The mineralogy of nine recently discovered dykes (VL1:VL8 and VL10) in the vicinity of Vattikod village, Nalgonda district in Telangana State is described. The mineral assemblage present and their compositions are comparable to those of bona fide lamproites in terms of the presence of phlogopite (Ti-rich, Al-poor phlogopite and tetraferriphlogopite); amphiboles (potassic-arfvedsonite, potassic-richterite, potassic-ferro-richterite, potassic-katophorite, Ti-rich potassic-katophorite, Ti-rich potassic-magnesio-katophorite); Al-poor clinopyroxenes; feldspars (K-feldspar, Ba-K-feldspar and Na-feldspar) and spinels (chromite-magnetite and qandilite-ulvöspinel-franklinite). These dykes have undergone diverse and significant degrees of deuteric alteration as shown by the formation of secondary phases such as: titanite, allanite, hydro-zircon, calcite, chlorite, quartz and cryptocrystalline SiO2. On the basis of their respective mineralogy: the VL4 and VL5 dykes are classified as pseudoleucite-phlogopite lamproite; VL2 and VL3 dykes as pseudoleucite-amphibole-lamproite; and VL6, VL7 and VL8 as pseudoleucite-phlogopite-amphibole-lamproite. VL10 is extensively altered but contains fresh euhedral apatite microphenocrysts together with pseudomorphs after leucite and is classified as a pseudoleucite-apatite-(phlogopite?) lamproite. The mineralogy of the Vattikod lamproite dykes is compared with that of the Ramadugu, Somavarigudem and Yacharam lamproite dykes which also occur in the Ramadugu lamproite field. The lamproites from the Eastern Dharwar Craton are considered as being possible expressions of ancient subduction-related alkaline magmatism along the Eastern Ghats mobile belt.

Wilhelmgümbelite, ideally [ZnFe2+Fe33+(PO4)3(OH)4(H2O)5]·2H2O, is a new secondary phosphate mineral related closely to schoonerite, [ZnMnFe22+Fe3+(PO4)3(OH)2(H2O)7]·2H2O, from oxidized zones of the Hagendorf-Süd pegmatite, Hagendorf, Oberpfalz, Bavaria, Germany. Wilhelmgümbelite occurs as radiating sprays of needle-like rectangular laths, up to 0.2 mm long and with colour varying from light yellow brown to orange red. Cleavage is perfect parallel to {010}. The mineral is associated closely with an oxidized pseudomorph of phosphophyllite, recently named steinmetzite. Other associated minerals are albite, apatite, chalcophanite, jahnsite, mitridatite, muscovite and quartz. The calculated density of wilhelmgümbelite is 2.82 g cm–3. It is optically biaxial (+) with α = 1.560(2), β = 1.669(2), γ = 1.718(2), 2V(meas) = 63(1)° and 2V(calc.) = 65°. Dispersion is weak with r > v, orientation X = b, Y = c, Z = a. Pleochroism is weak, with coloursZ = orange brown, Y = yellow brown, X = light yellow brown, Z >> Y > X. Electron microprobe analyses (average of seven analyses, seven crystals) with H2O and FeO/Fe2O3 calculated on structural grounds, gave FeO 5.8, Fe2O3 25.0, MnO 2.6, ZnO 16.4, P2O5 28.7, H2O 23.4, total 101.9 wt.%. The empirical formula, scaled to 3 P and OH– adjusted for charge balance is Zn1.50Mn0.272+Fe0.602+Fe2.333+(PO4)3·(OH)2.73(H2O)8.27. The structural formula is [Zn(Mn0.27Fe0.733+)∑1.0(Zn0.25Fe0.152+Fe0.603+)∑1.0(Zn0.25Fe0.452+)∑0.7Fe3+(PO4)3(OH,H2O)9]·2H2O.Wilhelmgümbelite has orthorhombic symmetry, Pmab, Z = 4, with the unit-cell parameters of a = 10.987(7) Å, b = 25.378(13) Å, c = 6.387(6) Å and V = 1781(2) Å3. The strongest lines in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [dobs in Å(Iobs) (hkl)] 12.65 (100) (020); 8.339 (5) (120); 6.421 (14) (001); 6.228 (8) (011); 4.223 (30) (120) and 2.111 (7) (0 12 0). Wilhelmgümbelite is an oxidized form of schoonerite, with the Mn2+ replaced principally by Fe3+. Its structure differs from that of schoonerite in having the Zn partitioned between two different sites, one five-coordinated as in schoonerite and the other tetrahedrally coordinated. Wilhelmgümbelite also differs structurally from schoonerite in having partial occupation of one of the Fe sites, which appears to be correlated with the Zn partitioning.

