This paper deals with an adaptation of the Poincare-Lindstedt method for the determination of periodic orbits in three-dimensional nonlinear differential systems. We describe here a general symbolic algorithm to implement the method and apply it to compute periodic solutions in a three-dimensional Lotka-Volterra system modeling a chain food interaction. The sufficient conditions to make secular terms disappear from the approximate series solution are given in the paper.

This paper is concerned with computable and guaranteed upper bounds of the difference between exact solutions of variational inequalities arising in the theory of viscous fluids and arbitrary approximations in the corresponding energy space. Such estimates (also called error majorants of functional type) have been derived for the considered class of nonlinear boundary-value problems in (Math. Meth. Appl. Sci. 2006; 29:2225–2244) with the help of variational methods based on duality theory from convex analysis. In the present paper, it is shown that error majorants can be derived in a different way by certain transformations of the variational inequalities that define generalized solutions. The error bounds derived by this techniques for the velocity function differ from those obtained by the variational method. These estimates involve only global constants coming from Korn- and Friedrichs-type inequalities, which are not difficult to evaluate in case of Dirichlet boundary conditions. For the case of mixed boundary conditions, we also derive another form of the estimate that contains only one constant coming from the following assertion: the L2 norm of a vector-valued function from H1(Ω) in the factor space generated by the equivalence with respect to rigid motions is bounded by the L2 norm of the symmetric part of the gradient tensor. As for some ‘simple’ domains such as squares or cubes, the constants in this inequality can be found analytically (or numerically), we obtain a unified form of an error majorant for any domain that admits a decomposition into such subdomains. SUMMARY 9 In this paper we investigate the unknown body problem in a wave guide where one boundary has a pressure release condition and the other an impedance condition. The method used in the paper for 11 solving the unknown body inverse problem is the intersection canonical body approximation (ICBA). The ICBA is based on the Rayleigh conjecture, which states that every point on an illuminated body 13 radiates sound from that point as if the point lies on its tangent sphere. The ICBA method requires that an analytical solution be known exterior to a canonical body in the wave guide. We use the sphere of 15 arbitrary centre and radius in the wave guide as our canonical body. We are lead then to analytically computing the exterior solution for a sphere between two parallel plates. We use the ICBA to construct 17 solutions at points ranging over the suspected surface of the unknown object to reconstruct the unknown

In this paper, we establish existence and finite time blow up of weak solutions of a parabolic equation of p(x)-Laplacian type with the Dirichlet boundary condition. Moreover, we obtain upper and lower bounds for the blow up time of solutions, by employing concavity method and differential inequality technique respectively.

In this paper we consider the inviscid limit for the periodic solutions to Navier-Stokes equation in the framework of Gevrey class. It is shown that the lifespan for the solutions to Navier-Stokes equation is independent of viscosity, and that the solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation converge to that of Euler equation in Gevrey class as the viscosity tends to zero. Moreover the convergence rate in Gevrey class is presented.

In this paper, we are concerned with the system of the non-isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the Maxwell equations through the Lorentz force in three space dimensions. The global existence of solutions near constant steady states is established, and the time-decay rates of perturbed solutions are obtained. The proof for existence is due to the classical energy method, and the investigation of large-time behavior is based on the linearized analysis of the non-isentropic Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations and the electromagnetic part for the linearized isentropic Navier-Stokes-Maxwell equations. In the meantime, the time-decay rates obtained by Zhang, Li, and Zhu~[{\it J. Differential Equations, 250(2011), 866-891}] for the linearized non-isentropic Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations are improved.

This paper is concerned with the mathematical analysis of the electromagnetic wave scattering by an unbounded dielectric medium, which is mounted on a perfectly conducting infinite plane. By introducing a transparent boundary condition on a plane surface confining the medium, the scattering problem is modeled as a boundary value problem of Maxwell's equations. Based on a variational formulation, the problem is shown to have a unique weak solution for a wide class of dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability by using the generalized Lax–Milgram theorem. In the present paper we study the vector potential problem in exterior domains of R^3. Our approach is based on the use of weighted spaces in order to describe the behaviour of functions at infinity. As a first step of the investigation, we prove important results on the Laplace equation in exterior domains with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. As a consequence of the obtained results on the vector potential problem, we establish usefull results on weighted Sobolev inequalities and Helmholtz decompositions of weighted spaces.

In this paper, the stability problem of impulsive functional differential equations with infinite delays is considered. By using Lyapunov functions and the Razumikhin technique, some new theorems on the uniform stability and uniform asymptotic stability are obtained. The obtained results are milder and more general than several recent works. Two examples are given to demonstrate the advantages of the results. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In the present paper, the two-step difference scheme for the Cauchy problem for the stochastic hyperbolic equation is presented. The convergence estimate for the solution of the difference scheme is established. In applications, the convergence estimates for the solution of difference schemes for the numerical solution of four problems for hyperbolic equations are obtained. The theoretical statements for the solution of this difference scheme are supported by the results of the numerical experiment.

Interface problems modeled by differential equations have many applications in mathematical biology, fluid mechanics, material sciences, and many other areas. Typically, interface problems are characterized by discontinuities in the coefficients and/or the Dirac delta function singularities in the source term. Due to these irregularities, solutions to the differential equations are not smooth or discontinuous. In this paper, some new results on the jump conditions of the solution across the interface are derived using the distribution theory and the theory of weak solutions. Some theoretical results on the boundary singularity in which the singular delta function is at the boundary are obtained. Finally, the proof of the convergency of the Immersed Boundary method is presented. The IB method is shown to be first order convergent in L(∞) norm.

