Rationale: Traumatic displacement of teeth into the maxillary sinus is rare. This report described a case of 2 molars accidentally displaced into the maxillary sinus and the retrieval of teeth assisted by computer-assisted navigation. Patient concern: A 16-year-old male patient suffered from maxillofacial trauma with the first and second molars in the left maxilla were missing, and an orificium fistula to the maxillary sinus appeared in the dentition region of molars. Diagnose: The tomography revealed 2 tooth-like hyperdensity images in the left maxillary sinus. Intervention: Computer-assisted navigation surgery was scheduled for the retrieval surgery, and the displaced teeth were removed from the maxillary sinus smoothly. Outcomes: The patient displayed uneventful wound healing without postoperative complications in the maxillary sinus. Lessons: Surgeons should be alert to the presence of missing teeth in maxillofacial trauma and avoid missed diagnosis, and computer-assisted navigation is recommended for the retrieval of teeth displaced into the maxillary sinus.

Background All cancers increase developing venous thromboembolism risk, and VTE is the second-leading cause of death among cancer patients. The anticoagulant drugs are considered to be the optimal treatment for patients with cancer-associated VTE. However, there is still controversy whether rivaroxaban, a new oral anticoagulant, can lead to better outcomes globally. Methods We will search PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and China National Knowledge Infrastructure for relevant published studies before 1 September, 2019, without any language restrictions. Only published randomized controlled trials that meet the inclusion criteria will be included. Subgroup analysis of the type of cancer, the type of VTE, cancer stage, age, sex, ethnicity, history of smoking and drinking as well as the mean, dose and duration of anticoagulants will be performed. Discussion Our study aims to estimate the efficacy and safety of rivaroxaban for patients with cancer-associated VTE and to provide recommendations to key stakeholders. Migraine is increasingly being reported as a risk factor for primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). However, studies aimed to investigate this association yielded conflicting results. To assess the consistency of the data on the topic, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis. A systematic literature search from Embase, Web of Science, and PubMed was performed to identify relevant studies on the relationship between migraine and POAG. Random effects models were used to estimate the pooled relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) in this meta-analysis. A total of 11 studies meeting the inclusion criteria were included in this meta-analysis. Our findings showed an RR of developing POAG of 1.24 (95% CI = 1.12–1.37) in migraine patients. No evidence of significant heterogeneity was detected across studies (P = .071; I2 = 41.7%). This association was not modified by the glaucoma type of the included patients. A significant association was observed in case–control design studies, but not in cohort design studies. Little evidence of publication bias was found. The findings of this meta-analysis suggest that migraine can significantly increase the risk of the development of POAG. However, the cohort study design failed to identify this association. Whether migraines can significantly increase the risk of developing POAG is still controversial.

Background: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was to evaluate whether intravenous steroids would result in reduced acute pain and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) among patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Methods: Electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library, were searched to identify articles published from database inception to July 2016. RCTs that compared the effects of intravenous steroids with the effects of placebo among patients undergoing TKA were included in this meta-analysis. The primary outcomes were visual analogue scale (VAS) scores after 12, 24, and 48 hours of rest and PONV incidence. The secondary outcomes were blood glucose levels and incidence of infection. We calculated the risk ratio (RR) with its corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) for dichotomous outcomes and the mean difference (MD) with its corresponding 95% CI for continuous outcomes. Results: Seven clinical trials involving 434 patients were included in the final meta-analysis. The pooled results indicated that intravenous steroids were associated with decreased VAS scores after 24 hours (MD = −10.21, 95%CI = −18.80 to −1.63, P = .020) and 48 hours (MD = −2.60, 95%CI = −4.70 to −0.50, P = .015) of rest. Moreover, intravenous steroids were also associated with decreased risk of nausea (RR = 0.58, 95% CI 0.44–0.77, P = .000) and vomiting (RR = 0.46, 95% CI = 0.24–0.88, P = .019). However, intravenous steroids were also associated with increased blood glucose levels. No significant difference in the risk of infection was identified between the 2 groups. Conclusion: Intravenous steroids may be associated with decreased pain intensity and decreased risk of nausea and vomiting during the early period following TKA. However, evidence supporting its use is limited by the low quality of and variations in dosing regimens between the included RCTs. Thus, more high-quality RCTs are needed to identify the optimal drug administration intervals for maximal pain control.