Irinarassite, Ca3Sn2SiAl2O12, a new mineral species of the garnet supergroup was discovered in metasomatically altered carbonate-silicate xenoliths in ignimbrites of the Upper Chegem Caldera, Northern Caucasus, Kabardino-Balkaria, Russia. It occurs as small zones and irregular spots in kimzeyite-kerimasite or rarely as single crystals not exceeding 10 μm in size, within complex pseudomorphs after zircon. Lakargiite, tazheranite, baddeleyite, kerimasite, kimzeyite, baghdadite and rarely magnesioferrite are associated with irinarassite in the pseudomorphs which are confined to larnite-cuspidine zones immediately adjoining the ignimbrite. Larnite, cuspidine, rondorfite, fluor- and hydroxylellestadite, fluorite and secondary minerals such as ettringite, hillebrandite and bultfonteinite are associated with irinarassite. Irinarassite is pale brown to yellow colour. The mineral is characterized by the absence of cleavage and by an irregular fracture. The calculated density is 4.3 g cm–1. The mineral is isotropic with a calculated refractive index of 1.9. The empirical crystal chemical formula of irinarassite from the holotype specimen is as follows (Ca2.965Fe2+0.035)Σ3(Sn1.016Zr0.410Ti0.262Sb5+0.237Fe2+0.035U6+0.017Sc0.014Hf0.006Nb0.004)Σ2.001(Al1.386Fe3+0.804Si0.446Ti4+0.364)Σ3O12. Electron backscatter diffraction patterns of irinarassite are fitted to the garnet model with a = 12.50(3) Å with excellent MAD (mean angular deviation) = 0.16°. The Raman spectrum of irinarassite is analogous to those of kerimasite and other Zr-Sn-garnets of the schorlomite and bitikleite groups.

Hydrothermal conversion of single crystals of calcite, CaCO3, dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2, and magnesite, MgCO3, was carried out in ammonium phosphate buffer solution. While calcite easily forms a pseudomorph of hydroxylapatite, Ca5(PO4)3OH, it takes several weeks to convert magnesite into pseudomorphic dittmarite, (NH4)Mg(PO4)·H2O. The conversion of dolomite, as the compositional intermediate, also proceeded slowly, but yielded a biphasic pseudomorph composed of whitlockite, Ca9Mg(PO4)6O(PO3OH), and dittmarite. To our knowledge, this is the first description of a biphasic pseudomorph with chemically and structurally different phases. Near the surface, the two phases formed a porous layered structure, while towards the core of the single crystal a fine-grained mixture of both minerals precipitated. The initially sequential pattern of precipitation of Ca-rich whitlockite followed by Mg-rich dittmarite can be explained by dissolved Mg ions being adsorbed onto the dolomite surface or incorporated into hydrated magnesium complexes, retarding crystallization of dittmarite. Surface adsorbed Mg ions impeding further dissolution of dolomite also partly accounts for the observed lower reaction rates of dolomite and magnesite, as compared to calcite. An additional factor decreasing the reaction rates of dolomite and magnesite is a considerable increase in molar volume upon conversion, which restricts the formation of porosity and, hence, ion transport to the reaction front.

