Abstract

Modifications in urinary hydroxyproline concentrations were studied in various collagen degradation diseases. A significant increase in hydroxyprolinuria was found in both men and women with Paget's disease in all age groups considered. Significant increases were found in men with the same pathologies. Rheumatoid arthritis also increased urinary hydroxyproline in both males and females. It therefore seems that bone tissue pathologies are reflected in the metabolism of hydroxyproline as are articular connective tissue pathology strictly related to it.

Abstract

Serum proline iminopeptidase and (where possible) urinary hydroxyproline were determined in 214 subjects: normal subjects, subjects with chronic kidney disease, subjects with chronic liver disease, subjects with osteitis deformans, subjects with rheumatoid arthritis, and subjects with osteoporosis. The values of the two parameters fully corresponded. It is suggested, therefore, that proline iminopeptidase can be determined instead of hydroxyproline in cases where a primarily destructive bone disease in present.

Abstract

Five untreated patients with Paget's disease and one who had been unsuccessfully treated with porcine calcitonin for 2 years were given 20 mg/kg/day disodic ethydronate. Alkaline phosphatase and urinary hydroxyproline values were examined and the progress of the calcitonin test was followed. In addition to being of great importance and in line with the other two parameters in following the course of the disease, this test was found to be an excellent pointer to the moment when no further response is being obtained from treatment with calcitonin.

Abstract

A rare association of prostatic adenocarcinoma with osteitis deformans (Paget's disease) is reported. The diagnosis suspected on the basis of simultaneous increased concentrations of acid and alkaline phosphatases was documented only through repeated biopsies of prostate.
