The objective of the research outlined in this paper is to propose an eco-friendly solution that simultaneously contributes to improving the characteristics of polymer composites. The analyzed solution entails the use of recycled aggregate from crushed concrete rubble. The authors conducted experiments to test the consistency, density, flexural strength, compressive strength, and microstructure of polymer concrete (PC) with different proportions of recycled aggregate (RA). It was found that PC with RA had a higher compressive strength, 96 MPa, than PC with natural aggregate, 89.1 MPa, owing to the formation of a double-layer shell of resin and calcium filler on the surface of porous RA grains. Using a resin with a lower viscosity could improve the performance of PC with RA by filling the cracks and penetrating deeper into the pores. RA is a valuable material for PC production, especially when it contains porous grains with poor mechanical properties, which are otherwise unsuitable for other applications. With diminishing natural aggregate resources and increasing environmental protection efforts, the use of recycled fine aggregate is a more sustainable approach, although challenges persist in achieving comparable mechanical properties. Exploration into the incorporation of steel fibers with recycled aggregate has led to the development of steel-fiber-reinforced recycled aggregate concrete. This study investigates the shrinkage performance and compressive constitutive relationship of steel fiber recycled concrete with different steel fibers and recycled aggregate dosages. Initially, based on different replacement rates of recycled coarse aggregate and different volume contents of steel fiber, experimental results demonstrate that as the replacement rate of recycled coarse aggregate increases, shrinkage also increases, while the addition of steel fiber can mitigate this effect. An empirical shrinkage model for steel fiber recycled concrete under natural curing conditions is also proposed. Subsequently, based on the uniaxial compression test, findings indicate that with an increasing replacement rate of recycled fine aggregate, the peak stress and elastic modulus of concrete decrease, accompanied by an increase in peak strain, and the addition of steel fiber limits concrete crack development and enhances its brittleness while the peak stress and strain of recycled fine aggregate concrete are enhanced. However, the steel fiber volume percentage has a negligible effect on the elastic modulus. A constitutive relationship for concrete considering the effects of recycled fine aggregate and steel fiber is also proposed. This finding provides foundational support for the influence patterns of steel fiber dosage and recycled aggregate ratio on the mechanical properties of steel fiber recycled concrete. The literature shows that a circular economy can benefit some sectors such as the construction industry. This sector demands huge amounts of raw materials and produces waste when buildings and structures are demolished. This paper explores the possibility of manufacturing at industrial scale paving blocks using different types of construction and demolition wastes as aggregates, without modifying the commonly used industrial conditions. A total of four different recycled aggregates were used in this research. Both natural and recycled aggregates have been characterized. The dosages were optimized (three different formulations). Prefabricated tests have been carried out on the products manufactured in industrial plants and the evolution of mechanical properties over time has been analysed. The results obtained were analysed statistically by applying the principal component analysis (PCA) method. To ensure the security of the elements manufactured, the ionic leaching of the materials used as recycled aggregate and of the elements produced has been tested. The main implications of this research on the construction industry show that the majority of recycled aggregates used could replace 25% of the natural aggregate in manufactured precast concrete, that the properties of the aggregates should be taken into account in the different standards and that all paving blocks manufactured in this study can be considered environmentally safe (no risk of leaching) according to the Netherland Soil Quality Decree. Therefore, it is evident that it is possible to manufacture on an industrial scale paving blocks with mixed recycled aggregates, concrete and ceramic in nature, both with the fine and coarse fractions that meet the requirements of its reference standard UNE-EN 1338 and the Netherland Soil Quality Decree that evaluates environmental risks due to leaching. In road engineering, road construction requires a large amount of natural aggregate; its substitution with recycled construction-solid-waste aggregate not only saves resources but also reduces the burden on the environment. The main components of construction solid waste are concrete blocks and brick slag; the breakability of the latter can affect the performance of mixed recycled aggregate, which hinders the use of construction solid waste in road engineering applications. To analyze the applicability of recycled construction-solid-waste aggregate containing brick slag aggregate in the subgrade layer, the effect of brick aggregate content on the CBR (California bearing ratio) and crushing value of mixed recycled aggregates was evaluated based on laboratory tests, and the field compaction quality of the recycled aggregates was analyzed. The results show that the 9.5–19 mm mixed recycled aggregate samples were crushed to a higher degree during the compaction process. A brick aggregate content less than 40% had little effect on the performance of mixed recycled construction-solid-waste aggregate. It is recommended to use a 22 t road roller for five passes (two weak vibrations + two strong vibrations + one weak vibration) at a speed of 3 km/h in the main compaction stage of the subgrade filling. This paper explores the new potential strategy of using fine recycled aggregates (fRA) derived from waste 3D printed concrete (3DPC) as a substitute for cement in additive manufacturing. This study hypothesizes that fRA can optimize mixture design, reduce cement content, and contribute to sustainable construction practices. Experimental programs were conducted to evaluate the fresh and hardened properties, printability window, and buildability of 3DPC mixes containing fRA. Mixes with replacement rates of cement with fRA by 10 vol%, 20 vol%, 30 vol%, 40 vol%, and 50 vol% were produced. A comprehensive experimental protocol consisting of rheological studies (static and dynamic yield stress), dynamic elastic modulus determination (first 24 h of hydration), flexural and compressive strengths (2 d and 28 d), and an open porosity test was performed. The obtained results were verified by printing tests. In addition, an economic and environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) of the mixes was performed. The results indicate that up to 50 vol% cement replacement with fRA is feasible, albeit with some technical drawbacks. While fRA incorporation enhances sustainability by reducing CO2 emissions and material costs, it adversely affects the printability window, green strength, setting time, and mechanical properties, particularly in the initial curing stages. Therefore, with higher replacement rates (above 20 vol%), potential optimization efforts are needed to mitigate drawbacks such as reduced green strength and buildability. Notably, replacement rates of up to 20 vol% can be successfully used without compromising the overall material properties or altering the mixture design. The LCA analysis shows that reducing the cement content and increasing the fRA addition results in a significant reduction in mix cost (up to 24%) and a substantial decrease in equivalent CO2 emissions (up to 48%). The reasonable and effective application of waste tires and discarded concrete in concrete is an important branch of green concrete development. This paper investigates the effects of the inorganic modification mode on the