations. The theoretical and experimental results were in good agreement. The observed vibrational features in S1 and D0 states were assigned according to the simulated spectra and the comparison with structurally similar molecules. Several experimental findings and molecular features were discussed in detail.

A simple and efficient hydroxide-mediated SNAr rearrangement was reported to synthesize new depside derivatives containing the diaryl ether skeleton from the natural product barbatic acid. The prepared compounds were determined using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HRMS, and X-ray crystallographic analysis and were also screened in vitro for cytotoxicity against three cancer cell lines and one normal cell line. The evaluation results showed that compound 3b possessed the best antiproliferative activity against liver cancer HepG2 cell line and low toxicity, which made it worth further study.

This paper presents a highly efficient porous adsorbent PGMA-N prepared through a series of amination reactions between polyglycidyl methacrylate (PGMA) and different polyamines. The obtained polymeric porous materials were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), specific surface area test (BET), and elemental analysis (EA). Thereinto, the PGMA-EDA porous adsorbent exhibited excellent ability to synergistically remove Cu(II) ions and sulfamethoxazole from aqueous solutions. Moreover, we studied the effects of pH, contact time, temperature, and initial concentration of pollutants on the adsorption performance of the adsorbent. The experimental results showed that the adsorption process of Cu(II) followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity of PGMA-EDA for Cu(II) ions was 0.794 mmol/g. These results indicate that PGMA-EDA porous adsorbent has great potential for application in treating wastewater coexisting with heavy metals and antibiotics.

Barbatic acid, a compound isolated from lichen, has demonstrated a variety of biological activities. In this study, a series of esters based on barbatic acid (6a–q′) were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for their diuretic and litholytic activity at a concentration of 100 μmol/L in vitro. All target compounds were characterized using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and HRMS, and the spatial structure of compound 6w was confirmed using X-ray crystallography. The biological results showed that some derivatives, including 6c, 6b′, and 6f′, exhibited potent diuretic activity, and 6j and 6m displayed promising litholytic activity. Molecular docking studies further suggested that 6b′ had an optimal binding affinity to WNK1 kinases related to diuresis, while 6j could bind to the bicarbonate transporter CaSR through a variety of forces. These findings indicate that some barbatic acid derivatives could be further developed into novel diuretic agents.

Ionizable lipid-containing lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) as a non-viral vector with good safety and potency have been considered as an ideal delivery system for gene therapy. The screening of ionizable lipid libraries with common features but diverse structures holds the promise of finding new candidates for LNPs to deliver different nucleic acid drugs such as messenger RNAs (mRNAs). Chemical strategies for the facile construction of ionizable lipid libraries with diverse structure are in high demand. Here, we report on the ionizable lipids containing the triazole moiety prepared by the copper-catalyzed alkyne–azide click reaction (CuAAC). We demonstrated that these lipids served well as the major component of LNPs, in order to encapsulate mRNA using luciferase mRNA as the model system. Thus, this study shows the potential of click chemistry in the preparation of lipid libraries for LNP assembly and mRNA delivery.

Hydrophobically associating polymers have found widespread applications in many domains due to their unique rheological behavior, which is primarily dictated by the hydrophobe content. However, the low fraction of hydrophobic monomers in polymers makes this parameter’s precise and straightforward measurement difficult. Herein, a variety of hydrophobically associating polyacrylamides (HAPAM) with different alkyl chain lengths (L) and hydrophobic contents ([H]) were prepared by post-modification and accurately characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The maximal fluorescence emission intensity (I) of 8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid, which is sensitive to hydrophobic environments, was then detected in those polymer solutions and shown as a ratio to that in the polymer-free solution (I0). It was found that I/I0 for 0.5 wt% HAPAM can be scaled versus CH, which is a variate related to both L and [H], as I/I0 = 1.15 + 1.09 × 108CH3.42, which was also verified to be applicable for hydrophobic associating hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HHAPAM). This relationship provides a handy method for determining the hydrophobic content of hydrophobically associating polymers, particularly for field applications.

Fully room temperature three-dimensional (3D) shape-reprogrammable, recyclable, and photomobile azobenzene (azo) polymer actuators hold much promise in many photoactuating applications, but their development is challenging. Herein, we report on the efficient synthesis of a series of main-chain azo liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) with such performances via Michael addition polymerization. They have both ester groups and two kinds of hydrogen bond-forming groups (i.e., amide and secondary amino groups) and different flexible spacer length in the backbones. Such poly(ester-amide-secondary amine)s (PEAsAs) show low glass transition temperatures (Tg ≤ 18.4 °C), highly ordered smectic liquid crystalline phases, and reversible photoresponsivity. Their uniaxially oriented fibers fabricated via the melt spinning method exhibit good mechanical strength and photoinduced reversible bending/unbending and large stress at room temperature, which are largely influenced by the flexible spacer length of the polymers. Importantly, all these fibers can be easily reprogrammed under strain at 25 °C into stable fiber springs capable of showing a totally different photomobile mode (i.e., unwinding/winding), mainly owing to the presence of low Tg and both dynamic hydrogen bonding and stable crystalline domains (induced by the uniaxial drawing during the fiber formation). They can also be recycled from a solution at 25 °C. This work not only presents the first azo LCPs with 3D shape reprogrammability, recyclability, and photomobility at room temperature, but also provides some important knowledge of their structure–property relationship, which is useful for designing more advanced photodeformable azo polymers.

