This work is mainly concerned with the effect of anthropogenic activities, the presence of black sand spots, factory construction, and shipping, in addition to other activities like agriculture, on soil heavy metal pollution along the Mediterranean shores of Lake El-Burullus, Egypt, to assess the contamination levels and to identify possible sources and the distribution of these metals. This study focuses on the various heavy metal contamination levels in El-Burullus Lake coastal sediments. Sediment samples were collected and analyzed by the XRF technique for heavy metals, including Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, Zr, Pb, Ba, Sr, Ga, Rb, V, and Nb. Statistical analyses, including correlation coefficient, factor analysis, and cluster analysis, were employed to understand the interactions and sources of these metals. The highest concentrations recorded were for Zr (84–1436 mg/kg) and Pb (1–1166 mg/kg), with average concentrations of 455.53 mg/kg and 79.27 mg/kg, respectively. Cr, Zr, Nb, and Pb showed average values higher than the average shale concentration, indicating potential pollution. Correlation analysis revealed strong associations between several metals, suggesting common sources of both natural and anthropogenic origin and similar distribution patterns. Factor analysis indicated four main factors accounting for 94.069% of the total variance, with the first factor heavily dominated by Cr, Ni, Zn, and Ba. The contamination factor (Cf) and degree (DC) analyses revealed varying contamination levels, with most metals exhibiting the greatest values in the western half of the area. The pollution load index (PLI) indicated high-quality sediment samples without significant pollution. The assessment of soil contamination in the vicinity of integrated siderurgical plants is of outmost importance for agroecosystems and human health, and sensitive techniques should be employed for accurate assessment of chemical elements (metals, potential toxic elements, rare earths, radioelements) in soil and further evaluation of potential ecological and safety risk. In this paper a total of 45 major, minor and trace elements (Al, As, Au, Ba, Br, Ca, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Dy, Eu, Fe, Hf, Hg, I, K, La, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Nd, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sb, Sc, Sm, Sn, Sr, Ta, Tb, Th, Ti, Tm, U, V, W, Y, Yb, Zn and Zr) were quantified in soils located around a large siderurgical works (Galati, SE Romania) using instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) in combination with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP–MS). The statistical analysis results and vertical distribution patterns for three depths (0–5 cm, 5–20 cm, 20–30 cm) indicate inputs of toxic elements in the sites close to the ironmaking and steelmaking facilities and industrial wastes dumping site. For selected elements, a comparison with historical, legislated and world reported concentration values in soil was performed and depth migration, contamination and toxic risk indices were assessed. The distribution of major, rock forming elements was closer to the Upper Continental Crust (UCC), and to the Dobrogea loess, a finding confirmed by the ternary diagram of the incompatible trace elements Sc, La and Th, as well as by the La to Th rate. The Kab Amiri area in the Central Eastern Desert (CED) of Egypt comprises ophiolitic rocks, island arc metasediments, and granitic rocks. This study deals with the petrography and geochemistry of the ophiolitic and island arc rocks to understand their petrogenesis and geodynamic evolution of the CED ophiolitic belt. The Kab Amiri ophiolite is dismembered, comprising serpentinites and metabasalt (spilite). Serpentinites have low contents of Al2O3 (1.14 wt%) and CaO (0.65 wt%), suggesting they are depleted peridotite protoliths (e.g., depleted harzburgites to dunites). The high L.O.I. value (13.7 wt%) of serpentinite rocks indicates intense hydration and serpentinization during alteration processes. Petrographic and geochemical studies suggest that serpentinites were likely formed after depleted peridotites in a supra-subduction zone (SSZ) setting (e.g., a fore-arc setting). Spilitic basalt shows a tholeiitic affinity of the depleted mantle source. The arc-related metasediments are represented mainly by schists and slate. Many samples of metasediments are relatively low in alumina (Al2O3 < 15%), suggesting a low clay content and formation in an island arc setting. In contrast, protoliths of island-arc metabasalts and meta-andesites crystallized from calc-alkaline magmas in the immature oceanic arcs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The widely distributed granitic intrusions in the Nubian Shield can provide comprehensive data for understanding its crustal evolution. We present new bulk-rock geochemistry and isotopic (zircon U-Pb and Lu-Hf) data from the Haweit granodiorites in the Gabgaba Terrane (NE Sudan). The dated zircons presented a 206Pb/238U