basic mechanical properties of rubber recycled concrete based on indoor tests. Inorganic modification, such as water washing, acid washing, and alkaline washing modification, was mainly used to treat and modify rubber particles. The factors affecting the compressive strength, the splitting tensile strength, the flexural strength, the axial compressive strength, and the modulus of elasticity of modified rubber recycled concrete were analyzed. The study results show that the incorporation of recycled aggregates and rubber reduced the mechanical properties of concrete, with the compressive and splitting tensile strengths showing the greatest reductions of 27.36% and 27.24%, respectively. Three modification methods significantly improved the mechanical properties of rubber recycled concrete. The alkali washing modification method was the most effective, maximally improving the mechanical properties of rubber recycled concrete by 7.53–15.51%. The effects of the three modifications on the mechanical properties of concrete were ranked as follows: alkali washing > acid washing > water washing. The purpose of this study is to investigate the macro and micro properties of stabilized recycled aggregate base layers using gypsum slag cement (GSC) and compare them with ordinary Portland cement (OPC). To achieve this, four levels of recycled aggregate content (0%, 50%, 60%, 70%) and three levels of binder materials (3.5%, 4.5%, 5.5%) were designed, where the binding materials included OPC and GSC. When GSC is used as the binding material with 0% recycled content, two scenarios for the ratio of slag to activator are considered: 4:1 and 4:2. For recycled content of 50%, 60%, and 70%, only the 4:1 ratio is considered. The macro-mechanical properties of the composite material were studied through compaction tests, unconfined compressive strength tests, and indirect tensile strength tests. Microscopic properties were investigated through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Macroscopic test results indicate that, at an equal binder content, GSC exhibits a higher moisture content and maximum dry density compared to OPC. Moreover, the unconfined compressive strength and indirect tensile strength of GSC are higher than those of OPC. Microscopic test results reveal that the hydration products of both binding materials are essentially similar; however, under identical curing conditions, the hydration products of GSC are more abundant than those of OPC. The differences in physical properties, chemical properties, and mechanical properties between reclaimed concrete aggregate and natural aggregate are discussed in this paper. In this paper, the commonly used improvement techniques of recycled concrete aggregate are reviewed. Physical modification involves peeling the attached mortar layer using mechanical and thermodynamic means, including mechanical grinding and shaping, heat treatment, and microwave or electric pulse treatment. Chemical modification is based on the chemical reaction of some materials with recycled aggregate attached mortar, including acid treatment removal, water glass strengthening, carbonation strengthening, inorganic slurry strengthening, and polymer strengthening. Microbial modification is mainly based on the metabolic activity of specific microorganisms that induce carbon deposition modification. The results show that the reinforced technology of recycled aggregate has made some progress in improving the performance of recycled aggregate, but there are still some problems, such as inconsistent strengthening effects and the unstable compatibility of composite materials. In this paper, future research directions, such as the development of new strengthening materials and the integration of multi-functional strengthening technology, are described in order to provide some theoretical support for the utilization of recycled concrete aggregate. Increasing construction and demolition waste (CDW) and the large amount of energy consumption in the building operation process are high-profile issues at present. In the construction industry, recycled aggregated (RA) from CDW can be reutilized in construction, along with green materials, for example, as a road base layer, as aggregate in concrete, etc. Phase change materials (PCM) are often used as building materials due to their good latent heat storage properties. With the use of RA as a matrix to absorb PCM, a thermal performance aggregate can be obtained. This work studied the physical properties of RA from Portugal and combined PCM with RA to prepare a green thermal aggregate through two methodologies using a vacuum and atmospheric pressure. The green aggregate was used in concrete to observe its effect on the compressive strength of concrete. The results showed that the amount of PCM absorbed by the RA mainly depends on the porosity of the matrix material. At the same time, the volume expansion coefficient of PCM was 2.7%, which was not enough to destroy the RA. Ultimately, as the amount of green thermal aggregate increases, the compressive strength of concrete decreases. This study provides the results of an experiment on the possibility of using high-volume ground granulated blast furnace slag (HVGGBFS)-based concrete as mass concrete. In addition to the control concrete, the total weight of the binder was 75% ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and 25% ordinary Portland cement (OPC). For the aggregates, both natural and recycled aggregates were used. Three specimens with dimensions of 800 mm × 800 mm × 800 mm were prepared to simulate mass concrete. The workability, temperature aging and strength of the mass concrete were tested. The test results showed that utilizing HVGGBFS concrete as mass concrete can significantly reduce the heat of hydration due to the low heat of hydration of GGBFS, while the heat of hydration of GGBFS and recycled aggregate combination is 11.2% higher than normal concrete, with a slump that is 31.3% lower than that of plain concrete. The results also showed that the use of recycled aggregates in HVGGBFS concrete can significantly reduce workability. However, the compressive strength is higher than when natural aggregates are used due to the alkali activation effect caused by the recycled aggregates. The aim of the study was to check the possibility of reusing aggregate from recycled concrete waste and rubber granules from car tires as partial substitution of natural aggregate. The main objective was to investigate the effects of recycled waste aggregate modified with polymer fibers on the compressive and flexural strength, modulus of elasticity and permeability of pervious concrete. Fibers with a multifilament structure and length of 54 mm were deliberately used to strengthen the joints among grains (max size 31.5 mm). Eight batches of designed mixes were used in the production of pervious concrete at fixed water/binder ratio of 0.34 with cement content of 350 kg/m3. Results showed that the use of recycled concrete aggregate (8/31.5 mm) with replacement ratio of 50% (by weight of aggregate) improved the mechanical properties of pervious concrete in all analyzed cases. Whereas the replacement of 10% rubber waste aggregate (2/5 mm) by volume of aggregate reduced the compressive strength by a maximum of 11.4%. Addition of 2 kg/m3 of polymer fibers proved the strengthening effect of concrete structure, enhancing the compressive and tensile strengths by a maximum of 23.4% and 25.0%, respectively. The obtained test results demonstrate the possibility of using the recycled waste aggregates in decarbonization process of pervious concrete production, but further laboratory and field performance tests are needed. The water–cement ratio (w/c) has a significant effect on the strength of recycled concrete. In this study, considering the effects of water/cement ratio, strength, and water content of recycled aggregates, two kinds of pulse sequences of low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) were applied to investigate the water migration behavior between simulated recycled aggregates (SRA) and water or fresh mortar. Three sets of