Interior permanent magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs) driven with a square-wave control (i.e., six-step, block, or 120° control), known commonly as brushless direct current (BLDC) drives, are used widely due to their high power density and control simplicity. The advance firing (AF) angle is employed to achieve improved operation characteristics of the drive. The AF angle is, in general, applied to compensate for the commutation effects. In the case of an IPMSM, the AF angle can also be adjusted to exploit reluctance torque. In this paper, a detailed study was performed to understand its effect on the drive's performance in regard to reluctance torque. Furthermore, a multi-objective optimization of the machine's cross-section using neural network models was conducted to enhance performance at a constant AF angle. The reference and improved machine designs were evaluated in a system-level simulation, where the impact was considered of the commutation of currents. Short-term traffic flow forecasting, an essential enabler for intelligent transportation systems, is a fundamental and challenging task for dramatically changing traffic flow over time. In this paper, we present a gravitational search optimized kernel extreme learning machine, named GSA-KELM, to avoid manually traversing all possible parameters to improve the potential performance. Furthermore, with the interference of heavy-tailed impulse noise, the performance of KELM may be seriously deteriorated. Based on the Kalman filter that cleverly combines observed data and estimated data to perform the closed-loop management of errors and limit the errors within a certain range, we propose a combined model, termed GSA-KELM-KF. This study employs a supervised learning method to predict the tunnel boring machine (TBM) penetration rate (PR) with high accuracy. To this end, the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model is optimized based on two swarm intelligence algorithms, i.e., the sparrow search algorithm (SSA) and the whale optimization algorithm (WOA). Three other machine learning models, including random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and artificial neural network (ANN) models, are also developed as the drawback. A database created in Shenzhen (China), comprising 503 entries and featuring 10 input variables and 1 output variable, was utilized to train and test the prediction models. The model development results indicate that the use of SSA and WOA has the potential to improve the XGBoost model performance in predicting the TBM performance. The performance evaluation results show that the proposed WOA-XGBoost model has achieved the most satisfactory performance by resulting in the most reliable prediction accuracy of the four performance indices. This research serves as a compelling illustration of how combined approaches, such as supervised learning methods and swarm intelligence algorithms, can enhance TBM prediction performance and can provide a reference when solving other related engineering problems. In classical survival analysis, it is assumed that all the individuals will experience the event of interest. However, if there is a proportion of subjects who will never experience the event, then a standard survival approach is not appropriate, and cure models should be considered instead. This paper deals with the problem of adapting a machine learning approach for classical survival analysis to a situation when cure (i.e., not suffering the event) is a possibility. Specifically, a brief review of cure models and recent machine learning methodologies is presented, and an adaptation of machine learning approaches to account for cured individuals is introduced. In order to validate the proposed methods, we present an extensive simulation study in which we compare the performance of the adapted machine learning algorithms with existing cure models. The results show the good behavior of the semiparametric or the nonparametric approaches, depending on the simulated scenario. The practical utility of the methodology is showcased through two real-world dataset illustrations. In the first one, the results show the gain of using the nonparametric mixture cure model approach. During the service of rotating machinery, the pedestal bolts are prone to looseness due to the vibration environment, which affects the performance of rotating machinery and generate potential safety hazard. To monitor the occurrence and deterioration of the pedestal looseness in time, this paper proposes a data-driven diagnosis strategy for the rotor-bearing system. Firstly, the finite element model of a rotor-bearing system is established, which considers the piecewise nonlinear force caused by pedestal looseness. Taking the vibration response as output and periodic unbalanced force as input, the system's NARX (Nonlinear Auto-Regressive with exogenous inputs) model is identified. Then GALEs (Generalized Associated Linear Equations) are used to evaluate NOFRFs (Nonlinear Output Frequency Response Functions) of the NARX model. Based on the first three-order NOFRFs, the analytical expression of the second-order optimal weighted contribution rate is derived and used as a new health indicator. The simulation results show that compared with the conventional NOFRFs-based health indicator, the new indicator is more sensitive to weak looseness. Finally, a rotor-bearing test rig was built, and the pedestal looseness was performed. The experiment results show that as the degree of looseness increases, the new indicator SRm shows a monotonous upward trend, increasing from 0.48 in no looseness to 0.90 in severe looseness, a rise of 89.7%. However, the traditional indicator Fe2 has no monotonicity, which further verifies the sensitivity of the first three-order NOFRFs-based second-order optimal weighted contribution rate and the effectiveness of the proposed data-driven feature extraction strategy. Applying machine learning algorithms to graph-structured data has garnered significant attention in recent years due to the prevalence of inherent graph structures in real-life datasets. However, the direct application of traditional deep learning algorithms, such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), is limited as they are designed for regular Euclidean data like 2D grids and 1D sequences. In contrast, graph-structured data are in a non-Euclidean form. