Increasing the consumption of fruit and vegetables can be achieved by creating new products. A promising method seems to be the directed fermentation of vegetables. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of ultrasonic pretreatment (US; 25 kHz; 5 min) and the lactic acid bacteria strain (LAB; Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG) on the quality of fermented pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L.). The pumpkin was inoculated with 5 log CFU/g of specific LAB strain. Fermentation was carried out for 7 days at 35 °C. Some samples were US treated at the washing stage. During fermentation, there was an increase in the LAB count of 3 logarithmic cycles compared to the initial inoculum. For L. rhamnosus, preceding fermentation by US treatment contributed to an increased bacteria count of 4 logarithmic cycles. In the case of fermentation with L. rhamnosus, the lactic acid content was significantly higher than for L. plantarum. These samples are also characterized by higher sensory properties, desirability of taste, and overall desirability. Fermentation contributed to a decrease in carotenoid and phenolic compounds content and an increase in the antioxidant capacity of the pumpkins, regardless of the bacterial strain. Ultrasonic treatment has been widely used in the mineral flotation process due to its advantages in terms of operational simplicity, no secondary pollutant formation, and safety. Currently, many studies have reported the effect of ultrasonic treatment on mineral flotation and shown excellent flotation performance. In this review, the ultrasonic mechanisms are classified into three types: the transient cavitation effect, stable cavitation effect, and acoustic radiation force effect. The effect of the main ultrasonic parameters, including ultrasonic power and ultrasonic frequency, on mineral flotation are discussed. This review highlights the uses of the application of ultrasonic treatment in minerals (such as the cleaning effect, ultrasonic corrosion, and desulfuration), flotation agents (such as dispersion and emulsification and change in properties and microstructure of pharmaceutical solution), and slurry (such formation of microbubbles and coalescence). Additionally, this review discusses the challenges and prospects of using ultrasonic approaches for mineral flotation. The findings demonstrate that the application of the ultrasonic effect yields diverse impacts on flotation, thereby enabling the regulation of flotation behavior through various treatment methods to enhance flotation indices and achieve the desired objectives. The aim of the study was to examine the effect of ultrasonic maceration (U) on the extraction of carnosic acid (CA) and its derivative—carnosol (C)—directly from sage into fish oil, compared to homogenization-assisted maceration (H). It was shown that the ultrasonic maceration process (U) allowed for obtaining a macerate enriched in carnosic acid (CA) and carnosol (C), also containing rosmarinic acid (RA), total polyphenols, and plant pigments, and showing antioxidant properties (DPPH test). There was no unequivocal difference in the efficiency of extracting ingredients from sage into the oil macerate between U and H, with the use of ultrasound in most cases resulting in a greater extraction of C and less extraction of pigments from sage into the macerate than in H. The highest simultaneous contents of CA (147.5 mg/100 g) and C (42.7 mg/100 g) in the macerate were obtained after 60 min of maceration U when using a higher power (320 W). The amount of determined compounds also depended on the concentration of methanol (methanol; 70% methanol) used for the analysis. The maceration U is a simple, safe, "green method" of obtaining active substances, with a reduced number of steps, enabling an interesting application form of CA and C, e.g., for food or cosmetics. Ultrasonic (US) maltreatment was performed before the vacuum far-infrared drying (VFID) of Codonopsis pilosula (CP) slices to investigate the effects of different US parameters on the drying characteristics and nutrients of CP slices. The grey correlation method with relative correlation degree (ri) as the evaluation measure was used to construct a model for the evaluation of the pretreatment quality of CP and to determine the optimal pretreatment conditions. The results showed that with the increase in US frequency and power, the drying rate increased. Under the conditions of US power of 180 W, frequency of 60 kHz and a pre-treatment time of 30 min, the drying time reduced by 28.6%. The contents of polysaccharide and syringin in dried CP slices pretreated by US increased by 14.7% and 62.0%, respectively, compared to the non-pre-treated samples, while the total flavonoid content decreased by 10.0%. In terms of colour, pretreatment had a certain protective effect on the red colour of dried products. The highest relative correlation (0.574) and the best overall quality of performance were observed at 180 W, 60 kHz and 30 min. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of ultrasonic stress germination (USG) on total phenolic contents (TPC), total flavonoid contents (TFC), the phenolic compositions, and antioxidant activities of black highland barley (BHB). The USG processing parameters, polyphenol profile, phenolic compositions, and antioxidant activities were explored after USG. Results showed that the optimal USG parameters were as follows: 350 W ultrasonic pretreatment power, 30 °C ultrasonication temperature, 25 min ultrasonication time, and 64 h germination time. Under these conditions, the total phenolic content (688.84 ± 5.30 mg/100 g) and total flavonoid content (59.23 ± 0.45 mg/100 g) of BHB were increased by 28.55% and 10.15%, respectively, compared to the untreated samples. In addition, the USG treatment could more effectively enrich bound phenolic acids and free flavonoids, among which the content of catechin was significantly increased by USG and was the