A ‘metamorphic vermiculite’-like phase was identified in Ca-rich ancient ceramic sherds from excavations in NW Peloponnese, Greece. Archaeometric investigations have shown that the raw materials used in the production of ancient ceramics were derived from local Plio-Pleistocene sediments. Analysis by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy showed that ‘metamorphic vermiculite’ is a common constituent phase of these sediments occurring in three texturally different types: as interstratified white mica-chlorite and chlorite-vermiculite, and white mica-(white mica-chlorite) stacks. In an attempt to elucidate the thermal transformation of ‘metamorphic vermiculite’ present in the calcareous raw materials, we produced experimental ceramics made from these local raw materials and fired them at 700, 750, 850, 950 and 1050°C in a static air furnace. The mixed-layered chlorite-vermiculite was transformed completely at ∼800°C contributing to the formation of new high-T minerals. The two other types of ‘metamorphic vermiculite’ retain their original lath-like shape up to 1050°C and only a few crystals show that they have undergone complete transformation at this temperature. In the latter crystals, numerous nanocrystals were formed sub-parallel to the former cleavages of ‘metamorphic vermiculite’ pseudomorphs, suggesting their contribution to the nucleation of high-T minerals (i.e. ferrian aluminian diopside, spinel, Fe oxides) by reactions with the available CaO. It is suggested that the firing conditions (i.e. maximum reaction temperature of 1050°C, reaction time of 1 h, oxygen atmosphere) which promote disequilibrium reactions, and the greater contribution of the white mica constituent against chlorite in some of the initial structures of ‘metamorphic vermiculite’ may be responsible for the delay of its thermal decomposition at 1050°C.

We have analysed a rare occurrence of orange-brown manganotantalite lamellae (visible in hand specimen), intergrown with microlite [(Ca,Na)2(Ta,Nb)2(O,OH,F)7], aggregates of ferrotapiolite, bismuth minerals and apatite to understand more about the mechanisms of crystal growth and secondary modification in Ta-rich minerals. The intergrowth occurs within amblygonite/montebrasite nodules near the quartz core of the highly fractionated rare-metal Li/Be/Ta pegmatite at Rubicon, Karibib, Namibia. Electron microprobe analyses show that manganotantalite lamellae are variable in composition. Primary microlite (Ta2O5 82%, 1.97 Ta a.p.f.u.) forms the matrix mineral between the lamellae. Textural relations suggest an exsolution origin for the lamellae. Manganotantalite is represented by three generations: (1) primary late magmatic; (2) disequilibrium exsolution lamellae; and (3) subsolidus replacement. Crystallization commenced with primary microlite and likely simultaneous intergrowth between ferrotapiolite and a first generation of late-magmatic primary manganotantalite with low Ta (1.1—1.5 a.p.f.u.). On cooling this was followed by exsolution of manganotantalite lamellae, generation (2) with low—medium Ta (1.27—1.7 a.p.f.u.). The replacement of microlite by a highly fractionated late-stage melt rich in Mn2+, Ca2+ with low Na+ finally produces a third generation (3) of manganotantalite with high Ta (1.72—1.99 a.p.f.u.) at the contact with microlite. Native bismuth and bismutite cut across microlite and pseudomorph lamellae as a final hydrothermal replacement. Apatite is ubiquitous at the contact with amblygonite. The stability field of microlite may be extended by incorporation of CaTa2O6-rynersonite and Ca2Ta2O7 — idealized, components in solid solution. However, rynersonite-CaTa2O6 with distorted octahedra has some structural templates which are similar to the structure of pyrochlore (microlite). Hence, via the perovskite/pyrochlore analogy, hypothetical exsolution of manganotantalite-type structures may occur from a microlite (pyrochlore) host by solid-state diffusion via metastable rynersonite-type intermediates. Such a mechanism has the potential to explain the crystallographically controlled intergrowth textures and the compositional heterogeneity.

Cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging and spectroscopy, as well as backscattered electron imaging, were used to assign the occurrence of several mineral phases and rock structures in altered nordmarkites and calcite-bearing granites from the Nb-Zr-REE deposits from Khaldzan Buregte and Tsakhir (Mongolian Altai) to three events: (1) intrusion of barren nordmarkites; (2) intrusion of small bodies of calcite-bearing granites with metasomatic alteration of the wall-rocks; and (3) alteration by F-rich fluids.Unusual red and yellow CL caused by Fe3+ and Mn2+ emission centres were detected in microcline and albite. Fe3+ centres were also established (along with others) in quartz, zircon, and possibly in fluorite.Magmatic and metasomatic rock structures and internal structures of the minerals coexist in the samples. The primary magmatic features were in part preserved during alteration. In contrast, the internal and the centre structures may be changed during alteration even in non-replaced mineral phases. Euhedral minerals may be formed by secondary processes as shown for lath-shaped albite. The occurrence of pseudomorphs, the inheritance of elements during replacement, and the mechanical effects of secondary minerals on earlier mineral phases during metasomatic growth are proposed as criteria for the reconstruction of the mineral succession in altered rocks. Snowball structures may be formed as a result of metasomatic alteration rather than as a magmatic intergrowth.

