For the sixth and last time we present the productivity and the international impact of Dutch sociologists, measured in the period 1995-1997. Table 1 gives the ranking of the fifty most productive sociologists. This productivity is measured as a weighted sum of the publications, where the weight is based on the quality of the journal or publisher, the number of pages and the number of authors of the publication. The international impact of the participants and of all full professors in Dutch sociology research centers is presented in Table 6 This impact is based on the number of citations in the Social Science Citation Index in the period 1995-1997. In an analysis of the reasons for (non-) participation in the Top-50 project we show that the most important reason for participation is positioning one-self towards others (Table 1). The main reason for non-participation is in sufficient publications, followed by questions about usefulness and of principle (Table 2). Mokken scale analysis was used to investigate the cumulative pattern of the answers and the existence of different groups of publishers. In the last part of this article, we investigate the characteristics of publications and the relation between cooperation and characteristics of publications. Table 2 in this article contains the top-50 sociologists in terms of their publications in the period 1991-1993. Last year a similar ranking was presented by the authors. The method on which the publications are weighted is similar to last year, but the references are gathered directly from the authors. This approach makes it possible to present a ranking without a considerable time-lag. We also investigated the scientific quality of Dutch journals and national and international publishers, which enabled us to establish a more accurate ranking. Table 1 in this article contains the top-50 sociologists in terms of their publications in the period 1988-1990. The score is based on the scientific publications in the scientific reports of the Dutch universities. The publication is weighted according to its size and scientific quality of the journal or publisher. In case of multiple authorship, the publication score is equally divided over the authors.
