ABSTRACT A new tunable 1060-nm fiber ring laser based on a hybrid amplifier is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The hybrid amplifier includes an ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier with a 70-cm Yb-doped fiber and a semiconductor optical amplifier. The proposed laser can provide low relative intensity noise and a narrow linewidth. According to experimental results, the laser output power can exceed 3 dBm and the wavelength tuning range reaches 45 nm from 1035 to 1080 nm under an optical side-mode suppression ratio greater than 55 dB. Moreover, stable and flat laser output with negligible power fluctuations can be maintained for over 1 h. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
