The diagenetic evolution of sandstone is very complicated under the conditions of high temperatures and pressures in deep-water, deep-buried regimes, which have great influence on reservoir quality. This study investigates the typical reservoir target of Neogene deep-water, submarine-fan sandstones under high-temperature, high-pressure regimes in the Qiongdongnan Basin, South China Sea. Utilizing a thin section, scanning electron microscope (SEM), mineral geochemistry combined with burial history evolution, complex diagenetic events, and main controlling factors of the sandstone in the Neogene Meishan Formation were determined. The results show that the evolution of sandstone reservoirs is initially controlled by depositional framework compositions and subsequently modified by eogenetic and mesogenetic alterations during progressive burial. Eogenetic alterations mainly include the following: (1) mechanical compaction; (2) dissolution of feldspar; (3) low-Fe calcite cementation. Mesogenetic events were identified as the following: (1) dissolution of feldspar; (2) ferroan calcite and ankerite formation; (3) precipitation of quartz and clay mineral. Mechanical compaction is greatly influenced by the original depositional framework composition, and sandstone samples enriched in high contents of detrital clay matrix always experienced extensive mechanical compaction. Different phases of carbonate cement during different diagenetic regimes lead to continuous destruction on reservoir porosity. The dissolution of unstable feldspar minerals during eogenetic and mesogenetic environments leads to the development of secondary porosities and would enhance the quality of the reservoir. Overpressure formation is pervasively developed owing to early disequilibrium compaction and subsequent natural gas charging. Only well-sorted sandstones with low contents of detrital clay matrix could resist early mechanical compaction, lead to ample residual original porosities, and then undergo extensive mineral dissolution to generate sufficient secondary porosities. Subsequently, these porosities would be effectively protected by overpressure formation. Poor-sorted sandstones with high contents of detrital clay matrix would experience strong mechanical compaction and extensive destruction of original porosities. Thus, these sandstones are difficult to have significant dissolution and are unable to be effectively protected by overpressure formation. Therefore, the interplay between the original framework composition and the corresponding diagenetic pathways coupled with overpressure formation would result in strong reservoir heterogeneity for the deep-buried sandstones during progressive burial. The strata in the Shita Mountain, Yunkai region, are predominantly composed of clastic rocks with intercalated limestones. However, the precise stratigraphic age remains uncertain due to the scarcity of fossils. Previously, conglomerate layers in this region were considered indicative of the Yunan Orogeny during the Cambrian–Ordovician transition. However, through the identification of 12 lithofacies types and 5 lithofacies combinations in the conglomerate layers of the Shita Mountain section, it has been confirmed that these layers represent a fan delta depositional environment characterized by debris flow, traction flow, torrent, and rock flow. Based on the presence of brachiopod fossils dating to the Early–Middle Ordovician, we propose a novel two-episode model for the Yunan Orogeny. The first episode corresponds to submarine fan deposition, while the second episode involves tectonic uplift and a short-term sedimentary hiatus. Further analysis of the detrital zircon provenance reveals a strong affinity among the Yunkai area, India, Antarctica, the Lhasa, the Himalayas, Southern Qiangtang, and Western Australia during the Early–Middle Ordovician transition under the Gondwana assemblage background. Petrography of recrystallised ikaite from Ocean Drilling Program material has been presented previously from Nankai Trough and Congo (ex-Zaire) deep-sea fan. This paper expands on the Nankai Trough ikaite observations, drawing on evidence from Laptev Sea, South Georgia, Okhotsk Sea, and coastal lagoon Point Barrow. However, even though many ikaite and glendonite sites occur at high latitudes, it cannot be that ikaite forms exclusively in polar environments, as demonstrated by the occurrences in the low latitude low temperature deep sea sediments offshore Gulf of Guinea (Angola Congo) and mid-latitude deep-sea trenches offshore Japan. Recrystallised ikaite occurs as mm large, zoned calcite crystals in all samples, along with secondary phases of calcite. Our data set is unique in that the origin, storage, and recrystallisation process of natural formed ikaite is recorded in detail and confirms that glendonite petrographic characteristics are a consequence of the structure and chemistry of recrystallising ikaite and not the physical or geochemical environment. The transformation of man-made ikaite to calcite as recorded in laboratory studies, is a process very similar to the one we have observed for natural ikaite. Most significant is that there is variation in the order of the calcite types within a single sample, leading to the conclusion that the variation is a consequence of impurities and geochemical variability in the ikaite, not the external environment. Morphological observations reveal similarities in ikaite and