The freeze-casting is widely utilized as a tool for regulating micro-scale pore structures in the fabrication of flexible polyimide (PI) aerogels for applications in adsorption, filtration, and fire-retardant. Herein, a confinement-controlled freeze-casting method is developed to fabricate PI aerogels with excellent thermal insulation properties by designing multi-scale structural adaptability. In a confinement-controlled system, the enhanced solid/solid and solid/liquid interface interactions in the solution dispersion system induce dendritic evolution of ice crystals. Under the directional freezing, grown dendritic ice crystals squeeze the loaded particles to form polyamic acid salt (PAAs) cryogels. Followed by template removal and thermal imidization, PI aerogels with a micro/nano-scale slit-like porous structure were obtained. • Novel method is applied to fabricate SiC fiber-reinforced Al matrix composites. • SiC fibers with high volume fraction is introduced into the Al matrix uniformly. • SiC fiber significantly improve the mechanical properties of Al matrix composites. • Coefficient of thermal expansion decreases with increasing the SiC fibers' content. Combining the colloidal dispersion method with the squeeze melt infiltration technique, aluminum matrix composites with different volume fractions of silicon carbide fiber were fabricated at 680 °C under vacuum. Microstructure analysis found that composite presented a dense structure and fibers were homogeneously distributed in matrix. The hardness, yield strength and elastic modulus of the composite monotonically increased with increasing the volume fraction of fiber. The highest flexural strength for composite with 10 vol% SiC fiber was achieved. The improved mechanical properties could be attributed to the dispersion strengthening and enhanced load transferring ability by fibers as well as the dislocation strengthening. On the other hand, the coefficient of thermal expansion of composites was measured at temperature up to 400 °C. [Display omitted] • BNNS/ANF thermal conductivity insulating fibers were prepared via sol–gel wet spinning. • BNNS and ANF are connected to form a stable three-dimensional network structure. • The fibers have excellent mechanical properties and thermal conductivity. With the intensification of global warming and the occurrence of extremely hot weather, there is an urgent need for textiles that can effectively regulate temperature. Using amino-functionalized boron nitride nanosheets (K-BNNSs) and aramid nanofibers (ANFs) as materials, the well-oriented thermally conductive insulating textile fibers with "lotus root" structure were directly prepared by sol–gel wet spinning process. The axial thermal conductivity of a single fiber can be as high as 22.4 W/(m·K), and has an excellent tensile fracture strength (176.6 MPa). Thermal infrared imaging revealed that the fibers woven into textiles had a more significant heat dissipation capacity than commercial cotton fabrics. Different aggregate volume fractions and particle size gradations are designed, and the variations in mass loss, volume shrinkage, compressive strength, mineral composition, and microstructure of geopolymer mortar after exposure to high temperatures ranging from 20 ℃ to 1000 ℃ are investigated by testing mass loss, volume change, strength, XRD and SEM. The results show that the waste ceramic aggregates (WCA) applied in the preparation of geopolymer mortars improve the mechanical properties and high-temperature resistance. By optimizing aggregate particle size gradation, the microstructure of the geopolymer mortar becomes denser and more homogeneous, and the high-temperature resistance is further improved. The residual compressive strength at 1000 °C is 115.2 MPa, 476 % higher than that of reference. In this study, we developed a Support Vector Regression (SVR) model with a high coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.84) to predict the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) in Ni-based superalloys. Ten samples were selected and produced from a pool of candidates generated via genetic algorithm and the SVR model, revealing that seven of them exhibited superior CTE performance. Notably, the discovered alloy with the lowest CTE (11.0 e-6 °C-1 from RT to 900 °C) presented a remarkable 16.7 % reduction compared to the best performance in existing database. As an ablative thermal protection material, the mechanical properties and ablative resistance of carbon fiber/phenolic (C-Ph) composite should be improved to meet the high requirements in deep space exploration. Herein, the properties of C-Ph composites were improved by the synergistic effect of low-concentration graphene oxide (GO) solution and low mass fraction of SiO 2 nanoparticles. Compared to the unmodified C-Ph composite, the compressive strength of the modified composites was increased by 40.75 % and the linear and mass ablation rates were reduced by 17.78 % and 43.95 %, respectively. The introduction of GO effectively improved the interfacial bonding between the fiber and phenolic resin. Meanwhile, the uniformly dispersed SiO 2 nanoparticles resisted the applied loads, thus synergistically enhancing the mechanical properties of the composites. In terms of improving ablation resistance, GO promoted the graphitization of fibers and enhanced the