Between General Franco's agony (October/November 1975) and the constitution's approval (December 1978), European media reported intensively about the democratisation process in Spain. The present paper deals with its examination through the Radio della Svizzera di lingua italiana broadcasts. As the only Swiss Italian-speaking broadcaster, it tried to provide in-depth information and opinion on a country whose solid ties with Switzerland were based on economy, migration and tourism. The study of this non-commercial radio allows us to determine the way the democratisation was approached and portrayed for a Swiss audience and offers a genuine case for transnational historical research. This article presents a comparative historical analysis of the relationship between journalism as institution (i.e., a particular set of organizations in society) and journalism as work (i.e., an activity practiced by individuals) in four European countries: Britain, Sweden, Germany, and Estonia. The analysis compares the institutional context of journalistic work in these four countries around 1860, focusing in particular on the organization of journalistic labor at the national newspaper of record. The historical comparison reveals how exceptional the British case is. The study finds that British journalism circa 1860 exhibited a high division of labor, high labor specialization, and was increasingly focused on news gathering and production. Swedish and German journalism exhibited an emerging division of labor and labor specialization, and was focused on political debate (rather than news gathering and production). Recent contributions to knowledge about early journalism developed in different parts of Europe-Italy, France, England, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain ... -have made it possible to trace a fairly precise map for the historical origin of this phenomenon. However, the scope of work carried out with a view to developing frameworks of interpretation to explain the reasons for this appearance is not as far-reaching. This paper reviews the recurring theoretical models found to date in the specific bibliography and proposes a new framework of interpretation, capable of encompassing the complexity and pan-European nature of early journalism in history. This article analyses the dissemination of news in the Spanish language throughout Europe during the seventeenth century, with attention given to the principal strategies put into effect by printers, publishers, entrepreneurs, and newsmongers for printed newssheets. Concretely, it analyses how the emergence of several weekly newspapers occurred in the Low Countries, both in those areas under the Spanish monarchy (with Brussels as the main focus for the emission of news) and those that were not (with Amsterdam and the Jewish community originating from the Iberian peninsula as the basic news agents), and their reception and redistribution within Spain. Here, in their turn, certain cities stood out that, for various reasons, received and distributed news from several parts of Europe; these were principally Seville, San Sebastián and Barcelona, where, besides, genuine news offices were established. The author of this article illustrates the transmission of news from England to the newspapers of the Habsburg Netherlands over the 40-year period 1620-1660, and the types of news so conveyed. Such news of politics, war, diplomacy, religion, trade, justice, and prodigies, came not only directly from England but also through news centers on the Continent, indicating the flexibility of the communications networks. Newspapers, in the sense of printed news periodicals available to the general public, made their appearance throughout Western Europe in the first half of the seventeenth century.
