Fabrication of conductive polyaniline nanofibers (PAnNFs) and poly(aniline-co-N-phenyl-o-phenylenediamine) nanoflakes [P(An-co-PoPD)] can promote a high surface area which influences rapid ion exchange and hence improved sensitivity in biosensor applications. Here, fabrication of two conductive films of PAnNFs from aniline monomer and a mixture of aniline/N-phenyl-o-phenylenediamine (oPD) monomers through cyclic voltammetry (potentiodynamic electropolymerization) technique was performed. The electrochemical features of aniline monomer generate polyaniline nanofibers compared to aniline with addition of oPD monomer that generate nano-flakes. Electro-fabricated electrodes were characterized by SEM, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). A molecular recognition layer of glucose oxidase within chitosan (GOx:CHI) was applied to the electrode-supported polymer and produced chronoamperometry dose–responses to different glucose molar concentrations with sensitivities that were larger for P(An-co-PoPD) compared to PAnNFs electrode.

In this communication, we report a smart membrane for both energy harvesting and oil/water separation application. The membrane was manufactured from polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofiber blended with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as a sustainable material. A promising result in energy harvesting from the cyclic load effect and in oil/water separation was achieved. The developed membranes were characterized for their morphology, functional group, and surface properties using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and water contact angle (WCA), respectivley. The membrane shows piezoelectric response result about 3.5 V and 10 nA corresponding to PVDF membrane comparing to PVDF@CNCs membrane. However, in oil/water separation application, PVDF@CNCs shows higher water flux (85646.43 ml/m2.h) comparing to pristine PVDF membrane (73589.29 ml/m2.h). These resulted membranes are promising in oily wastewater separation and in the application of powering sensors that capable of measuring water quality after separation and treatment process.

Third-generation biomaterials aim to stimulate specific cellular responses at the molecular level, these materials characterized with a resorbable and bioactivity that help body heal once they have been implanted. Here, a biomimetic method was used to generate hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoplates on the surface of AZ31B Mg alloy via anodization in simulated body fluid (SBF), followed by a hydrothermal (HT) process. The resulting nanoplates were characterized using FE-SEM, XRD, and FT-IR, surface hydrophobicity, in addition, corrosion was assessed electrochemically. The excellent bioactivity of the treated samples compared with naked ones were confirmed in vitro with MC3T3-E1 osteoblastic cells with significant growth and proliferation.

A biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol/silk fibroin (PVA/SF) nanofibrous heart patch with unique tensile properties was fabricated by an electrospinning technique based on a water-solvent system. The fabricated heart patches were exposed to 2% Glutaraldehyde vapor to provide a cross-linkage and tune the degradation behavior. Numerous characterizations of the modified PVA/SF patches such as surface morphology, chemical bonding, mechanical behavior, biodegradation, and biological assessment of the crosslinked PVA/SF patches were performed. It was found that pronounced and interconnected PVA/SF composite fibrous patches had an average nanofiber diameter of 228 ± 49 nm. In addition, incorporation of SF into PVA nanofibers enhanced the mechanical properties (i.e. tensile strength and tensile modulus) and tuning the degradation rate of the PVA/SF patch. Human cardiac fibroblast cells (HCFC) were cultured on the cross-linked composite patches and the results showed good cell proliferation and attachment on the patches bio-interface.