The application of fungicides (such as tebuconazole) can impose harmful impacts on the ecosystem and humans. In this study, a new calcium modified water hyacinth-based biochar (WHCBC) was prepared and its effectiveness for removing tebuconazole (TE) via adsorption from water was tested. The results showed that Ca was loaded chemically (CaC2O4) onto the surface of WHCBC. The adsorption capacity of the modified biochar increased by 2.5 times in comparison to that of the unmodified water hyacinth biochar. The enhanced adsorption was attributed to the improved chemical adsorption capacity of the biochar through calcium modification. The adsorption data were better fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that the adsorption process was dominated by monolayer adsorption. It was found that liquid film diffusion was the main rate-limiting step in the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity of WHCBC was 40.5 mg/g for TE. The results indicate that the absorption mechanisms involved surface complexation, hydrogen bonding, and π–π interactions. The inhibitory rate of Cu2+ and Ca2+ on the adsorption of TE by WHCBC were at 4.05–22.8%. In contrast, the presence of other coexisting cations (Cr6+, K+, Mg2+, Pb2+), as well as natural organic matter (humic acid), could promote the adsorption of TE by 4.45–20.9%. In addition, the regeneration rate of WHCBC was able to reach up to 83.3% after five regeneration cycles by desorption stirring with 0.2 mol/L HCl (t = 360 min). The results suggest that WHCBC has a potential in application for removing TE from water.

Pesticides are essential for the development of agriculture. It is urgent to develop green, safe and efficient pesticides. Bisindole alkaloids have unique and concise structures and broad biological activities, which make them an important leading skeleton in the creation of new pesticides. In this work, we synthesized bisindole alkaloid barakacin in a simple seven-step process, and simultaneously designed and synthesized a series of its derivatives. Biological activity research indicated that most of these compounds displayed good antiviral activities against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). Among them, compound 14b exerted a superior inhibitory effect in comparison to commercially available antiviral agent ribavirin, and could be expected to become a novel antiviral candidate. Molecular biology experiments and molecular docking research found that the potential target of compound 14b was TMV coat protein (CP). These compounds also showed broad-spectrum anti-fungal activities against seven kinds of plant fungi.

A general visible light-induced sulfonylation/cyclization to produce quinoline-2,4-diones was achieved under photocatalyst-free conditions. The reactions were performed at room temperature, and various substituents (halogen, alkyl, aryl) and substituted products were obtained with 29 examples within 2 h. Large-scale synthesis and derivatization study via carbonyl reduction to produce easily modified hydroxyl groups and convenient N-Ts deprotection showed the potential utility of this strategy.

Rapid RAFT polymerization can significantly improve production efficiency of PAM with designed molecular structure. This study shows that ideal Reversible Addition–Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT) polymerization of acrylamide is achieved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution at 70 °C. The key to success is the appropriate choice of both a suitable RAFT chain transfer agent (CTA) and initiating species. It is illustrated that dodecyl trithiodimethyl propionic acid (DMPA) is a suitable trithiocarbonate RAFT CTA and is synthesized more easily than other CTAs. Compared to other RAFT processes of polymers, the reaction system shortens reaction time, enhances conversion, and bears all the characteristics of a controlled radical polymerization. The calculation result shows that high concentrations can reduce high conversions, accelerate the reaction rate, and widen molecular weight distributions slightly. This work proposes an excellent approach for rapid synthesis of PAMs with a restricted molecular weight distribution.

Platycodon grandiflorum (PG) is a traditional Chinese medicine with a long history, but its active compounds have not been reported. In this study, novel carbon dots (CDs), PG-based CDs (PGC-CDs), were discovered and prepared from PG via calcinations and characterized by transmission electron microscopy; high-resolution transmission electron microscopy; X-ray diffraction, fluorescence, ultraviolet-visible, and Fourier-transform infrared spectrometers; X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; and high-performance liquid chromatography. In addition, the safety and antioxidant activity of PGC-CDs was evaluated by RAW264.7 cells and LO2 cells. The therapeutic effects of PGC-CDs on hyperbilirubinemia and liver protection were evaluated in a bilirubin-induced hyperbilirubinemia mice model. The experiment confirmed that the diameter range of PGC-CDs was from 1.2 to 3.6 nm. PGC-CDs had no toxicity to RAW264.7 cells and LO2 cells at a concentration of 3.91 to 1000 µg/mL and could reduce the oxidative damage of cells caused by H2O2. PGC-CDs could inhibit the increase levels of bilirubin and inflammation factors and increase the levels of antioxidants and survival rate, demonstrating that PGC-CDs possessed anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidation activity. PGC-CDs may reduce the content of bilirubin, so as to reduce a series of pathological lesions caused by bilirubin, which has potential in treating hyperbilirubinemia and preventing liver damage induced by hyperbilirubinemia.

