This paper presents the results of research on polyurethane viscoelastic foams (PUVFs) modified with biomaterials. This investigation looked at the effect of the biomaterials on the foaming processes, as well as the acoustical and selected physical-mechanical properties of the foams. Various types of rapeseed oil biopolyols and microcellulose were used to modify the materials. The analysis of properties covered a reference biopolyol-free sample and materials containing 10 wt.%, 20 wt.%, and 30 wt.% of different types of biopolyols in the mixture of polyol components. The biopolyols differed in terms of functionality and hydroxyl value (OHv). Next, a selected formulation was modified with various microcellulose biofillers in the amount of 0.5–2 wt.%. The PUVFs, with apparent densities of more than 210 kg/m3 and open-cell structures (more than 85% of open cells), showed a slow recovery to their original shape after deformation when the pressure force was removed. They were also characterized by a tensile strength in the range of 156–264 kPa, elongation at break of 310–510%, hardness of 8.1–23.1 kPa, and a high comfort factor of 3.1–7.1. The introduction of biopolyols into the polyurethane system resulted in changes in sound intensity levels of up to 31.45%, while the addition of fillers resulted in changes in sound intensity levels of up to 13.81%. In this paper, we study the influence of densified microsilica and colloidal nanosilica admixtures on the mechanical strength and the microstructural characteristics of special mortars used for immobilizing radioactive concrete waste. The experimental program focused on the replacement of cement with micro- and/or nanosilica, in different proportions, in the basic composition of a mortar made with recycled aggregates. The technical criteria imposed for such cementitious systems, used for the encapsulation of low-level radioactive waste, imply high fluidity, increased mechanical strength and lack of segregation and of bleeding. We aimed to increase the structural compactness of the mortars by adding micro- and nanosilica, all the while maintaining the technical criteria imposed, to obtain a cement matrix with high durability and increased capacity for immobilizing radionuclides. The samples from all the compositions obtained were analyzed from the point of view of mechanical strength. Also, micro- and nanosilica as well as samples of the optimal mortar compositions were analyzed physically and microstructurally. Experimental data showed that the mortar samples present maximum compressive strength for a content between 6 and 7.5% wt. of microsilica, respectively, for a content of 2.25% wt. nanosilica. The obtained results suggest a synergistic effect of micro- and nanosilica when they are used simultaneously in cementitious compositions. Thus, among the analyzed compositional variants, the mortar composition with 3% wt. microsilica and 2.25% wt. nanosilica showed the best performance, with an increase in compressive strength of 23.5% compared to the control sample (without micro- and nanosilica). Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images highlighted the decrease in pore diameter and the increase in structural compactness, especially for mortar samples with nanosilica content or a mixture of micro- and nanosilica. Roller-compacted concrete (RCC) for pavements has experienced problems with its physical-mechanical performance over extended periods due to ambient and in situ curing conditions. Accordingly, this study aimed to present multiple regression equations for calculating the physical-mechanical properties of RCC for pavements under different service and mix conditions. For this purpose, the research included two cement and two water contents, one reduced with admixture, and four combinations of temperature and relative humidity. For model calibration and definition of the equations, cubic and beam samples were fabricated to carry out physical-mechanical tests, such as moisture content, shrinkage, and modulus of rupture. Laboratory-obtained data were studied with the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to determine the best regression equations. The main findings determined that the behavior of a mixture of RCC at a prolonged ambient exposure time is possible because the surface models and the RSM were consistent with the different service and mix conditions. The models showed an accuracy of 98.99% in detecting shrinkage changes from 12 to 16% cement with 5.65% water in dry to wet ambient conditions. Similarly, moisture content and modulus of rupture had a 98.27 to 98.88% fit. Finally, the drying shrinkage, with mixes of 12% cement and water content variations with water-reducing admixture and superplasticizer effects, had an adjustment of 94.87%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research focuses on the behavior of roller-compacted concrete (RCC) used in pavements, which are prone to deterioration affecting their performance. These deteriorations result from various causes, including traffic load, errors during construction, mix design, and ambient conditions. Among these, ambient conditions could lead to a marked variable impact on material behavior and durability depending on the conditions associated with each region. Accordingly, this study aims to deepen the