glendonite, this and the similarity in internal textures in glendonite and recrystallised ikaite confirms that glendonite may be used as an indicator of past presence of ikaite. The Forties Sandstone Member is an important deep-water reservoir in the Central North Sea. The role of depositional characteristics, grain-coating clays, and diagenesis in controlling the reservoir quality of the sandstones is poorly understood. The main aim of the study is to understand the role of depositional characteristics, grain-coating and pore-filling clays, and diagenesis in controlling the reservoir quality evolution of turbidite-channel sandstones. The study employed a multi-disciplinary technique involving thin section petrography and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate the impact of grain size, clay matrix content, mode of occurrence of grain-coating chlorite and illite, and their impact in arresting quartz cementation and overall reservoir quality in the sandstones. Results of our study reveal that porosity evolution in the sandstones has been influenced by both primary depositional characteristics and diagenesis. Sandstones with coarser grain size and lower pore-filling clay content have the best reservoir porosity (up to 28%) compared to those with finer grain size and higher pore-filling clay content. Quartz cement volume decreases with increasing clay-coating coverage. Clay coating coverage of >40% is effective in arresting quartz cementation. Total clay volume of as low as 10% could have a deleterious impact on reservoir quality. The Forties Sandstone Member could potentially be a suitable candidate for physical and mineralogical storage of CO2. However, because of its high proportion (>20%) of chemically unstable minerals (feldspar, carbonates, and clays), their dissolution due to CO2 injection and storage could potentially increase reservoir permeability by an order of magnitude, thereby affecting the geomechanical and tensile strength of the sandstones. Therefore, an experimental study investigating the amount of CO2 to be injected (and at what pressure) is required to maintain and preserve borehole integrity. This study investigates the Paleogene deep-water depositional system of the Gosau Group at Gams, Styria (Austria). The examined sections of the Danian to the Ypresian age (NP1–NP12) comprise sediments of the Nierental and Zwieselalm Formations. Four deep-water clastic facies assemblages were encountered: (1) pelagic marls with thin turbidites, (2) carbonate-rich turbidites, (3) carbonate-poor turbidites, and (4) marl-bearing turbidites; slump beds and mass flow deposits are common features in all facies assemblages. Based on heavy mineral, thin section, microprobe, and paleoflow analyses, provenance was from the surrounding Northern Calcareous Alps (NCA) rocks and exhuming metamorphic Upper Austroalpine units to the south. In addition, biogenic calcareous material was delivered by adjacent contemporaneous shelf zones. The sedimentary depocenter was situated at the slope of the incipient Alpine orogenic wedge, in frontal parts of the NCA, facing the subducting Penninic Ocean/Alpine Tethys. The evolution of the Gams Basin was connected to the eoalpine and mesoalpine orogeny and the adjunctive transpressional setting. The Gams deep-water depositional system is interpreted as an aggrading or prograding submarine fan, deposited into a small confined slope basin, positioned along an active continental margin, bound and influenced by (strike-slip) faults, related to crustal shortening. The development of the Gams slope basin and its infilling sequences was mainly dominated by tectonism and sediment supply, rather than by eustatic sea-level fluctuations. The basin was cut off during the Eocene due to renewed orogeny. A Quaternary analogue for the Upper Cretaceous to Paleogene basin setting of the Gams area is represented by the Santa Monica Basin in the California Continental Borderland. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Turbidite-associated black shale of the Semanggol Formation is extensively distributed in the northwestern part of the Western Belt, Peninsular Malaysia. The black shale occurs as a dark grey to black and thick to medium-bedded deposit. It represents the distal part of submarine fan system (outer-fan) overlying interbedded sandstone to shale facies of the mid-fan and conglomeratic pebbly sandstone facies of the inner-fan. Field observations and its widespread occurrence have resulted in the black shale being considered as a potential analog for a source rock in offshore Peninsular Malaysia. The present study includes detailed mineralogical (XRD, SEM, and EDX analysis), inorganic geochemical (major oxides, trace elements TEs, and rare earth elements REEs), and Rock-Eval pyrolysis analyses of the black shale samples, collected from the Gunung Semanggol, Bukit Merah, and Nami areas in northwestern Peninsular Malaysia. The primary focus of this study is to investigate the provenance, paleoredox conditions, paleoclimate, sedimentary rate, paleoproductivity, and upwelling system that would be helpful to understanding the role of these parameters in the enrichment of organic matter (OM) in the black shale. The Rock-Eval analysis shows that the black shale of the Semanggol Formation comprises type-III kerogens, which suggests organic input from a terrestrial source. The black shale also contains mature to postmature organic matter. Based on the