concrete strength tests were designed and the results were used to verify the findings of LF-NMR imaging tests. The results showed that the depth of water migration in the SRA increases with time: at first the change rate is rapid, then slows down, and eventually tends to remain stable. When the SRA is in contact with fresh mortar with low w/c, no water migration occurs because the hydration of the cement in the mixture consumes a large amount of water, resulting in the inability of water to migrate into the SRA through capillary pressure. The utilization of recycled aggregate can avert the squandering of resources and the destruction of the environment. Nevertheless, there exists a slew of old cement mortar and microcracks on the surface of recycled aggregate, which give rise to the poor performance of aggregates in concrete. In this study, for the sake of ameliorating this property of recycled aggregates, the surface of the recycled aggregates is covered with a layer of cement mortar to compensate for the microcracks on the surface and reinforce the bond between old cement mortar and aggregates. In order to demonstrate the influence of recycled aggregate by different cement mortar pretreatment methods, this study prepared natural aggregate concrete (NAC) and concretes with recycled aggregate after the wetting pretreatment (RAC-W) and cement mortar pretreatment (RAC-C), and conducted uniaxial compressive strength tests on different types of concrete at different curing ages. The test results indicated that the compressive strength of RAC-C at a 7 d curing age was higher than that of RAC-W and NAC, and the compressive strength of RAC-C at a 28 d curing age was higher than RAC-W but lower than NAC. The compressive strength of NAC and RAC-W at a 7 d curing age was about 70% of that at a 28 d curing age, and the compressive strength of RAC-C at a 7 d curing age was about 85–90% of that at a 28 d curing age. The compressive strength of RAC-C increased dramatically at the early stage, while the post-strength of the NAC and RAC-W groups increased rapidly. The fracture surface of RAC-W mainly occurred in the transition zone between the recycled aggregates and old cement mortar under the pressure of the uniaxial compressive load. However, the main failure of RAC-C was the crushing destruction of cement mortar. With changes in the amount of cement added beforehand, the proportion of aggregate damage and A-P interface damage of RAC-C also changed accordingly. Therefore, the recycled aggregate pretreated with cement mortar can significantly improve the compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete. Attached, old mortar removal methods are evolving to improve recycled aggregate quality. Despite the improved quality of recycled aggregate, treatment of recycled aggregate at the required level cannot be obtained and predicted well. In the present study, an analytical approach was developed and proposed to use the Ball Mill Method smartly. As a result, more interesting and unique results were found. One of the interesting results was the abrasion coefficient which was composed according to experimental test results; and the Abrasion Coefficient enables quick decision-making to get the best results for recycled aggregate before the Ball mill method application on recycled aggregate. The proposed approach provided an adjustment in water absorption of recycled aggregate, and the required reduction level in water absorption of recycled aggregate was easily achieved by accurately composing Ball Mill Method combinations (drum rotation-steel ball). In addition, artificial neural network models were built for the Ball Mill Method The artificial neural network input parameters were Ball Mill Method drum rotations, steel ball numbers and/or Abrasion Coefficient, and the output parameter was the water absorption of recycled aggregate. Training and testing processes were conducted using the Ball Mill Method results, and the results were compared with test data. Eventually, the developed approach gave the Ball Mill Method more ability and more effectiveness. Also, the predicted results of the proposed Abrasion Coefficient were found close to the experimental and literature data. Construction and demolition waste (CDW) from earthquake rubbles was used here as recycled aggregates (RA) in cementitious binders. The materials were sorted in six groups: concrete (CO), natural stone (NS), tile (TI), brick (BR), perforated brick (PF) and roof tile (RT). The abundance (wt.%) of crystalline phases in each RA type was determined by X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD). Each group of RAs was used alone (100 wt.% of RA) and mixed with quartz-rich virgin aggregates (VA) to prepare 13 types of mortars (12 specimens per type): one reference mortar (RM) with only VA, six recycled aggregate mortars (RAM) and six recycled-plus-virgin aggregate mortars (RVAM). The physical and mechanical properties of aggregates and mortars reflect the type and abundance of crystalline phases in each CDW group. Recycled mortars rich in concrete, natural stones and tiles have better mechanical performance than mortars prepared with recycled bricks, perforated bricks and roof tiles. For each RA, RVAMs have superior mechanical characteristics than the corresponding RAM. Since the type and amount of phases contained in recycled aggregates strongly control the mechanical performance of new construction materials, they should be routinely quantified as reported here, in addition to other physical features (water absorption, density, etc.). The separation of heterogeneous CDW into homogeneous RA groups is necessary for the production of new construction materials with stable and predictable performances to ensure CDW recycling, especially in areas hit by major adverse events, where large amounts of still valuable materials could be used for reconstruction processes. The utilization of recycled materials is an important issue in the context of environmental protection. The large amounts of recycled material recovered from the demolition of asphalt road structures indicate the need to find new ways of utilizing them. In the case of road renovation projects, large amounts of recycled materials are, in most cases, recovered in the form of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), reclaimed concrete (RC) and recycled aggregate (RA). To focus on the effects of the use of recovered materials (RAP, RC and RA), the same composition was used for all of the analyzed mixtures in terms of foamed bitumen (FB) and Portland cement (CEM) content. The scope of laboratory tests included the specification of the following parameters: the amount of air void content Vm, the determination of axial compression strength at +25 °C, indirect tensile strength (ITS) at +25 °C, water resistance, TSR, water and frost resistance, WRW+M stiffness modulus (IT-CY) at 13 °C, dynamic dynamicmodulus. The plan of the experiment assumed addition recycled material in quantities between 20% and 80% in increments of 20%. The obtained results indicate that both the type and quantity of recycled material significantly affect the properties of the cold-recycled mixture with foamed bitumen. Using reclaimed asphalt pavement and recycled cement concrete guarantees high levels of stiffness in the recycled mixture. Howeverin the case of recycled aggregate, the authors did not observe any visible changes in the dynamicdynamic modulus, irrespective of the loading conditions. Concrete is classified as a multi-composite material comprising three phases: coarse aggregate, mortar, and interfacial transition zone (ITZ). Fine and coarse aggregates occupy approximately 70–85% by volume, of which coarse aggregate typically constitutes more than two-thirds of the total quantity of aggregate by volume. The current study investigates the concrete performance produced using various recycled construction and by-product industrial waste coarse aggregates. Six types of coarse aggregates: manufactured limestone, quartzite, natural scoria, by-product industrial waste aggregate, and two sources of recycled concrete aggregates