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) are specifically designed to handle non-Euclidean data and make predictions based on connectivity rather than spatial structure. Real-life graph data can be broadly categorized into two types: spatially-invariant graphs, where the link structure between nodes is independent of their spatial positions, and spatially-variant graphs, where node positions provide additional information about the graph's properties. However, there is limited understanding of the effect of spatial variance on the performance of Graph Neural Networks. In this study, we aim to address this issue by comparing the performance of GNNs and CNNs on spatially-variant and spatially-invariant graph data. In the case of spatially-variant graphs, when represented as adjacency matrices, they can exhibit Euclidean-like spatial structure. Based on this distinction, we hypothesize that CNNs may outperform GNNs when working with spatially-variant graphs, while GNNs may excel on spatially-invariant graphs. To test this hypothesis, we compared the performance of CNNs and GNNs under two scenarios: (i) graphs in the training and test sets had the same connectivity pattern and spatial structure, and (ii) graphs in the training and test sets had the same connectivity pattern but different spatial structures. Our results confirmed that the presence of spatial structure in a graph allows for the effective use of CNNs, which may even outperform GNNs. Thus, our study contributes to the understanding of the effect of spatial graph structure on the performance of machine learning methods and allows for the selection of an appropriate algorithm based on the spatial properties of the real-life graph dataset. There are many state-of-the-art algorithms presented in the literature that perform very well on some evaluation data but are not studied with the data properties on which they are applied; therefore, they could have low performance on data with other characteristics. In this paper, the results of comprehensive research regarding the prediction with the frequently applied AdaBoost algorithm on real-world sensor data are presented. The chosen dataset has some specific characteristics, and it contains error and failure data of several machines and their components. The research aims to investigate whether the AdaBoost algorithm has the capability of predicting failures, thus providing the necessary information for monitoring and condition-based maintenance (CBM). The dataset is analyzed, and the principal characteristics are presented. Performance evaluations of the AdaBoost algorithm that we present show a prediction capability below expectations for this algorithm. The specificity of this study is that it indicates the limitation of the AdaBoost algorithm, which could perform very well on some data, but not so well on others. Based on this research and some others that we performed, and actual research from worldwide studies, we must outline that the mathematical analysis of the data is especially important to develop or adapt algorithms to be very efficient. Success in the industrial sector is compromised by diverse conditions such as imperfect product production, manufacturing line interruptions, and unscheduled maintenance. The precise use of common practices in production environments is an available solution to eliminate some of these issues. Applying a warm-up period in a manufacturing process is adequate and cost-effective for almost all companies. It improves the equipment's productivity and helps the manufacturing line generate fewer defective products. Even though several inventory management studies have included a warm-up phase in their models, its use in economic production quantity (EPQ) models remains largely unexplored. Adding a warm-up phase to the production cycle minimizes maintenance expenses and defective products and increases the machine's performance. In this study, the dependency between the machine downtime and the warm-up length is examined for the first time. The warm-up time depends on the machine's off-state period: if the machine has a longer operation timeout, then a longer warm-up period is needed. The model includes a function to model the warm-up time relative to the machine downtime and two types of defective products: scrapping and reworking items. The results of testing the algorithms of the adaptive model of a synchronous generator using theoretical and real physical data are presented in this study. The adaptive model of a synchronous machine is an equations system, which describes both the static and transient operation of a generator. Parameters of the adaptive model are found using measurements of a generator's operational parameters. The single-machine model was created in Matlab/Simulink software to test the theoretical data. This single-machine model consists of a synchronous generator, a step-up transformer, and a transmission line. The test model also includes models of the automatic voltage regulator and steam turbine governor. The real