Thallium leucite, TlAlSi2O6, has been synthesized at 450°C for 7 days, under ambient conditions, by the transformation of dehydrated analcime NaAlSi2O6 in the presence of excess TlCl. This substitution of Tl for Na leads to confirmation of a thallium-leucite pseudomorph after analcime. Their optical properties, X-ray powder diffraction patterns, electron microprobe analysis, infrared spectra, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy have characterized the synthetic Tl-leucites. The IR spectra show that the mid-IR modes T-O stretching and T-O-T bending vibrations for TlAlSi2O6 are more resemblant of those for analcime than for leucite, KAlSi2O6. This resemblance implies that Tl cation enters the W-site rather than the S-site in the analcime structure: Na (S) + H2O (W) ⇋ □ + K (leucite) ⇋ □ + Tl (Tl- leucite), where □ represents an S-site vacancy. The mechanism of this substitution is supported by the crystal chemical constraints: inasmuch as the S-site is smaller than the W-site, Tl+ cations being larger than Na+ plainly prefer the latter site to the former. One inference from the binding energy for Tl+ by XPS is that Tl+ occupies the extra-framework site in synthetic leucite pseudomorph, rather than the smaller tetrahedral site. The difference in Al/Si disordering between analcime and leucite and the nonstoichiometry due to the solid solution of the □Si3O6 component into the leucite structure may provide a fundamental insight into understanding why TlAlSi2O6 deviates from the trend defined by K-, Rb- and CsAlSi2O6 leucite series on the a-c parameter diagram, inasmuch as these three cations in the leucite structure occupy the W-sites. Finally, synthesis of TlAlSi2O6 leucite has an implication for the existence of other polymorphs due to different degrees of Al/Si disordering, except for high- and low-temperature leucites already known: natural leucites crystallized directly through igneous processes are different from those formed by substitution of K for Na in analcimes.

Since the development of the thermal ionisation technique (Edwards et al., 1986), U-series have been increasingly used to date corals, marine sediments and hydrothermal carbonates. Attempts to use this approach to date weathering phenomena are much fewer, mainly due to the fact that soils are open systems in which many chemical elements (including U) are readily mobilized. This study focusses on goethite pseudomorphs in the 28 m thick weathering profile of Yaou. The goethite pseudomorphs, which may constitute 'closed' systems for U-series, occur throughout the profile and formed after hydrothermal pyrite disseminated in the bedrock. Detailed description of the Yaou profile can be found in Freyssinet (1994) and oxygen isotopic compositions of goethite pseudomorphs are given in Girard et al. (1997).

Textures produced by reactions involving garnet in a sillimanite-staurolite schist have been in- vestigated using an irreversible thermodynamic model. The model predicts that the local production or consump- tion of garnet is strongly influenced by the proximity of garnet to growing sillimanite and dissolving staurolite. Garnets within sillimanite segregations should dissolve near the siUimanite-bearing centre of the segregation while garnets within or adjacent to staurolite poikilo- blasts should grow as the staurolite is replaced by a muscovite-rich pseudomorph. Garnets located in the matrix may grow, not react at all, or dissolve depending on the local configuration of nearby sillimanite, staurolite, and garnet. Textures predicted by the model are similar to those observed in thin section: many garnets are truncated within sillimanite segregations; garnets located in pseudo- morphs after staurolite are equant and have thick un- poikilitic rims that suggest growth; most matrix garnets also have thick inclusion-free rims that suggest growth but a few have thin rims, indicating little growth, or are irregularly shaped, suggesting dissolution. SUMMARY. Staurolite crystals from the aureole of the Ardara pluton have been analysed using the electron microprobe. Compositional variations of TiO2, MnO, and MgO take the form of irregular zoning, differences across sector twin boundaries, and variable marginal compositions, and can be attributed mostly to disequilibrium and localized diffusion. FEW analytical data exist for staurolite, in comparison with other metamorphic minerals such as garnet. However, using the microprobe, Hollister and Bence (1967) working with relatively inclusion-free specimens from the Kwoiek Area, British Columbia, established compositional zoning across staurolite in addition to compositional irregularities across sectoral twin boundaries. The staurolites studied from Ardara were collected from a single formation, the Gleengort (Clooney) Pelitic Schists, which occur in the thermal aureole surrounding the Ardara Pluton, Co. Donegal (fig. I). Eighteen staurolite crystals, including several that showed sector twinning, were analysed to establish the presence or absence of zoning, which might help to explain nucleation and growth. Petrography The petrography of the Ardara aureole is well documented (Akaad, I956a, b; Pitcher and Sinha, 1958; Pitcher and Read, 1963; Naggar and Atherton, 197o; and Smellie, 1972, b). Thermal metamorphism, which resulted from the emplacement of the Ardara Pluton, was superimposed on the pre-existing regional metamorphic rocks dominated by chlorite-garnet-muscovite schists. This produced, in order of decreasing distance from the contact, biotite, garnet, staurolite, andalusite, sillirnanite, and cordierite (SrneUie, I972 b). Generally the thermal garnets occur as small euhedral crystals (up to 0"25 rnm in diameter) containing a dark core of included graphite and cr0ss-cutting the pre-thermal foliation (fig. 2a). In some cases, especially in the mica-rich bands, these thermal garnets show some alteration to biotite, forming in places atoll garnet rims, with the garnet core mainly replaced by biotite. The regional, pre-thermal garnets still existing tend to be larger (up to 0.80 mm in diameter) exhibit syntectonic textures, and are usually in an advanced state of alteration forming, eventually, biotite pseudomorphs. The appearance and gradual disappearance of staurolite enables a staurolitedominant sub-zone to be distinguished within the staurolite-andalusite zone (fig. I)