with densities ranging from 860 to 2300 kg/m3 and with different strength properties were studied. To determine the coarse aggregate contribution to the overall concrete performance, lean and rich concrete mixtures (Mix 1 and Mix 2) were used. Mix 1 (lean mixture) consisted of a ratio of water to cement (w/c) of 0.5 and cement content of 300 kg/m3, whereas a higher quantity of cement of 500 kg/m3 and a lower w/c ratio of 0.3 were used for Mix 2 (rich mixture). The results showed that while the compressive strength for different aggregate types in Mix 1 was comparable, the contribution of aggregate to concrete performance was very significant for Mix 2. Heavyweight aggregate produced the highest strength, while the lightweight and recycled aggregates resulted in lower mechanical properties compared to normal weight aggregates. The modulus of elasticity was also substantially affected by the coarse aggregate characteristics and even for Mix 1. The ACI 363R-92 and CSA A23.3-04 appeared to have the best model for predicting the modulus of elasticity, followed by the ACI-318-19 (density-based formula) and AS-3600-09. The density of coarse aggregate, and hence concrete, greatly influenced the mechanical properties of concrete. The water absorption percentage for the concrete produced from various types of aggregates was found to be higher for the aggregates of higher absorption capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Geopolymer cement (GPC) is a sustainable alternative to ordinary Portland cement (OPC) that considerably cuts the emission of carbon dioxide linked to the building of concrete structures. Over the last few decades, while a large number of papers have been written concerning the use of GPC with natural aggregates and OPC with recycled aggregates, few papers have been devoted to investigating the use of Geopolymer Recycled Aggregate Concrete (GRAC) in structural members. Most of them show more interest in the mechanical strength of the material, rather than the structural behavior of RC members. This review critically compiles the present and past research on the behavior of structural members cast with different types and compositions of GRAC. The focus is on the few research studies investigating the structural behavior of GRAC elements, with an analysis of the load-bearing capacity, the load-deflection mechanism, shear behavior, tensile and flexural strength, and ductility of GRAC structural members. The increasing volume of waste and the requirements of sustainable development are the reasons for the research on new waste management concepts. The research results presented in this paper show the effect of recycled aggregate on the selected properties of cement concrete. The aggregates obtained from three types of wastes are tested: recycled concrete paving, crushed ceramic bricks, and burnt sewage sludges. The recycled aggregates replaced 25% and 50% of the volume of the fine aggregate. The tested aggregates worsen the concrete mixes' consistency and decrease, to some extent, the compressive strength of the concrete. However, the tensile splitting strength of the concrete with recycled aggregates is similar to that of the reference concrete. Using recycled aggregates worsens the tightness of the concrete, which manifests itself by increasing water penetration depth. The thermal properties of concrete are slightly affected by the type and content of the recycled aggregate. Considering the expected improvement in recycled aggregate processing, they can be an alternative to natural aggregates. Wasted concrete was often used as a recycled aggregate instead natural stone in fresh concrete to reduce the environmental impact in a decade. However, because of the residual mortar interface, the performance of recycled aggregate was weaker. In this paper, the recycled aggregate was prewetted, and the effects of prewetted degree on the workability, strength, and durability of concrete were studied. The properties of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ), including microhardness, pore structure, and width, were also investigated. The results show that the workability intensity increased with the increase in prewetted degree from 0% to 100%, while the strength was first increased and then decreased with the optimal value of 43.3 MPa when the prewetted degree was 50–65%. The water absorption and chloride ion diffusion coefficient were also decreased by approximately 10% at minimum with the prewetted degree around 55% because of the declined fraction of pores larger than 50 μm and smaller porosity. The width of ITZ was first sharply decreased with a prewetted degree of 50–65%, then increased again with higher moisture, while microhardness of the ITZ showed the opposite trend and reached 82.7 MPa at maximum, at 50%. The appropriate moisture (50–65%) improved the pore structure and hydration products with an internal curing effect. When the moisture content was too high, the excess water was released from aggregate to the matrix, causing a higher water–cement ratio at ITZ; the porosity and the number of macrospores were increased to weaken the performance of concrete. In order to study the workability and mechanical performance of high fluidity recycled concrete, parallel tests were carried out to prepare high fluidity recycled concrete by changing the amount of recycled aggregate (20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60%) and the sand ratio (0.37, 0.38, 0.39 and 0.40). The fluidity, compression strength, tensile strength and flexural strength of each mix were tested. The results show that the slump of a recycled concrete mixture is 120 mm when the content of recycled aggregate is less than 30%, and the mechanical strength satisfies the requirement of the high fluidity ordinary concrete. As the ratio of sand increases, the fluidity of the recycled concrete also improved. The best sand ratio is not consistent with the strength index. When the sand ratio is between 0.37 and 0.40 and the content of recycled aggregate is not more than 40%, the concrete of C60 can be prepared. This study investigated recycled aggregates of Jeju Island—where porous basalt exists as a natural aggregate—and is a study aimed at verifying the applicability of the basalt-based recycled aggregate in the field. To this end, the application properties of concrete were analyzed using the quality improvement of the recycled aggregate (PRA), the type of fine aggregate received in the region, and the cement content as variables. In an experiment using concrete in which 50% of the PRA was replaced with basalt (BA), the air content of the fresh concrete decreased due to the increasing solid content of the aggregate when PRA and fine aggregates (with an even particle size distribution) were used. Regarding the properties of the hardened concrete, when the PRA and fine aggregate (with a high fineness modulus) were used, the compressive strength was 33.6 MPa and the modulus of elasticity was 23.1 GPa, which are higher than those of the BA specimen. The resistance to carbonation increased due to the improved quality of the PRA specimen. Pores that are 0.3 mm in size or larger decreased when the PRA and fine aggregates of even particle sizes were used. Brick waste makes up a significant part of the solid waste that is generated from building demolition globally. The disposal of this waste consumes land, causes environmental pollution, and is a waste of resources. In order to use this construction waste and increase its functionality, two types of stable-shape PEG-400/SiO2 composite shaped PCM and Tet/SiO2 composite shaped PCM were studied and added to recycled aggregate pavement bricks, and two new types of composite shaped PCM recycled aggregate pavement bricks were created. SEM, DSC, TGA, and other test methods found the two PCMs to be successfully adsorbed by SiO2, and the setting effect of PEG-400/SiO2 was found to be better than that of Tet/SiO2. The physicochemical properties of both composite shaped PCMs remained stable within the TGA test temperature range. The prepared PCM was added to the recycled aggregate pavement brick. A