main characteristic substance. Moreover, the USG treatment could improve the antioxidant activity and had a higher antioxidant potency composite index (APC index) (97.91%) of BHB. This study deliberated the effect of ultrasonic treatment on collagen self-assembly behavior and collagen fibril gel properties. Bovine bone collagen I which had undergone ultrasonic treatment with different power (0–400 W) and duration (0–60 min) was analyzed. SDS-PAGE and spectroscopic analysis revealed that ultrasonic treatment decreased collagen molecular order degree and the number of hydrogen bonds, stretching collagen telopeptide regions while maintaining the integrity of the collagen triple-helical structure. Ultrasonic treatment (p ≤ 200 W, t ≤ 15 min) dispersed the collagen aggregates more evenly, and accelerated collagen self-assembly rate with a decreased but more homogeneous fibril diameter (82.78 ± 16.47–115.52 ± 19.51 nm) and D-periodicity lengths (62.1 ± 2.9–66.5 ± 1.8 nm) than that of the untreated collagen (119.15 ± 27.89 nm; 66.5 ± 1.8 nm). Meanwhile, ultrasonic treatment (p ≤ 200 W, t ≤ 15 min) decreased the viscoelasticity index and gel strength, enhancing thermal stability and promoting specific surface area and porosity of collagen fibril gels than that of the untreated collagen fibril gel. These results testified that collagen self-assembly behavior and collagen fibril gel properties can be regulated by ultrasonic treatment through multi-hierarchical structural alteration. This study provided a new approach for controlling in vitro collagen fibrillogenesis process so as to manufacture novel desirable collagen-based biomaterials with propitious performances for further valorization. Date kernel is a plant-derived byproduct that has the potential to be converted into a high-value-added food ingredient, such as protein concentrate, in the food industry. Ultrasound, which is an alternative method for improving the functional properties of food proteins, is an effective physical treatment for modifying protein functionality. Solubility is the main criterion that primarily affects other functional properties of protein concentrates, such as emulsification, foaming, and water and oil binding. The aim of this study is to enhance the techno-functional performance of date seed protein concentrate (DSPC) by maximizing the solubility via a high-intensity ultrasound (HIUS) treatment at a fixed frequency of 20 kHz. The effect of ultrasonic homogenization under varying amplitudes and times (amplitude of 40, 60, and 80% for 5, 10, and 15 min, respectively) on the functional properties of the DSPC was investigated by using the response surface methodology (RSM). A face-centered central composite design (FC-CCD) revealed that the optimal process conditions of HIUS were at an amplitude of 80% for 15 min. The physicochemical and functional properties of the ultrasound-applied concentrate (DSPC-US) were determined under the optimum HIUS conditions, and then these properties of DSPC-US were compared to the native DSPC. The results showed that the solubility of all DSPC samples treated by HIUS was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than that of the native DSPC. In addition, emulsion activity/stability, foaming activity/stability, and oil-binding capacity increased after HIUS homogenization treatments, whereas the water-binding capacity decreased. These changes in the techno-functional properties of the DSPC-US were explained by the modification to the physicochemical structure of the DSPC (particle size, zeta potential, SDS-PAGE, SEM, FTIR, DSC, free SH content, surface hydrophobicity, and intrinsic emission). Due to the large molecular weight and complex structure of Laminaria japonica polysaccharides (LJP), which limit their absorption and utilization by the body, methods to effectively degrade polysaccharides had received more and more attention. In the present research, hot water extraction coupled with three-phase partitioning (TPP) was developed to extract and isolate LJP. Ultrasonic L. japonica polysaccharides (ULJP) were obtained by ultrasonic degradation. In addition, their physicochemical characteristics and in vitro biological activities were investigated. Results indicated that ULJP had lower weight-average molecular weight (153 kDa) and looser surface morphology than the LJP. The primary structures of LJP and ULJP were basically unchanged, both contained α-hexo-pyranoses and were mainly connected by 1,4-glycosidic bonds. Compared with LJP, ULJP had stronger antioxidant activity, α-amylase inhibitory effect and anti-inflammatory effect on RAW264.7 macrophages. The scavenging rate of DPPH free radicals by ULJP is 35.85%. Therefore, ultrasonic degradation could effectively degrade LJP and significantly improve the biological activity of LJP, which provided a theoretical basis for the in-depth utilization and research and development of L. japonica in the fields of medicine and food. The efficient filtration of low-rank coal (LRC) slurry was significantly beneficial to the production process of wet coal beneficiation. However, relatively few studies have been reported on novel pretreatment methods for the efficient filtration of LRC slurry. In this paper, the mechanism of ultrasonic pretreatment to promote flocculation and filtration of slurry was studied. The hydrophobic variation of the slurry surface was measured by contact angle and XPS. The flocculation properties of slurry were characterized using zeta potential and FBRM. The effects of filter cake porosity and ultrasonic pretreatment on slurry filtration resistance were calculated by L-F NMR and Darcy's theory. The results showed that the ultrasonic pretreatment promoted the flocculation and filtration performance of LRC slurry, increased the filtration rate, and decreased the cake moisture content. Meanwhile, the contact angle of LRC increased significantly from 50.1° to 67.8° after ultrasonic pretreatment, and the surface tension of the