X-ray diffraction, electron microprobe and STEM EDAX analyses of basalts from the South Pennines (Derbyshire) indicate that Fe-rich smectites are the dominant alteration products, occurring either as pseudomorphs or infilling veins and vesicles. Previously chlorite has been identified as the common alteration product but its occurrence is very infrequent.

SummaryAnalcime of hydrothermal origin occurs in the gabbros and in the amphibolites and granulites. Crystals from the different rock suites display the same unusual characteristics upon dissolution: the interior is much more susceptible to attack than the outer growth zone; the former may be converted to a skeletal boxwork, and the latter may suffer extreme differential dissolution along successive narrow growth horizons. Pseudomorphs of adularia after analcime have been found in various stages of development, from partial to complete replacement. Some of the latter preserve the very delicate dissolution structures in detail. Up to fourteen growth horizons have been detected in the outer millimetre of the crystal. This demonstrates that both the growth and dissolution of analcime occurred prior to the formation of adularia, an event that has been dated.

Phengite and chlorite have undergone decomposition during pyrometamorphism caused by the intrusion of a dolerite feeder pipe into Dalradian greenschists in Argyllshire, Scotland. All reaction products are extremely fine grained. Transmission electron microscopy has revealed that phengite pseudomorphs consist of biotite, spinel, mullite, sanidine and phengite, and that chlorite pseudomorphs consist of combinations of chlorite, spinel, orthopyroxene, magnetite, cordierite and biotite. Although the reactions were short-lived and did not go to completion, microprobe analysis and phase diagram analysis have revealed that there has been significant chemical interaction between the phyllosilicates and the surrounding rock. Numerous orientation relationships exist between the original minerals and their reaction products; the close-packed planes in the precursor phyllosilicates were inherited by their reaction products.

Euhedral crystals of the low-temperature mineral lansfordite, MgCO3 · 5H2O, have been prepared from saturated magnesium bicarbonate solutions at temperatures below 10°C. The crystals are monoclinic P21/a with a = 12.4758(7), b = 7.6258(4), c = 7.3463(6)Å, β = 101.762(6)°, V = 684.24Å3, Dcalc. = 1.693 g cm−3, Dobs. = 1.70(1) g m−3. At room temperature, the crystals slowly effloresce to produce pseudomorphs of nesquehonite, MgCO3 · 3H2O. Dehydration is complete at 300°C, with decarbonation taking place in the interval to 560°C. A new X-ray powder diffraction pattern is presented, and details of the infra-red absorption spectrum are discussed.

SummaryRajite was found at Lone Pine, New Mexico, by R. A. Jenkins. It occurs as small (1.5 mm) crystals in rhyolite with mackayite, and may be a pseudomorph after teineite.