comprehensive analysis of the properties of the composite shaped PCM recycled orthopedic pavement brick found the compressive strength and flexural strength of Tet/SiO2 PCM recycled aggregate pavement brick to be significantly higher than those of PEG-400/SiO2 PCM recycled aggregate pavement brick. With a recycled aggregate content of 60% and a compound shaped PCM content of 5%, the 28-day strength of the recycled aggregate pavement brick was found to be higher than that of the recycled aggregate pavement brick with a recycled aggregate content of 70% and a compound shaped PCM content of 10%. This study provides reference for the optimization and upgrading of the thermal storage performance of composite shaped PCM in practical applications, and is of great significance for promoting thermal energy storage development and expanding its application range. Construction and demolition activities consume large amounts of natural resources, generating 4.5 bi tons of solid waste/year, called construction and demolition waste (C&DW) and other wastes, such as ceramic, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), glass, and slag. Furthermore, around 32 bi tons of natural aggregate (NA) are extracted annually. In this scenario, replacing NA with recycled aggregate (RA) from C&DW and other wastes can mitigate environmental problems. We review the use of RA for concrete production and draw the main challenges and outlook. RA reduces concrete's fresh and hardened performance compared to NA, but these reductions are often negligible when the replacement levels are kept up to 30%. Furthermore, we point out efficient strategies to mitigate these performance reductions. Urban construction has produced a large amount of construction waste which has caused huge environmental problems. The sponge city is the development direction of urban construction, and permeable pavement concrete is an important material for sponge city construction. To see the law influencing different factors on the performance of recycled aggregate permeable pavement concrete, different water binder ratios, recycled aggregate particle gradations, ordinary aggregate substitution rates, and fly ash and admixture contents are designed to prepare permeable concrete. The compressive strength, permeability coefficient, frost resistance, and pore structure of permeable concrete are tested. The results show that when the replacement rate of recycled aggregate is 50%, the 28-d strength of concrete with a 0.25 water binder ratio can reach 28.9 MPa, and the permeability coefficient is 13.26 mm/s. The addition of fly ash will reduce the compressive strength, and the permeability coefficient increases first and then decreases with the increase of the fly ash content. When the mass fraction of fly ash instead of cement is 12%, the 28-d strength is 94.8% of that of the cement group, and the permeability coefficient can reach 14.03 mm/s. A water-reducing agent can obviously improve the workability of permeable concrete; the best content of the water-reducing agent is 0.2% of the cement mass. A reasonable amount of fly ash and water-reducing agent can optimize the number of harmless holes and less harmful holes in the concrete to improve the frost resistance and strength after the freeze–thaw, and the frost resistance is F150. To replace porous basalt, the mechanical properties of concrete with recycled resources and durability improvement were analyzed in this study. The analysis was based on the quality improvement of recycled aggregate, use of fly ash, and changes in curing conditions. Basalt aggregate (BA) with a 3% water absorption, raw recycled aggregate and basalt (RRA), and improved recycled aggregate and basalt (PRA) were the main experimental variables. As PRA was applied to concrete, the compressive strength was lower than that of the specimen comprising BA in the normal strength region, but the modulus of elasticity (22.9 GPa) was equivalent or higher. The initial drying shrinkage increased because of the use of basalt-based recycled aggregate (B-RA). The drying shrinkage of PRA was similar to that of BA with an average difference of <7% as the age increased. The specimens subjected to steam curing exhibited the lowest drying shrinkage. These results showed that pores in the old paste of recycled aggregate increased freeze–thaw resistance because of the increase in the spacing factor. Although the PRA did not satisfy the quality criteria, the efficient use of recycled aggregate achieved an equivalent or higher performance than that of concrete comprising BA and improved durability. Sustainable concrete is gaining in popularity as a result of research into waste materials, such as recycled aggregate (RA). This strategy not only protects the environment, but also meets the demand for concrete materials. Using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) approaches, this study anticipates the split tensile strength (STS) of concrete samples incorporating RA. Three machine-learning techniques, artificial neural network (ANN), decision tree (DT), and random forest (RF), were examined for the specified database. The results suggest that the RF model shows high precision compared with the DT and ANN models at predicting the STS of RA-based concrete. The high value of the coefficient of determination and the low error values of the mean absolute error (MAE), mean square error (MSE), and root mean square error (RMSE) provided significant evidence for the accuracy and precision of the RF model. Furthermore, statistical tests and the k-fold cross-validation technique were used to validate the models. In this paper, the issue of self-compacting concrete (SCC) with the addition of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycled aggregate is addressed. The PET utilized was a waste fraction in the PET-bottle-recycling process. The implementation of waste in concrete mixes has a positive impact on their environmental and social profile; however, technical requirements are not necessarily met. In this investigation, PET was used as a substitute for fine aggregate in quantities ranging from 0 to 20% in increments of 5%. Both the flow properties of SCC mixes and the hardened SCC properties (compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and Poisson ratio) were investigated. Additionally, non-destructive tests (ultrasound and sclerometric) were performed to determine the correlation curves. The research revealed that both the flow properties and the parameters of the hardened concrete deteriorated with the PET content. Concrete with 20% PET replacement did not meet the self-compacting requirements and its compressive strength decreased by almost 50%. However, it was noted that replacing fine aggregate with PET aggregate in the amount of 5% did not significantly alter the concrete parameters and could be an attractive alternative to traditional concretes. Based on non-destructive testing, correlation curves were constructed that could be applicable to the future quality assessment of self-compacting concretes with recycled PET aggregate. The research focuses on the use of recycled aggregate (RA), from waste pieces generated during production in precast plants for self-compacting concrete (SCC) manufactured with a double sustainable goal: recycle manufacturing waste (consumption) and improvement of the thermal properties of the manufactured product (energy efficiency). For this purpose, a mechanical study to ensure technical feasibility of the concrete obtained has been conducted, as well as a thermal analysis of recycled SCC specimens of 50 N/mm² resistance, with different RA doses (0%, 20%, 50% and 100%). The main parameters that characterize a SCC in both states, fresh (slump-flow) and hard (compressive strength), have been tested; also, a qualitative analysis of the thermal conductivity using infrared thermography (IRT) and quantitative analysis with heat flow meter at three temperatures 20 °C, 25 °C and 30 °C have been performed. The results suggest the existence of two different thermal behaviors: concretes with 0% and 20% of RA, and on the other hand concretes