stability of the char layer. • EG@Ag was prepared using a novel and simple electroless silver plating process. • The effect of EG@Ag on the thermal properties of erythritol has been discovered. • Substantial reduction in the supercooling of erythritol. In this paper, the composite PCMs of Erythritol (ET)/Expanded Graphite (EG)@Ag were prepared by vacuum impregnation method with EG@Ag as matrix and the ET as the phase change material (PCM). The chemical compatibility, thermodynamic properties and thermal stability of composite phase change materials (CPCMs) were systematically examined. The results illustrated that the CPCMs possessed good chemical compatibility with only physical interaction between ET and EG@Ag. The supercooling of ET/EG@Ag-8 wt% reduced by 42.13 °C, which also remain high melting and solidification enthalpy of −258.09 J/g and 187.63 J/g, respectively. The thermal conductivity of ET/EG@Ag-8 wt% reached to 2.87 W/(m·K), which resulted in an enhancement of 463 % in the thermal conductivity of ET. Thermal stability results show that all CPCMs of ET/EG@Ag present good thermal stability below 200 °C. • SiC p /Al composites were prepared based on Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) • Higher SiC volume fraction were obtained compared to other additive manufacturing methods. • complex-structure composites were prepared with excellent properties. The Cu/Fe/Kovar composites containing 10 wt% and 20 wt% Cu have a thermal conductivity of 24.7 W/(m·K) and 25.8 W/(m·K), respectively, which is 48 % and 54 % higher than that of the Kovar alloy (16.7 W/(m·K)). The impact strength of the blends without heat treatment increased with the increase of PBSG content. After heat treatment, the impact strength of the blends showed a tendency of first increasing and then decreasing with the increase of PBSG content, and the maximum impact strength of the blends before and after the heat treatment was 56.51 kJ/m2 and 46.08 kJ/m2, respectively. The heat treatment could greatly improve the vicat soft temperature and thermo-mechanical properties of the blends. After the heat treatment, the vicat soft temperature of all the blends exceeded 150 °C, and the storage modulus of all the blends exceeded 100 MPa, and the annealed PLA blend beard a 20 g weight could kept at 100 °C for 12 h with negligible deformation, which attributed to the improvement of the interface properties and the crystallization properties. • Doped CoSb 3 skutterudite nanopowder synthesized by physical vapor technique. • Nanostructured CoSb 3 fabricated by spark plasma sintering. • Thermal conductivity reduction by nanostructuring – demonstrated in doped CoSb 3. In this study, Fe 0.04 Co 0.96 Sb 3 nanopowder was synthesized using radio frequency induction plasma, starting from mechanically milled Fe, Co, and Sb powders. The as-synthesized powder was found to contain CoSb 3 , FeSb 2 , CoSb, and elemental Sb. Annealing of the synthesized powder at 600 °C for 12 h under argon atmosphere increased the fraction of CoSb 3. Spark plasma sintering of the annealed powder was carried out at 625 °C under 60 MPa pressure for fabrication into bulk nanostructured material. Thermal conductivity (k) of disks thus fabricated was found to be 1.78 ± 0.16 W/m.K at room temperature, which is significantly lesser than its microcrystalline counterpart (5.58 ± 0.60 W/m.K). Such a reduction in k could mainly be attributed to the enhanced phonon scattering occurring at the grain boundaries and interfaces present in the bulk nanostructured Fe 0.04 Co 0.96 Sb 3 sample, which is an added advantage for its use in the thermoelectric devices. Sb doped Mg 2 (Si 0.5 Sn 0.5) 1−x Sb x solid solutions have been prepared by fast and low-cost thermal explosion (TE) combined with plasma activated sintering (PAS) for the first time, exhibiting superior thermoelectric figure of merit ZT including peak ZT peak and average ZT ave. • Mg 2 (Si 0.5 Sn 0.5) 1−x Sb x solid solutions were synthesized by fast and facile thermal explosion method. • Phase segregation easily occurs during the synthesis process of the composition of 0.5Mg 2 Si-0.5Mg 2 Sn. • Sb doping enhances power factor, inhibits the bipolar diffusion effect and improves the thermoelectric figure of merit. Sb-doped Mg 2 Si 0.5 Sn 0.5 materials were successfully prepared by a fast thermal explosion reaction for the first time. • A promising microfluidic encapsulation technique is proposed. • A novel phase change heat storage microcapsule was developed. • Microencapsulated phase change materials for storage/release of thermal energy such as solar energy. Phase change materials (PCMs), renowned for their exceptional heat storage capabilities, have been extensively utilized in solar energy utilization. However, the persistent challenge of liquid leakage during their use remains unresolved. In this study, a promising microfluidic encapsulation technology is presented, leading to the development of a novel phase change heat storage microcapsule. