The present study reports on the preparation of a cellulose fiber (CF) composite from D. lutescens, combined with copper oxide nanoparticles (DL@CF/CuO), to prolong the shelf life of tomatoes after harvest. The isolated cellulose fiber material was comprehensively characterized using XRD, FTIR, and FE-SEM analyses. The DLCF and DL@CF/CuO nanoparticles exhibited crystalline cellulose, as indicated by the XRD investigation. Both DLCF and DL@CF/CuO showed O-H and C-H FTIR spectra with identifiable vibrational peaks. The FE-SEM images depicted the dispersion of DL@CF/CuO-based fibers in a cellulose fiber matrix containing CuO nanoparticles. A 0.3% (wt/wt), a solution of DL@CF/CuO was coated onto the surface of early ripening tomato fruits. After a 25-day storage period at 25–29 °C and 85% RH, the results showed a significant extension in the shelf life of the tomato fruits, in line with changes in physiological properties and fruit quality. The extension of shelf life in tomato fruit epidermis treated with DL@CF/CuO was confirmed through FE-SEM analysis. L929 fibroblast cells were treated with the developed DL@CF/CuO nanocomposite, and no signs of toxicity were detected up to 75 µg/mL. Additionally, the DL@CF/CuO nanocomposite exhibited significant antifungal activity against Aspergillus flavus. The unique semiconductor and optical properties of copper oxides have attracted researchers for decades. However, using fruit waste materials such as peels to synthesize the nanoparticles of copper oxide (CuO NPs) has been rarely described in literature reviews. The main purpose of this part of the research was to report on the CuO NPs with the help of apple peel extract under microwave irradiation. Metal salts and extracts were irradiated at 540 W for 5 min in a microwave in a 1:2 ratio. The crystallinity of the NPs was confirmed by the XRD patterns and the crystallite size of the NPs was found to be 41.6 nm. Elemental mapping of NPs showed homogeneous distributions of Cu and O. The NPs were found to contain Cu and O by EDX and XPS analysis. In a test involving two human pathogenic microbes, NPs showed antibacterial activity and the results revealed that the zone of inhibition grew significantly with respect to the concentration of CuO NPs. In a biofilm, more specifically, NPs at 25.0 µg/mL reduced mean thickness and biomass values of S. aureus and E. coli biofilms by >85.0 and 65.0%, respectively, with respect to untreated controls. Medical face masks help to reduce the transmission of pathogens, however, the number of infections caused by antimicrobial-resistant pathogens continues to increase. The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial effect of an experimental medical mask layer coated with copper oxide using an environmentally friendly non-thermal physical vapour deposition approach. Pure CuO nanoparticles were successfully deposited on the middle layer of a face mask. The particles were distributed in different size clusters (starting from less than 100 nm dots going up to about 1 µm cluster-like structures). The CuO clusters did not form uniform films, which could negatively influence airflow during use of the mask. We investigated the antimicrobial properties of the experimental mask layer coated with CuO NPs using 17 clinical and zoonotic strains of gram-negative, gram-positive, spore-forming bacteria and yeasts, during direct and indirect contact with the mask surface. The effectiveness of the coated mask layer depended on the deposition duration of CuO. The optimal time for deposition was 30 min, which ensured a bactericidal effect for both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including antimicrobial-resistant strains, using 150 W power. High-purity TiO2 and CuO powders were synthesized by the Pechini method, an inexpensive and easy-to-implement procedure to synthetize metal oxides. The variables of synthesis were the ethylene glycol:citric acid molar ratio and the pH. High reproducibility of the anatase and tenorite phase was obtained for all synthesis routes. The degree of purity of the powders was confirmed by XRD, FTIR, UV-Vis absorption and XPS spectra. SEM and TEM images revealed the powders are composed of micrometer grains that can have a spherical shape (only in the TiO2) or formed by a non-compacted nanocrystalline conglomerate. FTIR spectra only displayed vibrational modes associating TiO2 and CuO with nanoparticle behavior. UV-Vis absorption spectra revealed the values of maximum absorbance percentage of both systems are reached in the ultraviolet region, with percentages above 83% throughout the entire visible light