with 50% and 100% of RA. The practical use of recycled concrete aggregate produced by crushing concrete waste reduces the consumption of natural aggregate and the amount of concrete waste that ends up in landfills. This study investigated two methods used in the production of fine recycled concrete aggregate: (1) a method that produces fine as well as coarse aggregate, and (2) a method that produces only fine aggregate. Mortar specimens were tested using a variety of mix proportions to determine how the characteristics of fine recycled concrete aggregate affect the physical and mechanical properties of the resulting mortars. Our results demonstrate the superiority of mortar produced using aggregate produced using the second of the two methods. Nonetheless, far more energy is required to render concrete into fine aggregate than is required to produce coarse as well as fine aggregate simultaneously. The main strategy to reduce the environmental impact of the concrete industry is to reuse the waste materials. This research has considered the combination of cement replacement by industrial by-products, and natural coarse aggregate substitution by recycled aggregate. The aim is to evaluate the behavior of concretes with a reduced impact on the environment by replacing a 50% of cement by industrial by-products (15% of spent fluid catalytic cracking catalyst and 35% of fly ash) and a 100% of natural coarse aggregate by recycled aggregate. The concretes prepared according to these considerations have been tested in terms of mechanical strengths and the protection offered against steel reinforcement corrosion under carbonation attack and chloride-contaminated environments. The proposed concrete combinations reduced the mechanical performance of concretes in terms of elastic modulus, compressive strength, and flexural strength. In addition, an increase in open porosity due to the presence of recycled aggregate was observed, which is coherent with the changes observed in mechanical tests. Regarding corrosion tests, no significant differences were observed in the case of the resistance of these types of concretes under a natural chloride attack. In the case of carbonation attack, although all concretes did not stand the highly aggressive conditions, those concretes with cement replacement behaved worse than Portland cement concretes. It appears that the awareness and intentions to use recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) in concrete are expanding over the globe. The production of self-compacting concrete (SCC) using RCA is an emerging field in the construction sector. However, the highly porous and absorptive nature of adhered mortar on RCA's surface leads to reduced concrete strength, which can be removed with the application of various techniques, such as acid treatment. This study investigated the effect of the partial replacement of silica fume by cement and natural aggregate (NA) by RCA with and without steel fibre. The used RCA was treated with magnesium sulphate solution. It was immersed in solutions with different concentrations of 10%, 15% and 20% and for different periods of 5, 10 and 15 days. Sixteen mixes were prepared, which were divided into six groups with or without 1% of steel fibre content. The fresh properties, compressive strength, split tensile strength and impact resistance were examined. The results revealed that the strengths of the mixes with 20% RCA were marginally better than those of the control mixes. This study determines the effect of spent garnet as a replacement for natural sand in 3D-printed mortar at early ages. Five mixes with different spent garnet amounts were prepared (0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% by volume). The ratio of binder to aggregate remained unchanged. In all mixes the water/binder ratio was assumed as a constant value of 0.375. Tests were performed to confirm the printability of the mix (a path quality test using a gantry robot with an extruder). Determinations of key buildability properties of the mix (green strength and Young's Modulus) during uniaxial compressive strength at 15 min, 30 min and 45 min after adding water were conducted. A hydraulic press and the GOM ARAMIS precision image analysis system were used to conduct the study. The results showed that an increase in spent garnet content caused a decrease in green strength and Young's Modulus (up to 69.91% and 80.37%, respectively). It was found that to maintain proper buildability, the recommended maximum replacement rate of natural sand with garnet is 50%. Construction is among the leading industries/activities contributing the largest carbon footprint. This review paper aims to promote awareness of the sources of carbon footprint in the construction industry, from design to operation and management during manufacturing, transportation, construction, operations, maintenance and management, and end-of-life deconstruction phases. In addition, it summarizes the latest studies on carbon footprint reduction strategies in different phases of construction by the use of alternative additives in building materials, improvements in design, recycling construction waste, promoting the utility of alternative water resources, and increasing efficiencies of water technologies and other building systems. It was reported that the application of alternative additives/materials or techniques/systems can reduce up to 90% of CO2 emissions at different stages in the construction and building operations. Therefore, this review can be beneficial at the stage of conceptualization, design, and construction to assist clients and stakeholders in selecting materials and systems; consequently, it promotes consciousness of the environmental impacts of fabrication, transportation, and operation. Recycled aggregate is essential to protect Jeju Island's natural environment, but waste concrete, including porous basalt, is a factor that lowers the quality of recycled aggregate. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to analyze the properties of concrete application of basalt-based recycled aggregate (B-RA) through quality improvement. The absorption of the B-RA ranged from 3–5%; restricting its absorption to less than 3% was challenging owing to its porosity and irregular shape. However, the increase in the solid volume percentage of the concrete when replacing 25 or 50% of fresh basalt aggregate with recycled basalt aggregate improved the mechanical performance of the concrete, especially at 25%, for which a compressive strength of 55.9 MPa and modulus of elasticity of 25.9 GPa exceeded those of concrete with fresh basalt aggregate. Moreover, increasing the replacement ratio of the fresh basalt with recycled aggregate reduced the slump and decreased the air content, consequently increasing the concrete drying shrinkage. However, the replacement of fresh basalt aggregate with recycled basalt aggregate unaltered the mechanical performance of the concrete. As the first batch of products after the resource utilization of construction and demolition waste, low-grade recycled aggregate (RA) has not been fully utilized, which hinders the development of the comprehensive recycling industry of construction waste. Therefore, this paper studies the mechanical properties of porous concrete (POC) with low-grade RA. An improved relationship between porosity and compressive strength of brittle, porous materials is used to express the compressive strength of POC with recycled aggregate (RPOC), and the prediction for compressive strength of porous concrete with low-grade RA is constructed by analyzing the mechanism of compressive damage. The results show: the compressive strength of porous concrete decreases with the addition of low-grade recycled aggregate, but the effect is not obvious when the replacement rate is less than 25%. The error range of the relationship between porosity and compressive strength of RPOC is basically within 15% after improvement. The prediction model for compressive strength based on the ideal sphere model of aggregate can accurately reflect the compressive strength of porous concrete with low-grade