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements confirm the retention of over 88% of the latent heat of the phase change material (up to 171.8 J/g). Additionally, CFD modeling demonstrates that the geometric structure of the microcapsules significantly enhances heat transfer, effectively addressing the issue of low heat transfer efficiency in PCM systems. Leakage tests have demonstrated the exceptional cyclic stability of microcapsule encapsulation, as it exhibits no leakage even after undergoing 100 consecutive melting-freezing cycles. This paper presents the experimental investigation on the thermal properties of mono and hybrid nanoPCM. Paraffin wax (PW) as base PCM is doped with CuO nanoparticles and CuO-GnP binary mixture respectively. CuO weight fraction is varied in PW from 0.5% −2.5%. The maximum improvement of 28.11% is noted in thermal conductivity at 2 wt% of CuO. GnP with loading levels of 0.5% − 2% are added to PW having constant wt% of CuO. The maximum improvement of 150.69% in thermal conductivity occurs at 1.5 wt% of GnP. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis shows latent heat and melting point of pure PW is reduced by 3.68% and 11.32% at 2 wt% concentration of CuO. On addition of GnP to the PW/CuO composite, the latent heat and melting point of PW/CuO GnP composite increases upto 1.5 wt% of GnP. Hence addition of CuO-GnP hybrid mixture to paraffin is viable solution for management of thermal energy storage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Display omitted] • A novel composite adsorbent has been developed using inexpensive graphite powder. • The synthesised composites are mesoporous, with a mean pore size of 20–60 Å. • 93% activated carbon + 5% graphite powder + 2 % PVA have good thermal conductivity. • The developed adsorbents have high crystallinity and thermal stability. In this research, novel composite adsorbent samples consisting of extremely porous carbon black from coconut shell, graphite powder, and polyvinyl alcohol binder were developed and characterized. The thermal conductivity, pore size distribution, pore volume, and specific surface area of synthesized composite adsorbent samples were investigated. The composite A (93% activated carbon + 5% graphite powder + 2 % PVA) has the largest pore volume of 0.3468 cm3/g and a specific surface area of 732 m2/g. It has a 11% greater thermal conductivity than its parent material, while maintaining the same mass transfer properties. Adding graphite powder (GP) to composite adsorbents beyond 5%, also increases their thermal conductivity significantly but compromising the adsorption capacity. Additionally, the maximum uptake of composite A is 0.37 g/g. The composite adsorbents exhibit thermal stability, as evidenced by X-ray diffraction analysis. The proposed composite adsorbents have improved thermophysical characteristics compared to pure and activated carbon-based composites for attaining the peak performance (Coefficient of performance and specific cooling power) of the adsorption cooling system. • Thermoresistant basalt fiber is incorporated in high strength PVA-ECC. • High temperature resistance of structural HSECC is evaluated. • Residual flexural strength is enhanced by basalt fiber. • Basalt fiber restrains the propagation of micro cracks, especially in hybrid HSECC. Engineered cementitious composites (ECC) predominantly prefer polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber as reinforcement. However, PVA fiber experiences melting at approximately 235 °C. When structures with high strength ECC (HSECC) occasionally suffer elevated temperatures or fire, PVA fiber would inevitably induce deterioration in mechanical properties and increase the probability of structural failure. In present study, basalt fiber with high temperature resistance was selected to replace PVA fiber, visual observations and strength deterioration of HSECC were evaluated after heating. The incorporation of basalt fiber has shown potential ability in improving flexural behavior of HSECC upon elevated temperatures. In this work, a novel ternary nanthermite is assembled by the prepared double-based metal oxide (CuBi 2 O 4), commercial Al and fluorinated graphene. Owing to the combining features of both CuO and Bi 2 O 3 , these formulations exhibit a higher energy release and pressure output. Besides, the introduction of fluorinated graphene further enhances the pressure release. Therefore, the thermite system containing 5 wt% fluorinated graphene displays violent deflagration process, which can perform a reliable destruction behavior for the simulative microchip in 4 ms with only 20 mg. • Narrow particle size distribution was achieved by organic solvent based wet milling. • Tetradecylphosphonic acid as a surface modifier shows anti-aggregation properties. • Glass powder with superior dispersion can meet a lower sintering temperature. Zinc borosilicate glass are crucial adhesive medium in modern electronic industry. However, it is still hard to prepare the zinc borosilicate glass with uniform particle size distribution. Herein, narrow particle size distribution and reduced hemispherical point temperature of zinc borosilicate glass was obtained by choosing low polarity, viscosity and surface tension organic solvent as well as surface modifier in the wet ball milling method. It is found that xylene, ethanol and isopropyl alcohol are good liquid medium for wet ball milling. Moreover, tetradecylphosphonic acid (TDPA) as a surface modifier could effectively reduce the formation of surface hydroxyl group in glass powder by the nucleophilic substitution reaction of the phosphonic acid group, showing superb anti-aggregation properties.