mineralogical analysis, the mineral composition of the black shale comprises illite and kaolinite, with abundant traces of quartz and feldspar as well as few traces of titanium and zircon. Inorganic geochemical data designate black shale deposition in a passive margin setting that has experienced moderate to strong weathering, semi-arid to hot arid climate, and moderate sedimentation rate. Ratios of Ni/Co, U/Th, and V/(V+Ni) along with slightly negative to positive Ce* anomalies and UEF-MoEF cross-plot unanimously indicate anoxic/dysoxic water conditions that are suitable for organic matter preservation. Geochemical proxies related to modern upwelling settings (i.e., Cd/Mo, Co vs. Mn) show that the deep marine black shale was strongly influenced by persistent upwelling, a first-order controlling factor for organic matter enrichment in the distal part (outer fan of the submarine fan system) of the Semanggol Basin. However, productivity-controlled upwelling and a high sedimentary rate, as well as high-productivity in oxygen-depleted settings without strong anoxic conditions, has played an essential role in the accumulation of organic matter. This article illustrates a multi-technique frontier approach for the provenance study of silt-size sediments. The mineralogical composition of low-density and heavy-mineral fractions of four samples of fine to very coarse silt deposited on the Bengal shelf was analyzed separately for six different grain-size classes by combining grain counting under an optical microscope, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The geochemical composition was determined on both bulk-sediment samples and on their <5-μm classes. Such a "multiple-window" approach allowed capturing the full mineralogical information contained in each sample, as well as the size-dependent intra-sample variability of all compositional parameters. The comparison between grain-size distributions obtained by different methods highlighted a notable fallacy of laser granulometry, which markedly overestimated the size of the finest mode represented by fine silt and clay. As a test case, we chose to investigate sediments of the Bengal shelf, where detritus is fed from the Meghna estuary, formed by the joint Ganga and Brahmaputra Rivers and representing the largest single entry point of sediment in the world's oceans. The studied samples show the typical fingerprint of orogenic detritus produced by focused erosion of collision orogens. Bengal shelf silt is characterized by a feldspatho-quartzose (F-Q) composition with a Q/F ratio decreasing from 3.0 to 1.7 with increasing grain size, plagioclase prevailing over K-feldspar, and rich transparent-heavy-mineral assemblages including mainly amphibole with epidote, and minor garnet and pyroxene. Such a detrital signature compares very closely with Brahmaputra suspended load, but mineralogical and geochemical parameters, including the anomalous decrease of the Q/F ratio with increasing grain size, consistently indicate more significant Ganga contribution for cohesive fine silt. The accurate quantitative characterization of different size fractions of Bengal shelf sediments represents an essential step to allow comparison of compositional signatures characterizing different segments of this huge source-to-sink system, from fluvial and deltaic sediments of the Himalayan foreland basin and Bengal shelf to the Bengal Fan. As a Quaternary repository of wind-reworked Indus River sand at the entry point in the Himalayan foreland basin, the Thal Desert in northern Pakistan stores mineralogical information useful to trace erosion patterns across the western Himalayan syntaxis and the adjacent orogenic segments that fed detritus into the Indus delta and huge deep-sea fan throughout the Neogene. Provenance analysis of Thal Desert sand was carried out by applying optical and semi-automated Raman spectroscopy on heavy-mineral suites of four eolian and 11 fluvial sand samples collected in selected tributaries draining one specific tectonic domain each in the upper Indus catchment. In each sample, the different types of amphibole, garnet, epidote and pyroxene grains—the four dominant heavy-mineral species in orogenic sediment worldwide—were characterized by SEM-EDS spectroscopy. The chemical composition of 4249 grains was thus determined. Heavy-mineral concentration, the relative proportion of heavy-mineral species, and their minerochemical fingerprints indicate that the Kohistan arc has played the principal role as a source, especially of pyroxene and epidote. Within the western Himalayan syntaxis undergoing rapid exhumation, the Southern Karakorum belt drained by the Hispar River and the Nanga Parbat massif were revealed as important sources of garnet, amphibole, and possibly epidote. Sediment supply from the Greater Himalaya, Lesser Himalaya, and Subhimalaya is dominant only for Punjab tributaries that join the Indus River downstream and do not contribute sand to the Thal Desert. The detailed compositional fingerprint of Thal Desert sand, if contrasted with that of lower course tributaries exclusively draining the Himalaya, provides a semi-actualistic key to be used, in conjunction with complementary provenance datasets and geological information, to reconstruct changes in paleodrainage and unravel the relationship between climatic and tectonic forces that controlled the erosional evolution of the western Himalayan-Karakorum orogen in space and time.