Concordia age of 718.5 ± 2.2 Ma, indicating that they crystallized during the Cryogenian. The granodiorites contain both biotite and amphibole as the main mafic constituents. The samples exhibit metaluminous (A/CNK = 0.84–0.94) and calc-alkaline signatures. Their mineralogical composition and remarkable low P2O5, Zr, Ce, and Nb concentrations confirm that they belong to I-type granites. They exhibit subduction-related magma geochemical characters such as enrichment in LILEs and LREEs and depletion in HFSEs and HREEs, with a low (La/Yb)N ratio (3.0–5.9) and apparent negative Nb anomaly. The positive Hf(t) values (+7.34 to +11.21) and young crustal model age (TDMC = 734–985 Ma) indicates a juvenile composition of the granodiorites. The data suggest that the Haweit granodiorites may have formed from partially melting a juvenile low-K mafic source. During subduction, the ascending asthenosphere melts might heat and partially melt the pre-existing lower crust mafic materials to generate the Haweit granodiorites in the middle segment of the Nubian Shield. This study investigates the distribution of natural radioactivity and geological, geochemical, and environmental risk assessments of phosphorite deposits to determine their suitability for international applications (such as phosphoric acid and phosphatic fertilizers). The examined Late Cretaceous phosphorite deposits belong to the Duwi Formation, which is well exposed on the southern scarp boundary at the central part of Abu Tartur Plateau, Gebel Qulu El Sabaya, East Dakhla Oasis. This formation is classified into lower phosphorite, middle shale, and upper phosphorite members. The lower phosphorite ranges in thickness from 2 to 3.5 m and mainly comprises apatite (possibly francolite), dolomite, calcite, quartz, hematite, anhydrite, and kaolinite. They contain an average concentration of CaO (38.35 wt.%), P2O5 (24.92 wt.%), SiO2 (7.19 wt.%), Fe2O3 (4.18 wt.%), MgO (3.99 wt.%), F (1.59 wt.%), Al2O3 (1.84 wt.%), Na2O (1.33 wt.%), and K2O (0.22 wt.%). Natural radioactivity and radiological parameters were investigated for fifteen samples of phosphorites using a NaI (Tl) scintillation detector. Absorbed dose rates, outdoor and indoor annual effective dose, radium equivalent activity, external and internal hazard, and excess cancer risk values are higher than the recommended levels, reflecting that exposure to these deposits for a long time may lead to health risks to human organs. Several outcrops of felsic melt, commonly known as oceanic plagio-granites, appear as melt pockets, irregular bosses, and dikes. Three main rock successions were exposed in the Abu Dabbab area: ophiolitic sequence, island arc assemblage, and rare metal-bearing albite granites. Plagio-granite is composed mainly of plagioclase and quartz, and chemically contains high SiO2, Al2O3, and Na2O values. The petrogenetic and geochemical studies concluded that the magmas of plagio-granites and associated felsic rocks were derived from partial melting of highly depleted mantle harzburgite and/or pre-existing oceanic crustal rocks (basalts and/or gabbros). The geochemical characteristics reveal that Abu Dabbab plagio-granites are identical to the typically low-K series of ophiolitic complexes and resemble the ocean ridge granites. Elements such as Co, Nb, Pb, and Nd in Abu Dabbab plagio-granites have high Clarke concentrations (more than 1.88). This indicates Abu Dabbab plagio-granite derived from partial melting of pre-existing oceanic crustal rocks. The average concentration values of 238 U and 232 Th are lower than those of the world's average and the average activities in granitic rocks. The scope of estimated exercises generally contrasted as their quality in rock tests relies upon their physical, synthetic, and geo-concoction properties and the appropriate condition. Beryl occurs in the ancient Roman mines at Wadi Nugrus, South Eastern Desert of Egypt. It ranges from small crystals to 10 mm in size, and it varies in color, appearing as bright green, pale green, dark green and brown-green with biotite inclusions. The trace and minor elements were analyzed by the SIMS method. The two rims are richer in Cs, Na, Mg, Fe, Sc, V, Rb and H2O than cores but are poor in Mn, Ca, Co, Sr and Li. The bright-green rim is richer than the pale-green one in Na, P, K, Ca, Fe, Rb, Cs and F, but poorer in Mg and Li. The alkaline elements (Cs, Na, Rb) and Fe correlate with the color zoning, and where beryl crystals have a maximum of these elements, the green color is strong and bright. The emerald of Wadi Nugrus has similarities with the geological setting of the Canadian emeralds. Emeralds occur along the contact zone between biotite schists, pegmatites and quartz veins. A large-scale interaction between Be-bearing magmatic fluids from granites and related pegmatites took place with hydrothermal fluids enriched in Cr, V, Sc, Mg and Ca after percolation through pre-existing serpentinite and talc carbonates, metagabbros and biotite schists and additional fluids bearing H2O, NaCl and CO2.
