Infection and inflammation appear to contribute to chronic disorders as diverse as peptic ulcer and atherosclerotic vascular disease, in a manner that was unrecognized until the last decade. Inflammation in the absence of frank infection apparently plays a role also in disorders of the central nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease. This volume examines evidence relating neurologic outcome in the child to in utero exposure to infection. Can infection that is not known to invade the brain directly cause injury to the brain of the fetus/infant and contribute to longterm neurologic disability?