filtrate decreased from 69.5 to 53.31 mN/m. Ultrasonic pretreatment reduced the absolute value of the zeta potential of coal slurry from 24.8 to 21.0 mV, and the average chord length of flocs increased from 5–10 μm to 25–30 μm, thus weakening the electrostatic repulsion between coals to promote floc formation. In addition, the pore tests and filtration theory calculations showed that the ultrasonic pretreatment significantly improved the permeability of the filter cake to water and reduced the resistance to slurry during filtration. In particular, the mesopore porosity increased by 9.18%, and the permeability increased by 2.937 × 108 m2. Therefore, this contributed to the reduction of slurry filtration resistance. This study is the first to report the use of response surface methodology to improve phenolic yield and antioxidant activity of Acer truncatum leaves extracts (ATLs) obtained by ultrasonic-assisted extraction. The phenolic composition in ATLs extracted under the optimized conditions were characterized by UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS. Solvent and extraction time were selected based on preliminary experiments, and a four-factors-three-levels central composite design was conducted to optimize solvent concentration (X1), material-to-liquid ratio (X2), ultrasonic temperature (X3) and power (X4) for an optimal total phenol yield (Y1) and DPPH• antioxidant activity (Y2). The results showed that the optimal combination was ethanol:water (v:v) 66.21%, material-to-liquid ratio 1:15.31 g/mL, ultrasonic bath temperature 60 °C, power 267.30 W, and time 30 min with three extractions, giving a maximal total phenol yield of 7593.62 mg gallic acid equivalent/100 g d.w. and a maximal DPPH• antioxidant activity of 74,241.61 μmol Trolox equivalent/100 g d.w. Furthermore, 22 phenolics were first identified in ATL extract obtained under the optimized conditions, indicating that gallates, gallotannins, quercetin, myricetin and chlorogenic acid derivatives were the main phenolic components in ATL. What’s more, a gallotannins pathway existing in ATL from gallic acid to penta-O-galloylglucoside was proposed. The field of chemical and physical transformations induced by ultrasonic waves has shown steady progress during the past decades. There is a solid core of established results and some topics that are not thoroughly developed. The effect of varying ultrasonic frequency is among the most beneficial issues that require advances. In this work, the effect of sonication of Si wafers in tetrahydrofuran on the photovoltage performance was studied, with the specific goal of studying the influence of the varying frequency. The applied ultrasonic transducer design approach enables the construction of the transducer operating at about 400 kHz with a sufficient sonochemical efficiency. The measurements of the surface photovoltage (SPV) transients were performed on p-type Cz-Si(111) wafers. Sonication was done in tetrahydrofuran, methanol, and in their 3:1 mixture. When using tetrahydrofuran, the enhanced SPV signal (up to ≈80%) was observed due to increasing sonication frequency to 400 kHz. In turn, the signal was decreased down to ≈75% of the initial value when the frequency is lowered to 28 kHz. The addition of methanol suppressed this significant difference. It was implied that different decay processes with hydrogen decomposed from tetrahydrofuran could be attempted to explain the mechanism behind the observed frequency-dependent behavior. The non-linear equation of the radial oscillations of a liquid ball in an immiscible liquid under the exposure of time-varying sound pressure was obtained. The behavioral features of a liquid spherical drop placed in such a media were analyzed in the presence of ultrasound irradiations. The slowing-down effect of the extracted metal ions under its exposure has been studied for the first time, using theoretical and experimental approaches. This phenomenon mechanism was revealed, and analytical equations for the mass transfer rate as a function of the sound pressure oscillations amplitude and the substrate ultrasonic treatment time are presented. Experimental studies of Fe3+ ions extracted from chloride and nitrate solutions in systems based on water-soluble polymers were carried out, and a convincing coincidence with the results of theoretical calculations was established. The conditions for achieving the desired extraction efficiency when applying the ultrasonic stimulating effect are specified. Aluminum-doped tin oxide (SnO 2 :Al) thin films were produced by an ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method. The effect of aluminum doping on structural, optical, and electrical properties of tin oxide thin films synthesized at 420 ° C was investigated. Al doping induced a change in the morphology of tin oxide films and yielded films with smaller grain size. SnO 2 thin films undergo a structural reordering and have a texture transition from (301) to (101), and then to (002) preferred cristallographic orientation upon Al doping. The lattice parameters (a and c) decreases with Al doping, following in a first approximation Vegard's law. The optical transmission does not change in the visible region with an average transmittance value of 72–81%. Conversely, in the near infrared (NIR) region, the plasmon frequency shifts towards the IR region upon increasing Al concentration in the grown films. Nominally undoped SnO 2 have a conductivity of ∼1120 S/cm, which is at least two orders of magnitude larger than what is reported in literature. This higher conductivity is attributed to the Cl − ions in the SnCl 4 ·5(H 2 O) precursor, which would act as donor dopants. The introduction of Al into the SnO 2 lattice showed a decrease of the electrical conductivity of SnO 2 due to compensating hole generation. These findings will be useful for further studied tackling the tailoring of the properties of highly demanded fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