To remove typical herbicide diuron effectively, a novel sludge-derived modified biochar (SDMBC600) was prepared using sludge-derived biochar (SDBC600) as raw material and Fe-Zn as an activator and modifier in this study. The physico-chemical properties of SDMBC600 and the adsorption behavior of diuron on the SDMBC600 were studied systematically. The adsorption mechanisms as well as practical applications of SDMBC600 were also investigated and examined. The results showed that the SDMBC600 was chemically loaded with Fe-Zn and SDMBC600 had a larger specific surface area (204 m2/g) and pore volume (0.0985 cm3/g). The adsorption of diuron on SDMBC600 followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model, with a maximum diuron adsorption capacity of 17.7 mg/g. The biochar could maintain a good adsorption performance (8.88–12.9 mg/g) under wide water quality conditions, in the pH of 2–10 and with the presence of humic acid and six typical metallic ions of 0–20 mg/L. The adsorption mechanisms of SDMBC600 for diuron were found to include surface complexation, π–π binding, hydrogen bonding, as well as pore filling. Additionally, the SDMBC600 was tested to be very stable with very low Fe and Zn leaching concentration ≤0.203 mg/L in the wide pH range. In addition, the SDMBC600 could maintain a high adsorption capacity (99.6%) after four times of regeneration and therefore, SDMBC600 could have a promising application for diuron removal in water treatment.

Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is a complex disease which causes amenorrhea, hypergonadotropism and infertility in patients no more than 40 years old. Recently, several studies have reported that exosomes have the potential to protect ovarian function using a POI-like mouse model induced by chemotherapy drugs. In this study, the therapeutic potential of exosomes derived from human pluripotent stem cell–mesenchymal stem cells (hiMSC exosomes) was evaluated through a cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced POI-like mouse model. POI-like pathological changes in mice were determined by serum sex-hormones levels and the available number of ovarian follicles. The expression levels of cellular proliferation proteins and apoptosis-related proteins in mouse ovarian granulosa cells were measured using immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry and Western blotting. Notably, a positive effect on the preservation of ovarian function was evidenced, since the loss of follicles in the POI-like mouse ovaries was slowed. Additionally, hiMSC exosomes not only restored the levels of serum sex hormones, but also significantly promoted the proliferation of granulosa cells and inhibited cell apoptosis. The current study suggests that the administration of hiMSC exosomes in the ovaries can preserve female-mouse fertility.

The pathogenicity of foodborne Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a major concern for global public health. This study aimed to optimize the liquid–solid extraction of Wu Wei Zi extracts (WWZE) against Vibrio parahaemolyticus, identify its main components, and investigate the anti-biofilm action. The extraction conditions optimized by the single-factor test and response surface methodology were ethanol concentration of 69%, temperature at 91 °C, time of 143 min, and liquid–solid ratio of 20:1 mL/g. After high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis, it was found that the main active ingredients of WWZE were schisandrol A, schisandrol B, schisantherin A, schisanhenol, and schisandrin A–C. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of WWZE, schisantherin A, and schisandrol B measured by broth microdilution assay was 1.25, 0.625, and 1.25 mg/mL, respectively, while the MIC of the other five compounds was higher than 2.5 mg/mL, indicating that schisantherin A and schizandrol B were the main antibacterial components of WWZE. Crystal violet, Coomassie brilliant blue, Congo red plate, spectrophotometry, and Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assays were used to evaluate the effect of WWZE on the biofilm of V. parahaemolyticus. The results showed that WWZE could exert its dose-dependent potential to effectively inhibit the formation of V. parahaemolyticus biofilm and clear mature biofilm by significantly destroying the cell membrane integrity of V. parahaemolyticus, inhibiting the synthesis of intercellular polysaccharide adhesin (PIA), extracellular DNA secretion, and reducing the metabolic activity of biofilm. This study reported for the first time the favorable anti-biofilm effect of WWZE against V. parahaemolyticus, which provides a basis for deepening the application of WWZE in the preservation of aquatic products.