electrodynamic model was used to verify the adaptive model of a synchronous machine. It consisted of four synchronous generators, with values of power capacity of 5 kW and 15 kW. The data logger with a sampling rate of 57.8 kHz was developed and installed to measure the operating parameters of each generator. As a result of testing on both models, the following values were estimated: inertia moment, d-axis and q-axis reactance, and load angle. These values were compared with the reference values. Permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) have garnered increasing interest because of their advantages such as high efficiency, high power density, wide speed range, and fast dynamics. They have been employed recently in several industrial applications including robotics and electric vehicles (EVs). However, PMSMs have highly nonlinear magnetic characteristics, especially interior PMSMs, due to the existence of reluctance torque. Nonlinearity complicates not only machine modeling but also control algorithms. An accurate machine model is the key aspect for the prediction of machine performance as well as the development of a high-performance control algorithm. Hence, this paper presents an accurate modelling method for PMSMs. The proposed model method is applicable for all PMSMs, even multiphase machines. This paper considers a fractional slot concentrated winding 12/10 interior PMSM (IPMSM) for this study to demonstrate the effect of magnetic saturation and special harmonics. The developed model considers accurately the magnetic saturation, mutual coupling, spatial harmonics, and iron loss effects. It utilizes finite element analysis (FEA) to estimate the precise magnetic characteristics of IPMSM. The finite element model is calibrated precisely using experimental measurements. Synthetic data consists of artificially generated data. When data are scarce, or of poor quality, synthetic data can be used, for example, to improve the performance of machine learning models. Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are a state-of-the-art deep generative models that can generate novel synthetic samples that follow the underlying data distribution of the original dataset. Reviews on synthetic data generation and on GANs have already been written. However, none in the relevant literature, to the best of our knowledge, has explicitly combined these two topics. This survey aims to fill this gap and provide useful material to new researchers in this field. That is, we aim to provide a survey that combines synthetic data generation and GANs, and that can act as a good and strong starting point for new researchers in the field, so that they have a general overview of the key contributions and useful references. We have conducted a review of the state-of-the-art by querying four major databases: Web of Sciences (WoS), Scopus, IEEE Xplore, and ACM Digital Library. This allowed us to gain insights into the most relevant authors, the most relevant scientific journals in the area, the most cited papers, the most significant research areas, the most important institutions, and the most relevant GAN architectures. GANs were thoroughly reviewed, as well as their most common training problems, their most important breakthroughs, and a focus on GAN architectures for tabular data. Further, the main algorithms for generating synthetic data, their applications and our thoughts on these methods are also expressed. Finally, we reviewed the main techniques for evaluating the quality of synthetic data (especially tabular data) and provided a schematic overview of the information presented in this paper. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) has been widely applied to evaluate the performance of banks, enterprises, governments, research institutions, hospitals, and other fields as a non-parametric estimation method for evaluating the relative effectiveness of research objects. However, the composition of its effective frontier surface is based on the input-output data of existing decision units, which makes it challenging to apply the method to predict the future performance level of other decision units. In this paper, the Slack Based Measure (SBM) model in DEA method is used to measure the relative efficiency values of decision units, and then, eleven machine learning models are used to train the absolute efficient frontier to be applied to the performance prediction of new decisions units. To further improve the prediction effect of the models, this paper proposes a training set under the DEA classification method, starting from the training-set sample selection and input feature indicators. In this paper, regression prediction of test set performance based on the training set under different classification combinations is performed, and the prediction effects of proportional relative indicators and absolute number indicators as machine-learning input features are explored. The robustness of the effective frontier surface under the integrated model is verified. An integrated models of DEA and machine learning with better prediction effects is proposed, taking China's regional carbon-dioxide emission (carbon emission) performance prediction as an example. The novelty of this work is mainly as follows: firstly, the integrated model can achieve performance prediction by constructing an effective frontier surface, and the empirical results show that this is a feasible methodological technique. Secondly, two schemes to improve the prediction effectiveness of integrated models are discussed in terms of training set partitioning and feature selection, and the effectiveness of the schemes is demonstrated by using carbon-emission performance prediction as an example.
