Mesoionics are neutral compounds that cannot be represented by a fully covalent or purely ionic structure. Among the possible mesomeric structures of these compounds are the diradical electronic configurations. Theoretical and experimental studies indicate that some mesoionic rings are unstable, which may be related to a significant diradical character, that until then is not quantified. In this work, we investigated the diradical character of four heterocycles: 1,3-oxazol-5-one, 1,3-oxazol-5-thione, 1,3-thiazole-5-one, and 1,3-thiazole-5-thione. The oxazoles are known to be significatively less stable than thiazoles. DFT and ab initio single (B3LYP, MP2, CCSD, and QCISD) and ab initio multi-reference (MR-CISD) methods with three basis sets (6-311+G(d), aug-cc-pVDZ, and aug-cc-pVTZ) were employed to assess the diradical character of the investigated systems, in gas phase and DMSO solvent, from three criteria: (i) HOMO-LUMO energy gap, (ii) determination of energy difference between singlet and triplet wave functions, and (iii) quantification of the most significant diradical character (y0, determined in the unrestricted formalism). All of the results showed that the diradical character of the investigated systems is very small. However, the calculated electronic structures made it possible to identify the possible origin of the oxazoles instability, which can help the design of mesoionic systems with the desired properties.

A new synthetic pathway to diradical organic systems is proposed. The effectiveness of this approach was exemplified by the synthesis of a new nitroxide diradical. An interaction of perfluorobiphenyl with lithium tert-butylamide, followed by oxidation of the thusly formed N4,N4&prime, di-tert-butyl-2,2&prime, 3,3&prime, 5,5&prime, 6,6&prime, octafluorobiphenyl-4,4&prime, diamine with meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid, led to the polyfluorinated nitroxide diradical, N,N&prime, (perfluorobiphenyl-4,4&prime, diyl)bis(N-tert-butyl(oxyl)amine), with a good total yield. The polyfluorinated diradical is stable and can be isolated in free form and completely characterized. The structure of the nitroxide diradical was proved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. According to the X-ray diffraction data, the diradical is considerably twisted: dihedral angles between the planes of the nitroxide groups and aromatic cycles are 65.1&deg, and 69.5&deg, and between aromatic cycles 52.6&deg, Quantum chemical calculations predict well-balanced size of both intramolecular and intermolecular exchange interactions with J from &minus, 2.65 to &minus, 1.14 cm&minus, 1.

We report a new boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-bridged bisphenoxyl diradicaloid (2), which showed closed-shell diamagnetic character in less polar solvents such as dichloromethane but open-shell diradical character with paramagnetic activity in the very polar solvent N,N-dimethylformamide. X-ray crystallographic analysis of 2 revealed an anti-parallel stacked dimer structure via intermolecular dipole–dipole interaction, and the observed solvent-dependent diradical character can be explained by the different dihedral angles between the phenoxyl units and the BODIPY bridge, and structural flexibility of the molecule in different solvents. Compound 2 also exhibited solvent-dependent optical and electrochemical properties.

We have developed a Monte Carlo wavefunction (MCWF) approach to the singlet fission (SF) dynamics of linear aggregate models composed of monomers with weak diradical character. As an example, the SF dynamics for a pentacene dimer model is investigated by considering the intermolecular electronic coupling and the vibronic coupling. By comparing with the results by the quantum master equation (QME) approach, we clarify the dependences of the MCWF results on the time step (&Delta, t) and the number of MC trajectories (MC). The SF dynamics by the MCWF approach is found to quantitatively (within an error of 0.02% for SF rate and of 0.005% for double-triplet (TT) yield) reproduce that by the QME approach when using a sufficiently small &Delta, t (~0.03 fs) and a sufficiently large MC (~105). The computational time (treq) in the MCWF approach also exhibits dramatic reduction with increasing the size of aggregates (N-mers) as compared to that in the QME approach, e.g., ~34 times faster at the 20-mer, and the size-dependence of treq shows significant reduction from N5.15 (QME) to N3.09 (MCWF). These results demonstrate the promising high performance of the MCWF approach to the SF dynamics in extended multiradical molecular aggregates including a large number of quantum dissipation, e.g., vibronic coupling, modes.

Dissymmetric 1,3-diphenylallene derivative 3 connected with 4,5-bis(methyl-thio)tetrathiafulvalenyl and 1-pyrenyl substituents was prepared and characterized. The molecular structure was determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Optical resolution was accomplished using a recycling chiral HPLC, and its chiroptical properties were examined with optical rotation and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. The title compound underwent photoracemization under daylight. This behavior was investigated in various solvents and compared with that of 1,3-bis(tetrathiafulvalenyl)allene (bis-TTF-allene) derivative 2. The first-order rate plot of the intensity of the ECD spectra at a given time interval gave the rate of racemization. Mild racemization was observed in polar solvents, whereas a relatively fast rate was obtained in less polar solvents. In addition, the TTF groups of the allene also accelerate the racemization rate. These results suggest that the racemization mechanism occurs via a non-polar diradical structure.

To explore the prospect of molecules involving silicon-silicon multiple bonds as nonlinear optical molecular systems, the relationship between the structure and the second hyperpolarizabilities γ of the oligomeric systems composed of carbon and silicon π-structures is investigated using the density functional theory method. It is found that these compounds indicate intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from the silicon units to the carbon units together with nonzero diradical characters. The γ values of these compounds are shown to be 2-13 times as large as those of the carbon analogs. Although asymmetric carbon and silicon π-systems exhibit comparable enhancement to the corresponding symmetric systems, donor-π-donor structures exhibit remarkable enhancement of γ despite of their both-end short silicon π-chain moieties (donor units). Further analysis using the odd electron and γ densities clarifies that the intermediate diradical character also contributes to the enhancement of γ. These results predict that even short π-conjugated silicone moieties can cause remarkable enhancement of γ by introducing them into π-conjugated hydrocarbon structures.

Irradiation of an acetonitrile solution of 4-aryl-3,5-dibenzoyl-1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives 1a–c and maleimides 2a–c using medium pressure Hg-arc lamp (λ > 290) nm afforded three different cycloadducts 4, 5, 6 in addition to the oxidation products 3. These results indicate that compounds 1a–c undergoes intermolecular cycloaddition reaction through three biradical intermediates and behave photochemically different than those reported previously for the analogous 3,5-diacetyl and 3,5-dicarboxylic acid derivatives. The present work also offers simple access to novel tricyclic and tetracyclic nitrogen heterocyclic ring systems of potential biological and synthetic applications. The structure of the photoproducts was established spectroscopically and by single crystal X-ray crystallography.