In this paper, the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of typical antibiotics (norfloxacin (NOR), sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH)) by Ag/CNQDs/g-C3N4 under visible light irradiation was studied. Various strategies were applied to characterize the morphology, structure and photochemical properties of the Ag/CNQDs/g-C3N4 composites. The superior photocatalytic activity of Ag/CNQDs/g-C3N4 was attributed to the wide light response range and the enhancement of interfacial charge transfer. At the same time, the effect of the influence factors (pH, Humic acid (HA) and coexisting ions) on the antibiotics degradation were also investigated. Furthermore, the electron spin resonance (ESR) technology, free radical quenching experiments, LC/MS and DFT theoretical calculations were applied to predict and identify the active groups and intermediates during the photocatalytic degradation process. In addition, Ag/CNQDs/g-C3N4 exhibited the obvious antibacterial effect to Escherichia coli due to the addition of Ag NPs. This study develops a new way for the removal of emerging antibiotic pollution from wastewaters.

Osteoarthritis (OA), a disabling joint inflammatory disease, is characterized by the progressive destruction of cartilage, subchondral bone remodeling, and chronic synovitis. Due to the prolongation of the human lifespan, OA has become a serious public health problem that deserves wide attention. The development of OA is related to numerous factors. Among the factors, nitric oxide (NO) plays a key role in mediating this process. NO is a small gaseous molecule that is widely distributed in the human body, and its synthesis is dependent on NO synthase (NOS). NO plays an important role in various physiological processes such as the regulation of blood volume and nerve conduction. Notably, NO acts as a double-edged sword in inflammatory diseases. Recent studies have shown that NO and its redox derivatives might be closely related to both normal and pathophysiological joint conditions. They can play vital roles as normal bone cell-conditioning agents for osteoclasts, osteoblasts, and chondrocytes. Moreover, they can also induce cartilage catabolism and cell apoptosis. Based on different conditions, the NO/NOS system can act as an anti-inflammatory or pro-inflammatory agent for OA. This review summarizes the studies related to the effects of NO on all normal and OA joints as well as the possible new treatment strategies targeting the NO/NOS system.

With the extension of the human life span and the increasing pressure of women’s work and life, menopause syndrome (MPS) refers to a problem that puzzles almost all women worldwide. Hormone replacement treatment (HRT) can effectively mitigate the symptoms but can also exert adverse effects to a certain extent. Glycyrrhizae radix et rhizome (GRR) is commonly made into a charcoal processed product, termed GRR Carbonisatas (GRRC), for use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). GRRC is widely used to treat MPS and other gynecological diseases. In this study, GRRC was prepared through pyrolysis. Subsequently, GRR-derived carbon dots (GRR-CDs) were purified through dialysis and characterized using transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared, ultraviolet, fluorescence, X-ray photoelectron microscopy, and high-performance liquid chromatography. The effects of GRR-CDs on MPS were examined and confirmed using ovariectomized female mice models. The GRR-CDs ranged from 1.0 to 3.0 nm in diameter and with multiple surface chemical groups, as indicated by the results. GRR-CDs can elevate the estradiol (E2) level of healthy female mice. Moreover, GRR-CDs can alleviate MPS using the typical ovariectomized mice model, as confirmed by elevating the estradiol (E2) level and reducing the degree of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) and raising the degree of uterine atrophy. The results of this study suggested that GRR-CDs may be a potential clinical candidate for the treatment of MPS, which also provides a possibility for nanodrugs to treat hormonal diseases.

Dichalcogenides (disulfides and diselenides), as reactants for organic transformations, are important and widely used because of their potential to react with nucleophiles, electrophilic reagents, and radical precursors. In recent years, in combination with photochemical technology, the application of dichalcogenides as stable radical reagents has opened up a new route to the synthesis of various sulfur- and selenium-containing compounds. In this paper, synthetic strategies for disulfides and diselenides and their applications with photochemical technology are reviewed: (i) Cyclization of dichalcogenides with alkenes and alkynes; (ii) direct selenylation/sulfuration of C−H/C−C/C−N bonds; (iii) visible-light-enabled seleno- and sulfur-bifunctionalization of alkenes/alkynes; and (iv) Direct construction of the C(sp)–S bond. In addition, the scopes, limitations, and mechanisms of some reactions are also described.

Efficient and mild synthetic routes for bioactive natural product derivatives are of current interest for drug discovery. Herein, on the basis of the pharmacophore hybrid strategy, we report a two-step protocol to obtain a series of structurally novel oleanolic acid (OA)-dithiocarbamate conjugates in mild conditions with high yields. Moreover, biological evaluations indicated that representative compound 3e exhibited the most potent and broad-spectrum antiproliferative effects against Panc1, A549, Hep3B, Huh-7, HT-29, and Hela cells with low cytotoxicity on normal cells. In terms of the IC50 values, these OA-dithiocarbamate conjugates were up to 30-fold more potent than the natural product OA. These compounds may be promising hit compounds for the development of novel anti-cancer drugs.