In this paper we study a nonlinear transmission problem for a plate which consists of thermoelastic and isothermal parts. The problem generates a dynamical system in a suitable Hilbert space. Main result is the proof of the asymptotic smoothness of this dynamical system. Also we prove the existence of a compact global attractor in particular cases when the nonlinearity is of Berger type or scalar., 23 pages

This paper describes existence, uniqueness and special eigenfunction representations of H1-solutions of second order, self-adjoint, elliptic equations with both interior and boundary source terms. The equations are posed on bounded regions with Dirichlet conditions on part of the boundary and Neumann conditions on the complement. The system is decomposed into separate problems defined on orthogonal subspaces of H1(Ω). One problem involves the equation with the interior source term and the Neumann data. The other problem just involves the homogeneous equation with Dirichlet data. Spectral representations of the solution operators for each of these problems are found. The solutions are described using bases that are, respectively, eigenfunctions of the differential operator with mixed null boundary conditions, and certain mixed Steklov eigenfunctions. These series converge strongly in H1(Ω). Necessary and sufficient conditions for the Dirichlet part of the boundary data to have a finite energy extension are described. The solutions for a problem that models a cylindrical capacitor is found explicitly. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

We construct $L_p$-estimates for the inhomogeneous Oseen system studied in a two dimensional exterior domain $\Omega$ with inhomogeneous slip boundary conditions. The kernel of the paper is a result for the half space $\mathbb{R}^2_+$. Analysis of this model system shows us a parabolic character of the studied problem, resulting as an appearance of the wake region behind the obstacle. Main tools are given by the Fourier analysis to obtain the maximal regularity estimates. The results imply the solvability for the Navier-Stokes system for small velocity at infinity.

In the paper we consider three classes of models describing carcinogenesis mutations. Every considered model is described by the system of (n+1) equations, and in each class three models are studied: the first is expressed as a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), the second—as a system of reaction–diffusion equations (RDEs) with the same kinetics as the first one and with the Neumann boundary conditions, while the third is also described by the system of RDEs but with the Dirichlet boundary conditions. The models are formulated on the basis of the Lotka–Volterra systems (food chains and competition systems) and in the case of RDEs the linear diffusion is considered. The differences between studied classes of models are expressed by the kinetic functions, namely by the form of kinetic function for the last variable, which reflects the dynamics of malignant cells (that is the last stage of mutations). In the first class the models are described by the typical food chain with favourable unbounded environment for the last stage, in the second one—the last equation expresses competition between the pre-malignant and malignant cells and the environment is also unbounded, while for the third one—it is expressed by predation term but the environment is unfavourable. The properties of the systems in each class are studied and compared. It occurs that the behaviour of solutions to the systems of ODEs and RDEs with the Neumann boundary conditions is similar in each class; i.e. it does not depend on diffusion coefficients, but strongly depends on the class of models. On the other hand, in the case of the Dirichlet boundary conditions this behaviour is related to the magnitude of diffusion coefficients. For sufficiently large diffusion coefficients it is similar independently of the class of models, i.e. the trivial solution that is unstable for zero diffusion gains stability. This work gives a condition for existence of singular and delta shock wave solutions to Riemann problem for 2×2 systems of conservation laws. For a fixed left-hand side value of Riemann data, the condition obtained in the paper describes a set of possible right-hand side values. The procedure is similar to the standard one of finding the Hugoniot locus. Fluxes of the considered systems are globally Lipschitz with respect to one of the dependent variables. In this paper, we study the partial Fourier method for treating the Lame equations in three-dimensional axisymmetric domains subjected to non-axisymmetric loads. We consider the mixed boundary value problem of the linear theory of elasticity with the displacement u, the body force f ϵ (L2)3 and homogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The partial Fourier decomposition reduces, without any error, the three-dimensional boundary value problem to an infinite sequence of two-dimensional boundary value problems, whose solutions un (n = 0, 1, 2,…) are the Fourier coefficients of u. This process of dimension reduction is described, and appropriate function spaces are given to characterize the reduced problems in two dimensions. The trace properties of these spaces on the rotational axis and some properties of the Fourier coefficients un are proved, which are important for further numerical treatment, e.g. by the finite-element method. Moreover, generalized completeness relations are described for the variational equation, the stresses and the strains. The properties of the resulting system of two-dimensional problems are characterized. Particularly, a priori estimates of the Fourier coefficients un and of the error of the partial Fourier approximation are given. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The solution of Maxwell’s equations in a non-convex polyhedral domain is less regular than in a smooth or convex polyhedral domain. In this paper we show that this solution can be decomposed into the orthogonal sum of a singular part and a regular part, and we give a characterization of the singular part. We also prove that the decomposition is linked to the one associated to the scalar Laplacian. Copyright ( 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In this paper, we investigate Poincare type inequalities for the functions having zero mean value on the whole boundary of a Lipschitz domain or on a measurable part of the boundary. We find exact and easily computable constants in these inequalities for some basic domains (rectangles, cubes, and right triangles) and discuss applications of the inequalities to quantitative analysis of partial differential equations. A half-plane under plane wave excitation obeys a Dirichlet boundary condition on one side and a Neumann boundary condition on the other. These boundary conditions contrast the ones used by A. Sommerfeld in his classical paper. The present problem leads to a system of integral equations of the Wiener-Hopf type which may be solved by a matrix factoring method suggested by A. E. Heins in 1950.