RA. The results of this study can provide a reference for the staff to learn about the functional characteristics of recycled products in advance and provide security for the actual project. The lack of usable aggregates for civil construction in Rio Branco (capital of Acre, a Federal State in the Amazon region) makes the production and use of recycled aggregates from construction and demolition waste (CDW) an alternative of great interest. In this study, a comprehensive characterization of CDW collected from 24 construction sites of six building types and three different construction phases (structures, masonry, and finishing) was carried out. The fine and coarse recycled aggregates were produced and evaluated in 10 different compositions. The aggregates' performance was evaluated in four mixtures designed for laying and coating mortars with a total replacement of conventional aggregates and a mixture designed for a C25 concrete with 50% and 100% replacement of conventional aggregates. CDW mortars showed lower densities and greater water retention, initial adhesion, and mechanical strength than conventional mortars. CDW concretes presented lower densities and greater resistance to chloride penetration than conventional concrete, with a small mechanical strength reduction. The recycled CDW aggregates proved to be technologically feasible for safe application in mortars and concrete; for this reason, it is believed that the alternative and proposed methodology is of great interest to the Amazonian construction industry, considering the high costs of raw materials and the need for defining and consolidating a sustainable development model for the Amazon region. This study investigates the feasibility of collaborative use of recycled carbon fiber reinforced polymer (RCFRP) fibers and recycled aggregate (RA) in concrete, which is called RCFRP fiber reinforced RA concrete (RFRAC). The mechanical properties of the composite were studied through experimental investigation, considering different RCFRP fiber contents (0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% by volume) and different RA replacement rates (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% by volume). Specifically, ten different mixes were designed to explore the flowability and compressive and flexural strengths of the proposed composite. Experimental results indicated that the addition of RCFRP fibers and RA had a relatively small influence on the compressive strength of concrete (less than 5%). Moreover, the addition of RA slightly decreased the flexural strength of concrete, while the addition of RCFRP fibers could significantly improve the flexural performance. For example, the flexural strength of RA concrete with 1.5% RCFRP fiber addition increased by 32.7%. Considering the good flexural properties of the composite and its potential in reducing waste CFRP and construction solid waste, the proposed RFRAC is promising for use in civil concrete structures with high flexural performance requirements. In this paper, shear strength of fiber reinforced recycled concrete was investigated. A Self Consolidated Concrete (SCC) matrix with 100% coarse recycled aggregate and different types of fibers were used in the study. Steel (3D and 5D), synthetic and hybrid fibers with a volume fraction of 0.75% were added to the concrete matrix to prepare eight beams. In addition, two beams were cast without fibers as control specimens. All beams were prepared without shear reinforcement and were tested to evaluate concrete contribution to the shear capacity. In addition, optical images were captured to allow for full-field displacement measurements using Digital Image Correlation (DIC). The results showed about 23.44–64.48% improvement in the average concrete shear capacity for fiber-reinforced beams when compared to that of the control specimens. The percentage improvement was affected by fiber type and the steel fiber beams achieved the best performance. The addition of the fiber delayed the crack initiation and improved the post-cracking and ductile behavior of all beams. Portland cement concrete is fragile in tension and it has numerous negative impacts on the environment. To deal with these issues, both fiber reinforcement and recycled materials can be utilized to manufacture sustainable and ductile concrete. In this study, the synergistic effects of high-performance mineral admixture silica fume and glass fiber reinforcement were investigated on the hardened properties of RC. For this purpose, two concrete mix families, namely, NC and RC were prepared. To understand the benefits of synergistic utilization of glass fiber and silica fume, in both NC and RC, 0.5% glass fiber was incorporated with three different levels of silica fume. i.e., 0%, 5%, and 10%. Both strength and permeability-related durability properties were investigated. Results revealed that combined incorporation of 0.5% fiber and 10% silica fume can help in the production of RC having better mechanical and durability performance compared to reference "NC". Simultaneous incorporation of silica fume and glass fiber produces a combined effect greater than their individual effects on both mechanical and permeability properties of concrete. Silica fume plays a very dominant and positive role in the development of CS, WA, and CIPR of RC, whereas glass fiber plays a vital role in upgrading STS and FS of RC and whereas, with the addition of 0.5% glass fiber, RC can yield 8–9 times higher flexural toughness than that of the plain NC. Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is one of the major degradation causes of concrete. This highly deleterious reaction has aroused the attention of researchers, in order to develop methodologies for its prevention and mitigation, but despite the efforts made, there is still no efficient cure to control its expansive consequences. The incorporation of recycled aggregates in concrete raises several ASR issues, mainly due to the difficult control of the source concrete reactivity level and the lack of knowledge on ASR's evolution in new recycled aggregate concrete. This paper reviews several research works on ASR in concrete with recycled aggregates, and the main findings are presented in order to contribute to the knowledge and discussion of ASR in recycled aggregate concrete. It has been observed that age, exposure conditions, crushing and the heterogeneity source can influence the alkalis and reactive silica contents in the recycled aggregates. The use of low contents of highly reactive recycled aggregates as a replacement for natural aggregates can be done without an increase in expansion of concrete. Previous literature indicates a decrease in the mechanical properties of various concrete types that contain recycled aggregates (RA), due to their porosity and to their interface of transition zone (ITZ). However, other components of the RA concrete microstructure have not yet been explored, such as the modification of the new paste (NP) with respect to a reference concrete. This paper deals with the microstructure of the new paste of self-compacting concrete (SCC) for different levels of RA. The water to binder ratio (w/b) was kept constant for all concrete mixtures, and equal to 0.5. The SCC mixtures were prepared with percentages of coarse RA of 0%, 30%, 50% and 100%. Mercury intrusion porosimetry test (MIP) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations were conducted on the new paste of each concrete. The results indicated that the porosity of the new paste presents a significant variation for replacement percentages of 50% and 100% with respect to NP0 and NP30. However, RA contributed to the refinement of the pore structure of the new paste. The amount of macrospores the diameter of which is in the 50–10,000 nm range was reduced to 20% for NP50 and NP100, while it was about 30% for NP0 and NP30, attributed to the water released by RA. Compressive strength loss for SCC50 and SCC100 concretes are both influenced by porosity of RA, and by the NP porosity. The article presents results obtained during testing of concrete based on CEM I 42.5R Portland