This article examines the warming of steel in a tundish during the continuous casting of grades of steel that are used in critical applications. The authors examine how the introduction of an organic addition to the powdered slag-forming mixture affects its thermal conductivity. Quantitative relations are obtained to describe the dependence of the thermal conductivity and bulk density of the mixture on its content of rice husks. A comparative analysis of the warming properties of heat-insulating mixtures used at the leading Russian combines and powdered assimilating mixtures containing rice husks shows that the latter can be used without additional insulation. The question is considered of assimilating non-metallic inclusions from metal by slag in a tundish during steel casting intended for cold rolling. The authors study changes in slag composition in a tundish and develop new assimilating mix compositions. Proceeding from results of laboratory study of physiochemical properties of the mixes developed, the authors recommend an assimilating mix for industrial tests. Flotation and assimilation of nonmetallic inclusions from metal slag in steel-pouring ladles and tundishes during pouring steels with increased aluminum and sulfur content are considered. The authors study the formation of nonmetallic inclusions in a steel-pouring ladle during steel extra-furnace treatment, the process of submerged nozzle clogging during continuous casting, the change in slag composition in a tundish, and development of an assimilation mixture composition for a steel-pouring ladle. Laboratory studies are made of the physicochemical properties of a developed SFM. It is established that use of the new SFM makes it possible to improve nonmetallic inclusion assimilation in a steel-pouring ladle and does not lead to a marked change in slag chemical composition and physical properties in a tundish. A procedure is described for qualitative evaluation of the effect of binders on granulated slag-forming mixture (SFM) strength. A relationship is established for slip density and finished granulate bulk density on water content.
