In this article, a novel type of compact tri-band filter using stub-loaded open-loop ring resonators (OLRRs) is presented.With the open stub loaded, the resonant frequency of the OLRR can be tuned by the tapped location and length of the loaded stub, which makes the OLRR more compact. Making use of the microstrip open-ended feed line, proper external couplings are provided to each passband by magnetic coupling. A tri-band filter centered at 2.0 GHz, 3.2 GHz, and 4.3 GHz is designed, fabricated and measured. Predicted results are verified by the experiments. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel wideband cross-coupled band-pass filter based on defected stepped impedance resonator (DSIR) is presented in this article. Although the DSIR has opposite impedance characteristic and field distribution to the microstrip SIR, its resonant property is similar to the latter. The internal coupling coefficients of DSIRs are found to be large enough for the wideband filter design. A four-pole, cross-coupled band-pass filter with f0 = 1.6 GHz and FBW = 12% is designed and fabricated using the folded DSIR. On the basis of the double resonant property of the complementary split-ring resonators (CSRRs), a novel dual-band microstrip filter is designed, making use of CSRRs as resonant unit and T-shaped stub as feeding structure. More than one transmission zeros are formed due to the cross coupling between the CSRR cells and the T-shaped feeding lines, which have greatly improved the out-of-band property. To validate the proposed method, a dual-band filter with two passbands of 2.4–2.6 GHz and 3.8–4.3 GHz is fabricated and measured, which has a low insertion loss and a high out-of-band rejection. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The left-handed properties of a split-ring resonator defected ground structure transmission line (TL) is investigated in this article. Then the transmission zero location, dispersion relation, impedance characteristic as well as refraction index are derived in detail. A novel compact ultra-wideband bandpass filter is proposed to meet Federal Communications Commission's spectrum mask. Shunt short-circuited stubs and the parallel coupled lines are used to achieve a fraction passband from 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz. Three interdigital edge coupled microstrip lines are used for coupling enhancement. By employing short-circuited stubs, this filter significantly improves the selectivity and out-of-band characteristics. For verification, the proposed filter is designed, simulated, and fabricated with good agreement.
