ABSTRACT A new tunable 1060-nm fiber ring laser based on a hybrid amplifier is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The hybrid amplifier includes an ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier with a 70-cm Yb-doped fiber and a semiconductor optical amplifier. The proposed laser can provide low relative intensity noise and a narrow linewidth. According to experimental results, the laser output power can exceed 3 dBm and the wavelength tuning range reaches 45 nm from 1035 to 1080 nm under an optical side-mode suppression ratio greater than 55 dB. Moreover, stable and flat laser output with negligible power fluctuations can be maintained for over 1 h. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, a simple approach for photonic generation of microwave signal using a dual-wavelength single longitudinal mode fiber ring laser is proposed and demonstrated.A narrow transmission band fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based Fabry-Perot cavity is used to select the longitudinal mode. A FBG with reflectivity of 99.5% is used together with 2-m unpumped erbium-doped fiber acting as saturable absorber. Stable dual-wavelength single longitudinal mode fiber lasers with a wavelength separation of approximately 0.057 nm are experimentally realized. By beating the dual-wavelength fiber lasers at a photodetector, photonic generation of microwave signal at 7.129 GHz is successfully obtained. Both of the laser emission and generated microwave signal have good stability at room temperature. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A passively mode-locked Er3+-doped fiber ring laser is experimentally investigated, with the emphasis on its practical design by considering the effects of ring cavity length, pumping light power, and optical amplification on the femtosecond optical pulses obtained. It is shown that the designed fiber ring laser can operate at the center wavelength of 1550 nm to produce a train of periodic optical pulses with full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 270 fs, repetition frequency of 20 MHz, and average output optical power of 146 μW. The resulting femtosecond optical pulses are then amplified by using three kinds of Er3+-doped optical fibers with different lengths and Er3+-doped concentrations, respectively, while employing the same pumping laser. In the experiments, both the FWHM of amplified optical pulses and the amplifier gain are measured under different conditions. The optimization of optical pulse width is also carried out in terms of pumping light power. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A Fabry-Perot filter is realized by inscribing two identical 1 mm uniform Bragg gratings separated by 7.7 mm space in the hydrogen-loaded photosensitive optical fiber. It is then incorporated with a tunable chirped fiber Bragg grating into a fiber ring cavity. Fourteen single-wavelength lasings from 1552.186 nm to 1553.453 nm with average 97.5 pm spacing, and 13 pairs of dual-wavelength lasings within the above wavelength range are achieved stably. This kind of laser will be very useful in applications requiring close-spacing and tunable single- or dual-wavelength components and systems. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABSTRACT The article describes a simple design to make a widely tunable fiber Bragg grating (FBG) filter with a minimum tuning range of 0.02 nm, and its application to develop a widely tunable, single-longitudinal-mode, medium-power fiber laser. The tunable grating was developed using a commercially available FBG. The maximum tuning range of the laser was 35 nm, which was due to the available gain from the laser gain medium. The laser was operating at room temperature. The laser was free from mode hopping and produced more than 300 mW output power at room temperature. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We propose a simple configuration of a traveling wave tunable semiconductor fiber ring laser. A delay-time tunable, actively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber ring laser is demonstrated by using a voltage-controlled phase-locked phase shifter as an inherent timing module. By changing the voltage from -3.35 to 3.6 V, the maximum tuning range of the phase and the delay time of the optical pulse train repeated at 500 MHz from the laser can be up to 340° (∼1.9π) and 1.9 ns (nearly one period), respectively, under a tuning responsivity of 0.27 ps/mV. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