understanding of the effect, which a broader range of ambient conditions and different mix designs have on the physical and mechanical properties of RCC. Measurements such as the amount of water vapor per kilogram of air were used to apply the findings comprehensively. The RCC analysis encompassed experimentation with different compositions, altering the cement water ratio amount, and adding a superplasticizer. The impact of curing on the materials was evaluated before subjecting them to various humidity and temperature conditions. Laboratory tests were conducted to measure performance, including moisture, shrinkage, compressive strength, and the progression of flexural fracture resistance over curing periods of up to 90 days. The results revealed a logarithmic correlation between shrinkage and ambient humidity, which is the most determining factor in performance. Mix optimization through increased cement and reduced water enhanced the tensile strength of the material. Furthermore, the curing process was confirmed to increase resistance to shrinkage, especially in the long term, establishing it as a crucial element for the structural stability of RCC, which is relatively insensitive to variations in ambient conditions. The work deals with the application of biopolymer fillers in rubber formulations. Calcium lignosulfonate was incorporated into styrene–butadiene rubber and acrylonitrile–butadiene rubber in a constant amount of 30 phr. Glycerol in a concentration scale ranging from 5 to 20 phr was used as a plasticizer for rubber formulations. For the cross-linking of the compounds, a sulfur-based curing system was used. The study was focused on the investigation of glycerol in the curing process; the viscosity of rubber compounds; and the cross-link density, morphology, physical–mechanical, and dynamic mechanical properties of vulcanizates. The study revealed that the application of glycerol as a plasticizer resulted in a reduction in the rubber compounds' viscosity and contributed to the better dispersion and distribution of the filler within the rubber matrices. The mutual adhesion and compatibility between the filler and the rubber matrices were improved, which resulted in the significant enhancement of tensile characteristics. The main output of the work is the knowledge that the improvement of the physical–mechanical properties of biopolymer-filled vulcanizates can be easily obtained via the simple addition of a very cheap and environmentally friendly plasticizer into rubber compounds during their processing without additional treatments or procedures. The enhancement of the physical–mechanical properties of rubber compounds filled with biopolymers might contribute to the broadening of their potential applications. The properties of asphalt mixtures and the quality of their execution are key factors for their service life and durability in the pavement structure. This research aims to study the effect of deicing chemicals (sodium chloride, NaCl) on asphalt mixtures in laboratory conditions to know the changes in properties when the samples were loaded with a different number of freeze–thaw cycles. The behavior of the standardly used asphalt mixtures and bitumen binders was verified by the exposure to sodium chloride solution (20 g/L NaCl). In the first part of the experiment, penetration, elastic recovery, and softening point tests were performed for paving grade bitumen 50/70 and 70/100, and polymer-modified bitumen PMB 25/55-60. Furthermore, asphalt concrete (AC 11) mixtures with different air voids were subjected to 25, 50, and 75 freeze–thaw cycles to determine the effect on the service life of the pavement structure. Following the Czech standard, CSN 73 6161, and the TP 170 regulation for the design of asphalt pavements, the Marshall test and the stiffness modulus were determined for all asphalt samples. In this work, to better understand the bonding process of plastic plywood panels, the effects of recycled low-density polyethylene (rLDPE) film of three thicknesses (50, 100, and 150 µm) and veneers of four various wood species (beech, birch, hornbeam, and poplar) on the properties of panels were studied. The obtained properties were also compared with the properties of plywood panels bonded by virgin low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film. The results showed that properties of plywood samples bonded with rLDPE and virgin LDPE films differ insignificantly. Samples bonded with rLDPE film demonstrated satisfactory physical and mechanical properties. It was also established that the best mechanical properties of plywood are provided by beech veneer and the lowest by poplar veneer. However, poplar plywood had the best water absorption and swelling thickness, and the bonding strength at the level of birch and hornbeam plywood. The properties of rLDPE-bonded plywood improved with increasing the thickness of the film. The panels bonded with rLDPE film had a close-to-zero formaldehyde content (0.01–0.10 mg/m2·h) and reached the super E0 emission class that allows for defining the laboratory-manufactured plastic-bonded plywood as an eco-friendly composite. This study addresses the application of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers to improve the performance of lightweight cement composites with pozzolans. Blended cement