spectrum for the CuO system, a relevant result for solar cell applications. The copper oxide (CuO) nanowires/functionalized graphene (f-graphene) compositematerial was successfully composed by a one-pot synthesis method. The f-graphene synthesized through the Birch reduction chemistry method was modified with functional group "-(CH2)5COOH", and the CuO nanowires (NWs) were well dispersed in the f-graphene sheets. When used as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries, the composite exhibited good cyclic stability and decent specific capacity of 677mA.h.g-1 after 50 cycles. CuO NWs can enhance the lithium-ion storage of the composites while the f-graphene effectively resists the volume expansion of the CuO NWs during the galvanostatic charge/discharge cyclic process, and provide a conductive paths for charge transportation. Recent nanotechnological advances suggest that metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have been expected to be used in various fields, ranging from catalysis and opto-electronic materials to sensors, environmental remediation, and biomedicine. However, the growing use of NPs has led to their release into environment and the toxicity of metal oxide NPs on organisms has become a concern to both the public and scientists. Unfortunately, there are still widespread controversies and ambiguities with respect to the toxic effects and mechanisms of metal oxide NPs. Comprehensive understanding of their toxic effect is necessary to safely expand their use. In this review, we use CuO and ZnO NPs as examples to discuss how key factors such as size, surface characteristics, dissolution, and exposure routes mediate toxic effects, and we describe corresponding mechanisms, including oxidative stress, coordination effects and non-homeostasis effects. This work reports on H2 fuel generation from sewage water using Cu/CuO nanoporous (NP) electrodes. This is a novel concept for converting contaminated water into H2 fuel. The preparation of Cu/CuO NP was achieved using a simple thermal combustion process of Cu metallic foil at 550 °C for 1 h. The Cu/CuO surface consists of island-like structures, with an inter-distance of 100 nm. Each island has a highly porous surface with a pore diameter of about 250 nm. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the formation of monoclinic Cu/CuO NP material with a crystallite size of 89 nm. The prepared Cu/CuO photoelectrode was applied for H2 generation from sewage water achieving an incident to photon conversion efficiency (IPCE) of 14.6%. Further, the effects of light intensity and wavelength on the photoelectrode performance were assessed. The current density (Jph) value increased from 2.17 to 4.7 mA·cm−2 upon raising the light power density from 50 to 100 mW·cm−2. Moreover, the enthalpy (ΔH*) and entropy (ΔS*) values of Cu/CuO electrode were determined as 9.519 KJ mol−1 and 180.4 JK−1·mol−1, respectively. A CuO/bentonite composite photocatalyst was prepared to fully utilize the adsorption capacity of bentonite and the photocatalytic activity of CuO. CuO and bentonite were chosen as a photocatalyst due to the excellent optical property of CuO and large specific surface area of bentonite, together with their high stability and low production cost. The sample was characterized by XRD, SEM, and BET. The effects of several factors on degradation process were investigated such as dosage of H2O2, irradiation time, pH of the solution, and dosage of catalyst. The optimum conditions for decolorization of methylene blue solution by CuO/bentonite were determined. Under optimal conditions, the decolorization efficiency of methylene blue by a 1.4% CuO/bentonite (400 °C) composite photocatalyst under visible irradiation at 240 min reached 96.98%. The degradation process follow edpseudo-second-order kinetics. The photocatalytic mechanism is discussed in detail. Copper nitride nanowire arrays were synthesized by an ammonolysis reaction of copper oxide precursors grown on copper surfaces in an ammonia solution. The starting Cu films were deposited on a silicon substrate using two different methods: thermal evaporation (30 nm thickness) and electroplating (2 μm thickness). The grown CuO or CuO/Cu(OH)2 architectures were studied in regard to morphology and size, using electron microscopy methods (SEM, TEM). The final shape and composition of the structures were mostly affected by the concentration of the ammonia solution and time of the immersion. Needle-shaped 2–3 μm long nanostructures were formed from the electrodeposited copper films placed in a 0.033 M NH3 solution for 48 h, whereas for the copper