In quasi-brittle materials such as concrete, numerical methods are frequently used to simulate the crack propagation for monotonic loading. However, further research and action are required to better understand the fracture properties under cyclic loading. For this purpose, in this study, we present numerical simulations of mixed-mode crack propagation in concrete using the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM). The crack propagation is developed based on a cohesive crack approach combined with the thermodynamic framework of a constitutive concrete model. For validation, two benchmark crack-mode examples are modelled under monotonic and cyclic loading conditions. The numerical results are compared against the results from available publications. Our approach revealed good consistency compared to the test measurements from the literature. The damage accumulation parameter was the most influential variable on the load-displacement results. The proposed method can provide a further investigation of crack growth propagation and damage accumulation for cyclic loading within the SBFEM framework.

Many concrete structures, such as bridges and wind turbine towers, fail mostly due to the fatigue rapture and bending, where the cracks are initiated and propagate under cyclic loading. Modeling the fracture process zone (FPZ) is essential to understanding the cracking behavior of heterogeneous, quasi-brittle materials such as concrete under monotonic and cyclic actions. The paper aims to present a numerical modeling approach for simulating crack growth using a scaled boundary finite element model (SBFEM). The cohesive traction law is explored to model the stress field under monotonic and cyclic loading conditions. In doing so, a new constitutive law is applied within the cohesive response. The cyclic damage accumulation during loading and unloading is formulated within the thermodynamic framework of the constitutive concrete model. We consider two common problems of three-point bending of a single-edge-notched concrete beam subjected to different loading conditions to validate the developed method. The simulation results show good agreement with experimental test measurements from the literature. The presented analysis can provide a further understanding of crack growth and damage accumulation within the cohesive response, and the SBFEM makes it possible to identify the fracture behavior of cyclic crack propagation in concrete members.

To give engineers involved in planning and designing of asphalt pavements a more accurate prediction of crack initiation and propagation, theory-based models need to be developed to connect the loading conditions and fracture mechanisms present in laboratory tests and under traffic loading. The aim of this study is to develop a technical basis for the simulation of fracture behavior of asphalt pavements. The cohesive zone model (CZM) approach was applied in the commercial FE software ABAQUS to analyze crack propagation in asphalt layers. The CZM developed from the asphalt mixtures in this study can be used to simulate the fracture behavior of pavements and further optimize both the structure and the materials. The investigations demonstrated that the remaining service life of asphalt pavements under cyclic load after the initial onset of macro-cracks can be predicted. The developed CZM can, therefore, usefully supplement conventional design methods by improving the accuracy of the predicted stress states and by increasing the quality, efficiency, and safety of mechanical design methods by using this more realistic modeling approach.

Composite sandwich structural joints, such as T-joints, are used in many different composite applications to transfers the load orthogonally between two sandwich elements. However, these joints connecting the sections can represent the weakest link in sandwich composite structures due to the lack of reinforcement in the out-of-plane direction. Therefore, this paper presents a new methodology for the design and analysis of composite sandwich T-joints using new biomimetic fabrication methods. The fabricated idea comes from biological fixed joints as an evolutionary alteration processes of trunk-branches of trees. It offers unique attributes to optimize the continuous fiber paths for minimum stress concentrations and multi-sandwich layers to increase the bending stiffness and strength. The focus is on how the biomimetic technique can improve sandwich T-joint structures by increasing their strength and load carrying capability without adding a significant weight penalty. The major attention is to investigate the comprehensive failure modes in the joint numerically and verified by experiments. Investigations were conducted on three different designs of biomimetic composite sandwich T-joints under tension and bending loads. The results show significant improvements to the ultimate load up to 68% in the case of bending load and 40% in the case of pull-off load in the biomimetic sandwich T-joints compared to the reference conventional T-joint design. The final failure was significantly deferred in both load status. The FE models provided important insights into the core failure and delamination of multi-interface biomimetic T-joints.