mixes based on expanded glass granules were modified with PVA fibers (Type A: Ø40 µm, L = 8 mm and Type B: Ø200 µm, L = 12 mm). The following research methods were used to analyse the effect of the fibers on the structure of cement matrix and physical-mechanical properties of lightweight composite: SEM, XRD, DTG, calorimetry tests, and standard test methods of physical and mechanical properties. Results from the tests showed that a denser layer of hydrates was formed around the PVA fiber and the amounts of portlandite, CSH, and CASH formed in the specimens with PVA were found to be higher. PVA fibers of Type A accelerated hydration of the cement paste, slightly increased the compressive strength of the lightweight composite, but had no significant effect on the values of density, ultrasonic pulse velocity and flexural strength. The shrinkage of cement composite was significantly reduced using both types of PVA fiber and both types of PVA fibers increased the fracture energy of lightweight cement composite with expanded granules. The paper presents the basic problem related with practical application of carbonate rocks in construction: are carbonate aggregates produced from such rocks favorable for building engineering, particularly for road design and construction? To resolve this problem, (1) the geological-engineering properties of aggregates are presented, (2) the correlation between petrographic and engineering parameters is shown, and (3) a strict correlation between the geological-engineering properties and the freezing-thawing and crushing resistance is recognized. This knowledge has allowed to assess the usefulness of asphalt concrete (AC) made from dolomite and limestone aggregates in the design and construction of road surface structures. The petrography was characterized using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscope (EDS). Engineering properties were determined in accordance with European and Polish norms and guidelines. Statistical and design calculations were performed using dedicated software. The petrographic properties, and selected physical and mechanical parameters of the aggregates, were tested to show their influence on the freezing–thawing and crushing resistance. Strong functional relationships between the water adsorption, and the freezing–thawing and crushing resistance have been observed. Aggregate strength decreased after saturation with increasing concentrations of salt solutions. Calculations of AC fatigue durability and deformation allow for reducing the thickness of the road surface structure by about 20% in comparison to normative solutions. This conclusion has impact on the economy of road design and construction, and allows for a rational utilization of rock resources, which contributes to sustainable development of the construction industry. Adverse side-effects occurred in slurry foaming and thickening process when carbide slag was substituted for quicklime in HCS-AAC. Cement accelerators were introduced to modify the slurry foaming and coagulating process during pre-curing. Meanwhile, the affiliated effects on the physical-mechanical properties and hydration products were discussed to evaluate the applicability and influence of the cement accelerator. The hydration products were characterized by mineralogical (XRD) and thermal analysis (DSC-TG). The results indicated that substituting carbide slag for quicklime retarded slurry foaming and curing progress; meanwhile, the induced mechanical property declination had a negative effect on the generation of C–S–H (I) and tobermorite. Na2SO4 and Na2O·2.0SiO2 can effectively accelerate the slurry foaming rate, but the promoting effect on slurry thickening was inconspicuous. The compressive strength of HCS-AAC obviously declined with increasing cement coagulant content, which was mainly ascribed to the decrease in bulk density caused by the accelerating effect on the slurry foaming process. Dosing Na2SO4 under 0.4% has little effect on the generation of strength contributing to hydration products while the addition of Na2O·2.0SiO2 can accelerate the generation and crystallization of C–S–H, which contributed to the high activity gelatinous SiO2 generated from the reaction between Na2O·2.0SiO2 and Ca(OH)2. In this study, tung tree and linseed drying oils, as well as semi-drying hempseed oil, were analyzed as the protective coatings for biocomposite boards (BcB) made of hemp shives, corn starch binder, and the performance-enhancing additives. The hydrophobization coatings were formed at 40, 90, and 120 °C temperatures, respectively. The physical-mechanical properties such as the compressive strength, thermal conductivity, dimensional stability, water absorption, and swelling were tested. In addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed for the analysis of the board microstructure to visualize the oil fills and impregnation in pores and voids. It was demonstrated that the compressive strength of oil-modified BcBs compared to uncoated BcBs (at 10% of relative deformation) increased by up to 4.5-fold and could reach up to 14 MPa, water absorption decreased up to 4-fold (from 1.34 to 0.37 kg/m2), swelling decreased up to 48% (from 8.20% to 4.26%), whereas the thermal conductivity remained unchanged with the thermal conductivity coefficient of around 0.085 W/m·K.