films obtained by physical vapor deposition (PVD), well-aligned nano-needles were obtained after 3 h. The phase composition of the films was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) analysis, indicating a presence of CuO and Cu(OH)2, as well as Cu residues. Therefore, in order to obtain a pure oxide film, the samples were thermally treated at 120–180 °C, after which the morphology of the structures remained unchanged. In the final stage of this study, Cu3N nanostructures were obtained by an ammonolysis reaction at 310 °C and studied by SEM, TEM, XRD, and spectroscopic methods. This paper presents results from the production of copper oxide layers on a Cu sheet substrate using diode and Yb:YAG disc lasers operating in the wavelength ranges of 808–940 nm and 1030 nm. The parameters of these layers were compared with the layer obtained in the thermal process of copper oxidation at 300 °C in an infrared (IR) furnace in a natural atmosphere. Investigations into the layers mentioned above, concerning their topography, chemical composition and roughness, were made using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). A hot-point probe was used to determine and check the type of conductivity of the copper oxide layers formed. The optical band gap energy was estimated by applying the Kubelka–Munk method based on spectrophotometric data. Cross-sections and the element distribution maps were made using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The phase analysis was investigated by the X-ray diffraction method (XRD). In sum, controlled laser oxidations of copper sheets allow for the formation of a mixture of Cu2O and CuO phases. The diode laser allows the production of a layer of copper oxides with a phase composition comparable to the oxides produced by the thermal oxidation method, while the distribution of high phase uniformity in the cross-section of the layer enables the process using a Yb:YAG disc laser. FeCr matrix high-temperature self-lubricating composites reinforced by Mo, Ag, and CuO were fabricated by the powder metallurgy technique. The tribological behaviors of composites were studied at temperatures up to 800 °C. The CuO content was optimized according to the tribological results. Mo showed an obvious lubricating effect when it converted into MoO3. The bimetallic oxide system formed high-temperature solid lubricants with low shear strength. CuO reacted with MoO3 and formed CuMoO4 and Cu3Mo2O9. The composites showed an increase in the friction coefficient with the increase of CuO. However, the wear rates decreased with the increase of CuO. The critical threshold at which there was a transition of friction coefficients and wear rates from room temperature (RT) to 800 °C was 10 wt.% CuO. The Fe(Cr)-14% Mo-10.5% Ag-10% CuO composite showed the most reasonable high-temperature tribological behaviors. This was ascribed to the synergistic effects of silver, Mo, in situ formed solid lubricants (metal oxides and salt compounds), and the stable oxide film on the worn surfaces. In our theoretical study, the enhanced solubility of CuO nanoparticles in water saturated by air is predicted based on a simple thermodynamic model. CuO is considered in the form of nanoparticles with various shapes. The interfacial energy of a solid CuO/dilute aqueous solution interface was assessed by applying the average CuO surface energy and contact angle of a sessile drop of water. The equilibrium CuO solubility was calculated using Gibbs energy minimization technique. For the smallest spherical nanoparticles considered in this work (r = 2 nm), the solubility is significantly higher than the solubility of bulk material. In the case of cylindrical nanoparticles, the solubility increase is even more considerable. The CuO spherical nanoparticles solubility was also calculated using the Ostwald–Freundlich equation which is known to overestimate the solubility as discussed in this contribution. We present a simple method of fabricating a hierarchically nanostructured CuO–Cu current collector by using laser ablation and metal mold imprinting to maximize the surface area. The laser ablation of the Cu current collector created the CuO nanostructure on the Cu-collector surface. The microstructure was transferred by subsequent imprinting of the microstructure metal mold on the Cu collector. Then, the laser-ablation nanostructure was formed. Consequently, a hierarchical structure is generated. The laser-ablated hierarchical CuO–Cu current collector exhibited an improved capacity while maintaining a cyclability that is similar to those of conventional graphite batteries.
