Wisdom is knowledge that can be applied to various situations and can be impacted by learning experiences such as failure (Lee et al., 2020). This study focused on failure as a predictor for wisdom and identified factors that aid in explaining the relationship between the two. Two potential mediators were identified: resiliency, the ability to "bounce back" after hardship (Southwick et al., 2005); and posttraumatic growth (PTG), the positive psychological change after a traumatic event (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 1996). College students (N=218, Mage = 19.88) identified the degree of subjective impact for various failure experiences. Participants then completed measures evaluating resiliency, PTG, and wisdom. A sequential mediation model yielded that the subjective impact of failure experiences was negatively associated with resiliency (β = -.13, p, .01) and PTG (β=-.11, p< .05), but positively associated with wisdom (β=.11, p, .01). Resiliency (β = -.11, p< .05) and PTG (β = .17, p< .05) mediated the relationship between failure and wisdom; interestingly, resilience suppressed the interaction while PTG promoted the interaction. These results suggest that PTG has a significant influence over wisdom following failure; however, resilience may interfere with such interaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