cement, fine and coarse aggregate, glass, volatile ash, and superplastifier. The concrete mixture was modified using filler consisting of bromosilicate heat resistant cullet. Recycled aggregate was added to the batch. Samples for the need of testing were produced as (100 × 100 × 100) mm cubes. Before commencing proper tests, samples have been heated within the temperature range of 20–800 °C. Tests carried out during the proper testing procedure included tests of compressive strength, elevated temperature, impact strength, as well as macroscopic tests of the contact area. The obtained test results have provided proof of there being a possibility of producing special concrete, modified by products obtained from heat resistant cullet. This type of is generally characterized by satisfactory performance parameters. The average compressive strength for concrete modified by a 10% of heat resistant cullet was determined as 43.6 MPa and 48.3 MPa respectively after 28 and 180 days of curing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To explore the feasibility of utilizing recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) in revetment construction of the lower Yellow River, a series of mix proportions with local recycled aggregates (RA) were designed to evaluate its mechanical properties and durability. The morphology and micro-hardness of the interface transition zone (ITZ) were also characterized to explain the performance of RAC. Based on the compressive strength data of 13 groups of mixtures, which is larger than 30 MPa, and with the RA substitution rate not less than 50%, the RAC containing 50% recycled fine aggregate (RFA) (HDX50), 70% RFA (HDX70), and 50% recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) (HDC50) were selected. The experiment results suggest that the mechanical performance, frost resistance, and carbonation resistance of the selected RAC is generally poorer than that of natural aggregate concrete (NAC), but can meet the performance requirement of concrete for the revetment construction of the lower Yellow River. The comprehensive performance of these three mixtures ranks as: HDX50 > HDX70 > HDC50. When considering the RA substitution ratio as a priority, HDX70 would be the best choice and can be applied in the revetment engineering. A number of defects are observed on the surface of RA with old pastes attached. Furthermore, the ITZs formed around RA are loose and with low micro-hardness, which is deemed to be the dominating reasons leading to the weaker performance of RAC than that of NAC. The growth of global construction has contributed to an inevitable increase in the amount of construction and demolition (C&D) waste, and the recycling of C&D waste as aggregates in concrete is receiving increased interest, resulting in less demand for normal aggregates and bringing a potential solution for the landfilling of wastes. Recently, several studies have focused on the use of C&D waste in alkali-activated concrete to move one step closer to sustainable concretes. This paper focuses on the main mechanisms of using C&D waste in the resulting physical, mechanical, and durability properties of alkali-activated concrete in fresh and hardened state properties. The main difficulties observed with recycled aggregates (RA) in concrete, such as high levels of water demand, porous structure, and low mechanical strength, occur in RA alkali-activated concretes. These are associated with the highly porous nature and defects of RA. However, the high calcium concentration of RA affects the binder gel products, accelerates the hardening rate of the concrete, and reduces the flowability of alkali-activated concretes. For this reason, several techniques have been investigated for modifying the water content and workability of the fresh matrix and for treating RA and RA/alkali-activated binder interactions to produce more sustainable alkali-activated concretes. Currently it is necessary to find alternatives towards a sustainable construction, in order to optimize the management of natural resources. Thus, using recycled fine aggregate (RFA) is a viable recycling option for the production of new cementitious materials. In addition, the use of polymeric microfibers would cause an increase in the properties of these materials. In this work, mortars were studied with 25% of RFA and an addition of polyacrylonitrile PAN microfibers of 0.05% in cement weight. The microfibers were obtained by the electrospinning method, which had an average diameter of 1.024 µm and were separated by means of a homogenizer to be added to the mortar. Cementing materials under study were evaluated for compressive strength, flexural strength, total porosity, effective porosity and capillary absorption, resistance to water penetration, sorptivity and carbonation. The results showed that using 25% of RFA causes decreases mechanical properties and durability, but adding PAN microfibers in 0.05% caused an increase of 2.9% and 30.8% of compressive strength and flexural strength respectively (with respect to the reference sample); a decrease in total porosity of 5.8% and effective porosity of 7.4%; and significant decreases in capillary absorption (approximately 23.3%), resistance to water penetration (25%) and carbonation (14.3% after 28 days of exposure). The results showed that the use of PAN microfibers in recycled mortars allowed it to increase the mechanical properties (because they increase the tensile strength), helped to fill pores or cavities and this causes them to be mortars with greater durability. Recycled aggregates have high water absorption and crushing index. In order to improve the properties of recycled aggregates in concrete production, various treatments were used to modify the aggregates. In recent years, bio-deposition as a new treatment method of recycled aggregates was environmentally friendly. An improved method of bio-deposition was implemented to modify the properties of recycled mortar aggregates (RMA). O-bio-deposition is based on aerobic bacteria induced CaCO3 precipitation by respiration by varying the distance between the RMA and the bottom of the container and by adding an oxygen release compound to the culture solution that contains bacteria to promote the induction of CaCO3. First, the physical properties, including water absorption, crushing value, and apparent density, of the coarse RMA under different treatment methods were determined, and an o-bio-deposition treatment method was obtained. The fine RMA was treated and compared with the untreated RMA. Concretes were then prepared from the treated coarse RMA, and compressive strength and slump were determined. In addition, the effect of the o-bio-deposition treatment on the RMA surface and the micro-cracks of concretes were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that the water absorption and crushing index of the coarse RMA treated by o-bio-deposition were reduced by 40.38 and 19.76% compared with untreated RMA, respectively. Regarding the concrete, the slump and the compressive strength (28 d) of concrete were increased by 115% and 25.3%, respectively compared with the untreated concrete. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the properties of steam cured recycled aggregate concrete (RAC), in an attempt to determine the optimum conditions of the steam-curing cycle for RAC, and incorporating high early strength cement (HESC). Varying conditions of steam curing were employed. The steam-curing cycle was set based on the peak temperature, and the duration for which the peak temperature was maintained. Three peak temperatures were used for steam curing, 50 °C, 60 °C, and 70 °C, maintained for up to two hours. The compressive strength results indicated that the steam-curing cycle employing the peak temperature of 50 °C maintained for one hour with a total duration of four hours was the optimum for strength development, both at the early and late stages of hydration. Determining the optimum steam-curing temperature and duration will help reduce the associated curing cost, thus further economizing the production cost of recycled aggregate concrete.
